Notes for SARA SEDEL BECKER:
Sara was born Jewish, but married a Lutheran husband, August Becker,
whom she met in Switzerland. They lived in Hessloch, ran a bakery. Their
four sons were reared as Lutherans. Her husband died prior to the Hitler
period; she continued to conduct the bakery in Hessloch, and was apparently
not harmed by the Nazis. She was well-liked and led a quiet, inconspicuous
life. One of her sons died in military service during WWII
but could not be buried in a military cemetery because of his Jewish
ancestry. Bertram Schaffner was not aware of her existence although he
visited Hessloch a number of times prior to her death. He first learned
of her around 1985 from the Deputy Mayor of Hessloch, Wilfried Menger.

Notes for JOSEPH SCHAFFNER:
Joseph and Frieda died as a consequence of the Holocaust. Joseph was
taken to the concentration camp of Theresienstadt on February 5, 1942
and he died there. Frieda died alone in Mainz, in a nursing home in
1940.
