Residents in Ashburton, Chertsey, Fairton, Hinds, Hakatere, Lake Hood, Mayfield and Rakaia are currently on Level 1 water restrictions, while Methven and Mt Somers residents are on Level 2 restrictions. Linda Clarke Dog owners must wait for review By Linda Clarke Dog owners breaking local bylaws by running their pets off the leash at the Ashburton Business Estate can seek to have the area designated a dog exercise areawhen dog control bylaws are reviewed in 2021. Apetition signed by 139 ‘‘concerned dog lovers’’ was presented to the Ashburton District Council last year after asign was erected in the business estate reminding owners their dogs must be leashed. The existing bylaw says dogs must be leashed in all public places except areas designated dog exercise areas. There are nine inAshburton, but many dog owners make use of the undeveloped area at the business estate. The dog control bylaws, which set out the designated areas,were last reviewed in2016. Cr John Falloon supported their actions. ‘‘It will come upin frontofthe bylaw committee next year so it is not too long towait.’’ Ms Donaldson said the dog control bylaws applied to public places all over the district. ‘‘If it is on aroad, that is a public place, but running around a farm paddock is fine it is private.‘‘ She said council’s bylaws were not out of kilter with other local bodies and many had stricter controls on dogs. ‘‘When you see the results of dog attacks onchildren it makes you think twice about having lenient rules. We have had our share of dog attacks in this district.’’ Family harm needs to be called out Areas like Ashburton are not immune from the rising national trend of family violence, says White Ribbon ambassador and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. The MP asked PoliceMinister Stuart Nash for data onfamily harm investigations inhis electorate, whichisunderMid/South Canterbury police jurisdiction. Mr Falloon said the data showed an increase in family harm investigations, though that could be partly attributed to a special multiagency response to family violence programme running in Canterbury and one other police district since 2016. In 2018, Police in the Mid South area were called to1827 family harm investigations. In the six months from January to June last year, they were called to 1018 investigations. In2015, the number ofinvestigationswas 1387. Some 352 offenders were apprehended in 2018, while 162 were apprehended in the six month period last year. In2015, the number of offenders apprehended was 427.
