AN almost three day search
for a woman who went missing
in l’Alfas del Pi while walking
her dog ended in tragedy at
the weekend after her body was
found.
The alarm was first raised on 20
November when Belgian national
Dominique Francoise Wanet failed
to return home after her regular
stroll in the Albir beach area of the
municipality.
The Guardia Civil started their
by Simon Russell
missing person protocol and posted
details and a photo of Ms Wanet on
social media.
Fire crews and the police also
joined in the search and it was a
police officer who found her body
in a thicket of trees on Saturday 23
November.
No details regarding her cause
of death have been released to the
press at this stage.
TOPLESS protesters interrupted
the annual commemoration
for dictator General Franco,
who died 44 years ago.
The half-dozen women, from
the feminist group Femen, descended
on the Plaza de Oriente
in Madrid on Sunday chanting
“for fascism no honour and no glory,”
with the same slogan written
on their chests.
They were quickly removed
by police.
A few hundred Franco supporters
turned out for the event, held
around November 20th each year
to mark the anniversary of the
Pedro Sánchez
by Alex Trelinski
dictator’s death in 1975.
Jesus Munoz, the leader of the
fascist Falange party, said the
march was against the “desecration”
of Franco’s remains, which
were exhumed and moved from
the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum
in October, and against Spain´s
historical-memory law which recognises
those who suffered during
Franco’s dictatorship.
“Now they start desecrating
tombs, this is not going to be like
1936 (when the Spanish Civil
War started) but much worse,”
THE LARGEST separatist
party in the Catalunya region
has voted to support a new
national government in return
for talks on independence.
About 95 per cent of members
of the Esquerra Republicana de
Catalunya (ERC), a social democratic-based
party, backed the
move in a ballot.
The ERC could now become
kingmaker to the PSOE Socialists
who failed to win a majority
in this month's election, but
have decided to form a coalition
with the far-left Podemos party.
But their combined tally of
seats, 155, is still short of the 176
he stated.
During Franco’s brutal regime,
tens of thousands of his enemies
were killed and imprisoned in a
campaign to wipe out dissent, and
as many as half a million combatants
and civilians died in the civil
war of the late thirties.
Coalition offer
by Alex Trelinski
required to form a parliamentary
majority.
With the ERC's 13 seats and
a possible combination of support
from other leftist or Basque
parties, Prime Minister Pedro
Sánchez would find it easier to
continue in office at the head of
a coalition.
However, the PSOE have
firmly opposed granting Catalans
a legal independence referendum,
while recognising that
both Catalunya and the Basque
Country are nations within
Spain, and not just regions.
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 3
Orange banking
ORANGE has begun a mobile-only
bank in Spain,
tempting customers with
a discount on their mobile
phone bills.
Having launched in its
home market of France two
years ago, Orange Bank ar-
by Alex Trelinski
rived in Spain this week,
with customers able to open
a current account with a
Spanish Iban without any
registration fee.
The bank is also offering a
one per cent interest rate for
deposits of up to 20 thousand
euros and a 30 euro discount
on the customers' next mobile
bill.
The 100 per cent mobilebased
service, lets users
perform all their day-today
banking operations,
such as checking their expenses,
paying with Apple
Pay, moving money between
accounts, making
free Sepa transfers, and
managing their Mastercard
debit card.
The app also has chat
functionality where customers
can talk to bank agents,
while a "group management"
feature allows the
sharing or transfer of funds
and expenses among several
people.
Narciso Perales, general
director, Orange Bank in
Spain, says: "Our hallmark
as a leading telco enables
us to be the most suited to
design a mobile banking service
for today’s highly mobile
population."
I often wonder how people get drawn in
by scammers, you hear of it all the time
but how does it happen? How do people
allow it to happen?
I was recently approached by a couple
who were considering investing their
life savings. They had recently sold
their house here in Spain and wanted
a low risk investment which would
provide them with a steady income. In
the past this could have been achieved
by depositing cash with your bank and
getting a reasonable return on your
savings, however with interest rates at an
all-time low, people are being forced to
shop around.
So where do you start on your search for
an investment product? Well my clients
understandably googled ‘safe’, ‘low risk’
investments and were overloaded with
many different options. Not knowing
where to start, they postponed their
research and opted to speak with a
professional who can at least explain in
simple terms how investments work and
what would be most suitable. Days later,
my client was on his laptop checking
his emails when he noticed a ‘low risk’,
‘safe’, ‘capital protected’ advert appear
on the top of his screen. Inquisitively
he clicked on the advert and it took him
through to a professional looking website
where he discovered they had a fixed
interest savings plan which was capital
guaranteed and offered a set 6% return
for the next 5 years with NO FEES! This
is exactly what they were looking for so
they completed the form to receive further
information.
Days later they received a phone call
Finance Feature
provided by...
Are scammers becoming more sophisticated?
from the company who were based in
Malaga where a seemingly professional
adviser gave them confirmation that they
could have guaranteed returns of 33.82%
over 5 years with no risk to their original
capital. In fact he went as far as putting it
in writing to them, illustrating that if they
were to invest £50,000 in 5 years it would
be worth £66,910!! Being sensible they
started to research the company, and this
fixed interest, risk free savings plan. They
were re-assured by the professionalism
of the product, the company boasted that
they were operating in 189 countries
including UK, Spain, Hongkong, Thailand
and many more. Struggling to find
anything negative the couple agreed to
meet with their ‘so-called’ professional
adviser.
Having already made an appointment
to see me prior to this they popped into
the office to see what Chorus could offer
and it wasn’t long before the clients
were telling me all about the ‘risk-free’,
guaranteed returns that they were about
to sign up to, asking whether we had
anything similar.
Straight away I knew this was a scam! As
an independent adviser constantly looking
for the best options for my clients, and as
someone with nearly 10 year’s experience
advising here in Spain, all the alarm bells
began to ring.
As I started to investigate the product
in more detail, it became very clear,
very quickly that this was a completely
unregulated product, the capital guarantee
was about as useful as a chocolate teapot
and all over its literature were the words
‘for professional investors only’ (these
Dutch delight
by Alex Trelinski
A PASSENGER flying into Alicante-
Elche airport on Monday morning got
the surprise of her life when she disembarked
from her Transavia flight.
The lady, who flew in from Eindhoven
in the Netherlands, found herself showered
with gifts and a special certificate
which commemorated the fact that she
was the airport´s 14th million passenger
this year.
Her arrival symbolically beat last
year´s record figure of just under 14 million
passengers, with the facility set to
log another 500 thousand passengers by
the end of the year.
Passenger numbers for 2019 are up by
eight per cent on the 2018 figures.
were the words used on all the ‘Structured
Notes’ which were miss-sold and left
devastating damage to the life savings of
many here on the Costa Blanca as part
of the Continental Wealth scam). This
couple narrowly avoided a scam that could
have swallowed their entire life savings,
and do you know what………. It could
have easily happened. On the surface,
to an untrained eye, this product looked
legitimate, and it was a mixture of luck
and fate that walked them into my office
that day.
I’m sorry to say, but in a world where
central bank interest rates are effectively
0%, it is impossible to guarantee returns.
The idea of a guaranteed, capital protected
5, 6 or 7% is preposterous to anyone who
knows their stuff, and truly understands
our current economic environment.
Yes, there are low risk, highly diversified
investment funds out there that have
consistently achieved growth over many
years, but they are not guaranteed and the
risks need to be properly discussed with
an independent professional to assure
suitability.
My advice is stay clear of the internet
when it comes to shopping for
investments, seek professional advice
and make sure the company and the
products you use are fully regulated and
are appropriate for you. By fully regulated
this means they will be listed with local
regulators here in Spain, and preferably
other trusted regulators like the UK FCA.
Whether it’s a product provider or a ‘socalled’
financial adviser, they are legally
obliged to clearly display their regulatory
details, reference numbers etc on everything
– articles, business cards, emails etc.
Always get a second opinion before you
commit to anything and remember, if it
seems to good to be true, it probably is. If
you are considering any new investment
Pepper spray attack closes station
Kidnapped and assaulted
A WOMAN who was kidnapped
in the northern
Spanish town of Pamplona
and held for 48 hours was
eventually released by the
authorities at Vinaros, in
Hope fades for missing woman
THE family of a young missing
woman have admitted
they fear the worse while police
are looking for a man she
had arranged to meet online.
Marta Calvo Buron, aged 25,
has been missing since 6 November
and her last known location
was the small Valencian
town of Manuel.
She had arranged to meet a
35-year-old Colombian man in
by Simon Russell
a house there, details the authorities
gained from an interview
with her mother who had
received a text from Marta and
then no further communication.
The suspect has a police
record for drug trafficking
and his vehicle, a minivan,
was found abandoned
in a warehouse and is being
the Castellon province of
the Valencian Community.
The victim’s ordeal began
last weekend after she was
bundled into a car by her expartner.
The woman was reported
missing the next day
and the Navarra National
Police Corps started an
operation to find her.
Her ex was suspected and
later that day his vehicle was
forensically tested.
The property where the pair
met had been “thoroughly
cleaned” and the Guardia Civil
believe that this had been done
to hide forensic evidence.
The Guardia have been
searching the mountains near
Manuel for signs of Marta while
a major search is also underway
for the man she was last
seen with.
ONE of Valencia’s busiest
metro stations was forced
to close on Sunday morning
after a fight broke out
where pepper spray was
used.
The incident happened
at the Plaza España stop at
about 6am when a group of
youths who had left a nearby
club started brawling.
One of them used pepper
spray which affected innocent
bystanders, with three
of them having to be taken
spotted in Castellon, several
hundred kilometres away.
A police cordon was set
up and the vehicle stopped
while a 30-year-old man was
arrested.
He has been charged with
sexual assault, illegal detention
and actual bodily harm.
by Simon Russell
to a hospital.
The station had to be fully
aired out and the ventilation
system switched on to clear
the residual spray away.
The youngsters who
caused the problem had all
fled and no arrests have
been made, although CCTV
footage is being checked.

Death sentence
Spaniard
appeal rejected
Banged up abroad.
Segarra seems
in Bangkok
A SPANISH man sentenced
to death in Thailand
for the brutal murder
of a friend has had his final
appeal rejected by a
Thai court.
