out. And the drive out to North Canterbury<br />
through the new expanded North Motorway<br />
is a very smooth ride where you can open<br />
up on and put the foot down. <strong>Best</strong> to<br />
wait until after peak hour traffic if you are<br />

<strong>2020</strong> Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza<br />
The Twin Rivers event is hugely popular<br />
and well established on the local motoring<br />
enthusiast’s calendar, catering for all types<br />
of vehicle and a broad range of interests.<br />
The diverse range of vehicles has always<br />
ensured this popular event draws large<br />
numbers every year, and the parade is<br />
always a crowd pleaser. Special sections for<br />
classic trucks and vintage machinery have<br />
been introduced due to popular demand.<br />
Last year’s event was a great success<br />
with over 500 cars attending, but the<br />
organisers, Avonhead Rotary, are hoping<br />
for a repeat of the glorious weather in 2016<br />
which had a record attendance of 650 cars.<br />
Paul Kelly Motor Company is once again<br />
the principal sponsor of the event for<br />
the seventh consecutive year. “The Twin<br />
Rivers event is a great day out on the<br />
Canterbury calendar and we’re delighted to<br />
be supporting the event and Cholmondeley<br />
Children’s Centre again in 2019’” says Ben<br />
Harris, General Manager of PKMC.<br />
This year’s event on Sunday 8th March <strong>2020</strong><br />
will be the 22nd year the event has run.<br />
The entry charge of $15 per display and per<br />
spectator vehicle will go towards providing<br />
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre with a new<br />
van to replace one previously provided by<br />
Avonhead Rotary.<br />
The parade has been extended this year<br />
also by popular request to retain some<br />
affinity with the Christchurch rivers!<br />
Special displays this year include the<br />
ever popular demonstrations and test<br />
drives of electric vehicles, and the ‘Go<br />
Baby Go’ project, a project supported by<br />
Sunrise Rotary which improves mobility<br />
for disabled children, as well as displays of<br />
some very special cars from our sponsors.<br />
Twin Rivers is renowned for its great<br />
atmosphere – those who come along can<br />
enjoy live music, entertainment for all ages,<br />
food and refreshments.<br />
The Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza<br />
is promoting a wider variety of vehicles<br />
and a wider range of attractions and<br />
entertainment, ensuring the day continues<br />
to be enjoyable for young and old alike.<br />
Enthusiasts and owners are invited to<br />
showcase their much loved cars – classic,<br />
vintage, veteran, modern day cars, sports<br />

cars, hot rods and more. Car Clubs and<br />
groups are welcome to set up a dedicated<br />
display area and should contact the<br />
organisers to arrange this. All interesting<br />

Gates open at 10.30am to both the public<br />

Judging starts at 11.30am, with prize giving<br />
held later in the day. Classic Driver are<br />
providing prizes of a one year subscription<br />
for the best of American, Australian,<br />
British, European and Japanese vehicles.<br />
There will also be a ‘<strong>Best</strong> in Show’ prize<br />
donated by Repco.<br />
The event has been run by the Rotary<br />
Club of Avonhead for the past <strong>14</strong> years,<br />
with club members volunteering much of<br />
their time to plan all aspects of the event,<br />
planning the car parade, marshalling on<br />

Security first took the keys to his 2015<br />
Nissan Navara NP-300 STX 4x4 in June<br />
2015, he was one of the first people in<br />
the South Island to own one of these<br />
vehicles. The 2.3lt Twin Turbo Navara<br />
was once one of the highly anticipated<br />
and sought after models when it first<br />
came out on to the market.<br />
The 7 speed Auto Navara was one of<br />
the many popular sought after utes that<br />
came out of the early 2010s boom for<br />
that type of vehicle. With utes going<br />
away from being the workhorse on<br />
the farm to being a urban city ride for<br />
tradies and executives.<br />
Having always been a fan of Nissan<br />
Navara’s (this being his 5th model<br />
that he has owned) – this was an easy<br />
choice for him to buy the Navara<br />
from Cockram’s at the time (Now<br />
Christchurch Nissan).<br />
Being in business 20 years now his first<br />
vehicle was a Subaru Legacy.<br />
With GRC being a fully mobile service<br />
in Canterbury, the Navara doubles as a<br />
mobile workshop and office. As Glenn<br />
goes around installing GPS, stereos<br />
and media units for his clients, it serves<br />
as a fully equipped mobile workshop<br />
enabling him to work from anywhere.<br />

