A NEW shopping complex is
already posing a major problem
for nearby residents – they can’t
get out of their driveways safely.
Residents say the new
Northlink shopping complex
on Langdons Rd, Papanui,
has resulted in more traffic.
Combined with more vehicles
now parking on the street, the
lack of vision exiting driveways
has caused safety issues.
Resident John Williams said:
“The new Langdons Rd shopping
complex has and will create
on-street parking to a degree
which conspires to create a visual
hazard for residents exiting their
properties by motor vehicle.
“If a resident has an accident
leaving their driveway they will be
at fault for driving into oncoming
traffic, this is not acceptable.”

Damaged graves could cost family

The revolution

Lynette King is shocked by the
state of the grave sites of her
relatives.
Mrs King’s great grandmother,
great grandfather and two of
their sons, one who died in
World War 1, are buried at
Bromley Cemetery and their
gravestones are damaged.
Mrs King said her son in law
Steve Berry is a concrete layer
and he wants to do the repairs
for free himself.
The city council have said
this can’t happen and Mrs
King’s family will have to pay
a city council-approved contractor
if they want the graves
repaired.
Mr Berry has installed headstones
at Linwood Cemetery and
Harewood Memorial Gardens
and Crematorium in the past
and estimates going through a
city council-approved will cost
about $5000.
Said Mr Berry: “I do a bit of
work for them [the city council]
and when they do get contractors
to do work it is I’d say
extravagant but they may not say
that.”
Said city council community
parks manager Al Hardy: “Only
an approved contractor for monumental
work may undertake work
associated with any monument
(including concrete kerbing or
covering) in a council cemetery.”
Said Mrs King: “I didn’t know
that we had great grandparents
at Bromley Cemetery so we went
and had a look and the grave was
disgusting. It had all fallen over,
the headstone was off, there had
been nothing done to it.
“They [the city council] won’t
let us tidy that grave and yet it’s

These people came from Ireland,
came over on a boat . . . started
businesses, they had 12 children.
They have to be respected. If I
had a grave and it was in that
sort of repair I’d be disappointed
in my family that they didn’t
at least tidy it up and make it
respectable so people could read
who they were in that grave.
That’s all we want.”

of a new water pipe down

along with road changes. This
work will allow people to pass
through the area, provide safe
access to schools, and add safer
walking and cycling routes due
to additional traffic from the
Christchurch Northern Corridor
nearing completion.

White lines ‘a waste of time’

of close to 600 vehicle trips per
hour when development is fully
completed according to resource
consents.
Mr Williams wrote to the
Waipapa/Papanui-Innes
Community Board on behalf of
residents in neighbouring units
expressing their concerns.
THis was due to an increased
volume of cars and vans
parking on Langdons Rd which
were often parked too close to
entranceways.
Residents asked for the
installation of yellow lines to
prevent other vehicles from
parking near driveways. After
being informed by the council
that potential yellow lines would
not be possible, they have since
installed white lines to remind
drivers of where they can legally
park.
According to Mr Williams, the
white lines have since faded and
have largely been ignored calling
it “a waste of time.”
Said Mr Williams: “Last year,
an elderly lady’s car was written
off leaving the premises as she
had a lack of vision leaving the
driveway.”
Since the initial concerns were
raised, the city council “has
made no contact with
us whatsoever, they fobbed
us off with no replies, no
information and nothing was
done.”
Because the hazard was
brought to the attention of
the council, nearby residents
believed they were obliged
to eliminate or minimise the
hazard before someone was
seriously injured.

He said any vehicle parked
within 1m of an entrance can
be dealt with by enforcement
agencies without the need for
broken yellow lines.
Said a city council
spokesperson: “Traffic
management was an important
consideration in planning for the
Northlink Shopping Centre. A
resource consent was approved
on the basis that changes to
the traffic environment can be
managed as required.
“Once construction works
are complete, council staff
will monitor impacts on the
roads.”
Pupils encouraged to
ride or walk to school
SCHOOLS IN the north west
are showing their support for
combating climate change by
taking part in Walk or Wheel to
School Day on March 4.
A number of schools will be
participating, such as Harewood,
Roydvale, Waimairi, Papanui and
Belfast schools.
The city council is encouraging
families to leave their cars at
home that day and walk, cycle,
scoot or skate to school instead.
Said city council transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas:
“Transport accounts for more
than half of the city’s greenhouse
gas emissions. If we can get people
using their cars less and active
modes of travel more, it could
make a significant difference to
our carbon footprint.”
“It has been proven that active
travel to school can increase
children’s concentration by up to
four hours. Studies also show that
children who travel actively to
school have better spatial awareness
and more road sense than
those who are driven.”
“Walking or wheeling to school
has environmental, financial and
health benefits so we’re hoping
that all schools in Christchurch
will support this initiative. If
it does not suit schools to do