Artur Segarra, from Catalonia,
kidnapped, tortured
and murdered David Bernat
in 2016, chopping up his remains
and throwing them in
a river to hide the evidence.
His motives seem to have
been purely financial and
there is CCTV footage of
the victim and defendant
extracting money from cashpoints
after Mr Bernat had
been reported missing.
Segarra forced his friend
to withdraw just over €2,000
before killing him, something
backed up by DNA
evidence.
Although Thailand still
has the death penalty on its
statute books it is very rarely
used and has been under
an effective moratorium for
a decade.
Legal experts say that the
Asian country is highly unlikely
to use it on a foreigner
and the likely outcome for
Segarra is that he will serve
eight years of his life sen-
tence in Thailand and then
be returned to Spain to see
out the remainder of it.
At the time of the murder
the case made huge headlines
in Spain, casting the
spotlight on the lifestyle of
the large expatriate Spanish
community in Thailand and
in Bangkok in particular.
Talking about cancer
THE Hospital de Denia was
the venue last week for a
major gathering of experts
in the field of oncology, specifically
colon, breast and
gynaecological cancers.
The day focused on treatment,
clinical best practice
and research.
There was also a round
table and presentation on
genetic factors and their importance
in both early onset
cancer and that of senior
citizens.
by Simon Russell
Case studies of patients
treated at Denia Hospital
were used to illustrate the
work being carried out.
Spain is one if the leading
countries when it comes
to cancer treatment and clinicians
in this part of the
world have a lot of experience
with it, partly due to
the disproportionately older
citizenship that live on the
presents for people who
matter, you could do worse
than go to one of the two
Craft Fairs that Amata will
be holding in Altea (from 5
till 8 December) and Jávea
(6, 7 and 8 December).
Real craft fairs run by
real craft people who sell
only what they make themselves.
They can even make
something specially for you,
if you can't find what you are
looking for!
Altea
Altea is known as a very
artistic town with lots of
resident artists and a really
lovely old town, but the fair
will be held in the modern
part of town, in front of the
Town Hall (parallel to the
main road N332 but 100
yards inland).
Some 30 craft people will
gather there with all sorts of
original work. Pottery, glasswork,
wooden and soft toys,
leather, patchwork, design
jewelry and all the other special
stuff visitors to an Amata
fair have come to expect.
And of course the typical
delecacies of Christmas
time, cheeses and sausages
and even a stall with mulled
wine. There will also be a
small tavern with barbeque
and a stall offering waffles,
crèpes, hot chocolate or
mulled wine.
For the kids there will be
workshops, soap bubbles,
table games and a merry-goround.
On Friday noon time
the choir of U3A Calpe will
come and sing Christmas
carols and every day a lady
juggler brings extra life to
the fair, walking around on
stilts, telling stories to the
children, and, last thing in
the evening, dancing and
juggling with fire.
The fair starts on Thursday
the 5th of December at
6pm and lasts till Sunday
evening. Opening times
from 11am till 9pm (the fair
doesn't close at midday);
Sunday they will close a
bit earlier.
Jávea Port
The other fair that Amata
organises in the same long
The drug sub
weekend (both the 6th and
the 8th of December are
Bank holidays!) will be in
the Port of Jávea.
In a beautiful setting on
the sea side promenade
some twenty stalls will be
set up around an enormous
Christmas tree.
Every stall is offering
something different and as
all participants are real craft
people, they bring their tools
along so they can make small
changes or personalize a chosen
item, and can even accept
special orders if you don't find
what you are looking for.
Some artesans will be at
work in their stalls, so you
can see with how much love
and patience every item is
made. Here Sergio will play
well known (Christmas) melodies
on his violin and potter
José will bring his wheel
and offers you the chance to
make your own little bowl
or vase.
This fair opens on the
Friday morning, 6 December,
and the opening times
for the three days are from
11am continuously till 8pm,
although on Sunday they
close at 6pm.
Woman dies during
plastic surgery op
AN investigation has been
launched by the police after
a 23-year-old woman
died after what should
have been a standard
plastic surgery operation.
Lita Betancourt, a Colombian
national who lived
by Simon Russell
in Spain, died at Valencia’s
9 de Octubre Hospital
when undergoing breast
augmentation surgery.
A private company carried
out the procedure and have
denied negligence saying
that this went well, and that
the hospital was to blame
which was responsible for
post-surgical care.
However, sources say that
the operation “took longer
than it should have” as
“something had gone wrong”.
What is known is that Ms
Betancourt suffered 80%
brain death and slipped
into a coma before passing
away.
A judge has ordered a full
and clear investigation of
the private surgical firm and
the hospital.
TWO people have been
arrested in northwest
Spain after they were
caught piloting a submarine
that was being used
for trafficking drugs.
D Day veteran
celebrates
100th birthday
PERCIVAL Chafer celebrated
his 100th birthday last
week with two ‘bashes’.
The first was held on the
actual day of his birthday at
Eduardos, Villamartin Plaza.
That was last Tuesday
night, a dinner with family
and friends, and then on Friday
a much more informal
party was held for the former
‘Desert Rat’ in Chemies
Lounge, where the sprightly
centenarian was entertained
by Dan Davy.
Earlier in the week Percy
was also delighted to receive
a birthday card signed personally
by Queen Elizabeth
II. The card was delivered by
recorded post to Correos in
Playa Flamenca from where
it was picked up by son Tony.
On Friday morning Percy
had another surprise when
he was visited by the Chairman
and Vice Chairman
of the Orihuela Costa and
District Branch of the Royal
British Legion, Kevin Reardon
and Eddie Coleman, who
gave him a birthday card
from members before presenting
him with a Certificate
of Loyal Service and Lifetime
Honorary Membership of
the Branch.
Working on the railways
at the time Percy was called
up for active service shortly
after the outbreak of WW2.
After basic training in Aldershot
he was moved to
the north of Scotland from
where he then set sail for the
Middle East.
Percy spent the next 3
years in Africa with the 7th
armoured brigade, with
whom he fought in many of
the major battles in North
Africa, including Operation
Crusader in November. During
that period he served in
Egypt, Libya and Tunisia,
taking in Tobruk, Benghazi
and Tripoli.
In 1942 he moved to 30
Corps with whom he travelled
back to Europe serving
in the reclamation of France
from June 1944 in the Allied
Invasion of Normandy, and
then in Operation Market
Garden, in the Netherlands,
and finally in Operation
Veritable in Germany until
May 1945.
Picking up many awards
and medals along the way,
just 3 years ago at a ceremony
held at the French
Embassy in London, Percy
was awarded with the coun-
Eddie Coleman, Vice Chairman of the Orihuela Costa
and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, along
with Graham Flood, Percy, Nicky Evans and son Tony
try’s highest distinction, the
Légion d’honneur, by French
Ambassador Sylvie Bermann.
The presentation took
place in the presence of Lord
Howe, Deputy Leader of the
House of Commons and Minister
of State for Defence.
Percy travelled back to his
London home in Pimlico on
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 9
Sunday but now, as a member
of the Orihuela Costa
Branch of the RBL he says
that his visits to Villamartin,
where he shares an apartment
with son Tony, will be
much more frequent, as he
intends to get to know the
members of his new branch
rather better.
Doing well for democracy
SPAIN has taken a big leap
up the league table of the
globe’s most democratic
countries, rising seven
places to 13th, ahead of
the UK among others.
The list is compiled annually
by the Denmark based
International Institute for
Democracy with Spain scoring
0.7705 out of a possible
1.00.
by Simon Russell
All countries were independently
assessed on four main
areas, local and national democracy,
fundamental rights,
government control and participatory
commitment.
The latter was judged
to be Spain’s weakest area
while they scored very well
on local democracy.
Ancient graffiti
RENOVATION work at the
Basilica de Socorro in
Aspe (Alicante) has uncovered
dozens of examples
of graffiti, much of it going
back centuries.
The daubing’s have been
carved into the stone rather
than painted on, some of it
dated and signed while others
are able to be dated due
to their style.
An example is one that portrays
Napoleon Bonaparte
(1769 to 1821) with his trademark
tricorn hat and cape.
Others include soldiers with
cannons, religious figures,
animals, plants and, to prove
that not much has changed in
300 years, naked women.
Archaeologist Felipe Mijas
Festivities suspended after brawl
THE authorities in Teulada
took the decision to cancel
the Mig Any de Quintades
celebrations after a fight
broke out in the marquee
where they were being
held on Saturday night.
It is not known what
sparked the aggression but
soon a large number of people
were involved in the brawl
and the Local Police and
Guardia Civil were called out.
by Simon Russell
Several people were hurt,
and one man hospitalised
while a number of complaints
were filed with the
Guardia Civil.
The Teulada-Moraira Town
Hall issued a statement saying
“No form of aggression
will be justified in this municipality
and no attacks against
the physical harm caused,
resulted in the total loss of
the usual good atmosphere
as well as various material
damages that the city
council will now have to assume
They went on to praise the
swift action of the local police
and the Guardia officers.
Cancer Care Javea, Denia
the Laboratory of Molecular
The laboratory is equipped
All’s well that
ends well
A THREE hour rescue operation
for a dog that had
fallen down a well at the
weekend ended happily
after the unnamed pooch
was rescued.
The Labrador sized animal
was stuck 20 metres
by Simon Russell
down the well in the Valencian
town of Quart de Poblet
on Saturday afternoon.
Local firefighters were
called to the scene and after
realising that the dog was
well and truly stuck had to
design a special drum type
contraption.
They eventually managed
to get the frightened animal
into the device, and it was
then extracted, wet and cold
but otherwise unharmed.
A PROMINENT local figure in
the controversial Vox political
party has found themselves
at the centre of a social meby
Simon Russell
Lucky
puppy
dia storm after seemingly
making veiled threats
to a schoolteacher.
The unnamed professor
of history had labelled
the party as extreme right
wing when discussing it
with pupils, including Ms
Sanchez son, something
she took exception to.
Ms Sanchez, a failed
candidate for Petrer Town
Hall at the last election
posted to them on Facebook
“The indoctrination of
our children is over.
You will not have a
my son and the rest of the
students that Vox is from
the extreme right.”
