Young ballerina takes<br />
second place in exams<br />

FOURTEEN-year-old<br />
ballerina Riley Lyons knew<br />
she would be competing<br />
against dancers much<br />
older than herself at the<br />
New Zealand Association<br />
of Modern Dance annual<br />
examinations last month.<br />
But when she pirouetted<br />
her way into second place<br />
at the scholarship awards<br />
event in Wellington,<br />
against dancers up to year<br />
13, her surprise was an<br />
understatement.<br />
Riley, a year 9 student<br />
at St Andrew’s College<br />
said it felt “surprising but<br />
amazing” to not only be<br />
nominated for the scholarship<br />
prize but to take out<br />
second place.<br />
“I went to the awards<br />
hoping that I might be able<br />
to make the finals, but to<br />
come second was a huge<br />
shock,” she said.<br />
Gaining entry into the<br />
nationwide competition<br />
was not an easy feat as she<br />
had to gain the top ballet<br />
mark in her examinations<br />
and be personally<br />
nominated by an NZAMD<br />
examiner for the prize.<br />
Riley began her ballet<br />
journey when she was just<br />
four-years-old and splits<br />

her training between Garden<br />
City Dance Academy<br />
and St Andrew’s Ballet<br />
Academy, where she was<br />
nominated for the award.<br />
Subsequently, she was<br />
the only ballet dancer from<br />
Christchurch to attend the<br />
scholarship awards.<br />
She credited her success<br />
to the support from her<br />
family and teachers, hard<br />
work and countless hours<br />
of training. But Riley is<br />
determined to continue<br />
improving and broaden<br />
her knowledge of the dance<br />
world.<br />
“One of my main goals<br />
this year was to be reaccepted<br />
into the associates<br />
programme at the New<br />
Zealand School of Dance<br />
in Wellington for 2020,”<br />
she said.<br />
“Fortunately, I was<br />
accepted and I get to<br />
train intensively with<br />
world-class teachers. It’s<br />
an inspiring place and I’m<br />
very privileged to be a part<br />
of this elite programme.”<br />
