TOP OF THE WORLD
by Alex Trelinski
RAFAEL Nadal clinched an emotional
Davis Cup victory for Spain over Canada
when he beat Denis Shapovalov in front
of a jubilant home crowd in Madrid.
His 6-3 7-6 (9-7) win sealed the title on
Sunday, with Roberto Bautista Agut returning
to the team three days after his father’s
death to put the hosts 1-0 up.
Bautista Agut was in tears after beating
19-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (7-3)
6-3 in the opener.
Nadal’s win gave Spain an unassailable
2-0 lead and a sixth Davis Cup title.
The world number one won all eight of his
rubbers over the tournament to help Spain to
a first title since 2011 and ensure local fans
were celebrating at the end of the inaugural
edition of the competition’s revamped version,
which saw the home team beat Great
Britain in an exciting semi-final tussle the
day before.
“An amazing week, a lot of things we
went through – the father of Roberto passed
away... a lot of things happened,” Nadal said.
“I could not be happier. It has been an
unforgettable moment in this amazing stadium;
we can’t thank the crowd enough. Our
team spirit prevails.”
RAHM’S MASSIVE DAY
SPAIN´S Jon Rahm birdied the final hole
to win the DP World Tour Championship
in Dubai on Sunday and to clinch the
European Tour’s season-long Race to
Dubai title.
Rahm holed a three-foot putt to finish
one ahead of England’s Tommy Fleetwood
and win the event for the second time.
The win also meant the 25-year-old
Spaniard also pipped Fleetwood, 28, to be
the number one in Europe for 2019.
Rahm becomes the second Spaniard to
achieve the feat after the late Seve Ballesteros,
who won it six times.
“Seve was such an idol for us,” said
Rahm. “To put my name there, it’s hard to
believe. I can’t believe some of the things I
have accomplished.”
It was his fourth win of 2019 and his
second in a row, having won the Open
de Espana in his last tournament seven
weeks ago.
The victory also takes him up to third
in the world ranking behind number one
Brooks Koepka of the United States and
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, and he
also secured the biggest winning cheque in
tournament golf of over 2.5 million euros
and a further 2 million euros for winning
the Race to Dubai.
