Rosalie Cahn grew up in Danville, IL and obtained her AB at <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Chicago in 1905, at a time when it was not common for<br />

women <strong>to</strong> go on <strong>to</strong> "higher education". Her husband was President of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Progressive Tailoring Company of Chicago, and also President of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Standard Club in that city. They were very beloved in <strong>the</strong><br />

community.<br />

He attended <strong>the</strong> University of Chicago Business School and founded Stern<br />

and Elkan Hide Company in Chicago in 1887. This was once <strong>the</strong> largest<br />

hide company in <strong>the</strong> US and one of <strong>the</strong> largest in <strong>the</strong> world. It subsequently<br />

became H.Elkan Hide Co. Founding member of <strong>the</strong> NY Hide Commodity<br />

Exchange. Board member Commodities Exchange of Chicago. He was appointed<br />

Louisiana Colonel by Gov. Earl K. Long, 1957. He was 59 when he married<br />

his wife of 27 and he died at 78. She died two years later and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

three children came under <strong>the</strong> guardianship of Patricia Stern Stein.<br />

Alfred expanded a family business known as Progress Tailoring Co. which<br />

manuactured made-<strong>to</strong>-measure suits. Using door-<strong>to</strong>-door salesmen, this<br />

type of business which flourished in Chicago from 1930-1960, is now depicted<br />

in an exhibit at <strong>the</strong> Smithsonian Institute. His wife, Hannah,<br />

noted for her beauty as a young woman, was an avid equestrian, a hobby<br />

equally enjoyed by Alfred. In later life Hannah devoted herself <strong>to</strong><br />