Young track cyclist on the road to Cairo

AT THE beginning of 2019
Charlotte Spurway made a bold
decision to give track cycling a
go.
One year later, the year 13
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student
has been selected in the
13-strong New Zealand track cycling
team for the world championships
in Egypt in August.
This is the first time the UCI
junior track world championships
will be held in the Middle
East at the newly-constructed
velodrome in Cairo.
The 16-year-old said it all happened
“pretty quickly,” but was
excited for the new challenge
ahead.
“I was so excited when I found
out, especially being able to work
with the team over the year coming.
We all get on really well,”
she said.
“It will definitely be a new experience
for all of us, and probably
the first time we’ll all ride
our bikes in a place like that.”
Charlotte has always had an
avid interest in sports, coming
from a family that loved to
travel, surf and dive.
She moved to Christchurch
nine years ago, originally from
Brisbane.
“I’ve done sport for as long as
I can remember, it’s just been
a part of me. And then when I
came to Rangi in year 9 I started
school cycling,” said Charlotte.
“I starting doing weekly racing
and I just love the sport, there’s a
really cool community in it. And
then in the beginning of last year
I decided to try out track cycling
and since then it’s brought me to
where I am today.”
Charlotte was one of six
Cantabrians to make the team
with Jenna Borthwick (Lincoln
High School), Mikaela Grant
(Villa Maria), Laurence Pithie
(ex-Christchurch Boys’ High
School), Ryan McLeod (CBHS),
and Sebastian Lipp (Catholic
Cathedral College) also selected
based on excellent performances
at Oceania championships in
October and New Zealand
championships last month.
Said Charlotte: “It’s really cool
that six of us are Cantabrians,
especially when we’ve only got
an outdoor, concrete track here

other places with indoor centres.”
Denton Park Oval is the city’s
only velodrome. In New Zealand
there are two indoor velodromes
located in Invercargill and
Cambridge. Plans of an indoor
centre for Christchurch have
been discussed for years, but to
no avail.
“I can’t imagine what Canterbury
can achieve if we get an
indoor velodrome.”
Charlotte trains 13 hours a
week, while juggling school
work, having a social life and
other responsibilities and
obligations, but she does not let
the pressure get to her.
“I think it’s quite manageable.
We’ve all got time in our day
as long as you’re getting down
and doing it as soon as you can
and staying on task, especially
with the hours you’re given at
school.”
The young cyclist hopes to join
the elite programme after high
school and has the potential to
head to worlds again in 2021
while still being an U19 rider.
But in the meantime, more hard
work is in store.
“Remembering your support
network is always really
important. I couldn’t have got
to where I am today without
the support of my family,
friends, the Christchurch school
cycling and Canterbury track
communities,’’ Charlotte said.

academic scholarship awards.
Sarah Lawrence and Rosetta
Brown have been named
amongst the Top Subject
Scholars for 2019. Sarah was
named top scholar for music and
Rosetta for printmaking.
The New Zealand Qualifications
Authority Top Scholarship
Awards recognised the students
who achieved the highest mark
in their subject out of all students
who sat the scholarship exam.
Rangi Ruru’s assistant principal
Juliet Collins said the awards
were regarded among the most
prestigious secondary school
academic awards in the country.
“Topping New Zealand in
these subjects is a tremendous
tribute to the commitment and
dedication of the girls and their
teachers,” she said.
“At Rangi Ruru, we encourage
all of our girls to do the very

try, and these two have certainly

in liquidation

A RESTAURANT owner facing
worker exploitation charges has
had four of his businesses put into
liquidation.
Last month it was revealed
Coriander’s Ethnic Indian Restaurants
owner Amar Deep Singh
is facing charges of exploiting
his workers, whom the Labour
Inspectorate concluded were
systematically underpaid and
abused.
Last week, four businesses
under Singh’s name were put into
liquidation by Inland Revenue.
These are Coriander’s Ltd, Jeet
Holdings Ltd, Jeet Holdings No 2
Ltd and Jeet Holdings No 8 Ltd.
The application is due to be
heard in the High Court at
Christchurch on March 5. Coriander’s
restaurants have operated
in the wider Christchurch area for
the past 12 years, with three restaurants
currently operating – one
in the central city, one in Upper
Riccarton and one in Rolleston.
In relation to the worker exploitation
charges, the Inspectorate is
seeking recovery of pay, a declaration
of breach, penalties and a
banning order.
The charges against Singh
are scheduled to be heard in
the Employment Court in
Christchurch on May 19 and 20.
The restaurants are still open.