then there is the aMSoiL side of the<br />
business; the official NZ dealer and supplier<br />
of aMSoiL. aMSoiL is an american<br />
company that formulates and packages<br />
synthetic lubricants, additives and fuel<br />
for everything from motorboats to wind<br />
turbines and even racing cars. aMSoiL was<br />
created by albert J. amatuzio - who was<br />
a squadron commander in the US navy<br />
air corps during World War ii. During<br />
his time as a pilot he began researching<br />
synthetic oils, as synthetic lubricants were<br />
used exclusively in jet engines due to the<br />
increased heat and stress loads caused by<br />
supersonic flights. Albert sought to apply<br />
these benefits to automotive engines.<br />
Being the official NZ AMSOIL dealer, of<br />
course Wayne would endorse it – but he<br />
swears by it! and has been with aMSoiL<br />
for 42 years now.<br />
Wayne hasn’t always been directly involved<br />
with vehicle dealerships. He did work for<br />
a year at Begg Engineering, building and<br />
welding front end loaders as well as making<br />
anti roll bars for tractors. after that year<br />
he moved into Yamaha Motorcycles taking<br />
up residence in both gore and timaru,<br />

site in Lincoln road in 1998 on what used<br />
to be one of the local Hutchinson Ford<br />
yards before they merged to form the<br />
larger site on what we know today as team<br />

Skoda Kodiaq RS<br />
There’s no denying sport utility<br />
vehicles are the cars of choice for<br />
today’s buyer. Sales figures globally<br />
are heavily biased in that direction.<br />
The choice is overwhelming, especially<br />
in the mid-size sector. If family or<br />
recreational requirements facilitate the<br />
need for an SUV, but you want something<br />
just a little bit different in your purchase –<br />
something biased towards sporty – then<br />
Skoda has the car for you, the Kodiaq RS.<br />
The Kodiaq has been with us for a year<br />
or two now, and it lands here in three<br />
variants, an entry-level model at $41,990,<br />
a high-grade Sportline at $64,990, and<br />
just recently an RS model has joined<br />
the ranks. The RS sits at $72,990 and is<br />
characterised by its flashy looks, inside<br />
and out, and high power driveline.<br />
Herein lies a secret. Under the bonnet<br />
sits a 2-litre diesel engine, and while you<br />
wouldn’t ordinarily expect diesel to be<br />
the basis for performance, you have to<br />
remember that Skoda, in the past has<br />
had many sports models with diesel<br />
engines, and I can report that is a concept<br />
the company does very well, even in<br />
motorsport.<br />
In the Kodiaq, the turbocharged fourcylinder<br />
unit pumps out 176kW and a<br />
feisty 500Nm at the bottom end. The<br />
latter is the ingredient that makes the RS<br />
so special, not only is the specific output<br />
high, maximum torque is available from<br />
1750rpm to 2500rpm, which is the area<br />
where the engine wants to constantly<br />
work.<br />
As a result, there is dynamic engine<br />
performance, mid-range boost will offer<br />
a 4.2sec overtaking time (80-120km/h),<br />
and an off-the-mark time of 7sec to make<br />
100km/h from a standstill.<br />
Even if you aren’t in a hurry, there is a<br />
constant willingness from the engine that<br />
tantalises the driver, and if you take into<br />
account there is manufactured exhaust<br />
sound which throbs constantly, the RS is<br />
hard to drive without wanting to give it<br />
some freedom.<br />
There are several drive modes, and<br />
depending on which is activated the<br />
exhaust sound can be encouraged or<br />
left in a more subtle tone. The Kodiaq is<br />
also a pretty useful off-roader, there are<br />
modes which channel power more usefully<br />
through the four-wheel-drive platform.<br />
There is also another element which adds<br />
spice to the driveline, power is channeled<br />
through a seven-speed direct shift<br />
transmission, and this configuration is one<br />
of my favourites.<br />
DSG is more of a manual-type gearbox,<br />
although there are only two foot pedals;<br />
the beauty of this is the lack of load<br />
through the transmission, engine power<br />
is mostly unimpeded, and with quick<br />
shifts the feeling of performance is well<br />
enhanced.<br />
I took the test car through some of the<br />
tight, hilly roads close to Sheffield, and<br />
although the weather had closed in and<br />
the roads were greasy I felt at ease in the<br />
RS.<br />
Grip in the first instance is supplied by<br />
sticky Pirelli Scorpion tyres (235/45 x<br />
20in) and they offer substantial steering<br />
feel along with direct turn-in.<br />
It has to be remembered the Kodiaq<br />
has traditional SUV handling, it sits high<br />
at almost 1.7m, and with long-travel<br />
suspension it isn’t as nimble as a sedan,<br />
however, the spring and damper rates<br />
arrest body movement well, along with the<br />
parameters that allow for high occupant<br />
comfort. You’d expect nothing less<br />
from this Czech Republic manufacturer<br />
which has drawn significant build quality<br />
direction from the Volkswagen group.<br />
Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects<br />
the RS offers is the point-to-point ability, it<br />
will lunge out of corner and blast without<br />
lag through the paddle shift system to the<br />

