WESTERN FILMMAKER FALL & WINTER 2019 - 20
Alberta Film Commission
Government Guaranteed Grant on ALL
Alberta Production Spend
You can take our grant straight to the bank
because it is accepted at face value at most
financial institutions. This means they won’t discount
your loan based on what your tax credit
might work out to be. You know the amount you’ll
be getting from the start.
Alberta’s unique production incentive offers a
grant against ALL eligible production expenses
incurred in Alberta.
Alberta will contribute between 20% - 29 % of
ALL eligible expenses. This is equivalent to a
36% - 53% labour based tax credit. Alberta’s
level of contribution increases with Albertan
ownership and the employment of Albertan key
creative personnel.
If that wasn’t enough, Alberta is the only province
in Canada that doesn’t have a provincial sales
tax. This means you have more money to put on
screen.
Through your entire production, you will feel at home
thanks to quality accommodations, fine restaurants, and
thriving cultural communities.
Labour Market Opinion
Prior to arrival in Canada where work permits are required
for entry, productions are required to apply for a Labour
Market Opinion (LMO) from Human Resources and Social
Development Canada. A LMO is designed to take into
account career development and employment opportunities
for Canadians. A LMO must be obtained before a work
permit is issued. A copy of the application must be faxed
to the appropriate guild and union and the Alberta Film
Commission F:403.297.6168.
Work Permits
Non Canadian Residents working in Alberta are required
to have work permits. Work permits may be obtained at
any point of entry at a cost of $150 per person. Work permits
are not required for film and television producers.
Crew Rates
Alberta crew rates are competitive in both long and short
format. For more information please contact Alberta Film.
Provincial Funding
Many public and private funds are available in
Alberta to film producers.
Federal Funding
Many public and private funds are available in
Canada to film producers. The Guide published
annually by the Canadian Film and Television
Producers Association is an excellent source of
information. The AFDP can be used in conjunction
with the CFTPA incentives.
