Drivers failing to stop
• From page 1
“A large proportion of
the crashes we attend are
at controlled intersections
and are completely
avoidable.”
Police launched their
campaign focusing on motorists
failing to stop at stop
signs in January.
Latest figures show there
were 45 crashes resulting
in injury at intersections in
the district last year.
• From page 1
“We asked them years
ago and asked again when
we presented at a council
meeting last September but
nothing ever happened.”
District council
transportation asset
delivery manager Mark
Chamberlain said they
do not have any plans for
speed limit changes on the
shingle section of Wards
Rd.
“Speed limit changes for
any road are made together
with the roads around it
and taking into account
the regional traffic management
strategy and the national
traffic management
strategy.
“There will be a discussion
with council around
speed limits generally
across the district later this
year which will inevitably
include the speed limit on
all of the shingle roads,” he
Two of the crashes were
fatal, and 11 caused serious
injury.
Sergeant Bayne said the
behaviour is a big problem
in the district.
“There is still a high
volume of motorists in
Selwyn that are not coming
to a complete stop at stop
signs. Road users should
always look left and right,
twice, when stopped at the
intersection.
said.
Sergeant Pickover said
the person caught going
40km/h over the speed limit
automatically lost their
licence for 28 days, and will
pay a $400 fine and receive
50 demerit points.
If the motorist was going
just 10km/h quicker
to 50km/h over the speed
limit they could be summoned
to court for careless,
dangerous or reckless
driving.
“The risk of injury and
harm is quite significant at
that speed. We just want to
get the message out there
that people need to drive
slower on that road.
“It has a lot of crossroads
and if people are caught
speeding down there they
will be issued with an
infringement notice,” Sergeant
Pickover said.
Selwyn Times has been
following the battle of 14
DANGER: A
truck driver had
a lucky escape
after a driver
failing to stop
at a stop sign at
the intersection
of Walkers and
Two Chain Rds
crashed into the
vehicle causing it
to tip over.
“Taking an extra two
seconds at a stop sign to
ensure the road is clear
will not only save lives,
but it will also save you an
instant fine,” he said.
The penalty is a $150 fine
and 20 demerit points.
The campaign will
continue until the end
of summer and has led
to increased monitoring
and police presence at
intersections.
Wards Rd speeding
Wards Rd residents who
have been lobbying for the
road to be sealed between
Charing Cross and Greendale
Rd.
Sergeant Pickover said he
has known the road to have
potholes before which adds
to the danger.
“If they are there and you
aren’t expecting it while
driving, you could lose
control of the vehicle,” he
said.
Mr Prescott, who has
been leading the fight to
have the road sealed, said
there are still potholes on
the road.
“I have seen people
speeding down there myself.
I am glad somebody is
doing something about it.
“The potholes are still
there, it’s horrific. A nonexperienced
driver is going
to come across one and it’s
not fair,” he said.