point where speed needs to be chiseled<br />
off, high grade brakes take care of that<br />
and with the grip naturally associated<br />
with four-wheel-drive the RS feels well<br />
attached to the road, it is dynamic and<br />
forceful when asked to respond.<br />
This is all from a car which has a vastly<br />
different role to play as well, it is the<br />
quintessential mid-size seven-seater that<br />
also looks after its occupants in terms of<br />
fitment and specification and safety. At<br />
$73k it needs to be well appointed, and I<br />
can report it leaves little to chance.<br />
It also has fuel economy on its side, Skoda<br />
claims a combined cycle average of<br />
7.7-litres per 100km (36mpg).<br />
It takes a very special car to win the New<br />
Zealand Motoring Writer’s Guild Car of the<br />
Year Award and the Kodiaq took honours<br />
for 2017.<br />
Obviously, that recognition speaks for<br />
itself, the RS adds another ingredient into<br />
the equation, it certainly captured my<br />
attention with its performance, economy<br />
yet practicality all thrown in for good<br />
measure.

Challenge<br />
Motorcyclists, competitors and<br />
enthusiasts increase Invercargill’s<br />
population by hundreds, if not<br />
thousands, during the Burt Munro<br />
Challenge writes Janette Gellatly.<br />
This year is no different, despite<br />
the weather gods’ best attempts to<br />
deter them with extensive flooding<br />
throughout Southland earlier this week.<br />
Since its inception in 2006, the rally has<br />
grown into one of Australasia’s largest<br />
all-round motorcycle rallies.<br />
Hosted by the Southland Motorcycle<br />
Club, the event opened with the New<br />
Zealand Hill Climb Championships on<br />
Thursday which had more than 70<br />
entries over eight classes from classic to<br />
modern motorcycles, at Bluff Hill.<br />
Bluff promotions and publicity<br />
officer Lindsay Beer said it had been<br />
a "tremendous day, with a fantastic<br />
atmosphere" and competition numbers<br />
were "good".<br />
In regards to the challenging weather,<br />
which resulted in many travellers being<br />
delayed or having to detour, SMCC<br />
president Andy Underhay said "Mother<br />
Nature had been both cruel and kind to<br />
us" this year.<br />
"The Bluff Hill Climb was fantastic," he<br />
said, "with beautiful weather and fast<br />
times".<br />
"Both the public and riders turned up in<br />
force", which had been in doubt because<br />
of the flooding throughout the province.<br />
"Despite the flooding, delays and<br />
detours, 95% stuck with it and made it<br />
through.’’<br />
The twilight drag racing at Teretonga<br />
Park, near Invercargill, which was<br />
introduced to the challenge two years<br />
ago, also took place on Thursday, and<br />
also went "very well", Underhay said.<br />
Because of tidal conditions, the New<br />
Zealand Beach Racing Championships<br />
along Oreti Beach began at 5.30pm<br />
yesterday with pre-race entertainment<br />
by a World War 2 Russian Yak 3<br />
V-12 engine fighter plane, Full Noise,<br />
performing low-level aerobatics.<br />
With the strong winds and high tide, the<br />
available sand to race on was limited,<br />
causing a "tight course", beach race<br />
organiser Craig Hyde said.<br />
Entries in the 11 classes were full and a<br />
late clubmans class was added to the<br />
beach race this year.<br />

