The display includes 932 trees, 150 lit features, more than 200 animals, and 7 pounds of snow in an old fashioned village decorated for the holidays. For information call 614- 836-3333. Groveport history films Two documentary films on the history of Groveport, produced by the Groveport Heritage Society and Midnet Media, are now available for viewing online on YouTube. The films are: “Groveport: A Town and Its People” and “The Story of John S. Rarey and Cruiser.” The films were originally made about 15 years ago. Shooting on anksgiving According to the Madison Township Police, on Nov. 28, around 7:03 p.m., officers from the Madison Township Police Department along with officers from the Groveport and Obetz police departments, as well as deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, responded to the report of a shooting at 4666 Harbor Boulevard. Madison Township Police Chief Gary York said that, upon arrival, Madison Township officers contacted the victim, Antwoin Ramsey, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the lower leg. Madison Township Officer Kranz applied a tourniquet and direct pressure to the victim’s leg until medics arrived, thus reducing the amount of blood loss. The victim was later transported to Mount Carmel East by Madison Township Medic 183. The suspect, Phillip Ferrell III, was arrested and charged with one count of felonious assault and transported to the Franklin County Jail. The case will be presented to the grand jury at a later date. A Day at the Museum Drop in to the Groveport Heritage Museum, 648 Main St., from 1-4 p.m. on Jan. 25 to learn about bygone forms of entertainment. Obetz Council vacancy The village of Obetz is accepting applications from qualified registered voters to fill the unexpired term created by the election of Obetz Village Councilmember Angie Kirk to mayor. The term expires on Dec. 31, 2021. Council meetings are the second and fourth Monday of every month unless there is a holiday and the meeting is moved to a Tuesday. There are occasional special meetings. Meetings typically last no more than two hours. A hard copy of the application, as well as a current resume and letter of interest, must be filed in person at the Government Center located at 4175 Alum Creek Drive. Applications must be placed in a sealed envelope labeled, “Application for Obetz Council.” Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Dec. 19. Visit obetz.oh.us to find an application. In those days fans packed the gym balcony and the areas along the sidelines. Those who played there said this gym was loud and intimidated opposing teams because it felt as though the fans were right on top of the action. The school and gym, built in 1923, were unique for their era as in those days gym floors were usually incorporated onto a school’s auditorium stage. At Groveport School the gym and auditorium were distinctly separate areas. The gym was home to both Cruiser boys and girls varsity basketball teams. The gym was used until a new gym was built and opened next door in what is now Middle School Central in 1952.
www.columbusmessenger.com December 15, 2019 - SOUTHEAST MESSENGER - PAGE 11 Pallos retires after 42 years with fire department He began his career in 1974 as a volunteer By Linda Dillman Staff Writer Chris Pallos’ more than 40-year career with the Madison Township Fire Department is coming to an end and the battalion chief was recently honored for his years of service. “After 42 years with the Madison Township Fire Department, Chief Pallos has decided to retire and start the next chapter in his life,” said Madison Township Fire Chief Derek Robinson, before telling Pallos the department is keeping his coffee cup for whenever he stops by the station. Madison Township trustee and fellow retired firefighter Ed Dildine said he and Pallos worked a lot together on 2 Unit. “He was a good officer and we spent a lot of time together,”said Dildine. He graduated from Groveport Madison High School in 1971 and started as a volunteer firefighter in October 1974. Three years later, he became a full time firefighter and was promoted to lieutenant in 1985. Five years later, he became captain and in 1993, he was promoted to battalion chief. Pallos oversaw the department’s hazardous foam operations from its inception in 1993 through 2015 and has attended numerous fire, EMS, hazardous materials classes and incident commands. Trash pick-up hiccup The removal of boxes and bags, colorful wrapping paper torn apart to get to the gift hidden inside and other holiday artifacts is on the mind of Madison Township Administrator Susan Brobst. “There was a little bit of a hiccup with the Thanksgiving trash collection,” said Brobst during the Madison Township trustees’ Dec. 10 meeting. “A lot of streets were picked up earlier (in the day) than normal.” On major holidays, including Christmas and New Year’s Day, trash collection is always pushed ahead one day. While Local Waste picked up trash the day after Thanksgiving as scheduled, some customers used to their regular pick-up time were caught off guard when drivers arrived earlier than expected. “You really need to get trash out the night before or at least by 6:30 a.m.,” said Brobst. According to the guidelines in the Local Waste Service contract for unincorporated Madison Township, if a holiday falls on or before a scheduled collection day, service is delayed one day that week only and should be out at the curb by 6:30 a.m. Township trash is collected on Thursday, so, on a holiday schedule, it will be picked up on Friday. The holiday schedule followed by the hauler is New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, service is not delayed.
