Sales Stats Tell A Tale<br />
New vehicle sales may have ended last<br />
year just over 7000 units down on 2018,<br />
but 2019 was still the third-strongest year<br />
for the new car industry on record.<br />
Along with a further lift in market share for<br />
SUVs and a modest surge in pure electric and<br />
electric hybrid vehicles (EV) sales, the overall<br />
sales drop was one of key trends of 2019.<br />
Confirmed after December sales<br />
were tallied, the fall from 161,770 new<br />
registrations in 2018 to 154,763 in 2019, was<br />
the first sales drop since 2009. Even so, last<br />
year’s new vehicle sales total has only been<br />
bettered twice before, in 2018 and 2017.<br />
Representing a 4.3% decline, the 2019<br />
new vehicle result was due in significant<br />
measure to declining sales of larger<br />
passenger vehicles and softening<br />
light commercial registrations. It was<br />
accompanied by a 12.8% slip in used import<br />
registrations, which fell to their lowest level<br />
since 2014.<br />
And while 2019 has been the best year yet<br />
for electric vehicle sales here, new EVs still<br />
accounted for just 35 of last month’s 11,160<br />
registrations, with a further 692 hybrid<br />
vehicles in the December mix.<br />
Sports utility vehicles (including a number<br />
that are either pure or hybrid EVs)<br />
accounted for almost 65% of new passenger<br />
vehicle registrations, with their dominance<br />
aptly illustrated in the annual sales tallies by<br />
model; eight of the 10 top-selling passenger<br />
vehicles last year were sport utilities.<br />
The country’s top-selling passenger vehicle<br />
remained the Toyota Corolla, ahead of the<br />
Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Kia Sportage,<br />
Suzuki Swift and Mitsubishi Outlander. The<br />
Mitsubishi ASX, Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai<br />
Tucson and Nissan X-Trail rounded out the<br />
passenger car top 10.<br />
While Ford failed to register a new model in<br />
the passenger vehicle top 10, the company’s<br />
Ranger topped the light commercial<br />
charts once more, and was the country’s<br />
top-selling new vehicle of any kind by a<br />
massive margin. Second-place honours<br />
for both light commercial and overall new<br />
vehicle sales went to the Toyota Hilux.<br />
The Mitsubishi Triton, Holden Colorado,<br />
and Nissan Navara completed the light<br />
commercial top five, with all three also<br />
making the overall new vehicle top 10.<br />
By manufacturer, Toyota’s perennial new<br />
vehicle sales leadership — now stretching<br />
back for 32 consecutive years — was<br />
unchallenged. Its 20.1% market share was<br />
more than double the 9.6% share earned by<br />
second-placed Ford.<br />
Mitsubishi edged out Holden to take third<br />
place with 8.3% and 7.8% market share<br />
respectively. As was the case in 2018, Mazda,<br />
Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Suzuki and Volkswagen<br />
completed the top10 by manufacturer. Of<br />
these ten, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Hyundai and<br />
Kia all achieved overall sales growth despite<br />
the total market decline<br />

