Warm welcome for<br />
royals at marae<br />

There was anticipation at Tuahiwi as<br />
local whanau prepared for last Friday’s<br />
visit of PrinceCharles and his wife,<br />
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.<br />
Kaumatua, invitedguestsand local,<br />
national and internationalmedia<br />
gathered at Tuahiwi MaraeonFriday<br />
morning to await their arrival.<br />
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordonwas<br />
among invited guests.<br />
‘‘It’sareal honourtohave theminour<br />
district,’’ Mr Gordonsaid.<br />
The couple were welcomedonthe<br />
maraewith apowhiri by Ngai<br />
Tuahuriri.<br />
Ngai Tuahuririupoko (leader) Te<br />
Maire Tau said it was an honour to<br />
welcome them on to the marae, after his<br />
late fatherRakiihia (Rik) Tau<br />
welcomed theminChristchurch during<br />
theirlast visit in 2012.<br />
Members of the Muslim community<br />
wereinvited to the powhiri and to meet<br />
Charles and Camilla.<br />

saiditwas an honour to be invited.<br />
‘‘All of us had an opportunity to speak<br />
to the Prince.<br />
‘‘Hewas very warm and it was very<br />
specialtospeak to him, although it was<br />

Members of the TuahiwiPrimary<br />
School, Kaiapoi HighSchool and<br />
Rangiora High School kapa haka<br />
groups joined forces to perform for the<br />
couple duringthe powhiri.<br />
Afterwards, local kaumatua hosted a<br />
short hightea for the Royal party,<br />
before they returned to Christchurch.<br />
Oncethe Royal party had departed,<br />
local whanauand guestscelebrated<br />
withahangi.<br />
The couplehave now left New<br />
Zealand.<br />
