Oaklands School Oaklands School in Halswell is being transformed, with three new purpose built blocks and the refurbishment of remaining buildings. Last year the redevelopment of the school began as part of the Canterburywide school building programme following the earthquakes. The first part of the redevelopment involved a new building linking and expanding the junior block; a new administration block; the transformation of the former office into a dedicated high-technology hub for Yr 7 and 8 students; and construction of a new combined library and flexible learning space. This year the redevelopment continues – and will be completed – with the refurbishment of existing buildings, including two long brick ‘Canterbury blocks’ that were built in the 1960s when the school opened. Principal Margaret Trotter says they are now more than half way through the Welcome to new students for the 2020 school year. A lot of effort had gone into minimising disruption to teaching, learning and the neighbouring community during the project, and everyone’s patience was greatly appreciated, Mrs Trotter said. The Ministry of Education funded the ‘building’ part of the redevelopment but a lot of costs, such as playgrounds, landscaping, furniture, curtains and new technology items, would be paid for by the school’s Board of Trustees and the Parent Teacher Association, Mrs Trotter said. This community input to the school’s future was valued, she said. The redevelopment is scheduled to finish before the end of 2020.
