Scott’s new ‘Shorty’ doctor<br />

Walker aroundMid Canterbury overthe<br />

festiveseason.<br />

College­educated Scott Smart playsDr<br />

Walker and he is hoping to visitparents<br />

Averil and Ross at thefamily farm.The<br />

long­runningtelevisionseries takesa<br />

breakfrom thescreen after tonight’s<br />

traditional Christmascliffhanger; it is<br />

New Zealand’s most­watched drama and<br />

has beenrunning for 27 years.<br />

Mr Smart,who also appearedon<br />

Shortland Streetasastudent adecade<br />

ago,said he waspackinguphis Sydney<br />

house to return to New Zealand.<br />

‘‘I would love to get backhometoMid<br />

Canterbury at some point overthe festive<br />

season. If not before Christmasthen<br />

hopefully early in the New Year to visit<br />

the family.<br />

‘‘I mostly remember thefreedomand<br />

the space of thefarm when Iwas growing<br />

up, andthe differentjobsthat come with<br />

eachseason ... lambing, roguing, harvest<br />

and all theusualthings.’’<br />

‘‘I was lucky enough to get back to do<br />

harvest earlierthisyear withmyparents.<br />

I’m not always abletobut Ilike being able<br />

to help out whenIcan.’’<br />

Mr Smart is alsohopingtovisitAkaroa,<br />

which he describes as oneofhis favourite<br />

placesinNew Zealand.<br />

‘‘I’m enjoying being back in New<br />

Zealand,withthe fresh air andwith<br />

naturesoclose to thecity, like Karekare<br />

and Piha, andbeingcloser to family.<br />

Aucklandisn’t necessarily home yet,but<br />

it’scertainly closertohomethan I’ve<br />

beeninawhile, whichisgreat.’’<br />

‘‘I’menjoying committing to Shortland<br />

Street and being busy as part of the family<br />

there. The writers andstory­liners do a<br />

greatjob of developing and connecting so<br />

many different charactersand stories,<br />

andI’m learning alot aboutTVstructure<br />

andwriting just from readingtheir<br />

scripts.’’<br />

Hisisenjoying playing Dr Walker.<br />

‘‘Ithink thewritershave doneagreat<br />

job with Marty.Ilikethathe’san<br />

outsider,and ahardworkerand keeps<br />

himself at adistance.He’sprivate,soalot<br />

of hisactionsare misread or<br />

misinterpreted by the other characters,<br />

whichIfind interesting, andmost of his<br />

conflict comes outofhis investmentinhis<br />

work and hiscarefor his patients, which<br />

is great to explore.’’<br />

Fans can expect to learn alot more<br />

aboutthe new doctor in the new year.<br />

Sandys is keeping the spirit<br />

of Christmas alive, decorating<br />

his house again with<br />

festive lights and decorations.<br />

His home, at 143 Hobbs<br />

Road in Methven, has been<br />

three­quarters covered with<br />

an extensive array of Christmas<br />

decorations.<br />

Last time hedecorated<br />

his house, it took five weeks<br />

to set up in non­ideal<br />

conditions, but this time,<br />

with better weather and<br />

better health, he has<br />

enjoyed doing it.<br />

Among his many decorations<br />

he has aspecial emergency<br />

services theme for<br />

people to see, which<br />

includes an inflatable fire<br />

truck.<br />

And he is expecting a<br />

special visitor inabig red<br />

suit to turn up, in the<br />

emergency services display,<br />

on Christmas Eve.<br />

Any donations left by<br />

Night market<br />

people will be given to the<br />

Methven Volunteer Fire<br />

Brigade for their restoration<br />

project on aSeries<br />

One Land Rover, similar to<br />

historical fire vehicles used<br />

by the brigade, which was<br />

donated by the Moore<br />

Family.<br />

Once up and running the<br />

Land Rover will be on<br />

display.<br />

Mr Sandys said the lights,<br />

which were lit up last night<br />

for the first time, will be<br />

best viewed from around<br />

9pm ­9.30pm until 12.30am<br />

each night through until<br />

Boxing Day (<strong>December</strong><br />

26).<br />

around <strong>Ashburton</strong> on Saturday,<br />

<strong>December</strong> 21. The<br />

bus will leave from the<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Farmer’s<br />

Market will host a<br />

night market in Tinwald<br />

on <strong>December</strong> 23.<br />
