list to get the Best Motorbuys magazine
out in the public even more. Although we
have always been associated with a spring

the magazine into new businesses that have
never used before. “We have looked at our
distribution recently and found that although
we cover some businesses, takeaways, cafes
and medical centres, there was a lot that we
were not getting into. We then investigated
it further and found there was a lot more
we could be distributing to so we went out
and did” says Account rep. for the magazine

to go out and about and look at our current
sites and see if they needed new stands or
relocation of stands to enhance their appeal.

the Best Motorbuys magazine”! They also have
Facebook and Instagram highlighting different
stories, pictures and videos of vehicles and
vehicle related happenings in the region.
Best Motorbuys magazine is still the only
free car dealership magazine in Canterbury
and for the wider South Island as well.

“Trade me & the internet in general has
meant it is not a click of the button away
from buying a vehicle” quotes Mathew. “But
that does not mean that this magazine is
irrelevant. Just means we have to be more
creative and inventive on how we distribute,
make up and promote the magazine.” “Trade
me is definitely the main one that brings
them in on a regular basis” says Devin Inch
from Inch Quality European on Ferry road.
“Every dealer has to be on Trade me these
days” Devin states. But as some dealers have
found – the magazine might not be carried
into the yards anymore it does help a lot of
new buyers become aware of what is out
in the market place. “I recently put a friend
on to the magazine as she was looking for a
SUV. I asked her what kind of SUV and she
had no idea. The magazine is good for that
as looking at pics on the internet is not quite
the same as in person, nor is it the same or
as good as looking at them in a magazine,
thankfully” says Mathew. We also now have
a portal in Drive South to list a lot of the
vehicles you see in Best Motorbuys online. So
not only are we in print but also online. Which
is a great added bonus for buyers and sellers
a like!” Being a free weekly publication means
it is still the only hot lead for car dealers in
Canterbury to push their product. Thankfully
for the buyers they still have this available
to them. “Best Motorbuys has been around
for a while now. With anything that has been
around for a long time you roll with the
punches. And while car yards, fashion, fads
and trends have come and gone we are still

You will need to take extra care
when travelling in holiday periods
because of increased traffic volumes,
congestion, tiredness and people
driving in unfamiliar environments.
Being courteous, remembering to share
the road with others and scheduling
frequent breaks can help you keep your
cool when driving during these times.
Follow these tips to ensure your travel
is a safe and pleasurable experience for
you and others on the road.
Why you need to be alert
• There are more vehicles on the road
– more vehicles means a higher risk of
crashes.
• Many people are driving on unfamiliar
roads.
• People are driving long hours and
getting fatigued – often early morning
or late evening.
• Increased stress from factors such as
heat, traffic jams, noisy children and
general tiredness.
• People on holiday may be less vigilant
about road safety, eg speeding, driving
when tired, not buckling up.
• There’s more drink-driving during
holiday periods.
What you can do to increase
your safety?
You can make a number of choices to
increase your safety on your holiday
journey. You need to give road use the
attention and respect it deserves.
plan ahead
• Take a little time to make sure that
you and your vehicle are safe before
starting your journey.
• Plan your travel to avoid the worst
peak traffic periods when many
highways become congested.
• Allow plenty of time – make the
journey part of the holiday.
• Schedule regular rest stops.
Be alert to changes
Often during holiday periods, passing
lanes are closed to help reduce
congestion and prevent further delays
where the traffic merges at the end of
lanes. Sometimes alternative routes
are suggested. Check our information
on highway conditions for real-time
updates about route changes, delays,
closures and incidents.
Drive to the conditions
‘Conditions’ doesn’t just mean the
weather. It also includes:
• the road you’re on
• the traffic conditions
• the speed (the speed limit and a ‘safe
speed’ may differ)
• you, for example are you tired or on
medication that affects your driving
• your vehicle and load.
Watch out for fatigue
Long trips are tiring and fatigue can
be deadly when you’re driving. Driver
fatigue was a factor in 54 road deaths
and nearly 1000 injuries last year. Plan
to get enough rest beforehand so that
you drive fresh. You should plan in
advance where you’ll take breaks on
your trip.
Before you travel
• Have your vehicle checked. Most
garages offer safety checks for tyre
tread and pressure, lights, brakes,
cooling systems and other components.
(A well-tuned vehicle is also more fuel
efficient, so you’ll also save money on
fuel costs. Check that your warrant of
fitness and vehicle licence are up to
date.
• Check that you have a current driver
licence. If it’s expired or close to expiry,
you’ll need to renew it before starting
your journey. When buying or hiring
a vehicle, always choose the safest
vehicle you can afford. When packing
your vehicle, make sure everything is
securely stowed. Even small objects can
become dangerous missiles in the event
of a sudden stop or crash.

