SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Tuesday January 21 2020 3 News Near misses prompt safety plan • By Matt Slaughter A PLAN is being developed to improve the safety of pedestrians, including Addington School pupils who cross Brougham St to get to school. The New Zealand Transport Agency has been working with Addington School, the city council and the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board to develop the plan, which it expects to present to the community for feedback early this year. Improvements to the two school crossing points at Collins St and Selwyn St will be made as part of this plan. The specifics of the other safety improvements will be announced once NZTA has finalised its preferred option. Southern View reported on December 17 Addington School’s board of trustees chairwoman Jo Robertson said “There are near misses often” on Brougham St where one of its entrances is. The board of trustees want more signage saying ‘school’ to be installed along this street, where the speed limit is 60km/h. Implementation is anticipated for late 2020 subject to funding. “Transport Agency staff are very aware that these two crossing points are extremely busy when pupils are using them, with people pushing buggies, older children, children on scooters and cyclists all getting across when they get the cross now signal,” he said. Mr Turay did not say if these improvements will include installing more ‘school’ signage but said: “There are four signs warning motorists that the school and children are in the vicinity of Brougham St – two on each side of Brougham St, one for each lane in effect in both directions.” Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board chairwoman Karolin Potter said it is good something will be done to improve safety measures along Brougham St but she is concerned how effective any option adopted will be, given how busy traffic often is on it. “What they can do with Addington [School] must be limited. I can’t imagine that they’ll introduce a pedestrian way. Work started earlier this month. WETLAND CONSTRUCTION A new naturalised wetland stormwater facility to service Halswell properties area should be constructed by October 30. This will also involve the realigning and naturalising of a section of the drain on Quaifes Rd. Work started on this project earlier this month. BOARD MEETING The first Linwood-Central- Heathcote Community Board meeting for the year will be held on February 3 in the boardroom at 180 Smith St, Linwood. Meetings have been in recess since December 9. SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS Work is due to begin later this month to extend the existing median island at the Springs Rd/Garvins Rd intersection by 15m to make minor safety improvements. The work will take place between the hours of 7am and 6pm. The completion date is early next month.
