Page 6, Ashburton's The Courier, Thursday 23 January 2020 New owner for Mt Somers tavern By Mick Jensen There’s been achange behind the bar at the Mt Somers Tavern, with publican Max Smith departing for retirement and Bryan Carter coming in as the new owner. While Mr Smith and his wife Sandy shift back to the Wairarapa after an eightyear stint at the helm, Mr Carter is returning to the district that he grew up in and apub he frequented as ayoung fellow. Born in Southbridge, he completed his school education in Methven. ‘‘I remember being able to get served in the Mt Somers Tavern as a teenager, but Icouldn’t get adrink in Methven because my face was too well known.’’ The drinking age back then had been 21, said Mr Carter, who worked in earthmoving and transport jobs after leaving school. He managed the Amberley Lime Company for awhile and also worked for Burnett Transport in his early years. The new tavern owner is well travelled these days and has worked and run businesses in anumber of countries over the past 40 years. ‘‘I ran an art gallery and gardens with awife in Hawaii for awhile and later afish and chip shop on the mainland in Sequim, Washington State. ‘‘I had astint running atransport company in Australia and worked in heavy machinery, transport and hospitality in Papua New Guinea.’’ Mr Carter said he was single these days, but had been married three times and was on the look out for staff to help him run the tavern. 2244382 Your LocalVoice I’m available to meet with constituents onMondays and Fridays, and anyday that Parliament isn’t sitting. Mr Carter said he was also looking at afuture AirBnB option at the tavern, which could provide overflow accommodation in the township or complement what was already being offered. Renovations and aspruceup were also on the cards in the future, he said. Playful piece rules art roost Wellingtonbased sculptor and artist Regan Gentry has installed anew artwork at the Ashburton Art Gallery to add to his ongoing project called Foot in the Door. The project was started in 2004 and is aplayful take on the cliché and involves the artist installing one foot of ruler or tape measure into the front door of galleries he visits around New Zealand, Australia and further afield. Other venues already involved in the project include Te Papa Tongarewa, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Aigantighe Art Gallery and Eastern Southland Gallery. Gentry created Flour Power, a13m tall streetlight installation which resembles a sheaf of wheat, on Colombo Street in Christchurch. Nearby on Tuam and High streets, he has anewer sculpture called Woods from the Trees, which depicts three Left -Artist Regan Gentry recently installed measuring tape for his Foot In The Door artwork at Ashburton Art Gallery. 8m tall rimu trees crafted from reclaimed timber from homes demolished after the Christchurch earthquakes. The former Ashburton Art Gallery on Baring Square also had aFoot in the Door artwork. It was installed inside the post slot of the main doors and escaped the attention of most visitors. The art gallery approached Gentry after the demolition of the old art gallery and he has now made his mark in the new gallery building. Van Gogh film reveals artist’s envy of Japan The Ashburton Art Gallery committee is organising aspecial screening of thedocumentary Van Goghand Japan on February 14. VanGogh wrote to his brother Theothatheenvied the Japanese, despite never visiting their country. Featuringvan Gogh’s personal letters andwritten accountsby friends and contemporaries, the moving Van Gogh and Japan film reveals the story of the artist’slittleknown deepconnection to Japanese art,and the role it has in understanding hismost iconic works. The Dutchpostimpressionist painter is among art’smost famous andinfluential figures. Tickets for the7pm screeningat theRegentCinemacost$25 each andinclude acomplimentaryglass of bubbles.Ticket holderswill also be entitledtoadiscounted dessert at Ashburton restaurant Formosa after the film. Tickets can be purchased from theart gallery receptionorfrom gallery committee members. Proceeds from the fundraiser will supportthe programmes and activities at the gallery. Local news at www.starnews.co.nz Briefs Consents The value of building consentsin the Methven area for the 2019 year was $4,322,040, down on the 2018 figure of $8,046,237. Some 38 consents were issued in 2019, compared with 50 the previous year. Nearly aquarter ($1,116,380) of the 2019 consent total was recorded in January and there were no consentsissuedat all in October. Water supply Upgrades to Methven’s water supply and wastewater will be the subject of afuture workshopof Ashburton council’s InfrastructureServices Committee. Water storage and supply options will be abig focus of the workshop, which could include the input and attendance from members of the Methven Community Board (MCB). Cemetery Aclean up of trees at the Methven Cemetery is earmarked for mid February. The clean up will thin out the pinus radiata. Council’s open spaces manager David Askin said anumber of cemeteries around the district featured plantations on their sites. Those plantations had been, and continued to be, tidied up by his team. Mr Askin said therewas no work scheduled yet to clean up some of the larger trees along the Methven Walkway. Candidates There will be an informal meeting in Methven on January 28 for the community to meetthe three candidates standing for the fifth placeonMethven Community Board. The 7.30pm gathering will be held in the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall. Voting in the byelection opens on January 27 and closes on February 18 and is by postal vote. The byelection is expected to cost in the region of $15,000. Caretaker Mike McKenzie is the recently appointed Methven area caretaker and started his dutieson January 13. The caretaker is responsible for general maintenance work in the Methven area, including the Inland Scenic Route, and undertakes mowing duties, general maintenance of the reserve areas, litter removal and maintenance of the public conveniences. Mr McKenzie worked for council and with the district forester in the early 1990s. New yard Contractors involved in the CBD revitalisation project will be storing their machinery and equipment in anewlycreated yard on Havelock Street, on vacant land next to Pioneer Hall. Wooden fences painted white have been erected this week. Tru Line Civil will begin the $15 million CBD upgrade on Monday. Work is expected totake two years and the area will become more pedestrian and cycle friendly.