She went on to threaten
the teacher with being
sued for libel.
In the Spanish press
and media Vox is usually
described as either right
wing, far right wing, extreme
right wing or even
as a fascist party.

Santa lands
early for Jalon
Valley help
YET again, the Annual
Christmas Bazaar proved
a great success with the
residents of Jalon and the
valley, when they gathered
together last Sunday.
Fundraising was the main
aim of the day, but to give
everyone a good day out was
Guess the
weight of
the cake by
Mary Wood
high on the list of priorities,
with a great variety of stalls
to grab visitor’s interest.
Many look forward to this
event every year and they
weren’t disappointed.
Some thought it was
almost cold enough for
Santa’s sleigh to land on
some snow, but there was
a warm welcome from all
the stallholders.
The fashion show proved really
popular and highlighted
the great variety and top quality
of the clothes available in
the Jalon Valley Help shops in
Alcalali, Jalon and Orba.
The models did a grand job
and the commentary by JVH
President, Elaine Horton,
was very entertaining.
The raffle was a central
part of the day and many
were looking forward to the
call that they had won one of
the super prizes.
The volunteers worked
really hard to put this Super
Sunday together, but it
didn’t just stop once the last
customer had left the Pensionistas
building. All the
clearing up and counting of
the all the cents then took
place, but it all proved really
worthwhile as 4,500 euros
had been raised for the good
works of Jalon Valley Help.
President Elaine Horton
thanked all those that had
supported the event and the
many organisations that
had come along to make sure
there were lots of interesting
stalls. Elaine declared the
day “another great event for
the charity”.
Entertainment on the day
was provided by the Val de
Pop singers and the, always
popular, Elderly Brothers.
Keep an eye open for the
carol singing to come in December
in Orba on the 14th in
square in Jalon on the 17th.
have been captured, sterilised
and released back, 101
males and 144 females.
In 2018 this figure was 161
and in 2017, the first year
of the government funded
campaign, it was 147.
The work is carried out by
a specialist company and the
“capture, sterilise, release”
method is considered both the
most effective and humane.
Benidorm has 34 known
colonies around the town,
many of them in the heart
of the tourist areas where
they are fed and watered by
visitors alike.

Aids awareness for school
AS part of the Aids Awareness
Day commemorations
Red Cross volunteers
have installed an information
table at a communal
area in L’Arabi secondary
school in l’Alfas del Pi.
This will be manned and
have information on the
disease appropriate for both
younger and older pupils at
the school with the emphasis
by Simon Russell
being on prevention.
This is a collaboration
with the town hall, specifically
the Health and Education
Departments as well
as the headmistress of the
school.
Aids Awareness Day is on
the 1 December and is an
international event.
Alfas makes its
name in Algeria
by Simon Russell
UNLIKELY as it sounds,
there is a school in the
western region of Algeria
that shares its name with
l’Alfas del Pi.
It is in the Saharawi refugee
camp (Ausserd) and is
funded by the Marina Baixa
town’s Department of Social
Welfare and the Juita
Friends of the Saharaiu People
whose president visited
last week.
The centre is for young
people who suffer from visual
and aural impairment
who often have no specialist
help in this part of the
world.
There are currently 13
children at the school aged
between three and fourteen,
helped by nine teachers
and carers with special
training.
Alfas has strong links with
this part of the world and
the Juita association currently
has over 100 members
since being established three
decades ago.

The organisation has a
work such as teaching first
aid, employment training
for young people, helping
schoolchildren in danger of
volunteer activities.
This is primarily funded
by the town hall grant of
€5,000 which supports the
valuable works in Alfas.
The signing off ceremony
was conducted in Benidorm
with the mayor and Mara
Calpe
Local&WhatsOn
The Costa Blanca – more than just Benidorm
CALPE City Council is
carrying out a tourist information
initiative to offer
itself as an alternative
to travellers who don’t
fancy Benidorm for their
holidays.
They feel there are a number
of people who think that
Benidorm is the only resort
on this stretch of coast and
by Simon Russell
often choose Spanish places
such as the Canary Island as
an alternative.
However, if you travel a
few kilometres up the coast
Calpe is refreshingly different
from its noisy neighbour
with wide beaches, safe bathing
and a huge choice of quality
places to eat and drink
with barely a stag party or
hen do in sight.
The delegation is using the
travel fair at the Penyal Village
to promote this image
which has 350 travel agents
in attendance, most of them
prominent in the UK holiday
market.
Water carry on
by Simon Russell
EVEN though Calpe’s desalinisation
plant expansion is
badly needed in the mid to
short term to avoid supply
problems, there is one major
problem – it is technically an
illegal structure.
The Olta plant was built on
land not zoned for industrial development,
meaning the updates
and upgrades needed are currently
on hold.
The issue is now starting a
period of public consultation including
a resident’s survey.
If this is favourable it may be
that the modifications needed can
get underway some time in 2020.
Let the music play
by Simon Russell
AFTER a wait of almost
a decade and a half, the
Calpe Musical Union finally
have their own dedicated
facility to teach, practice
and perform in.
The project to build
the centre was originally
signed off in 2006 but various
delays and changes of
town hall leadership had
constantly delayed the
works.
However, Mayor Ana Sala
handed the keys over to
Miguel Pastor, the president
of the society, in a special
ceremony this week.
€250,000 had been set
aside this year to finish and
adapt the building on Avenida
Puerta Santa Maria,
which is about 500m 2 and
has classrooms, a practice
area and full facilities.

CUTE OTTER
RESCUE
I’M sucker for a nice animal tale, so I bring you news
of a baby otter being rescued after being found wandering
in a busy Aberdeenshire street.
The Scottish SPCA said the “tiny” otter was spotted in
Inverurie by a member of the public on Monday.
The organisation said the otter and its mother may
have become separated after flooding.
Scottish SPCA inspector Amanda Watson said: “A brave
member of the public picked up a male otter early on Monday
morning on a busy street, quite near the river.
“The pup is now in the care of our National Wildlife Rescue
Centre. He will stay with us until he is a year old as
that’s how long otters stay with their mothers in the wild.”
She added: “It was the most adorable encounter I’ve had
on a Monday morning in a long time.”
STRANGE PRIORITY
A builder and a shop worker have been
named as the winners of a £105m EuroMillions
jackpot.
Steve Thomson, 42, and his wife Lenka,
41, from West Sussex, were the sixth jackpot
prize winners in the UK this year, operator
Camelot said.
Their ticket won £105,100,701.90 on 19 November,
the 25th anniversary of the National
Lottery’s first draw.
Mr Thomson said when he realised he had
won that he felt he was “on the verge of having a
heart attack”.
I suspect that he will have multiple coronaries
as many friends will suddenly start crawling out
of the woodwork.
I just cannot understand why any lottery jackpot
winner wants publicity over their success,
unless they just fancy a moment in the limelight
and a bit of showing off.
ESSEX Police is investigating
claims that an officer ordered a
driver to remove a “B******* to
Brexit” sign from his car.
Peter Cook says he was a passenger
in the Mini Cooper – which
had the anti-Brexit message emblazoned
across it – when it was pulled
over on the M25 near Brentwood on
Sunday afternoon.
Footage posted on Twitter purportedly
shows the officer standing
next to the vehicle as a man
– believed to be the driver –
crouches down to remove some of
the lettering.
Mr Cook told Sky News that he
is pursuing a complaint against the
police and wants a “full and frank
unreserved apology” over the incident.
He is considering requesting a
donation to a charity which equates
to the cost of the removed lettering.
In the video, Mr Cook is heard
describing the officer as “very aggressive”
and claims the officer told
him he could not even say the word
“b*******” because “ladies may be
present, even though they’re not”.
MAKING
A MINT
THE UK’s largest ever coin has been
released and it is big enough to serve
your dinner on. Royal Mint has today
unveiled its five kilo record-breaking
coin, worth at least £5,000.
Made from alloy 999 Au Fine Gold, the
impressive coin has a diameter of 175mm,
and one of them has already been bought
for an undisclosed amount.
It is part of a new ‘Great Engravers’
series, that celebrates artists who have
worked on British coinage and begins with
Royal Academician William Wyon’s Una
And The Lion design.
Wyon was the chief engraver at the Royal
Mint from 1828 until his death in 1851 and
was most famous for his coin and medal
portraits of Queen Victoria. He is also
well-known for his design of Una And The
Lion, considered by collectors as one of the
world’s most beautiful coins.
A SIMPLE IDEA
THERE have been times down the
years when you were never quite
sure whether you should give
up your seat on a bus for somebody
who you reckon might need
it more.
I was actually told a couple of times
by elderly travellers that I was insulting
their capabilities of standing,
so I started not to bother, and made
me feel mean.
So I like the idea from Nottingham
where bus and tram users will be offered
“happy to move for you” badges
to let disabled and elderly people
know they can request their seat.
The move has been welcomed by
disability campaigners who said it
would help, but added it was “sad”
the initiative was needed.
A Nottingham council spokeswoman
said disabled people, especially
those with invisible disabilities, had
reported receiving very negative responses
when they asked people on
public transport to give up their seats.
This nice idea I hope will work and
spread across Britain.

Alex
Trelinski’s
Stars In My Eyes
A STRICTLY TEASER
Not that many years ago The X Factor(now
pumping out a sub-standard “celebrity”
version) would be good at grabbing
tabloid publicity, but the ever-excellent
Strictly Come Dancing has stuffed it in
getting all the column inches:- good for
ratings, of course!
But after a few years of romances
between dance partners, some of which
have gone pear-shaped, we are being
teased, probably by BBC “insiders” that
there´s an unlikely new couple behind the
scenes.
A Daily Star report quoted an “insider”
as saying:- “You wouldn´t put these two
together. If people knew they had been
quickstepping to the bedroom, then they
would be stunned”.
Allegedly the attraction started early on
in the contest but the “insider” claimed
that they could “no longer hold back”, and
that “gossip” has started to spread.
Good luck to Craig and Bruno, I say! Only
joking!
On the dance floor, expect either CBBC
presenter Karim Zeroual or ex-Emmerdale
star(and last minute replacement) Kelvin
Fletcher to be victorious next month, with
both guys also possessing the “highlikeability”
factor.
