and explained for you so you know what to look for when buying a vehicle!<br />

Abbreviations<br />
4WD/4x4 – Four wheel drive vehicle. Can be very handy especially in a<br />
SUV option. More common in modern utes<br />
ABS – Anti-lock braking system. A safety anti-skid braking system preventing<br />
wheels locking up during braking<br />
A/C – Air conditioning. Most modern vehicles will have this however<br />
1990s vehicles may not. Beware!<br />
ACC – Automatic climate control. More advanced than AC, can control<br />
the temperature of the whole cabin<br />
Alloys – Alloy wheels. Can often improve the look of the vehicle and are<br />
lighter and more durable than steel.<br />
AWD – All wheel drive. Modern version of 4WD however both are vastly<br />
different. As they deliver power to the tyres differently. AWD is permanent<br />
Auto – A/T – Automatic transmission. More commonly found in vehicles<br />
than manual these days<br />
CC/Cruise – Cruise control. Basically set the speed you want to travel<br />
at the and the system takes over the gas for you!<br />
BAS – Brake assist system. Instantly increase braking power in an<br />
emergency situation to shorten the braking distance.<br />
BLIS/BLW – System using radar to inform driver of vehicles in the<br />
proximity of the rear car. Handy when changing lanes<br />
BT – Bluetooth. More commonly found in vehicles after 2012, before<br />
this they can be BT but for phone calls only. No music. <strong>Best</strong> to check or<br />
ask<br />
CVT – Continuously variable transmission. A type of automatic transmission<br />
that has the ability to better control the engine speeds.<br />
DRL – Daytime running lights. Front lamps are used to increase daytime<br />
driving visibility<br />
DPF – Diesel particulate filter. A diesel engine device designed to remove<br />
diesel particulate matter that can build up from the exhaust gas<br />
of a diesel engine.<br />
ESP – Electronic stability program. Helps in correcting vehicle instability<br />
during uncontrollable situations.<br />
FCM – Forward Collision mitigation. Radar used to identify obstructions<br />
ahead and warn of a potential crash.<br />
F/L or FL – Facelift. Happens when a model of a vehicle has its front<br />
redesigned but the functionality maintained. Essentially and upgrade<br />
of its appearance.<br />
Full serv./FSH – Full service history. Detailed history of what and when<br />
the car was in for servicing. Very valuable<br />
LED = Light emitting diodes, usually referring to a type of ultra bright<br />
headlamps that are brighter & longer lasting<br />
MMI/Multimedia – A single integrated interface which controls a variety<br />
of devices & functions of the vehicle. Usually via the steering wheel<br />
and display screen<br />
ORC – On road costs. Registration, WOF, delivery, warranty. All these<br />
can fall under ORC which is added to the advertised or negotiated<br />
price.<br />
Rev. Cam/RVC – Reversing camera. Camera on the rear of the vehicle<br />
to give of a view from behind when reversing.<br />
SAT – NAV/Nav – GPS technology interface built into the system of the<br />
vehicle. Can be spoken & app based in newer vehicles.<br />
SUV – Sport Utility vehicle. Cross between a sedan and a Utility vehicle,<br />
can provide the comfort of a utility with the handling of a sedan.<br />
TDI – Turbo diesel injection. Most modern diesel engines are now fitted<br />
with this feature to maximise performance<br />
Tints – Tinted windows. Either the passenger and drivers windows have<br />
been tinted as well as the rear. Front is not allowed.<br />
ZEV – Zero emission vehicle. Vehicle that emits zero exhaust emissions<br />
while driving, full electric vehicle!<br />

