last Friday before Christmas, the issue has
been a popular one with both car buyers and
sellers a like! And this year it is again going
to be bigger and better in so many new
ways! Read on to find out more for what is in
store in this year’s issue.
This year for the first time Best Motorbuys
Christmas issue is going to go to new
locations, further locations and holiday
locations! That way, no matter where you go
you can easily pick one up. With the last year
of the calendar year being on the Friday
20th of December and the next issue not
coming out again until the 10th of January
2020, the Christmas issue has always
had more pages in it to cover this holiday
period. Not only do we have the extra
pages covered this holiday period but also
the locations. New cafes, service stations,
medical centres, takeaways and fish and chip
shops have been added to the distribution
list to get the Best Motorbuys magazine
out in the public even more. Although we
have always been associated with a spring
roll and red bull from the local diary or a
scoop, 2 fish and a hot dog from your local
fish and chip shop. We are now dropping
the magazine into new businesses that have
never used before. “We have looked at our
distribution recently and found that although
we cover some businesses, takeaways, cafes
and medical centres, there was a lot that we
were not getting into. We then investigated
it further and found there was a lot more
we could be distributing to so we went out
and did” says Account rep. for the magazine
Mathew Stephens. “We also hired students
to go out and about and look at our current
sites and see if they needed new stands or
relocation of stands to enhance their appeal.

seeing your stand is run down and beat up.

magazine from. By doing this - not only are
we doing our advertisers the duty that they
deserve by fulfilling our end of getting the
magazine out there. But we are enhancing
the appeal of the magazine to make it a
destination and habit rather than an effort
and create a following with our readers!”
Further locations have also been added;
magazines will be delivered to holiday hot
spots like Marahau in the Abel Tasman park,
Motueka, Stoke, Keiteriteri, Lake Brunner,
Blenheim, Twizel, Lake Benmore region,
Wanaka, Queenstown, Methven, Tekapo,
Mt. Cook and Akarora. With Christchurch
certainly being the largest city in the South
Island it makes sense to get the opportunity
of what the city’s car dealerships can
offer out there to the wider South Island
community. “People do travel to buy vehicles.
We have seen this in the last week with the
People of Timaru travelling north to buy
vehicles after the hail storm hit their city.
Causing so much damage that not only their
vehicles have to be written off but so do a lot
the car dealerships vehicles in Timaru. And
hour travel might be a bit too much for most
Urban Cantabrians but for those in Ohoka,
Hamner, Methven, Darfield, Temuka – that is
part of their daily lives to drive somewhere to
get something” says Mathew. “Dealerships in
Christchurch know this too and have always

Mathew. Delivering the Best Motorbuys

great achievement that we will deliver this
year. Relying on the Allied Press network it
will be a task to get them out but after so
many years in business Allied Press is not to
concern about delivering on their promise

There is also a lot more content in the
magazine in ever before. With more focus
on vehicle leisure related stories, stories
that highlight or feature certain automotive
industries and specifics relating to vehicle.
Also stories that focus on good 4WD tracks in
the region, old school car adverts that looks
back on car yards from the 70s, 80s, 90s
and 2000s. To more pieces on best road trip
songs, car reviews, tips and tricks on how to
look after and maintain your vehicles and best
places to go to turn your machine into a mean
machine! “With Drive South coming on board,
we now have a lot more stories archived to
access. And as a result you will see a lot more
content in the magazine to entice you in even
if you are not looking to buy a vehicle” Says
Mathew. “To be a magazine that is read every
week if you are or if you are not buying the
vehicle is a great stand point to aim for with
the Best Motorbuys magazine”! They also have
Facebook and Instagram highlighting different
stories, pictures and videos of vehicles and
vehicle related happenings in the region.
Best Motorbuys magazine is still the only
free car dealership magazine in Canterbury
and for the wider South Island as well.
Long of the days where there was Bull, Sell
& Exchange, Car dealer and an extensive
listings of vehicles in the Star and The Press.
“Trade me & the internet in general has
meant it is not a click of the button away
from buying a vehicle” quotes Mathew. “But
that does not mean that this magazine is
irrelevant. Just means we have to be more
creative and inventive on how we distribute,
make up and promote the magazine.” “Trade
me is definitely the main one that brings
them in on a regular basis” says Devin Inch
from Inch Quality European on Ferry road.
“Every dealer has to be on Trade me these
days” Devin states. But as some dealers have
found – the magazine might not be carried
into the yards anymore it does help a lot of
new buyers become aware of what is out
in the market place. “I recently put a friend
on to the magazine as she was looking for a
SUV. I asked her what kind of SUV and she
had no idea. The magazine is good for that
as looking at pics on the internet is not quite
the same as in person, nor is it the same or
as good as looking at them in a magazine,
thankfully” says Mathew. We also now have
a portal in Drive South to list a lot of the
vehicles you see in Best Motorbuys online. So
not only are we in print but also online. Which
is a great added bonus for buyers and sellers
a like!” Being a free weekly publication means
it is still the only hot lead for car dealers in
Canterbury to push their product. Thankfully
for the buyers they still have this available
to them. “Best Motorbuys has been around
for a while now. With anything that has been
around for a long time you roll with the
punches. And while car yards, fashion, fads
and trends have come and gone we are still
around. Still offering great service”!
Originally Best Motorbuys came into the
market to compete against the green
magazine that was Car dealer. This was in
the early 2000s. ACP at the time had both
the Car Dealer magazine and Bull, Sell &
exchange before selling them off forming the
Best Motorbuys as we know today in 2007;
forming one giant magazine that was the red
magazine in 2008. Or as we know it now The
Best Motorbuys. Best Motorbuys is Part of
the Star Media group here in Christchurch.
Where Best Motorbuys magazine sits
alongside other magazines in the Star Media
family like Style, Kiwi Gardener, Rugby
News, With this ring and the Home and
Leisure magazine. These magazines form the
nucleus of a larger group alongside the Star
(Which now has the highest readership in
Christchurch Metropolitan area). Which also
has a larger group of Community papers
which include the Selwyn Times, Western
News, Nor’ West news, Pegasus Post, Bay
Harbour news and Southern View. Although
a lot of second car dealerships do not
advertise in a lot of newspapers these days.
A regular amount of new car dealerships do
pop up in the magazines and community
papers due to their reach!