doctors comprises Dr Amrit
Riat, who has recently joined
the practice from Britain, Dr
Don Ponnamperuma, Dr
George Dehn and Dr Beth
Shore.
Dr Riat brings with her a
wide range of experience and
knowledge, while Dr Shore also
holds adiploma in child health
so particularly enjoys working
with children and families.
With two female doctors,
women’s health is afocus for
the centre.
They offer full women’s
health checks at $80 for the
45­minute appointment, as well
as family planning and
contraception.
Dr Dehn and Dr
Ponnamperuma both have a
special interest in
musculoskeletal medicine and
are experienced in treating the
aches and pains that can affect
muscles, bones and joints as we
age, or through injuries
sustained at work or playing
sport.
The Silverstream Medical
Centre, established in
September 2018, is fresh, bright
and welcoming, with a
comfortable waiting area, while
the friendly doctors, nurses and
administration staff ensure
everyone feels at ease.
The centre welcomes new
patients, with doctor visits free
for under­14s. Prescriptions
can be requested and
appointments booked through
its website.
Adjacent to the medical
centre is the Silverstream
Kaiapoi Pharmacy, offering a
full range of pharmaceutical
services.
Pharmacists Elena
Rimbovska and Georgia
McLean, who own and operate
the pharmacy, see their role as
one of the “puzzle pieces” in
the integrated health care of
customers.
Working in conjunction with
the customer’s doctor, they
focus on optimising medicines
for maximum benefit, by
advising customers on the best
way and best times to take
them.
For those who take multiple
medications, or who don’t feel
like they are getting the most
from their medication, afree
medicine review with a
pharmacist can be especially
helpful, Elena says.
“Managing medicines can be
quite overwhelming so we
encourage patients or family
members to talk to us if they
have any issues or questions,
and make the most of their local
pharmacy.”
Listening to patients’
concerns is important for the
pharmacists, and as experts in
medicine they are able to
provide afull counselling
service, with aprivate
consultation room available.
They also provide wound
care and dressing, and will
recommend other
professionals if more
specialised treatment is
required.
Both pharmacists say
supplements are now being
incorporated as part of a
healthy lifestyle, with more
people taking them.
“It’s great to see that people
are becoming interested in
natural health to prevent
health conditions, and age
well,” Elena says.
Total Health Physio &
Podiatry, located on the other
side of the medical centre,
specialises in manual, handson
physiotherapy and exercise
rehabilitation for clients of all
ages.
There are three senior­level
qualified physiotherapists on
the staff –Teresa Hoult,
Brigette Higinbottom and
Brittany Peacock.
“Having three
physiotherapists means we
have adiverse skill base,”
Teresa says.
Joint mobilisation and soft
tissue massage are applied to
help patients return to full
fitness after surgery or injury,
with exercise­based
rehabilitation an important
part of the process.
Treatment is tailored to suit
the individual patient’s needs
and sessions last for afull halfhour,
allowing the physiotherapist
to spend time with the
patient, which Teresa believes
is very important.
“Close working relationships
with the Silverstream Medical
Centre and the pharmacy, plus
specialists, means we can
ensure client management is
maximised,” she says.
Acupuncture treatment is
also available.
Podiatry services are offered
at the clinic every Monday and
Wednesday by qualified
podiatrist Corrie Hoult.
He provides general foot
care, including minor surgery,
and also makes orthotics, which
are specifically tailored to
individual needs.
Triton Audiology services are
available on Thursdays at the
clinic, with the audiologist and
ear nurse alternating
fortnightly. Free hearing tests
and ear wax removal is
provided by Triton.
Total Health Physio &
Podiatry also runs Pilates
classes, which are proving very
popular, Teresa says.
Pilates enhances core
strength and flexibility,
improving general well­being,
as well as being auseful tool for
injury rehabilitation and
prevention.

MEDBURY SCHOOL had plenty
to celebrate in the intermediate
section at the national secondary
schools’ triathlon championships
in Wanaka.
Oli Aitken won the under-13
boys category. He completed the
200m swim 5km bike and 2km
run in 24min 11sec.
Fellow Medbury competitor
Henry Hiatt was fifth.
Oli and Henry combined to
win the tag-team mixed intermediate
title.
Medbury finished first and
second in the tag-team male
intermediate event with Jake
Bennett, Jackson Grace, Jack
Wyllie and Otis Wheeler being
victorious and Nisal Pathirana,
Jack Howard, Cohnor Walsh and
Louis Fogarty finishing second.
The school was then named
overall male points champions
for 2020.
Several other Canterbury athletes
did well at the annual event.
CBHS’ Will Allott was seventh
and Cathedral Grammar’s Dardy
Harrington was 10th.
St Andrew’s College’s Amber
De Wit was eighth.
Christ’s College’s Art Aitken
finished second in the under-14
boys race. His time of 37min
42sec was 72sec behind winner

won the girls under-14 race, competing
the 300m swim, 10km

silverware in the intermediate grades of the national
secondary schools’ triathlon championships in Wanaka.

