The warning comes from fire chiefs and police in the aftermath of the recent hot weather. The fire risk for parts of the region remain high. Fire and Emergency New Zealand is encouraging people to avoid isolated Wayne Hamilton areas that have only one or two entry and exit points, one example being the Yarrs Flat Wildlife Management Reserve near Lake Ellesmere. Said FENZ specialist fire investigator Wayne Hamilton: “Stay away from those areas. People need to be conscious that they are entering high fire danger areas,” he said. All walks in areas with vegetation should be limited to the cool of the morning, Mr Hamilton said. A total fire ban continues in the entire Canterbury region, meaning lighting any fires is strictly prohibited. Cycleway progress BOTH ENDS of the Leeston to Doyleston cycleway are nearly complete. District council transportation asset manager Andrew Mazey said the work within the road reserve at the Leeston end has been completed. Work at the Doyleston end is nearly finished, “The council is in the process of confirming the remaining route of the cycleway which will be constructed off-road for the section between the Leeston and Doyleston ends. “This has largely been agreed and the final steps are under way to do this,” he said. An expected date of completion cannot be provided, Mr Mazey said. “It depends on when the remaining route can be confirmed and when the contract can be let. “Working in the winter period would be problematic so if we are not able to get under way before then, it will be next spring/summer,” he said.