Mitsubishi Triton VRX<br />
I don’t like it when I’m left defeated.<br />
However, I was beaten when it came time<br />
to take home a bulky piece of furniture my<br />
wife and I purchased. It was simply too<br />
long for the deck of a Mitsubishi Triton.<br />
Transporting the item resorted to plan B –<br />
waiting for a large SUV to come my way.<br />
That didn’t leave me disappointed with<br />
the Triton though, it is still the useful<br />
load carrier for the tradie or recreational<br />
enthusiast, and I did find other uses for it<br />
such as picking up a new television and<br />
taking a good amount of recycling and<br />
green waste to the transfer station.<br />
Early last year the Triton had a major<br />
upgrade. Well, it’s mostly a facelift, but<br />
the bold new frontal treatment gives the<br />
ute a more aggressive look and, of course,<br />
refinements in and around the vehicle will<br />
keep it fresh through <strong>2020</strong> and beyond.<br />
While there are a few engineering<br />
upgrades, the Triton still has the same<br />
engine and basic chassis and suspension<br />
elements. That’s a good thing, it can mix<br />
it with the market frontrunners, it is very<br />
much a preferential purchase.<br />
The evaluation ute was a high-grade<br />
VRX-specced double cab with automatic<br />
transmission. The latter is an all-new sixspeed<br />
type, it is a beauty with smooth<br />
shifts, and in VRX form it also has a paddleshift<br />
sequential mechanism. Mitsubishi was<br />
listing this VRX as a special offer during<br />
my time with the test car, it was sitting at<br />
around $50,000. To my way of thinking,<br />
that is extraordinary value considering its<br />
specification level and how well it stacks up<br />
to the opposition.<br />
Major items include leather trim, keyless<br />
entry and ignition, cruise control and speed<br />
limiter, rear view reversing camera, and a<br />
host of advanced safety features.<br />
Under the bonnet sits a 2.4-litre fourcylinder<br />
turbocharged diesel engine. It is<br />
rated at 135kW with 437Nm of torque, both<br />
figures are realised low in the rev band at<br />
3500rpm and 2500rpm. Even though it<br />
is diesel-fed it is a lively engine and gets<br />
about its work willingly, it is also one of the<br />
quietest engines in its class, and that’s a<br />
credit to the engineers – getting a big block<br />
four-potter to work smoothly takes some<br />
doing. It is evident that the Triton has the<br />
benefit of much soundproofing, and it has a<br />
well refined engine in the first instance.<br />
A lot of development has also been carried<br />
out to cut down fuel use, it is now to the<br />
point where an 8.6-litre per 100km (33mpg)<br />
combined cycle can be claimed.<br />
During my testing time the trip computer<br />
was constantly listing at around 10l/100km<br />
(28mpg) with a 7l/100km (40mpg) readout<br />
showing at a steady 100km/h, the engine<br />
just loping over gently at 1700rpm.<br />
On the subject of figures, the Triton fourwheel-drive<br />
has a tow rating of 3500kg<br />
and it will haul a payload of 905kg in a<br />
deck area measuring 1520mm x 1470mm x<br />
475mm (depending on deck liner). It also<br />
has a useful 220mm of ground clearance,<br />
all of these figures are right up with market<br />
demand.<br />
The test ute was riding on 18in wheels with<br />
quite chunky 265/60 Bridgestone Dueler<br />
tyres. Even so, they ride quietly, even on<br />
coarse chip seal, they also offer direct<br />
feedback through the steering. Utes aren’t<br />
known for their ideal handling, but it was<br />
nice to have some surety when I pushed<br />
quickly through some tricky inland corners.<br />
The Triton has handling ability unrealistic<br />
for a working vehicle built on a ladder<br />
chassis and load bearing live rear axle. The<br />
suspension isn’t firm but it is designed just<br />
to capture the traditional movement live<br />
axles tend to generate.<br />

which sits centre console. Due to its<br />
likely role off-road and in loose surface<br />
conditions, the Triton has lowish early ratios<br />

movement on the highway. With so much<br />
torque on tap filling the gaps between<br />
ratios it isn’t something that needs to be<br />
considered, the engine has solid power flow<br />
through the rev band.<br />
On a short, undulating off-road excursion<br />
it impressed with its grip in loose shingle<br />
and its ability to crawl up inclines, low ratio<br />
is very low promoting gentle slow speed<br />
travel.<br />
Today’s pick-up buyer is reaping the<br />
benefits of long and gradual development<br />
processes. It’s no wonder our market is<br />
led by utes, the Triton is a vehicle you can<br />
comfortably put the family in for that trip<br />
into the high country, ski field access road,<br />
or to the beach for a swim or surf.<br />
It’s also the quintessential tow and carry<br />
vehicle. If only that deck had been just a<br />
few centimetres longer.

After opening his first branch in December 2007, Brendon never<br />
would have thought he would be living in Rolleston let alone have<br />
a third Vehicle repair shop that would be based in Rolleston. The<br />
Rosiez Collision repairs Rolleston branch which is located on Iport<br />
drive (in one of the new businesses in the sub division of Rolleston)<br />
was opened in December 2018. This newest branch followed on from<br />
the opening at the start of 2012 of their second branch in Sockburn<br />
on Gerald Connelly drive. Bringing the total to 3 branches and<br />
35 staff making Rosiez Collision repairs one of the largest vehicle<br />
repairers in Canterbury.<br />
Rosiez Collision repairs first branch is also their original site<br />
at 71 Byron Street, Sydenham (Just down from the Waltham<br />
overbridge). Taking over from DT Panel, paint and performance!<br />
This is their major collision repair centre and is fully equipped<br />
with all the latest technology to complete their back to factory<br />
specifications vehicle repairs.<br />
Since opening, Rosiez Collision Repairs has been setting the new<br />
standard for panel and paint repairs in Christchurch. “The way<br />

grow from one workshop in Sydenham, to two other panel beating<br />
branches in Sockburn and Rolleston” says Brendon.<br />

weight. This is the total weight of the<br />
Tare Weight + Payload capacity. You<br />