From very meagre beginnings the Muscle Car Madness<br />
show has become undeniably the most popular show<br />
in New Zealand for muscle car enthusiasts, who will head<br />
to the Rangiora A&P Showgrounds in late <strong>January</strong> for the<br />
<strong>2020</strong> event.<br />
For decades the show has been the largest in the South<br />
Island and is the longest- running of the main events,<br />
Kumeu being 26 years old and Beach Hop celebrating<br />
its 20-year anniversary next March, says organiser Craig<br />
Stare.<br />
“MCM is well known for all its ‘outside the box’<br />
drawcards of motoring mayhem,” Craig says.<br />
“Many are not made for road use but just for the fun<br />
of our event. With that we can announce the return of<br />
the spa car, a very popular vehicle. This year will be no<br />
different with the Toy Shed from Rotorua bringing along<br />
a Model A coupe powered by a supercharged World War<br />
2 aeroplane engine, and at the other end of the scale<br />
we have Ian Neary’s ‘Eruption’, a world-class show car<br />
powered by a V<strong>10</strong> Viper, valued at over $600,000.<br />
It’s New Zealand’s best street machine by far.<br />

“A huge contingent of cars are coming down from<br />
Auckland, as well as 22 cars from the Toy Shed and<br />
20 cars from Whakatane to continue their 50-year<br />
celebrations. We also have four cars from Northland.<br />
“If all things go to plan we will have two top show cars<br />
in attendance from the Loco Banditos lowrider club<br />
in Bakersfield, California. One is Kyle Dann's radically<br />
chopped 1960 Pontiac, the likes of which have never been<br />
seen before. The owner-applied custom paint was applied<br />
in his shop, K Daddyz Kustomz, in crazy purples and lilacs<br />
and is a multi-award winner.<br />
“The other car is Joe Wallem's 1960 Cadillac, also<br />
painted by Kyle. Initially this car was to debut at the<br />
Grand National roadster show, but he has decided to<br />
come to Rangiora instead. There have been a lot of<br />
shipping problems but our mates at Kiwi Shipping are<br />
moving heaven and earth to make it happen,”Craig says.<br />
Music & street cruises all part of the muscle car event<br />
The <strong>2020</strong> Muscle Car Madness event will again feature<br />
an array of top bands to entertain the crowds. They will<br />
include the Hillbilly Hellcats from Colorado, (they will also<br />
play a gig at the Club Tavern on the following Wednesday<br />
night), Flyin' Saucers from Melbourne, Recliner Rockers<br />
from Auckland, Sign of the Firebird (burnout pad from 12<br />
noon), Brothers Grimm, Sound Control, plus others. Several<br />
kids’ bands will play on the Sunday.<br />
The retro pageant will start earlier this year, kicking off at<br />
12 noon on Saturday, with all classes, including children,<br />
enabling everyone to enjoy the ever-popular Stadium<br />
Finance burnout competition.<br />
“Again there has been strong interest with top North<br />
Islanders coming along to keep us all honest,” organiser<br />
Craig Stare says.<br />
“The later start of 1.30 p.m. each day gives the organisers<br />
more time to scrutineer the large numbers of competitors.”<br />
Just under <strong>10</strong>00 cars are pre-entered for the five-day<br />
activities with another 800-<strong>10</strong>00 cars expected on the<br />
public display days. On Thursday night there will be a preevent<br />
warm-up cruise with some 200 cars doing a “lap of<br />
luxury”, taking in Rangiora's main street just before 7p.m<br />

That night, competitors will be treated to a world-class<br />
cabaret night, while Friday will see many of the cars<br />
leaving camp to participate in the Classic Cover Insurance<br />
Great Summer Fun Run at 11am.<br />
Public days are Saturday, <strong>January</strong> 25 and Sunday, <strong>January</strong><br />
26, with a new earlier start of 9am and show cars being<br />
admitted from 7.45 a.m. This year the arena will be only<br />
displaying cars that are at least 20 years old. Newer,<br />
modern cars can be displayed in the lower display area<br />
through gate 2.<br />