BANKRUPT KATIE
Katie Price has been declared
bankrupt in a hearing at the High
Court, which was told she had failed
to stick to a plan to repay her debts.
The former model and reality TV
star was not present at the London
hearing.
Last year, Price, 41, came to an
arrangement with her creditors
for a repayment plan known as an
Individual Voluntary Arrangement
(IVA).
But the insolvency practitioner
overseeing her IVA said she had
failed to keep to the terms of the
agreement.
Now that she’s been made bankrupt,
the Official Receiver will take control
of her financial affairs and property.
Price, who lives in West Sussex, found
fame in the 1990s as a glamour model
under the name Jordan and was once
said to be worth more than £40m.
Just where has all the money gone?
GUESS WHO’S BACK
The Who were one of the first bands that I really
liked as a kid, and these days they are down to
the Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend, who have
known each other for 60 years.
They´ve done an interview with the excellent
Rolling Stone magazine ahead of a new album,
which is only the second to come from the band in
37 years!
Two of the founding four, namely Keith Moon in
1978, and then John Entwhistle in 2002, left us
too early, but in the Stone interview, Townsend
doesn´t lament their passing from a musical
perspective.
“It’s not going to make Who fans very happy, but
thank God they’re gone,” said Pete.
“They were difficult to play with and they never,
ever managed to create bands for themselves. I
think my musical discipline, my musical efficiency
as a rhythm player, held the band together.”
Other choices words followed in the interview, but
if nothing else(and there is plenty), The Who have
made plenty of headlines down the decades.
WAG
BATTLE
TRUCE
Social media in the last couple of months
has caught fire with the two footballing
wives of Coleen Rooney and Rebekah
Vardy trading blows, as Vardy was
accused of leaking stories about her to
the press.
But a pre-Xmas truce between the two
wives is on the horizon, as it has now been
claimed that, following her accusations,
33-year-old Rooney is hoping to make
peace with Jamie Vardy’s wife – who is set
to welcome her fifth child very soon.
According to another of the famous
“insiders”, the mum-of-four has
‘begrudgingly accepted’ that she may
have made ‘a mistake’ going about things
so publicly.
´Even though she still feels she was
justified in highlighting how she’s been
trying to get to the bottom of who was
leaking stories on her life, she also
accepts that, in hindsight, she could have
gone about it differently to save herself
from all this controversy,’ the source
revealed.
Coleen apparently wants to speak
to Rebekah directly in the next few
weeks, and that should be a high-end
conversation well worth waiting for.
Merry Xmas ladies!
GAVIN AND STACEY RETURNS
In days gone by I always used to get
excited by the UK television channels
announcing their Xmas and New Year
holiday schedules, even though we
knew was coming months earlier
because of the time it takes to
commission and make a programme.
ITV largely threw in the towel years
ago over the festive season, so the
BBC announcement this week was
crammed full of goodies, including Call
The Midwife, Mrs.Brown´s Boys, Dr.Who,
and a new Dracula series.
A highlight is a Xmas special of Gavin
and Stacey, a decade or so after the
series ended, but it my case it finished
just two months ago, since I bingewatched
all of the episodes for the first
time ever!
Better late than never, as there is only
a comedy like Fleabag(sadly finished)
that are of the same quality.
Poor old ITV will have to make do with
Corrie and Emmerdale as just about
the worthwhile cold turkey sum total of
their bargain-basement festive fare.

Is DIY Expat Financial
Planning a Good Idea?
In recent years it has become
something of a trend for the
masses to distrust experts.
Instead, many of us decide to
go it alone when tackling life’s
challenges because we all know
Google can diagnose health
symptoms and watching a short
YouTube video can help you
install a new shower!
But if you are considering
your wealth management and
retirement planning journey,
and are having reservations
about hiring a professional
to help you plan and manage
your money, is this a sensible
approach? What is involved in
DIY expat financial planning,
and is it going to fit in with your
expat lifestyle in Spain?
Are you cut out for DIY
wealth management?
When it comes to financial
planning, a ´do-it-yourself´
approach brings with it a great
many ongoing responsibilities.
To fulfill the required tasks you
will need to ensure that you
not only have the necessary
knowledge, expertise and
practical skills but also the time,
organisation and emotional
resilience which are integral to
the investment process.
There are five key criteria
essential to DIY financial
planning*:
1. You should love the
investment process and be so
passionate about investing
strategies that financial pursuits
already take up a large part
of your leisure time. If your
bedside reading consists of
books on economic theory, if
you enjoy an extended breakfast
with the Financial Times,
and you consider attending
an investing seminar to be a
relaxing break, you might just
be suited to managing your
own wealth.
2. Another important
qualifier for the DIY expat
financial planner is the ability
to comfortably make decisions
about your financial future.
This means that you must
not feel overwhelmed by the
process and the high stakes,
and that this responsibility does
not cause you to lose sleep at
night.
3. You will need to be
time-rich and prefer to spend
time reviewing your portfolios
rather than playing golf at or
hanging out with grandchildren.
It sounds harsh, but it’s true.
Good investment decisions
require research, planning and
accuracy.
4. You will need to be able
to withstand market volatility
without making rash decisions.
Investment portfolios inevitably
lose and gain value during times
of economic instability and you
must be able to withstand ups
and downs in the value of your
assets and investments without
making knee jerk trades or
heat-chasing purchases.
5. Can you keep your eyes
on the long-game? It is easy for
the self-investor to dip into their
savings accounts, pensions
and other assets without fully
appreciating how this might
affect future returns. Budgeting
and time-horizon planning are
key in this respect.
Only if the above describes
you to a tee would you be
a likely candidate for DIY
financial planning.
Robo-advisers – Are they a
good compromise?
Robo-advisers might seem
like the perfect halfway point
between DIY investment
and working with a human
financial adviser. However,
in reality most investment
platforms are little more than
glorified algorithms that take
some account of your risk
tolerance and goals, following
a short questionnaire, before
grafting your funds into a preconstructed
portfolio.
They are not personalised,
cannot talk to you, cannot
listen to you, and cannot help
you stay disciplined during
times of volatility. In contrast,
a professional financial adviser
will develop a relationship with
you and will integrate your
finances, tax considerations and
estate plans while also taking
account of all the unique crossborder
concerns that go handin-hand
with being an expat
living in Spain.
Lastly, a robo-adviser cannot
know – or care – if you are
having health issues, have
a grandchild with special
educational needs or are
wondering about the financial
implications of a divorce; a
human adviser can make an
invaluable difference at the
times when you need expert,
bespoke advice the most.
Tried and tested expertise
to advance your interests
Blacktower Financial
Management has more than
three decades of experience
advancing the financial
interests of our clients. We can
help you weather the financial
uncertainties and ramifications
of challenging times – such
as Brexit – so that you can be
secure in the knowledge that
your money will continue to
work for you.
We believe that attempting
to negotiate Brexit is likely to
present too many challenges
for the expat in Spain – both
emotionally and practically –
for DIY money management to
be a prudent option. The expat
financial advice sector remains
integral to helping British
people abroad reach their
retirement investment goals,
particularly in Spain, where
a climate of innovation and
opportunity has created real
excitement and momentum.
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 25
Business & Money
Getting your number
AN NIE number is vital if
you spend any time here
in Spain, and that applies
even to people who
spend a limited period in
the country and who own
a property, or want to do
most kinds of important
business including opening
a bank account.
If you want to buy a property
in Spain, you must get an
NIE, and time may be of the
essence, Sun Lawyers can
get it all sorted for you, and
make sure that you have all
the right papers to keep the
process as straight forward
as possible.
Get in touch with us to see
what we can do for you, and
here is a brief guide to the
world of the NIE:-
What is an
NIE?
Its full name is Número de
Identidad de Extranjero,
which translates as ‘Foreigners’
Identification Number’.
All non-Spaniards require an
NIE in order to have a fiscal
identity in Spain.
You will need your unique
NIE number, which will
start with an ‘X’ or ‘Y’ followed
by seven or eight digits
and then a final letter,
to complete any type of financial
transaction or legal
documentation, from buying
a property or car, to starting
a business, being employed,
getting connected to utilities
and filing your Spanish
tax return (which even nonresident
homeowners must
do).
Some banks will ask for
your NIE just to open an
account with them.
Remember that an NIE is
a separate thing to getting a
residencia, which is a different
process altogether. New
arrivals in Spain should
obtain their NIE within 90
days of moving here, whether
or not they are purchasing
property.
Applying in
person
There is nothing stopping
braver people applying for
their NIE themselves, but
for peace of mind, Sun Lawyers
will take you through
everything, which is especially
daunting if you are
new to Spain.
Applications must be made
at any police station that has
an immigration office, or
‘Oficina de Extranjeros’.
You’ll need to submit your
completed NIE application
forms (EX-15) along with
supporting documentation.
You’ll also need to pay the
small application fee (approximately
€10) at a bank
using a Model 790 form,
showing proof of payment at
the police station.
Supporting documents
typically includes your
passport and photocopy of
the main page, a document
(and photocopy) that validates
your reason for getting
an NIE (eg a notarised
letter or deposit contract for
a property) and a passport
photo.
We will make sure that
you have the the right papers,
but in some instances,
you may need to make an
appointment, otherwise you
can simply turn up, but be
prepared to wait.
Once your application is
submitted, you must wait
for your NIE certificate to
be issued, ready for collection
from the police station
or sent by post to an address
in Spain.
Using Sun
Lawyers
In the vast majority of cases,
it really does make sense to
use a legal firm that you can
trust, and that is where Sun
Lawyers are here to help!
Many of our clients ask
for this to be included in the
package of services we provide
them, so that you have
more time to deal with the
property purchase.
It gives you one less thing
to worry about at the start of
your buying journey, helping
to make the whole process
more enjoyable.
Sun Lawyers will ensure
that your application form is
completed properly (in Spanish),
that all the supporting
documentation is in order
and that the fee is paid.
Our local knowledge
means that we know not
only the most convenient police
station to go to, but we
will organise the best time to
go with you.
When your NIE certificate
is ready, we can then collect
it for you in your absence or
make sure that is posted to
one of our offices.
