The work was premiered in Carnegie Hall as part of the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and is a wonderful example of the composer’s use of sumptuous string textures and modal tonalities. 10 minutes ed. by Stephen Gregson Five Variants of ‘Dives and Lazarus’ Concert band Score 9780193865297 Parts 9780193865303 Available from Emerson Wind Music arr. Having been premiered in the year of its composition at the Proms in London, the work was substantially revised in 1914 into its current form. From a captivatingly soft opening, the music slowly builds to an expansive and emotive climax, before the tone changes entirely to one of animation and vigour in the faster central section. This soon gives way, however, to a return of the softer material of the opening, with the piece ending as quietly and mesmerizingly as it began. *Available from Emerson Wind Music 10 minutes arr.