Mitsubishi ASX VRX<br />
You sure know you’re hurting when you’ve<br />
got a painful back.<br />
Mine has been bugging me for a few weeks<br />
now, and it’s brought to my attention how<br />
difficult it is getting in and out of some<br />
cars, yet highlights how easy it is to do the<br />
same in a sport utility vehicle.<br />
I’ve just driven two Mitsubishi SUVs, one<br />
after the other, an Outlander and ASX. I felt<br />
comfortable in both and the seat height<br />
made for easy entry and egress.<br />
On top of that, the ride the modern SUV<br />
provides doesn’t tax the body, there is<br />
plenty of suspension movement, and<br />
there is an element of suppleness within<br />
the spring and damper rates that easily<br />
cushions the hits from road ripples,<br />
bumps and ruts.<br />
This evaluation focuses on the ASX, a<br />
Lancer-based mid-size SUV that has been<br />
with Mitsubishi since 2011. Meaning active<br />
smart crossover, the ASX has undergone a<br />
raft of changes throughout its lifecycle and<br />
I’m pleased to report that the upgrades and<br />
refinements over the years easily make it a<br />
tempting proposition in today’s market.<br />
For <strong>2020</strong> the ASX had a fairly hefty<br />
makeover; well, in that context it has had<br />
a strong refresh up front, the frontal area<br />
now has a bold, edgy design which sure<br />
captures attention, it is a departure from<br />
the soft, curvy lines of its predecessor.<br />
The test car was painted a nice new colour<br />
– sunshine orange – which also aroused<br />
favourable comment. The upgrade doesn’t<br />
finish there either, there are cosmetic<br />
changes inside, notably the inclusion of a<br />
larger screen which makes navigating the<br />
vehicle’s functions just that much easier.<br />
In terms of mechanical changes, the ASX<br />
has changed direction slightly. No longer<br />
is there a four-wheel-drive model, all<br />
variants are front-drive only and all are<br />
powered by a petrol engine – gone is the<br />
diesel option. Mitsubishi also state that<br />
for buyers who want an SUV with fourwheel-drive,<br />
its Eclipse Cross captures<br />
that part of the market.<br />
The ASX range starts at $29,990, and<br />
ends at $41,090 for the 2.4-litre VRX as<br />
evaluated. It’s important to note that there<br />
are two entry-level models and both are<br />
2-litre powered.<br />
However, the 2360cc unit develops 123kW<br />
and 222Nm, and is paired to a six-step<br />
continuously variable automatic. These<br />
power and torque outputs are traditional,<br />
they arrive tall in the rev band at 6000rpm<br />
and 4<strong>10</strong>0rpm respectively; nevertheless,<br />
when you have the benefit of CVT there is<br />
a constant point of gearing which instantly<br />
meets throttle request.<br />
The ASX feels lively and will cut out a<br />
standstill to <strong>10</strong>0km/h time in 9.2sec, it’s<br />
also quite smart on a highway overtake,<br />
5.5sec to make 120km/h from 80km/h is<br />
about the norm for a vehicle such as this.<br />
It also cruises quietly at highway speed<br />
and affords a smooth ride. Benefitting<br />
from the original four-wheel-drive chassis<br />
engineering, the ASX is sprung on a fully<br />
independent front strut/rear multiple<br />
link system. While the rear end doesn’t<br />
carry driveshafts any more, the set-up<br />
is compliant and as I’ve alluded to it<br />
is dampened only moderately so that<br />
the occupants benefit from a smooth,<br />
controlled ride.<br />
I pointed the test car at a couple of tricky<br />
corners along my test route, it turns nicely<br />
and feeds positive information to the<br />
steering wheel as to how the tyres react<br />
under pressure.<br />
Even without four-wheel-drive there is still<br />
the feel that grip levels are elevated, while<br />
balance is fully retained. I like the way the<br />
ASX drives, it’s no sports car but it does<br />

have performance and handling ability<br />
which is far in excess of its purpose.<br />
In terms of fuel use, Mitsubishi has done<br />
well to lean out the engine. As I remarked<br />
previously, it has been around for some<br />
time, but it is a fuel miser and carries a<br />
7.9-litre per <strong>10</strong>0km (36mpg) combined<br />
cycle claim.<br />
The fuel usage readout was constantly<br />
listing at around 8.4l/<strong>10</strong>0km (33mpg)<br />
during my time with the test car, and I can<br />
