"My parents were comparatively unsophisticated people. My mother came
from a small town (Youngstown, Ohio) to a big city (Brooklyn), but
remained a small town person. Neither of them had much formal
education, but were certainly cooperative in helping me to get my
education. My father may have given me my first interest in travelling
because he enjoyed the limited amount he did during his lifetime."

32. HERMANN 5 SCHAFFNER (NATHAN 4 , ABRAHAM 3 , NATHAN 2 SALOMON, SALOMON 1 NATHAN) was born 05 Dec
1845 in Eppelsheim, Rheinhessen, GER, and died 02 Jun 1893 in Chicago, IL. He married RACHEL BECKER
SCHAFFNER 03 Mar 1873, daughter of NATHAN BECKER and HENRIETTE BECKER. She was born 06 May 1854,
and died 02 Feb 1943 in Cleveland, OH.
Notes for HERMANN SCHAFFNER:
Hermann arrived in the USA at 19 in 1864, with his father (Nathan) and
his sister (Henriette S. Hammersley). In 1876 he founded a private bank,
Hermann Schaffner and Co.,when Chicago had a population of only 500,000.
It handled receivables purchased from wholesalers and sold to banks, the
forerunner of today's "commercial paper". In the Panic of 1893, there
was a run on the bank and Hermann became depressed and ended his life.
His company failed, all his assets and those of A.G. Becker, his junior
partner went to creditors. The bank paid out 10 cents on the dollar.When
established, Hermann sent for the rest of his brothers and sisters. He
married his first cousin, Rachel Becker. (See pages 305 and 335.)
Notes for RACHEL BECKER SCHAFFNER:
Little personal information is available about Rachel Becker Schaffner,
daughter of Henriettte, known as Yetta, who arrived in the US in 1864
with her brother Nathan (see page 192). Rachel married her first cousin,
Nathan's son Hermann, who founded Hermann Schaffner and Company. The
life insurance after Hermann's untimely death at 48, could not be
touched by creditors and therefore was available to found the new firm
A.G. Becker & Co. (her brother) in 1893, with her son Robert C.
Schaffner as an employee who later became Chairman of the Board.

Notes for ARTHUR SCHAFFNER:
Arthur Schaffner was fortunate in being able to have a college education
before his father's bank, Hermann Schaffner and Company, was lost in the
Panic of 1893. He attended Harvard and became an attorney. He was
married late in life to Alice Boughton, a missionary. They had no
offspring.