An even more hands-off
option is to grant us powerof-attorney
rights, which
means that Sun Lawyers
can take care of the whole
process in your absence.
The importance
of timescales
It’s not unknown for NIE
certificates to be ready for
collection or posted the same
day as the application was
submitted in parts of Spain,
but Sun Lawyers work on
the basis of a fortnight here
on the Costa Blanca.
For buyers who have committed
to a property purchase,
a delay getting your
NIE can hold up completion,
as your NIE must by law be
on your Escritura (deed).
In addition, not being able
to complete on the agreed
date can also land you with
a financial penalty.
The best option for buyers
right now is to apply for their
NIE as soon as possible, ideally
before you have found a
property you wish to buy.
Even safer, appoint Sun
Lawyers and give us power of
attorney to start the process
as early as possible.
And when you do find your
dream home, Sun Lawyers
could include a clause in
the purchase contract, typically
signed within 30 days
of reserving a property, protecting
you from penalties
if your NIE hasn’t arrived
by the agreed completion
date.
thinking about making the decision to
go solar, then you may be wondering -
how does sunlight actually gets turned
at night via moonlight, which, after all,
is reflected sunlight? To find out the
answer to these questions and a few
Getting smart
in your home
WHILE the phrase ‘smart
home’ provoked bewilderment
from the average
person a decade or so
ago, it is now very much
mainstream.
People start talking to
Google in the middle of conversations,
or ask it to turn
their lights off when they’re
in bed – they even ask ‘Alexa’
for advice.
Smart home devices are
edging seamlessly into our
lives and becoming items
that increasing numbers of
us use day in, day out without
a second thought.
However, if you’d place
yourself in the not-so-techsavvy
category, fear not.
Smart home expert Andrew
Georgiou, from hardware retailer
Robert Dyas, has the
answers to common questions
that may help you switch on.
1. What is meant
by a ‘smart
home’? Why is
it such a fastgrowing
area?
A smart home is a property
that features one or more
smart devices which can be
monitored and controlled remotely
via your smartphone
or other smart device.
You make commands on
your smart device either
manually or via voice control.
For example, you could ask
your Google speaker to turn
the lights on, or see and talk
to visitors at your door instantly
with the Ring Video
Doorbell 2.
It’s a fast-growing area
for two reasons: It’s highly
convenient as it can make
everyday life so much easier
and, as technology is
advancing, it’s becoming
more accessible.
2. What are the
benefits?
There are many benefits to
smart technology, depending
on the product you choose to
purchase. The main ones are:
CONVENIENCE
You can control your lighting,
heating and other elements
of your home right
from your smartphone.
SECURITY
You can be confident that
your family and property are
safe as you can see what’s
going on live at any time
and be alerted if something
happens.
MONEY AND ENERGY-
SAVING
Smart products can save you
money on bills by helping you
reduce the amount of energy
you use. There are heating
devices that let you control
your thermostat remotely,
smart bulbs with which you
can control your lighting,
even a smart plug that lets
you keep an eye on how much
energy you’re using.
3. Where should
I start? Do I need
to start with a
voice-activated
personal
assistant system?
Most people will start with
something small like a
smart plug or a smart light
bulb. This helps them under-
stand the benefits of smart
products, and more devices
can be added and connected
up from there.
A great way to start would
be to get a smart speaker,
such as a Google speaker,
as then you can follow it up
with products that are compatible.
Some devices may
only be compatible with Amazon
Alexa for example. Often
they’re compatible with
multiple systems.
THE number of non-Spanish property
buyers fell over by just over
three per cent in the first half of
2019, compared to the same period
last year, according to the latest
report from the Association of
Spanish Notaries.
In total foreign buyers acquired
51,720 homes in Spain in the first
six months of the year, compared to
53,427 the same period last year, a
decline of three point two per cent,
and the first annual decline after seven
and a half years of uninterrupted
growth.
Spanish internal demand also
fell in the same period, by two point
eight per cent to 226,594 home sales
in the first half of 2019.
As a result, the overall market
fell by two point nine per cent to
278,314, and foreign demand made
up 18.6 per cent of the property
market – a share that has hardly
changed between 2013 and 2018.
Foreign demand breaks down into
non-resident buyers with 21,210
acquisitions (41 per cent of foreign
demand), principally holiday-home
buyers from northern Europe, and
by Alex Trelinski
full-time residential buyers with
30,510 purchases (59 per cent),
which feature a lot of economic migrants
from countries like Morocco
and Romania.
Non-resident demand was down
nine point seven per cent, the third
consecutive half-yearly decline,
whilst expat demand continues
to grow (up by just under two per
cent), albeit at a much lower rate
than before.
The main destinations for foreign
buyers were the Valencian Region,
Andalucia, and Catalunya, though
demand(especially in coastal holiday
areas) fell in Valencia and Andalucia,
but actually went up in Catalunya.
The biggest and somewhat dramatic
falls in foreign demand were
in the Canaries (down by 20 per
cent) and the Balearics (down by almost
14 per cent).
British buyers have continued
to dominated the foreign market,
with 6,681 purchases, followed
by purchasers from Morocco and
France.
Property
prices in
steady
increase
THE average house price
in Spain increased by
just over 3% in the third
quarter of the year compared
to the same period
in 2018.
The average price per
square meter is now
€1,638.30, 3.1% more than
the previous year but still
22% less than the peak in
by Simon Russell
2008 when the figure was
€2.101 per square metre.
However, it is a healthy
12.5% more than the low
point of €1,456 recorded
in 2014 at the peak of the
Spanish property crisis.
Market analyst Ferran
Font said that the latest
figures showed a steady upward
trend with this being
the eighteenth consecutive
month when prices have
increased.
The Valencian Community
performed above the market
average with rises of 4.6%
while the Balearics (4.8%)
had the biggest rise across
the country.
Take care when
heating your home
AS winter draws in and
people start heating their
properties, the Valencian
Fire Consortium have
given some advice about
safety at a time of year
when their call outs always
increase dramatically.
Almost half the house fires
they have attended this year
were between January and
April, with the numbers falling
away dramatically when
by Simon Russell
the weather warmed up.
The biggest cause is electrical
heating appliances in
poor condition, causing shirt
circuits.
Badly ventilated appliances
such as stoves, radiators
and fires also started a number
of blazes and people need
to be aware of the dangers of
carbon monoxide build-up
which can be fatal.
They advise householders
to check all devices, place
smoke alarms around the
property and never leave
open flames such as candles
burning overnight or if you
are likely to doze off.
Last year across Spain 123
people died in house fires,
16 of them in the Valencian
Community, a mixture of
burns and smoke inhalation.
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 33
Starting from scratch
SPAIN offers many different
types of properties
compared with say the
UK. Before you start looking,
you should be very
clear on the following:
1. Why are you buying?
(holiday home, investment,
somewhere
to retire…)
2. How will you spend
your time there? (relaxing,
having family come
to visit, doing sports…)
3. Are you going to rent
out the property to cover
the costs?
4. New build or a secondhand
property? Surrounded
by natives or
among fellow Brits?
by Alex Trelinski
5. Which is more important
for you: budget, location,
property type or
nearby facilities?
Types of
properties
SEASIDE APARTMENTS
These tend to be built
specifically as holiday homes.
Aside from the obvious
advantages of sun, sea and
sand, these properties generally
come with shared facilities
like swimming pools and
tennis courts, all included
within the community.
What’s more, thanks to this
they are quite easy to rent
out when you’re not there.
Research carefully because
prices can vary wildly based
on location and proximity to
the beach.
HOUSES AND VILLAS
Another option is to buy a
house in a town or city, or
the outskirts but of course
the price can still depend on
the exact location.
New builds are attractive
for their balconies and
gardens, although older
properties may cost less.
Take care, though, as the
longer ago it was built, the
lower the construction quality
and the more renovation
is needed.
Houses in residential estates:-
Also known as ‘residential
developments’, urbanisations
offer a mix of
most things you could want
– bars, restaurants and
shops – without ever having
to go too far.
There's lots of choice as
they can contain apartments,
houses and villas,
although some are smaller
and don't contain any extra
amenities.
COUNTRY HOMES
A finca or casa rural may
be the most romantic of all
Spanish dream homes, a cot-
tage with land aplenty in the
open countryside.
Often, they will be older
builds, so be sure that what
you are buying has all the
basics – running water,
sewer pipes, electricity etc. A
specialist lawyer will be able
to help you avoid any pitfalls
like the above.
Pets
Make it
a happy
Christmas
CHRISTMAS is coming hyperactivity and seizures.
and animal welfare experts
are calling on pet
owners to make sure their
four-legged friends stay
safe and healthy over the
festive period.
Vets say they always see
an increase in diet-related
cases over the holidays –
with chocolate the biggest
problem.
Chocolate is toxic to almost
all animals as it contains
Dogs will sniff chocolate
out so it is important that
you keep your human treats
well out of reach.
Giving your dog or cat
bones or the turkey carcass
after your Christmas dinner
may also seem like a treat.
However, vets warn that
pets can easily choke on
them or sustain internal injuries
if the bones splinter.
Cooked bones in particular
a substance called splinter easily.
theobromine – the higher
the cocoa content, the more
toxic the treat.
Theobromine affects the
heart, central nervous system
and kidneys. A lethal
dose for a medium sized dog
is about 10 squares of dark
chocolate.
Symptoms may show between
two and 24 hours after
the chocolate has been eaten
and pets can suffer vomiting,
diarrhoea, restlessness,
Sharing your Christmas
dinner with your pets can
also cause trouble. Pets are
not use to eating rich, high fat
foods and as a result can suffer
from indigestion, vomiting
and diarrhoea.
Even if as an owner you
are aware of the dangers remember
to tell your visitors
not to share with your pets.
And some of our favourite
festive treats – such as
Christmas cake and coffee
coated raisins, can be fatal
to our pets.
Grapes and raisins can
cause kidney failure and
macadamia nuts are particularly
toxic causing hyperthermia,
vomiting, weakness,
depression and tremors.
Dogs are more sensitive to
caffeine than people so keep
them away from coffee beans
and tea bags.