Today, there will be the Teretonga Sprint<br />
Races and Oreti Park Speedway. The<br />
action-packed Invercargill Street Races<br />
will be held around the Bill Richardson<br />
Dr and Arena Ave business park<br />
tomorrow.<br />
Street race organiser Garry Jamieson<br />
said everything was "ready to go".<br />
"We start putting the course together<br />
today [Saturday]. The normal roads<br />
are closed to the public at 1pm and<br />
transformed into a street race."

Classic Japanese<br />
Motorcycle Show<br />
The CJMG was formed in 2007<br />
after two riders on their restored<br />
vintage Japanese motorcycles,<br />
passed each other on the road one<br />
weekend. Both stopped to say hello and<br />
discuss their hobby and passion which<br />
was finding, restoring and riding these<br />
old bikes.<br />
An advertisement was then placed in<br />
a newspaper enquiring after interested<br />
like-minded enthusiasts which was very<br />
successful. The group now has many<br />
members that meet socially and also<br />
ride monthly. There are also a number<br />
of members who regularly go off-road<br />
to places such as Molesworth Station<br />
and other more isolated backcountry<br />
areas. Annual four or five day road<br />
tours are also undertaken. There<br />
are affiliate groups in Auckland and<br />
Dunedin.<br />
The group will be holding their fifth<br />
Classic Japanese Motorcycle Show on<br />
Sunday the 15th of March <strong>2020</strong> at the<br />
Woolston Club Bowling Pavilion. The<br />
motorcycles on show are beautifully<br />
restored and in a lot of cases restored<br />
to "factory new" using decades old<br />
stock parts hunted out and found<br />
around the world by way of the Internet.<br />
These shows are well patronised as the<br />
show is the only one in New Zealand<br />
dedicated solely to vintage Japanese<br />
motorcycles. Entries come from as<br />
far away as Dunedin and visitors even<br />
coming from Auckland. The motorcycles<br />
are grouped under the four marques:<br />
Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha.<br />
Also grouped are 50-125 cc, Trail and<br />
Barn Find. Trophies are awarded to<br />
all groups and also <strong>Best</strong> in Show by<br />
popular vote. Visitors will be able to<br />
view such notable and ground breaking<br />
motorcycles of the day such as the<br />
Kawasaki Z1, Kawasaki H1 Mach III and<br />
H2, Honda CB750 right down through to<br />
the smaller models like the T125 Suzuki<br />
Stinger and 50cc AC50 Suzuki Maverick<br />
and Honda Cub.<br />
The organisers and members of the<br />
CJMG receive great feedback from<br />
attendees. Many visitors relating that<br />
they used to own a particular model<br />
or that their brother had one, crashed<br />
one or should never have sold it etc.<br />
And they love to tell their motorcycling<br />
stories to other interested parties.<br />
These old motorbikes are a key for a<br />
lot of people that unlocks a flood of<br />
memories, particularly of their free and<br />
happy younger days and their love of<br />
Japanese motorcycles.<br />
Profits from this show and previous<br />
shows have been donated to charities.<br />
