CORAL RESTORATION
FOUNDATION CURAÇAO
AN INTRODUCTION BY DIVE CURAÇAO
Coral Restoration Foundation Curaçao (CRFC) is a non-profit
organization founded in 2015. CRFC is dedicated to restoring the
shallow water coral reef systems in Curaçao and educating the
community on the significance of our oceans. The organization
works with critically endangered species of corals. The first step is
to grow them in nurseries and than to outplant them onto new sites.
To date CRFC has outplanted over 7.300 corals at seven different
locations and engaged more than local 150 students.
“The significance of this Curaçao Coral Reef Restoration program
is that together as a community here in Curaçao we are restoring
our shallow water reef system, while educating our youth about the
importance of protecting and preserving our natural ecosystem,”
according to Pol Bosch, CRFC. Pol believes that programs like this
help solidify a natural sustainability for future generations.
“Our island’s subaquatic life is one of the many things that sets
us apart from the other Caribbean islands. So, it is of immense
importance that we all work together as a sustainable community
to conserve our ocean. The commitment of the Coral Restoration
Foundation Curaçao is one of the first steps for sustaining and
spreading awareness of our island’s ocean life. With the assistance
and teamwork of the entire community I am certain that we can
make this initiative bigger, create a sustainable change and
provide the upcoming generation a healthier ecological marine
life.” - Mr. Miles Mercera, CEO of Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism
Association.
Support from like-minded businesses and responsible dive
operators allows CRFC to engage with a global community about
the importance of healthy oceans. They believe it is critical that we
re-invest in our natural resources to ensure a sustainable outcome
for future generations. The fact is, we are incredibly grateful to have
access to such unbelievable biodiversity today here on Curaçao, but
to assume that without care and attention that our environment can
sustain itself would be naïve. We must do our very best every day
to restore what we as humans have damaged or even destroyed
over the years.
None of this work would be possible without the sponsorship and
support from local partners and individuals that want to help make
a difference.
