Canty Country earn
cup challenge
• By Jacob Page
CANTERBURY Country have
earned a Hawke Cup Challenge
against Hamilton next
weekend after beating
Marlborough by five
wickets in their zone
final in Blenheim.
Sefton pace bowler
Jed Roberts took five
for 63 from 14.5 overs
to help skittle the hosts
for 186 after Canterbury
Country won an
important toss.
The victory reversed
the round-robin result between
the two teams from a fortnight
ago.
Canterbury Country last challenged
for the Hawke Cup two
seasons ago when they came up
short against Counties.
Canterbury Country last held
the Hawke Cup in the 2014/2015
season.
An unbeaten 70 from wicket
keeper Will Hamilton and 64
from veteran Shanan Stewart
helped Canterbury Country gain
a 131-run lead on the first innings
as they made 317 all out and
recovered somewhat after being
110 for five.
Marlborough entered the final
day at 113/2 but they lost their
last eight wickets for 109 runs
Jed Roberts
which means the visitors needed
91 for victory.
While wickets fell steadily in
the chase, Rupert Young’s 46
helped Canterbury
Country earn the win.
Canterbury Country
coach Michael Sharpe
praised Roberts for his
swing bowling in the
first innings and his
two crucial wickets in
the second.
“Jed swung the ball
for the entire first innings
and then got the
first wicket for us on
day three in the second innings
which gave us a lot of momentum,”
he said.
Sharpe said his batsmen were
able to build partnerships when
they needed them most which
was an improvement on the
previous encounter between the
two teams.
He said he would discuss with
Canterbury Cricket the possibility
of them releasing domestic
players like Will Williams, Fraser
Sheat, Henry Shipley and Jack
Boyle, all of whom will be in contention
to play four-day cricket
for the province.
Rhys Mariu who has just
returned from the under-19
World Cup is another possible
selection recall.
Lincoln still in T20 hunt
SPORT
• By Jacob Page
LINCOLN ARE the only Selwyn
cricket team in with a chance of
making the Canterbury Country
twenty20 final on March 6 with
one round to go on Saturday.
Five teams have a chance of
making the decider at Rangiora’s
Mainpower Oval.
Oxford lead the competition
on 20 points, four points ahead
of Sefton, with Lincoln and Cheviot
a further two points back.
Southbrook will need to win
their final game and hope results
go their way to make the top two
for the straight final.
Both matches at Southbrook
Domain were abandoned after
wet weather on Thursday hampered
preparations on the pitch.
It meant Southbrook played no
cricket on Saturday.
The first match at Dudley Park
between Leeston-Southbridge
and Cheviot was also abandoned
for the same reason.
With their first match abandoned
and points shared, Lincoln
got a much needed win over
Sefton in the afternoon.
Lincoln chased down their target
of 121 against Sefton by five
wickets and nine balls to spare.
Three wickets from Arthur
Paterson and two from Jeremy
TOP PERFORMANCE: Lincoln’s Jeremy Benton took two wickets
and then made 39 with the bat to help his team beat Sefton by
five wickets and keep their Canterbury Country twenty20 final
hopes alive on Saturday.
Benton restricted Sefton.
Then Benton hit 39 and Paterson
38 in the run chase to see the
team home.
It was a great weekend for
Oxford who won both their
matches, first against Darfield
by 30 runs after they were able
to defend 118 thanks to Mitch
Power’s five for 17.
They then ended Leeston-
Southbridge’s final hopes with a
four wicket win.
Darfield lost both their games to
Cheviot and Oxford respectively,
SELWYN TIMES
while Weedons lost their morning
encounter with Sefton and their
afternoon fixture against Southbrook
was abandoned.
The final round of games
is a ‘closest neighbour’ round
with Lincoln hosting Weedons,
Darfield welcoming Leeston-
Southbridge, Cheviot travelling
to Oxford and Southbrook hosting
Sefton.
Points: Oxford 20, Sefton
16, Lincoln, 14, Cheviot 14,
Southbrook 12, Weedons 10,
Leeston-Southbridge 6, Darfield 4.
