Cat Crawford, owner of 502 Power Yoga, has built a community of self-development and mental health in Kentuckiana. Crawford became interested in yoga when she lived in California around 2006. “I was a runner at the time and had heard yoga was a good thing to incorporate into our fitness routine,” she said. “A coworker invited me to go with her once.” Eventually, she moved back to Louisville and tried to search for classes similar to those she had attended in California. “I didn’t find anything, which led me to dive into yoga as a whole,” she said. Crawford immediately recognized the physical benefits and then grew to understand all of the other bonuses accompanying the practice of yoga. “I carry a lot of anxiety and stress,” she said. “The physicality of the practice works to relieve that tension.” In 2011, she received her teacher’s certification at Yoga East. Crawford, an art major focused on graphic design and illustration, worked in marketing at a small business and began to get an inside look at what it takes to keep a business going. “I felt like I had yoga know-how and I had business know-how,” Crawford said. “I thought it’d be great to open something like what I had been to in LA.” She met someone with a like-mind, Sarah Smith, and they began working together. “I was 7 months pregnant and Sarah had a daughter that was 3 months old,” Crawford said. “Two new mommies equals one full person.” Smith had been introduced to a practice called Baptiste Power Vinyasa. This practice is a type of hot power yoga that focuses on poses, self-reflection and meditation. It is meant to be easily adaptable to any level of physical ability. “The room is heated to 90 degrees,” Crawford said. “It focuses on flow and linking movement to breath. It’s very rhythmic.” Crawford and Smith opened a location in the Highlands neighborhood in Louisville in February 2014.
