We’d all go away • By Louis Day A 24-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court in relation to the theft of a tip jar from New Brighton’s Salt on the Pier restaurant. Timi Te Hau, 24 is facing one shoplifting charge in connection to the New Year’s Day theft that was caught on camera. The footage showed a man and woman in gang regalia together to Port Robinson and stuff like that, and the garden, he liked to do that as well.” She said he loved his wife Dot Kirk and cared for her in her last years. “She needed to be cared for so he pretty much downed everything, it was just on his retirement actually, so he looked after her for seven and a half years at home.” Mr Kirk was also proud to be “born and bred” in New Brighton, she said. Mr Kirk was one of three people from east Christchurch recognised in the New Year Honours. Ranui Ngarimu from North walking away with the jar that contained $100-$150. The empty jar was later found in the lift outside the restaurant. Te Hau will next appear in court on January 21. He is also facing a number of unrelated charges. Salt on The Pier owneroperator Sam Alla said the behaviour was typical of the New Brighton area. “This behaviour is becoming more and more prominent around New Brighton unfortunately,” he said. “We have a cafe downstairs and a lot of people steal ice creams from down there. “We caught someone once and they were really frustrated and said: ‘Hey, I’m not paying for this.’ “It is just very disappointing and frustrating behaviour to see around New Brighton,’’ Mr Alla said. ‘People person’ recognised in New Year Honours New Brighton was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori art and culture and Steve Bush from Richmond received a QSM for services to environmental rejuvenation. Police allege fire intentional • Sophie Cornish POLICE ARE alleging a woman purposely lit a fire that ripped through a North New Brighton home earlier this month. The 34-year-old was arrested and charged with wilfully damaging property by fire and appeared in the district court last week. Firefighters were called to the blaze on Woodgrove Ave just before 9am on January 3. It was believed no one was inside the house at the time. A nearby resident told Pegasus Post they saw black smoke coming from the house. “They [Fire and Emergency New Zealand] were on to it straight away, but I tell you what, if they weren’t, that place would have burned to the ground,” the resident said.
