Spring lamb field day

Getting the mostout of spring lambs will
be the focus of afield day at Hawarden
next week.
Beef and Lamb New Zealand willbe
hosting afieldday at Double Tops, the
Hawardenproperty of Dugald, Mandy
and AndrewRutherford next
Wednesday from 1.30pm,focusedon
spring lambs, facilitator Dr Tom Fraser
said.
‘‘With the current and projected lamb
prices lookingextremelypromising, any
managementpractices that can be
incorporated into the farm system to
increase the slaughter weight of lambs
available for sale adds significantly to
the farm profit.
‘‘With weaningapproaching and
pasture qualitydeclining,anything that
can be done to improvestockhealth
over this period is extremely
important.’’
NorthCanterbury VeterinaryClinics
vet Ben Allott will be on handtodiscus
options for minimising the effects of
internalparasiteresistance, Dr Fraser
says.
‘‘Thedevelopment of drench
resistance continues at an alarming
pace,with tripleresistant parasitesin
the North Island being diagnosedwith
alarmingfrequency. South Island
properties are unfortunately also
following this trend.
‘‘It is clear thatmany farms continue
to take massive risks with poor
quarantine programmesand many
farmers don’tknow what drenches are
effective or ineffective on their
properties.’’
Dr Frasersays Ben will presentthe
results of anumber of faecalegg count
reduction tests fromlast year in North
Canterbury.
He says localfarmers will speak about
the challenges of drench resistance, the
attemptsatslowing the development of
further issues, and the consequences of
interventions on theirbusiness and
productivity.
‘‘These farmer forums have been a
highlight of pastfield days and this will
be agreat opportunity to discuss with
otherfarmers the management systems
they have in place to achieve high
production.
‘‘They will discusstheirexperiences
relating to drenchtesting,providing
refugia andreducing reliance on longacting
treatments.’’
Therewill also be afarm tour,with an
opportunity to discuss some pasture
options to mitigate against the effects of
internal parasites and drench
resistance.
Dr Fraserwill presentinformation
from previous trial workonweaned
lamb growthrates on variousforage
types, when the lambs weredrenched
with effectivedrenches comparedto
lambsonthe sameforagesthat were
infected withhigh numbersofparasite
larvae.

Rural Trust appreciation days
Farmer appreciation days are coming to
Farm Source stores in Canterbury.
The North Canterbury Rural Support
Trust is offering three farmer
appreciation days next week in
partnership with Farm Source.
The events are for the rural
community and for anyone who works in
the primary sector.

staff, neighbours and the guy at the end
of the road,’’ North Canterbury Rural
Support Trust co­ordinator Claire Ford
says.
Lunch is being provided by Fush
restaurant from Christchurch, but is
limited to 100 meals per event, so
booking is essential.
Half­hour consultations will also be
available with dietitian and nutritionist
Liz Ford, but book now.
Attendees will also go into the draw
for two nights’ accommodation for two
in Hanmer Springs, with atwin pass to
the thermal pools.
