Funds nearly found for boat shed
• By Jess Gibson
THE REBUILD of a historic
boat shed in Moncks Bay has
now been stalled for eight
months.
But Christchurch Yacht Club
member and
project manager
Frank Coppens
says the end is
still in sight.
Construction
Pat
McIntosh
of the club’s deck
at the site on
Main Rd finished
in May using $1.174 million
which came from the city council,
Coastal Pathway Project and
from grants the club raised itself.
Since then, members have
been busy with further fundraising
to place a boatshed building
on the deck.
Mr Coppens would not
disclose how much money was
needed to complete the project
as it still needs to go out for
tender, making it “commercially
sensitive.”
However, he said the club
has nearly reached its goal and
is hoping to have the building
finished before the 2020/2021
boating season, which starts in
October.
He said the club has previously
gone to organisations such
as Lotto, The Lion Foundation,
Rata Foundation and Canterbury
Community Trust for
grants.
“Those organisations have
been very generous and supportive.
“There are challenges around
health and safety because we
have to have handrails and all
that sort of thing installed.
That will be a part of the shed
build.”
The deck is 41m x 13.5m and
the boat shed will be 21m x 9m.
Once the project is completed,
the shed would be used by the
club, while the public could use
the deck.
“It is an ongoing project and we
CLOSED OFF:
The decking
at the Moncks
Bay boat
shed site has
been fenced
off while the
Christchurch
Yacht Club
continues to
raise funds for
the building.
are very keen to get the shed finished
so we can actually use it.”
Meanwhile, Redcliffs Residents
Association secretary Pat
McIntosh said the deck has been
a “nuisance” while it is fenced
off as it has been narrowing the
footpath.
“It’s awkward for people to get
around.”
The original boat shed was
demolished in June 2011 after it
was damaged in the February
22, 2011, earthquake.