Onions, garlic and chives
can, if ingested cause irritation
to the stomach and damage
the red blood cells. Cats
are more susceptible but
dogs can be affected if a large
enough amount is consumed.
Avocados contain a substance
called persin in their
leaves, bark, fruit and seeds.
It can lead to stomach upsets
in dogs and more serious
problems in birds and
rodents.
And it is not just food, there
are a number of other hazards
that pet owners need to
be aware of at Christmas.
Many people put pot pourri
out at Christmas time or
receive it as a gift and leave
it under the tree. The oils in
pot pourri can be really toxic
to pets if ingested and can
cause neurological problems.
Some cats are fond of nibbling
on houseplants but
several of the most common
festive plants are poisonous
to cats - including holly, mistletoe,
lilies and poinsettia.
Decorations have also been
known to result in pet injuries.
Cats are notorious for
consuming tinsel and ribbon
which can become stuck in
the intestine. So never give
your pets tinsel to play with.
Shiny baubles can also
be seen by pets as toys. Remember
that some baubles
are made of glass and can
shatter and cut your pet.
And make sure your Christmas
tree is secure – cats like
climbing them!
Adoption Corner
Laddie is a small Podenco
and has had all his
injections, has a passport, a
microchip and is castrated.
He has a very sweet
temperament and is used
to other dogs, he’s ready
to go now and can travel
to the UK or elsewhere.
Health&Lifestyle
Want to know more
about your smear test?
by Chanel Prins,
Roc Mondriaan, intern
at Family Medical Centre
A SMEAR test, also called
Cervical Screening, is
a check to know if your
cervix is healthy. It is not
a test to find Cancer, it is
a test where you look at
the changes in the cells of
your cervix. This way you
can detect abnormal cells
before they actually become
cancerous. During
this test, a sample of your
cells will be taken from
your cervix.
It is important to frequently
have cervical screening,
ideally every year.
Different European counties
vary. However, it is
often recommended to begin
screening either at age
25 or when you become
sexually active (whichever
comes first!!)
A Cervical screening may
check for: abnormal cell
changes in your cervix.
If you don’t treat this, the
cells can turn into cancer
cells. It can also check for the
HPV virus.
Some types of HPV can
change your cells in the cervix
and that can also lead to
Cancer.
A Cervical screening is
mostly done by a female
nurse or doctor. Your appointment
takes about 10 to
15 miutes.
During this test, you have
to lie down, with your legs
bent and your knees apart.
Then the nurse will gently
insert a speculum into your
vagina so she can see the
cervix. Then she takes a soft
brush and takes a sample of
the cells. After that, she will
close the speculum and remove
it.
Now you’re done with the
test!
Results usually take two to
four weeks.
Thankfully most test results
come back normal so
you have to do the test again
in about one year.
If the test was unclear,
you will be asked to come
back in three months to repeat
the test. You may be
given some treatment before
the retest. You will be advised
of how you will receive
the results.
The test results can be:
• NEGATIVE: This means
that everything is normal
and you should come back
in about a year.
• INADEQUATE: This means
that they didn’t get
enough cells during the
test. You should come
back in 3 months to do the
test again.
• CONTAMINATED: This
means that there was
some blood or discharge
on the sample and they
couldn’t check your cells
properly. This means that
you also have to come back
in 3 months to repeat.
• POSITIVE: This means
that there might be something
wrong with your
cells. These results can
come back as: Cin 1, Cin 2,
Cin 3.
• Cin 1: There mild changes
in your cells. This
affects only 1/3 of the
thickness of the surface
layer of your cervix. This
is not Cancer and in
most cases this will also
not lead to Cancer.
• Cin 2: There are some
moderate changes in
your cells. This affects
2/3 of the thickness of
the surface layer of your
cervix.
• Cin 3: There are more
severe changes in your
cells. This affects the full
thickness of the surface
layer of your cervix.
Both Cin 2 and Cin 3 do
not mean that there cancer
cells.
With Cin 3 it is important
to treat it as soon as possible.
So don’t fear the smear, it
could save your life!
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 37
Health&Lifestyle
Eye condition
that will affect
millions of us
THE leading cause of irreversible
blindness and severely
impaired eyesight is
expected to affect 77 million
people across Europe
by 2050, health experts
are warning.
The rise in cases of the
degenerative eye condition
age related macular degeneration,
or AMD for short,
will require “considerable
extra healthcare resource
and planning”.
Most of the cases will be
in people aged over 70, according
to the latest calculations,
published online
in the British Journal
of Ophthalmology.
The researchers predict
that rates of the condition
will rise by 15 per cent –
from 67m in 2015 to 77m in
the middle of the century.
AMD occurs when the
small central portion of the
retina, the light-sensing tissue
at the back of the eye
deteriorates with age. When
advanced, it can be treated,
but not cured.
The damage that the condition
causes cannot be reversed.
The exact cause is
unknown. It has been linked
to smoking, high blood pressure,
being overweight and
having a family history
of AMD.
It usually first affects
people in their 50s and 60s.
And it can make everyday
activities like reading and
recognising faces difficult.
Researchers from the University
of Bonn in Germany
looked at existing rates of
the disease to try and predict
how its impact would
increase in future.
Their estimated projections
show that one in four
older adults in the EU will
have AMD.
The researchers, led by Dr
Jeany Li, warn: “This will
require considerable additional
healthcare service and
resource allocation, which
should be considered already
today in all European
healthcare systems.”
AMD is a condition in
which the macula – a part
of the light-sensing retina at
the back of the eye – begins
to wear down and fail.
Symptoms can begin with
a blurred or distorted area
of vision which may then
progress to a blank spot.
This can later lead to a
complete loss of vision in
the centre of the eyes, but
it doesn't affect peripheral
vision and as such does not
lead to total blindness.
Cape
Town
Penguins, Mountains
& Beaches
FIRST-TIME visitors to
Cape Town tend to be immediately
struck by the
city’s beauty – and indeed,
the city is often ranked as
one of the world’s most
attractive. Along with its
stunning coastline and
sandy beaches, relaxed
cafes and refined architecture,
a large amount of
credit for this must go to
Table Mountain.
Large, striking but not
imposing, the mountain provides
a unique, breathtaking
backdrop for South Africa’s
favourite city. However Table
Mountain also hints at
Cape Town’s wilder side, one
that may not be immediately
obvious.
The iconic mountain can be
reached by cable car, which
has a revolving platform so
everyone on board gets a view
during the journey. However,
the more adventurous can
experience the mountain by
foot. The keenest hikers can
tackle the Platteklip Gorge
route to the top, although
easier routes are available.
Regardless of the path taken,
keep your eyes peeled for
wildlife – the mountain is
home to the dassie, the closest
living relative to the African
elephant, as well as colourful
lizards, native birds and
more species of plant than the
entirety of the UK.
Most unusually, Cape
Town is also home to penguins.
Yes – you heard right!
You can drive to Boulders
Beach, where the penguins
are found, or take a kayaking
tour to get up close to the
rocks on which the penguins
perch. Extend your kayaking
trip around Cape Point,
where whales and dolphins
can often be spotted.
Other exciting activities
include South Africa’s latest
craze of sandboarding,
on offer a short drive outside
Cape Town. Similar to
snowboarding, sandboarding
sees thrill-seekers slide
down sand dunes at speed. If
that sounds too much, basic
routes are available for firsttimers
or the faint of heart.
Of course, Cape Town offers
far more than just adventure
– visitors can have the
holiday of a lifetime and only
break a sweat sunbathing.
Camps Bay provides a long
sandy beach populated with
palm trees and is a favourite
of the locals to enjoy sundowners
in the long summer
evenings.
South Africa offers incredible
value for money. Prices
are down by 20% in Cape
Town compared to last year,
due to the Sterling’s strength
against the South African
Rand, according to the 2016
Worldwide Holiday Costs
Barometer from Post Office
Travel Money. This makes
Cape Town the lowest-priced
long haul destination surveyed
and the third cheapest
overall.
A culinary haven, Cape
Town diners can enjoy a
three-course meal for two
– including wine – for the
equivalent of around £23.00.
Real foodies should try Pot
Luck Club; the small plates
restaurant is a Luke Dale-
Roberts venture, one of the
world’s most innovative chefs
who also runs Test Kitchen,
a celebrity hangout and well
worth the three-month waiting
list for reservations.
And don’t forget the wine.
Cape Town is full of great
options for budding sommeliers.
A glass of wine costs
an average of £1.45 and the
Cape Winelands, located
just outside the city, provide
countless opportunities for
vineyard tours and tastings.
Alongside world-class
wines, Cape Town is in the
middle of a craft beer revolution.
The Weinhaus +
Biergarten bar was arguably
the birthplace of this
hop-inspired uprising, led
by local heroes such as Gary
Pnematicos, founder of Cape
Town’s own Citizen Beer. After
a few tipples, visit one of
Cape Town’s famed jazz bars.
A heady mix of saxophone,
piano and vocals can be found
at bars such as the Alexander
Bar Upstairs, Asoka, the
Crypt Jazz Restaurant and
the Piano Bar.
Fun for all the family!
FRIDAY 29TH NOVEMBER 2019 39
Utterly
Bellissima!
I boarded the MSC Bellissima
from Barcelona on Friday,
8th November. Checking
in was smooth and
swift. When check-in was
finished we got the chance
to pose for a picture with
my cabin-mate in front of
the ship’s wheel!
This was the first use of
our cabin card. Soon after
we were on the ship. Crew
had taken our luggage before
we checked in, so we didn’t
have to worry about wheeling
cases around. We made
a beeline for the Edge Bar,
to get ourselves comfortable
and raise a glass to the beginning
of our cruise with a
cocktail. We were on the Premium
Drinks Package, which
meant unlimited drinks up to
the value of €10. This gave us
lots of choice, and we had so,
so much to choose from!
The drinks menu is vast,
and everything is clearly labelled
and priced. Cocktails
are beautifully made! We enjoyed
sitting at the Edge bar,
people-watching. Beside us
were the famous Swarovski
stairs, and if you look down
you can see live music and
people enjoying themselves.
Our dining plan meant we
had dinner at a set time, at
a set table, at 7.30pm each
night. Our restaurant was
called Poseidonia. We got
ready, enjoyed a drink in the
champagne bar first, and
coming 7.30, made our way to
the restaurant.
