NEW TOOL FOR TURNING TITANIUM

CAN BE MONITORED WITH SENSORS

A new insert geometry for grooving and

parting off titanium has been introduced by

German tool manufacturer, Horn. It ensures

reliable chip breaking and a soft cut, leading

to high feed rates and fast machining times.

Additionally, tool longevity is increased by

up to 60 per cent. Type 224 inserts with the

new WT geometry are available in

increments of 2, 2.5 and 3 mm in carbide

grade IG35 and are designed for Horn's H224

tool holders.

Coupled with this development, the Swiss

group Kistler, working closely with Paul

Horn GmbH, has developed a novel system

Tooling expert Walter GB has announced a

range of two new solid carbide taps and a

thread milling cutter targeted specifically at

producing threads in hardened steel.

TC388 Supreme and TC389 Supreme solid

carbide taps are for 50–58 HRC and 55–65

HRC materials, respectively, while the TC685

Supreme thread mill is for workpieces up to

44 HRC hardness levels.

The TC388 and TC389 Supreme taps have

special cutting geometries that fully shear off

the root of the chip when reversing,

minimising torque peaks that are common

with blind hole machining; for example,

when the reversing of the tap can result in

fractures.

In addition, the new geometries also

prolong the tool life and increase process

reliability, and the need for oil lubrication

for real-time monitoring of tools used in

micro turning applications. The Piezo Tool

System (PTS) consists of a force sensor

inserted into the turning tool holder that

provides information on the condition of the

tool during cutting.

The small piezoelectric sensor, which can

be replaced easily and quickly, can measure

even the tiniest of cutting forces to a high

resolution. A machine operator is

immediately able to identify a defect in the

material being cut or a tool breakage,

resulting in minimum scrap, maximum

quality, lower production costs and

increased productivity.

In micro turning applications, alternative

measuring systems are not practical.

Monitoring the drive power of the spindle

motor is not able to detect the minute

variations. Measuring acoustic emissions

does not deliver satisfactory results

consistently when small workpieces are

being machined. Visual monitoring also has

to be ruled out, as coolant together with the

high rotational speeds would obscure the

view of the machining process.

The new PTS solution is compatible with

selected standard turning tool holders from

Horn, does not require any adjustment to be

made at the control and can be used on any

lathe.

WALTER TAPS INTO SOLID CARBIDE FOR

SUPERB THREADING OF HARDENED STEELS

has been replaced by the use of emulsion.

Generating maximum process reliability

and long tool life, the TC685 Supreme orbital

drill thread mill produces the core hole and

thread (and chamfer, if required) in a single

operation.

Its face milling geometry produces

stabilising forces in the axial direction to

improve stability and reduce deflection –

with the result of fewer radius corrections

and reduced wear. In addition, its 15° helix

angle and internal coolant guarantee chip

evacuation.

SHAKING UP

THE MARKET!

New range of MACH Machine Tools’ CNC

bed mills equipped with the sophisticated

DynaPath WinDelta control is guaranteed to

cause a stir.

MACH Machine Tools, part of the

Vigilance Group, has recently introduced a

new range of CNC bed mills equipped with

the advanced DynaPath control.

There are three machines in the range -

the MDM 700 (X-, Y- and Z-axes = 710mm,

400mm and 500mm) the MDM 850 (X-, Y-

and Z-axes = 830mm, 500mm and 610mm),

and the MDM 1000 (X-, Y-and Z-axes =

1000mm, 500mm and 610mm).

In addition to the machines’ powerful ISO

40 taper spindles (up to 5000rpm spindle

speed) and generous working tables (up to

1524mm (L) x 330mm (W) with a maximum

load of 500kg), all three models are equipped

with a range of value added features

supplied as standard.

These include a 12.1” touch screen, MPG

hand wheel, air draw bar, interlock table

guard and coolant equipment. They are also

Wi-Fi enabled to facilitate ‘remote’ diagnostic

and online support.

The MDM range of machines deliver

exceptional cutting performance and are

equipped with the DynaPath WinDelta

control system which gives the machines a

definite ‘edge’ when it comes to speed,

flexibility and reliability.

The DynaPath control system is

inherently versatile and features

conversational and ISO/G code

programming capability making them easy

to program on the shop floor.

An 8Gb on-board (program) storage

facility combined with 1000 line look ahead

ensures fast processing speeds and

responsiveness which, in turn, help deliver

high part accuracies and superior surface

finishes.