Check all towing attachments and make

Also remember to check the safety
chain, trailer lights, tyres and brakes.
Remember, if you’re towing a trailer,
your maximum speed limit on the open
road is 90km/h. Keep left and pull over

Load heavy objects evenly over all of
the axles.
Keep your cool
Holiday driving can be frustrating with
busy roads, often slower sightseeing
travellers, stifling heat in summer and
icy surfaces in winter. Here are some
simple and easy ways to stay calm and
stay in control:
• Be courteous – let others merge into
traffic and indicate before turning or
changing lanes.
• Keep left unless passing.
• If you’re a slower driver, pull over
when you can to let others pass.
• Be patient and don’t be provoked by
other drivers’ aggressive behaviour.
• Remember that trucks and towing
vehicles have lower speed limits. Wait
for a passing lane or until you can see
clear road ahead of you and enough
space to overtake safely.
• Keep an eye out for cyclists and other
road users. Give them plenty of space.
• Watch out for horses on back country
roads.

Don’t let your family holiday be marred
by tragedy simply because someone
didn’t buckle up. If you’re the driver, you
are legally responsible for making sure
all passengers under the age of 15 are
securely restrained with either a safety
belt or child restraint. Children under
seven must be properly restrained by

Toyota RAV4 Adventure
While Toyota’s new RAV4 stands
out for its family-friendly profile,
there’s no doubt Toyota want
the latest generation model to appeal to a
wider audience.
Included in the eight-model line-up is a
one-specification four-wheel-drive version
labelled Adventure. It is the hero car in the
line-up and such is its popularity there may
be a wait while stocks land in good supply.
There’s not a lot mechanically different
to the standard RAV4, however, the
Adventure gets a body kit and interior
treatment that makes it stand out markedly
from the rest of the range. If you like
bold and brash it is the car for you, large
fenders, aggressive bumper and grille, and
big wheels are there to tempt. Inside, there
is also bright orange detailing.
It is also a high-grade model, most of
what is found in Limited specification is
fitted to the Adventure and, as you might
expect Adventure rounds out the series at
$48,990. Bear in mind the RAV4 starts at
$34,990, and includes hybrid models which
land from $38,990.
The Adventure is in the line-up as a point
of difference, and after a week in the car I
can certainly see its appeal. When I tested
the hybrid model in these columns in July
I suggested it was the sport utility vehicle
for me, and that hasn’t changed. However,
I would be tempted with the Adventure, it
looks a little bit rugged and it has appeal in
that way.
As I’ve covered in the past, the new RAV4
is all-new, the platform is fresh and the
body style quite a departure from the
previous generation.
That being the case, it is state-of-theart
mechanically and that shows when
you are driving it, not so much in terms
of mechanical power but it handles a lot
differently, it is more stable and for lack of
better words, more normal, more car-like
from behind the wheel.
Yet, the Adventure has off-road ability.
The downside of evaluating a four-wheeldrive
vehicle off-the-seal in spring is that it
gets very dirty, so I didn’t tackle anything
too serious, but I did use an old forestry
track near Hororata which is a good test of
suspension control. The ground was very
soft thanks to a drenching a day or two
before, however, the RAV4 never felt as if I
was going to end up with a complete loss
of traction.
That’s due a lot to the engine and dynamic
torque vectoring drive management
protocols which can be dialled in by the
driver. There’s a console-mounted button
which selects the choice of several modes
– snow, mud, sand, dirt, rock. There are also
protocols for highway driving, eco, normal
or sport.
Each has its own unique character with
the end result being the best outcome
depending on the surface. Take into
account too, that the wheels and rubber
are up an inch from the standard models,
the big Yokohama tyres (235/55 x 19in) are
street-treaded but they do dig out grip on
soft surfaces.
The non-hybrid RAV4 buyer effectively has
a choice of two engines, 2-litre or 2.5-litre.
The Adventure has the big displacement
unit and it is an easy-worker. The benefit of
cubic capacity is the lack of obvious stress,
the 2487cc twin-camshaft engine just lopes
along and works freely through a six-speed
automatic transmission. The big benefit
of that is the lack of fuel it uses, there is
little loading so Toyota’s claim of 6.8-litres
per 100km (42mpg) usage on a combined
cycle is not unachievable.
My time with the test car returned figures
of 8.2l/100km (35mpg) with a 6l/100km
(47mpg) instantaneous figure available at

just 1600rpm.
If lively acceleration is needed, the engine
will burst into life with strong mid-range
performance – standstill to 100km/h in
8.5sec and 80km/h to 120km/h in 5.4sec.
The latter relates directly to engine power,
Toyota claim outputs of 152kW and 243Nm,
both outputs arriving tall inthe rev band
at 6600rpm and 4500rpm respectively,
that matters little, the specific outputs are
strong enough to provide that direct flow
of power right across the rev range.
On my highway evaluation I was passed
by a RAV4 of an earlier generation. The
vehicle was four-up and on the roof rails
sat several sets of skis. I figured Mt Hutt
was the destination, and I couldn’t help but
think how suited to that road the RAV4
was.
I strongly suspect the occupants were a
little envious they weren’t driving the latest
generation model, especially the Adventure
model. Its name lends itself to a role just
that little left-of-centre, yet it still is the
quintessential RAV4 that Kiwi buyers have
come to embrace.
