based on complexity. Preference was given to
exhibits that demanded more in-depth review.
These design documents include a new level of
detail for the galleries and selected exhibits in
a series of digital 3-D renderings of each deck.
Along the east wall of the decks, AldrichPears
is maximizing the space created by the external
sails motif to present large-scale murals of Coast
Guard operations pertinent to the subject matter
presented nearby. The images shown in the
renderings are notional, but give a sense of how
visitors will be immersed in the action.
The Helicopter Hoist Rescue Simulator will place
visitors in the middle of an airborne rescue at
sea—one of the most daring actions of the Coast
Guard. The Situation Analysis Simulator challenges
visitors to make split-second decisions based
solely on what they see on the horizon from the
bridge of a Coast Guard Cutter. These experiences
will inspire the next generation of engineers,
mathematicians, environmental scientists and
Coast Guard members.
“At this stage,” Pulver said, “we are looking to
ensure that the accounts dating back over two
centuries are told effectively. There is so much
for the general public to learn and it is exciting to
begin to see how the exhibit designers will bring
Coast Guard stories to life.”
