Public cruises back
on Tug Lyttelton
• By Jess Gibson
AFTER THREE years, it’s
back to smooth sailing for Tug
Lyttelton.
The 112-year-old tugboat was
fully booked for its second day
running a public cruise around
the harbour on Sunday.
It had been out of commission
for three years due to a need
for repairs and the requirement
to pass a number of expensive
surveys.
Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society,
whose members voluntarily
keep the tug in full working order,
had financial struggles over
this period as passenger cruise
tickets go towards keeping the
tug operational.
The passenger cruise was originally
scheduled to take place in
December 2018 but was pushed
back to January, then February
and then to this boating season
due to delays with the passenger
service licence.
Grants from the city council
and other fundraising meant the
society was able to repair the vessel
and have it pass a $83,240 dry
dock survey so there would be no
more delays.
For its first day on January
12, two 45-minute-long sessions
were held and between them,
there were about 100 passengers.
Society board member Roger
Ellery said it feels fantastic to
have the cruises back up and
running.
FULL VESSEL:
There were blue
skies as Lyttelton’s
historic tugboat
ran its second day
of public cruises
on Sunday.
“Now that we’ve come back
from the brink it’s a tremendous
morale booster to get them up
and going again.”
Cruises will now run every
Sunday until the end of the
summer sailing season.
REBUILD: A new $3m pavilion will replace the old, earthquakedamaged
Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving clubhouse.
Surf club construction
to get under way
CONSTRUCTION of the
Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving
clubhouse can get under way
following an official blessing
ceremony.
Maui Stuart of Te Hapū o
Ngāti Wheke blessed the site and
workers who will be involved in
the rebuild of the new $3m facility
on Friday.
Ngāti Wheke holds mana
whenua or right to the land over
Taylors Mistake.
The surf life saving club has
been operating from Taylors
Mistake Beach for 103 years.
The old building was red-stickered
after the 2016 Valentines
Day earthquake rendered previous
stop-gap repairs unsafe.
Since then the club has had to
operate out of three Portacom
buildings.
A large number of club members
and residents attended the
ceremony.
After the blessing, club president
Viv Bickley thanked Mr
Stuart and acknowledged Ngāti
Wheke as holding mana whenua
over the land.
The club and Ngāti Wheke
will be working with together in
the coming months and into the
future.
Project leader David Hill spoke
about and thanked the large
team of people working on the
rebuild.
Miles Construction will soon
start on stage one of the project
which is the construction of the
gear shed.