We were presented by a
line of waiters on each side
of us welcoming us, which I
thought was a lovely touch.
We got shown to our table and
sat down, waters and wines
poured for us. Our waiters
were called Aslim and Pande,
and they took very good care
of us. The menu in Poseidonia
changes every night, with
some options available all the
time, such as grilled chicken,
or house salad. I loved the excitement
of not knowing what
would be on offer each night!
Dinner normally took 1.5 –
2hrs. I had the cheese board
for my dessert every night.
I honestly couldn’t fault a
single thing! On two of the
nights, a photographer came
around to each table, offering
by Karla McGarvey,
Worldwide Horizons
to take photographs, which
would be available for viewing
or purchasing the next
day. Again, a lovely touch and
nothing to lose!
After dinner, the ship is
buzzing with activity. There
are lots of shops. There’s a
perfumery, a shop selling top
jewellery and handbags, a
chocolate shop, and most of
these are open late. I got two
pieces of Swarovski jewellery
at a 20% discount, which is
great.
The gift shop with MSC –
themed items is also great,
and very reasonably priced.
We wanted somewhere we
could sit (8 of us) and chat
and have a laugh, and we
found ourselves at masters of
The Sea pub, on Deck 7. They
have a huge selection of beers
on tap, and something I’ve
never seen before, ‘Beertails,’
which is exactly what you
think it is – cocktails made
with beer! I recommend the
‘Spiced Apple Pie’ – mmmm!!
We were very well looked after
by Yudhi, Eka and David
for the 3 nights we visited and
we were never left thirsty!
On the ‘MSC For me’ app,
you can see daily activities,
special offers and a map of the
ship, which does come in very
handy at times! There is also
a great feature which allows
you to message friends and
family. A very handy feature
for when the boat is at sea,
meaning data roaming is not
available. Wifi packages are
available, but at €39.90 a day,
I decided to give it a miss! I
can catch up with everything
when the boat is docked so I
didn’t miss it too much.
The casino is suitable for
smokers, which is handy as
the wind is cutting outside
poolside. However, half is
non-smoking so there’s something
for everyone. We saw
a Cirque de Soleil show in
the Carousel Lounge, which
was located at the back of
the casino. We took the €15
option of Cocktail and Show.
The options were two premade
cocktails, and one nonalcoholic
one. The show was
great, something different
and in my opinion a bit of
an escape!
Located on the 15th deck
is the ‘marketplace,’ the buffet
restaurant, which is open
20 hours a day. It starts at
6.30am, serving breakfast.
The choice is vast, with both
continental and English
breakfasts on offer, and everything
in between from
pancakes and omelettes to
kippers and herrings. You are
absolutely unlimited in what
you choose and how much of
it you have. Tea, coffee, waters
and juices are available
at dispensers.
If you have the premium
drinks plan, you can use the
buzzer at the table and have
a drink brought to you – fruit
juice and cappucinos or something
stronger. The place
is always bustling, and the
queuing system may not have
a whole lot of structure, but
be assured the food will not
run out! Staff members are
incredibly attentive, and are
always serving, clearing, or
cleaning.
At lunchtime, the
buffet changes, and
there is a cheese
station, an ethnic
station, a salad bar,
and much more.
One day when we
were there, there
was a huge turkey
being cut, and
slices being served.
You’ll never go
hungry here. Also,
there are stations
at each entrance
and exit for hand
sanitizers, which
I appreciated.
Our cabin was
situated on the
14th deck. A compact
room, but it optimised
all of the space. The bed was
the star of the show – so big
and so comfortable! We met
the room attendant a couple
of times. Our rooms were al-
All in all, I had an amazing time on the Bellissima. I came home with memories
opinion, totally worth it. The photographers are very good at what they do. We
RIYADH CAR SHOW AUCTION...
...HAILED A GREAT SUCCESS FOR SILVERSTONE
AUCTIONS’ FIRST MIDDLE EASTERN SALE
Pagani Zonda Riviera steals the show selling for a world
record auction price of $5,885,000. Hypercars and
Supercars generate $16,000,000 worth of sales
Silverstone Auctions sells its highest value car ever and
ends 2019 season on a high
THE Riyadh Car Show Auction held on the 22nd November
and hosted by Silverstone Auctions in partnership
with Seven Concours was hailed a great success as a
catalogue of the most expensive hypercars and supercars
were auctioned under the setting sun.
As part of the Riyadh Season, the Riyadh Car Show Auction
was full of exotica, in fact, an unprecedented selection
of the worlds fastest and most expensive cars, some of which
were bespoke orders or from limited production runs.
The star lot and one that was being watched by many, Lot
121 the 2017 Pagani Zonda Riviera, achieved $5,885,000 and
went on to be the most expensive car sold at the auction and
also the most expensive ever for Silverstone Auctions. As the
hammer fell there was a huge cheer and applause throughout
the saleroom and many faces telling the story of a fantastic
lot achieving a quite incredible price. This Zonda is a very
special car, based on the Zonda F, Pagani offered the owner
the opportunity to create this one-off special which include
upgraded carbon panels, carbon-black wheels and bespoke
interior finished in blue. With 900km on the clock, this is
quite a car for one very lucky new owner.
Nick Whale Silverstone Auctions’ Managing Director commented:
“It was a wonderful experience for Silverstone Auctions
and an honour to be the first auction house to hold a
hypercar, supercar and classic car auction in Saudi Arabia.”
“The Pagani Zonda Riviera certainly stole the show and attracted
lots of interest. To achieve this figure and set a world
record auction price for a Zonda is quite astounding.”
Just some of the other cars that did very well were, Lot
108, a very low mileage 2015 Mclaren P1 in Volcano Yellow
achieving $1,123,500 and Lot 141, the 2017 Ferrari F12tdf,
produced as part of Ferraris Tailor-Made programme finished
in triple layer special order Blu Elettrico. Internally
there are many bespoke features which really make this
car stand-out. A beautiful car and very striking helping it to
achieve $909,500.
Some other notable sales were the 1978 Rolls Royce Corniche
2 Door Saloon one of 310 built between 1977 and 1980.
Finished in Seychelles Blue with the black Everflex roof, this
lovely car has been fully restored and we believe, according
to recent auction prices, this sold for a world record price of
$96,300 (£71,500).
Lot 142 the 1995 Porsche 911 (993) Turbo finished in the
classic Guards Red with 7,975 miles sold for $246,100 and
Lot 158 a remarkable example of a 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR
Brabus Roadster achieved $278,200.
With plenty of bidding both in the room, via the phone,
commission bids and online, this auction was being watched
with great interest around the world.
Nick continued: “We were made very welcome by the Saudis
and it was a pleasure to host this auction with Seven
Concours. We would certainly like to come back next year
and do it all again.”
DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to
uncover a hidden quote. A blackand-white
crossword-style grid is set
up for each quote, with a number of
letters “hovering” above each column.
Your task is to “drop” each of those
letters into the appropriate square in
each column, until the entire quote is
revealed. All punctuation (commas,
periods, dashes, etc.) has been
removed. Good luck!
today saw the players in a regular
single stableford competition.
The Oliva Nova course was looking to
be in good condition and the players they
were looking forward to going out to enjoy
the warming winter weather after the
last few cold days in this part of the Costa’s.
The wind did pick up somewhat later
on and got a little gusty but not enough
to spoil the players’ game, well some of
them anyway.
When the game was over, the cards
handed in and before the banter around
the tables got too loud, the following winners
were announced,
In first place was Capt Peter Gardiner
with 39 points off a 22 handicap.
That handicap will drop a bit by the next
game!. 2nd place went to Allan McManus
with 32 points off a 26 handicap. In 3rd
place was Clark Bowie with 31 points
off a 31 handicap. Nice to see Clark back
in the winner’s circle after a wee bit of
an absence.
NTP on hole # 3 was that man Clark
Bowie again, once he get’s going there’s
no stopping him, while Alan Tissington
won it on hole # 5 in two shots. Denis
McVeigh picked up the prize for hole 16
and there were no 2’s recorded today.
Today’s tale: For those who know the
course, Hole 14 is a par 5 and is a fairly
straight hole. When you get to the green
you have to park your equipment off to
the left and walk the remaining 20-25
meters or so to the green. Today one of
our guests ( right handed ) had a short
chip left just to get onto the green. This
carried out the player walked onto the
green then realized that their putter
had been left in the bag. The player then
asked to borrow a putter from one of the
other players, Denis McVeigh who is lefthanded.
Standing over the put, the player
could not understand to the great amusement
of the other players why the putter
face was facing the wrong way. When the
laughter died down the hole was finish it
was agreed that being a guest, no penalty
was recorded. That’s what it is all about,
having fun.
The Marina Alta Golf Society is a
small but friendly group of players who
play every Monday at the Oliva Nova
course with first Tee time being about
10.40. If you want to join this friendly
group of golfers as a guest then a warm
welcome will be waiting for you. Anyone
interested please contact Denis McVeigh
at mcveigh1@hotmail.com or call tel
638401170 or Alan Tissington at alantissington@gmail.com
or call tel 656831893.
Pego Golf
PEGO Golf Society Team Accumulator
played at Oliva Nova Golf Course
on Tuesday 26th of November 2019.
On a simply beautiful morning, with
not a cloud on the horizon, 49 players
assembled for FUN Team Accumulator
this morning. We welcomed three
guests for the day, and they were Phil
Woolmington, Liz Butler and Barry
Butler.
The course was in mediocre condition,
and I fail to see, how they can
have this course in tip top condition for
the pending four days of Professional
Golf. There is so much to do, with so
little time, and really there is not much
growth in December. In the big tournament
today, we had 110 balls in the water,
and that number was guessed by
Michel Grin who pocketed the whole
kitty, so well done Michel. There was
one two today and that was by Martin
Gates, and nearest the hole at hole 5
was Stella Fox with 1.13 meters, and
at Hole 16 it was a welcome back for
Penny Barden, who was closest at
4.05 meters
In the main event
The winners with 123 Points was
Peter Hanks, John Snelling, Peter
Cornes and A Ghost
Second Place with 116 Points was
Nigel Siddall, Brian Baybutt, Roger
Miller and Mick Farmer
Third Place with 116 Points was
Tricia Chapman, Donna Green, Bill
Pike and Danny Herron.
