Notes for SARA SEDEL BECKER:<br />

Sara was born Jewish, but married a Lu<strong>the</strong>ran husband, August Becker,<br />

whom she met in Switzerland. They lived in Hessloch, ran a bakery. Their<br />

four sons were reared as Lu<strong>the</strong>rans. Her husband died prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hitler<br />

period; she continued <strong>to</strong> conduct <strong>the</strong> bakery in Hessloch, and was apparently<br />

not harmed by <strong>the</strong> Nazis. She was well-liked and led a quiet, inconspicuous<br />

life. One of her sons died in military service during WWII<br />

but could not be buried in a military cemetery because of his Jewish<br />

ancestry. Bertram <strong>Schaffner</strong> was not aware of her existence although he<br />

visited Hessloch a number of times prior <strong>to</strong> her death. He first learned<br />

of her around 1985 from <strong>the</strong> Deputy Mayor of Hessloch, Wilfried Menger.<br />

born 26 Oct 1874 in Gruenstadt, GER, and died May 1940 in Mainz, GER.<br />

Notes for JOSEPH SCHAFFNER:<br />

Joseph and Frieda died as a consequence of <strong>the</strong> Holocaust. Joseph was<br />

taken <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> concentration camp of Theresienstadt on February 5, 1942<br />

and he died <strong>the</strong>re. Frieda died alone in Mainz, in a nursing home in<br />

1940.<br />
