Notes for LOUIS BENSDORF:<br />

The Louis Bensdorfs lived in a very nice,if a bit dar, apartment in central Mannheim (F4,5) above <strong>the</strong> inherited<br />

butcher shop. Louis retired early, his grandchildren never saw <strong>the</strong> shop in operation, but remember <strong>the</strong> smoky<br />

meat smell which never left <strong>the</strong> apartment entirely. Louis devoted much of his later yers attending <strong>the</strong> Mannheim<br />

"Hauptsynagogue" (liberal) which was located within a block from home where he had many friends.<br />

Elise is <strong>the</strong> link <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Schaffner</strong>s. She was well educated and a gifted artist. There is a self-portrait as a young<br />

girl (black and white drawing( at Bea Reynolds' house in LA.<br />

Very little is known about Jacob Bensdorf. He left his parents in Mannheim in <strong>the</strong> early 1900's and emigrated<br />

<strong>to</strong> Chicago where he met and married Gertrude Becker. He died before any of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Bensdorfs arrived in<br />

<strong>the</strong> US.<br />