you want to carry. Look at the ATM to<br />

having a trailer that can carry 3 tonne<br />

tonne. Trailers with aluminium panels<br />
are generally best for this, along with<br />
being lighter, aluminium also resists rust<br />
and corrosion. For a 3 tonne box trailer<br />
with aluminium sides you are generally<br />
looking at around a 550kg tare weight.<br />
This is light enough to manoeuvre<br />
yourself with a jockey wheel.<br />
Tie Down Points –<br />
AKA Lashing Hooks<br />
You will want to tie down your load with<br />
security and confident safety. Look for<br />
a box trailer that comes with strong<br />
sturdy and convenient interior lashing<br />
hooks included. Also use good quality<br />
lashing straps that are not going to<br />
unhook, snap or break in any way.<br />
Material<br />
Since you are likely to own the trailer<br />
for preferably years or decades, ensure<br />
it is manufactured in a durable material<br />
to provide longevity.<br />
Chassis: ALWAYS pick a trailer with<br />
a hot dipped galvanised chassis to<br />
prevent corrosion. European trailers are<br />
usually hot dipped galvanised chassis<br />
since roads are salted in Winter to<br />
prevent ice. It is equally important in<br />
Australia especially on the East Coast<br />
trailers are frequently exposed to salt<br />
air ocean breezes amongst other harsh<br />
environmental conditions.<br />
Sides: As for the rest of the trailer,<br />
bare steel and painted steel should<br />
be avoided. These will rust extremely<br />
quickly. Always go for a trailer that is<br />
galvanised in some way.<br />
Cage, Ramps, Racks, Tarps,<br />
Tops, Nets, etc<br />
You might not need or want any<br />
optional extras now, but find a trailer<br />
that is compatible with additional<br />
extras for the future. Some trailer<br />
manufacturers actually weld the cage<br />
or ladder racks onto the trailer so they<br />

you want, but accessories that can be<br />
added and removed at any time are<br />
generally preferred.<br />
Wheels<br />
Many trailer dealers give second hand<br />
wheels with a trailer. Be sure you are<br />
getting NEW tyres. They are the first<br />
part of the trailer that your safety relies<br />
on. Check the specs and ratings of the<br />
wheels including the Rolling Resistance,<br />
Wet Grip and Noise ratings.<br />
Braking<br />
Trailers with a registered ATM above<br />
750kg must have brakes on all axles<br />
and with a breakaway system.<br />
There are a few options available:<br />
• Override Mechanical<br />
• Override Hydraulic<br />
• Electric Brakes<br />
• Electric Hydraulic<br />
The word “override” is often used<br />
interchangeably with the word<br />
“overrun”. Both mean the same thing.<br />
Ease of Loading & Unloading<br />
Loading Height: Often a higher trailer<br />
means you don’t have to bend over to<br />
load it up. But make sure it’s not too<br />
high as that would mean you need to<br />
lift goods higher.<br />
Removable/Hinging Sides: If the sides<br />
come off or hinge down, this means you<br />
don’t have to lift up & over the side.<br />
Tilt or Tip: If you are loading your trailer<br />
with sand, rubble and other materials,<br />
you might consider a tilt or tip trailer<br />
that can dump the load.<br />
Ramps: Another consideration is ramps<br />
to push goods onto the trailer in a trolly<br />
/ cart / wheel barrow. Of if your goods<br />
are automotive such as a lawn mower<br />
or machinery.<br />
So in conclusion, the appropriate trailer<br />
will have a payload capacity suitable<br />
for what you are carrying, it would have<br />
a manageable tare weight, plentiful<br />
tie-down points, hot dipped galvanised<br />
chassis and aluminium or galvanised<br />
sides, additional accessories, safe NEW<br />
wheels, braking if over 750kg, and easy<br />
loading and unloading features.