Fourth Place with 111 Points was
Peter Chapman, Alan Barwick, Carla
Chaz and Mr Ghost
IN the big Match Play Final Paul
Sankey beat Brian Barden by 1 Hole,
and in the Plate final Martin Gates
beat Simon Fox by 2 & 1
Next Tuesday we have the very last
Stableford of the year, and if you would
like to play with Pego, please send an
email to contact Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com,
and we would
love to see you.
ENRIQUE SLAMS CARETAKER
SPAIN’S returning manager Luis Enrique
says his predecessor Robert Moreno was
“disloyal” and will not be part of his coaching
team.
Enrique resigned from the role in June
to spend more time with his nine-year-old
daughter Xana, who died from bone cancer
in August.
Moreno succeeded him but told Enrique he
wanted to be in charge at Euro 2020 before returning
to assistant manager.
Moreno left the role after Spain’s 5-0 win
over Romania on 18 November.
“The only person responsible for Robert
Moreno not being in my coaching staff is me,”
Enrique said on Wednesday, when he was officially
unveiled as Spain´s boss.
“He came to see me in my house and told
me he wanted to lead the team at Euro 2020
and afterwards he would be happy to be my
assistant coach again.
“I understand that he has worked very hard
to be the coach and that he is ambitious – but
for me that is disloyal. I would never do something
like that and I don’t want someone with
those characteristics in my staff.”
“Ambition is to be encouraged but excessive
ambition is a defect, not a virtue.”
FELIX STRIKES GOLD
ATLETICO Madrid forward Joao Felix
has won the Golden Boy award for the
best under-21 player in Europe.
The 20-year-old Portugal international
scored 18 goals for Benfica last season before
a 126 million euro move to Atletico in
the summer.
He has scored two goals in 10 La Liga
appearances for Atletico so far this season.
“I am very proud,” said Felix. “It is the
second time that a player from Atletico Madrid
has won this award and I am happy.”
The Golden Boy award was created by
Italian newspaper Tuttosport in 2003 to
recognise the best young player in Europe.
Nominees must be under the age of 21
and play in a European nation’s top tier,
with Wayne Rooney and Raheem Sterling
being previous English winners of
the award.
WEEK 13
WITH the last International
break over for the year, we
now have a long run of Premier
League fixtures ‘till
next March, which means
business as usual for the
Alfaz Fantasy Football
League.
The good result of the
break was that England and
Wales both qualified for next
Summers Euros and, with
a little luck, the two Irish
teams and Scotland will get
there through the Play-Offs.
The rest must have done
all the teams good as the
nine Premier League games
gave the A.F.F.L. 31 goals,
three clean sheets, 36 yellow
cards and one red one,
which was Bournemouth’s
Simon Francis, who was
dismissed by referee Simon
Hooper after receiving two
yellow cards.
Chris’s team Promotion
Again retained their place at
the top of the A.F.F.L. for the
second week running, as they
opened up a gap over second
placed Martin’s Marauders to
a comfortable 24 points.
The four teams behind the
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
top team are all bunched up
with only three points separating
Martin’s Marauders,
Wade’s Alli Barber, Kapur’s
Napali Eleven and Bill’s
East Fifers.
Down at the other end of
the table, Lyn’s Handbrake
City moved a little closer to
Gil’s Kippax. Now only three
points are between them.
There is no change in the
top three places in our Junior
League, where Luca’s Lucky
Red F.C. lead the table with
a 32 point advantage over
Harley’s Ginger Ninjar.
Olly’s 11 continue to track
the leaders in third place.
Down at the foot of the
table, Romeo’s team My Dad
Supports Liverpool had a
good week scoring 23 points,
but it still wasn’t enough
to get them off the bottom
spot as they still have a long
way to go to catch the nearest
team, which is Bez Boys,
who are 49 points ahead.
In our Mark Carter Ladies
Section, Annette’s team
Hairnette are still in charge
at the top, with a slight six
point lead over former frontrunners
Isobel’s team The
Bluebells.
Pauline’s Vodka Army
are still camped out in
third place.
No change at the bottom
with the situation the same
as the Main League, Handbrake
City trailing Gil’s
Kippax by three points.
It was a good week for our
Across the Costa’s Golden
Boot League, with the average
score reaching almost 12
points.
Chris’s Promotion Again
have a fragile one point advantage
over Martin’s Marauders
at the summit.
Bill’s East Fifers are in
third place, followed by Grahem’s
Laurel & Vardy.
The top player in this section
is Leicester City’s super
striker Jamie Vardy, who has
so far clocked up 60 points in
this Section, which is four
more than Liverpool’s Mane.
Needless to say the top
three teams have all got this
quicksilver marksman in
their line-ups.
There is not much going
on at the bottom of the
table, with Terry’s Could
it be this Year still trailing
Mark’s team Inter Rubber
by five points.
The situation at the top
of our Champion of Champions
League is really hotting
up, as Wade’s Alli Barber
have moved to within
one point of the leaders,
Martin’s Marauders.
It will be interesting to see
what happens in the next
few weeks with both teams
having six different strikers.
Alli Barber with Jimenez,
Kane and Mousset, while
the Marauders have Vardy,
Abraham and Rashford.
Only Abraham didn’t score
at the weekend out of the six.
Down in the basement,
Gil’s Kippax are aiming for
a second Wooden Spoon as
they are trailing Luna’s Liver
Bird by 15 points.
Two more teams go into
our Monthly Wine Draw
and they are the top scoring
team, which was Wade’s Alli
Barber who notched up 48
points and our lowest scoring
team, which was Gil’s
Kippax with a lowly score of
three points.
Manager of the month for
November is being kindly
sponsored by Nikki and Gary
at the Drunken Duck, in Alfaz,
who serve up an excellent
English Breakfast as well as
a Super Sunday Lunch.
With one week to go, Alli
Barber are in the driving
seat with a four point gap
over Promotion Again.
Eric’s Peaky Blinders and
Bill’s East Fifers are both
within striking distance of
winning this super meal for
two at the Drunken Duck.
The second round of our
K.O. Cup Competition takes
place this weekend with recent
favourites Kapur’s Napali
Eleven taking on Nigel’s
Yellow Army.
The lowest ranked team,
Jenny’s Madam Tree (209th),
have a tough tie against one
of our top Junior teams, Olly
11, while the new favourites,
Promotion Again, take on
Dave’s Patangyangkippersang
(101st).
The inform team Alli Barber
have a tough task to
see off our top Junior Team
Lucky Red F.C.
If any of the ties finish level,
the replays will take place
the following week.
TOP OF THE WORLD
by Alex Trelinski
RAFAEL Nadal clinched an emotional
Davis Cup victory for Spain over Canada
when he beat Denis Shapovalov in front
of a jubilant home crowd in Madrid.
His 6-3 7-6 (9-7) win sealed the title on
Sunday, with Roberto Bautista Agut returning
to the team three days after his father’s
death to put the hosts 1-0 up.
Bautista Agut was in tears after beating
19-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (7-3)
6-3 in the opener.
Nadal’s win gave Spain an unassailable
2-0 lead and a sixth Davis Cup title.
The world number one won all eight of his
rubbers over the tournament to help Spain to
a first title since 2011 and ensure local fans
were celebrating at the end of the inaugural
edition of the competition’s revamped version,
which saw the home team beat Great
Britain in an exciting semi-final tussle the
day before.
“An amazing week, a lot of things we
went through – the father of Roberto passed
away... a lot of things happened,” Nadal said.
“I could not be happier. It has been an
unforgettable moment in this amazing stadium;
we can’t thank the crowd enough. Our
team spirit prevails.”
RAHM’S MASSIVE DAY
SPAIN´S Jon Rahm birdied the final hole
to win the DP World Tour Championship
in Dubai on Sunday and to clinch the
European Tour’s season-long Race to
Dubai title.
Rahm holed a three-foot putt to finish
one ahead of England’s Tommy Fleetwood
and win the event for the second time.
The win also meant the 25-year-old
Spaniard also pipped Fleetwood, 28, to be
the number one in Europe for 2019.
Rahm becomes the second Spaniard to
achieve the feat after the late Seve Ballesteros,
who won it six times.
“Seve was such an idol for us,” said
Rahm. “To put my name there, it’s hard to
believe. I can’t believe some of the things I
have accomplished.”
It was his fourth win of 2019 and his
second in a row, having won the Open
de Espana in his last tournament seven
weeks ago.
The victory also takes him up to third
in the world ranking behind number one
Brooks Koepka of the United States and
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, and he
also secured the biggest winning cheque in
tournament golf of over 2.5 million euros
and a further 2 million euros for winning
the Race to Dubai.
EURO 2020 DRAW WEEKEND
by Alex Trelinski
the Euro 2020 finals draw
is held in Bucharest, Romania
starting at 6.00pm(live
on BBC 2).
England and Spain are
among the six top seeds along
with Belgium, Italy, Germany,
and the Ukraine, but irrespective
of the seeding, plenty of
tough matches are likely to
face all of them next summer.
The other qualified countries
besides Wales are Austria,
Croatia, the Czech Republic,
Denmark, Finland,
France, the Netherlands, Poland,
Portugal, Russia, Sweden,
Switzerland, and Turkey.
Euro 2020 takes place from
June 12th to July 12th and
will be held in 12 host cities
across the continent.
The opening match will
be at the Stadio Olimpico in
Rome, Italy, and the final will
be at Wembley Stadium.
While the main tournament
draw will be held tomorrow,
we won’t know the confirmed
line-up until after the playoffs
in March. Scotland and
Northern Ireland have qualified
for the play-offs and will
need to progress through
the play-off path semi-final
and final to reach next summer’s
tournament.
Should Scotland beat Israel
in the play-off semi-finals,
then Norway or Serbia in
the path C final, they would
join England in group D at
Euro 2020. If Northern Ireland
and the Republic of Ireland
both win their path B
semi-finals – against Bosnia
& Herzegovina and Slovakia
respectively – the Irish rivals
would face each other in Belfast
for a place at next summer’s
championships.
