In need ofsome tender loving care, Mrs O’Sullivan dug out some quality, classical fabric bought in Ireland 20years previously and set about recovering the seat. The project was tackled atthe Methven Summer School and on the second day of a two day workshop hosted by upholstery professional Brendan Patrick. Mrs O’Sullivan said she had completed a dining chair reupholstery project quicker than expected, and with time onher hands, had discovered the piano stool inanearby room. ‘‘I have done upholstery courses beforeand reallyenjoy getting handson. ‘‘I love upcycling and recycling and I’m getting better at it.’’ Her dining chair project used material bought locally and recently,althoughshe bought the chair itself for five shillings in 1963. It wrapsuptomorrow after anotherbusy week of classes. Over the pastweek, some229 people have been enjoying adiverserangeofactivities, including cheese making, art,upholstery, photography, baking andcake decorating. Methven Summer School chairperson Sandy Redmond said the coursescould not be offered without the support of Mount Hutt College. Thecollege venueprovided arelaxed, friendly environmentthatwas put to good use eachyear earlyinthe new year. Mrs Redmond said20courses had beenoffered this year and excellent tutors hadhelpeddeliver new skillstothoseenrolled. ‘‘We get anumber of suggestionseach year for new courses,but we then needtofind tutorsto deliverthem. ‘‘Coursescan only go aheadifenough peoplesign up to them to make them financiallyviable.’’ Mrs Redmond saidthe summer school was not for profit, but about bringing thecommunity together. Originally it aimed to helppromote Methven in the summer andtoday’svisitors wereamix of locals and othersfrom outofthe district. The master carver’s twoday course helped and inspired four participants to create two sculptures each, including akoru carving. Turning stone into art, budding stone sculptors used hammers, mallets, chisels, hand saws and sand paper.

As well assoap, they also made lip balm,bath bombs, bath fizz and bath salts. The versatile material ofbee wax was melted in the microwave and poured into moulds with awick sticking up, then left to stand and harden for candles. It was also rolled to create long, thin candles and much smaller birthday cake candles. Soy wax was another mediumused andmixed with colour and fragrance to create another alternative. Introspective art journals Butchery skills passed on Award winning sausage maker Paddy Kennedy passed on some useful skillsand tips to aspiring butchers at atwo day workshop in Methven earlier this week. The master butcher showedhis knife skillsatthe Paddock to Plate workshop and demonstrated how to debone a chicken and how to cut halfalamb into professional cuts. Mr Kennedy, who is amemberofthe elite NZ Butchery Guild,also used products to create salamis and sausages, addingwell tried and testedspecial ingredients,including whisky. Methven based artist Cherie Irwin has helped seven women delve deeper into their creative side at an art journaling workshop held at the longrunning Methven Summer School. Art Journaling,says Mrs Irwin, is away to be deeply creative without ‘‘external expectations to ‘produce’ art that isgood enough to hangonthe wallortosell’’. It offered a private space, the freedom to discover creativity and to get ideas flowing. Art Journaling was about selfexpression and was ‘‘introspective’’. It was also ecofriendly compared to many other types of art practise andno real mistakes could be made, she said. Course participants practised a number of practical mixed media art techniques to create art journal pages, exploring primarily with acrylics and water colours.