Keeping Safety in Tow<br />
There is a lot more that goes into<br />
towing a caravan than securing<br />
the hitch and starting up the<br />
engine. There are crucial elements<br />
that must be correct to ensure<br />
that towing a caravan is a safe<br />
and painless process. However,<br />
understanding the most common<br />
mistakes that drivers make when<br />
engaging in this activity can make<br />
getting out on the open road with<br />
your caravan in tow a much less<br />
intimidating prospect.<br />
First Step<br />
The first step is to make sure your tow is<br />
fixed properly to your vehicle. Get your<br />
tow bar installed by a professional who<br />
can fit the right size and type of tow<br />
to suit you and your vehicle. There are<br />
plenty of towing centres that specialise<br />
in tow bar fitting and who will also be<br />
able to help you with any spares or<br />
parts for your towing equipment should<br />
they become damaged or worn.<br />
Number One Mistake<br />
The number one mistake that drivers<br />
make when towing is speeding.<br />
When you are towing a caravan, your<br />
maximum speed should be 10Kph<br />
lower than the national speed limit. For<br />
example, drivers should not typically<br />
exceed 90 kph. Exceeding these limits<br />
will cause drivers to have inadequate<br />
time to brake in order to ensure the<br />
safety of other cars on the road around<br />
them. Braking is another area of safety<br />
that should be of major concern. Drivers<br />
should always be sure the wiring that<br />
allows your brake lights to translate to<br />
the braking signals on the rear trailer<br />
are functioning. Should this system<br />
breakdown, drivers behind you will<br />
have no idea that you are reducing your<br />
speed, creating a serious risk for a rearend<br />
collision.<br />
The weights of both vehicles you<br />
are using must also be taken into<br />
consideration. If the vehicle doing the<br />
towing is far outweighed by the vehicle<br />
in tow, the chances of losing control on<br />
the road are greatly increased. Using<br />
a vehicle that is not rated to tow the<br />
amount of weight you are dealing with<br />
can also do severe damage to the<br />
engine over time.<br />
Check the towing payload of your<br />
vehicle before hitting the open road or<br />
research the recommended ratios for<br />
safety when it comes to towing your<br />
particular caravan. This will allow you<br />
to avoid overloading on either side.<br />
Uneven weight distribution can be<br />
equally dangerous, quickly leading to<br />
the dreaded snaking and pitching. For<br />
example, avoid packing one end of your<br />
caravan with an excessive amount of<br />
heavy equipment. Distribute additional<br />
weight that comes with gear and<br />
suitcases evenly throughout the space.<br />
Finally, perform all the<br />
normal checks and vehicle<br />
maintenance that come<br />
with any vehicle.<br />
Look for rust and other signs of damage<br />
that might weaken the integrity of<br />
towing components and replace<br />
worn out and damaged parts. Your<br />
inspection should also include checking<br />
fluid levels and ensuring proper tyre<br />
pressure. If your tyres are over or under<br />
inflated, your gas mileage will suffer,<br />
your caravan will be less than stable<br />
when encountering bumps along the<br />
road, and you will increase your risk of<br />
experiencing a blow-out or flat tyre.<br />

What type of caravan<br />
would suit me?<br />
There isn’t really any rule of<br />
thumb relating to size and<br />
weight of a caravan. A small<br />
caravan packed to the gunnels<br />
with kit could be heavier than<br />
a larger, possibly older, caravan.<br />
Newer models have become<br />
heavier over the years. Nearly<br />
all caravans today over 3 metres<br />
long (10ft) have a toilet room,<br />
only shorter ones not having<br />
the necessary space to include<br />
one. If you’re only going to be on<br />
sites where toilets are provided,<br />
this is less important, but if you<br />
will be staying on sites such as<br />
Certificated Locations, then the<br />
Caravan Code requires that you<br />
have your own facilities.<br />
Leisure<br />
It makes sense to tow the shortest,<br />
lightest caravan that suits your needs.<br />
Consider getting a compact caravan<br />
and buying an awning for it. You’ll still<br />
have enough space and you could buy a<br />
4 metre (13 ft) caravan with an awning<br />
for considerably less money than a<br />
5 metre (17 ft) caravan. Attached to<br />
the side of your caravan, which has an<br />
‘awning channel’ built in, you can use it<br />
for extra dining space, as an additional<br />
room for children or visitors to sleep, or<br />
a place for you to sit out on hot summer<br />
nights when the kids have gone to bed.<br />
Consider too that a long caravan will<br />
be more awkward to manoeuvre into<br />
gateways or drives, and sometimes<br />
more difficult to park on and off site,<br />
and to store too.<br />
Single or twin axles?<br />
So which is best?<br />
Only the very largest caravans need<br />
four wheels to bear their fully laden<br />
weight, most caravans being very<br />
adequately supported by one axle.<br />
Some caravan bodies can be fitted<br />
with either to give the buyer choice.<br />
So which is best?<br />
In theory, two tyres on each side of the<br />
caravan give better grip than one and<br />
bring better stability. When parked,<br />
however, the twin axle caravan does not<br />
necessarily stand level and may have<br />
a heavier nose weight than that of a<br />
single axle.<br />
The single axle scores heavily when<br />
manoeuvring on site. The twin’s on-road<br />
benefit of extra grip becomes a liability<br />
when you have to swing the caravan<br />
to hitch up. Unless you’re an expert<br />
in reversing your outfit for spot-on<br />
pitching and 100% accurate at backing<br />
up to reconnect, then stick to a single<br />
axle and spare the heaving! Finally, an<br />
extra axle adds initial cost and weight,<br />
doubles tyre replacement costs, and<br />
requires greater care and maintenance<br />
to achieve braking balance.<br />
Twin axles might seem a better bet,<br />
but think carefully before choosing this<br />
option. Better grip and stability come at<br />
the expense of manoeuvrability.<br />