triathlon championships and
beat home many of the boys in

The 15-year-old beat 27 other
girls to cross the finish line
completing the 300m swim,
10km cycle and 3km run in
37min 05sec last Sunday in
Wanaka.
Morgan was 10th overall out
of 55 boys and girls in her agegroup.
Morgan competed the 300m
swim in 5min 22sec and then
powered into the bike leg where
she completed the 10km in
17min 28sec.
Her 3km run took her 11min
14sec.
She beat St Kentigern College’s
Sophie Spencer by 16sec with
Mt Aspiring College’s Hannah
Prosser a further 8sec back in
third.

BISHOPDALE’S KRIS Wilder
has had a whirlwind code-hop to
Australian Rules.
After being encouraged by a
friend to try the sport last year
to improve his rugby fitness, the
27-year-old played five games
for the University Cougars in
Christchurch and was then
selected in the New Zealand AFL
draft in November.
He has played two games for
the Western Crows in the national
competition in Auckland, playing
full-forward and kicking six goals.
The four team competition
sees Wilder travel to North Harbour
Stadium each weekend for
the 10-week competition.
“I played five games for the
Canterbury University Cougars
and obviously did enough to be
on the radar for the draft.
“It cost $600 to enter it but if
you get drafted that covers your
10 weeks of flights to Auckland
and your meals, kit, warm-ups
and ice baths etc.
“It’s quite professional in that
sense, it’s like the Mitre 10 Cup

going professional was a longshot,
not only for him but most
of the New Zealand players.
“My goal is to make the New
Zealand Academy team at the
end of the season because there
will be an Aussie team that will
tour here and I’d like to test myself
against them,” he said.
“The difference in standard
here compared to Australia is
huge – Aussie kids smash us and
I don’t think it will be about the
money for me at this point.”
He said he planned to play senior
rugby this season and bring
up 100 games for the Lincoln
premier team.
“This has taken me a lot
further than I thought it would
considering I just wanted to do it
to be a fitter, better rugby player.
“It is a fast game with a
lot of running and a heap of
athleticism and I’m keen to just
see where I end up with it.”

One-pot wonders to keep the summer vibe going

With the recent resurgence
of warmer temperatures
there’s no need to
prematurely put the
outdoor furniture away just
yet. Keep that summer vibe
going with these crowdpleasing
one-pot wonders
Slow-cooker pulled pork
Serves 6
Ingredients
2 onions, halved and sliced
1 Tbsp smoked paprika
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp garlic salt
2 tsp sea salt flakes
2 Tbsp Dijon mustard
3 Tbsp red wine vinegar
2 Tbsp tomato purée
2 Tbsp soft light brown sugar
1.5kg boneless pork shoulder,
skin and excess fat removed
To serve
Soft white rolls
Coleslaw
Sliced red onions
Sliced gherkins
Directions
Heat the slow cooker to high.
Put the onions in the bottom of
the slow cooker.
Mix together the spices, salts,
mustard, vinegar, tomato purée
and sugar. Rub all over the pork
then sit on top of the onions.
Cook for 8 hours. Remove the
pork and shred into chunks. Mix
in 4-5 Tbsp of cooking liquid
from the slow cooker.
Serve in buns with coleslaw,
sliced red onions and gherkins, if
you like.
Halloumi and vegetable
tray-bake
Ingredients
4 courgettes, cut into small
chunks
1 red onion, cut into slim wedges
3 large garlic cloves, skins left on
3 Tbsp olive oil
300g cherry tomatoes
250g halloumi, sliced
CROWD-PLEASERS: (Left) Slow-cooker pulled pork,
(above) halloumi and vegetable tray-bake
¼ tsp cumin seeds
Dried chilli flakes a few pinches
(optional)
To serve
Flatbreads
Hummus
Hot sauce (optional)
Directions
Heat the oven to 200 deg C/180
(fan-forced). Toss the courgettes,
onion and garlic with the olive
oil and tip into a large, shallow
baking dish. Season well and
roast for 10min.
Stir in the cherry tomatoes
and sit the halloumi slices on
top. Sprinkle over the cumin
seeds and chilli flakes, if using.
Cook for another 15min until the
tomatoes start to burst and release
juice, and the halloumi is turning
golden.
Squeeze the garlic cloves out
of their skins and mash into the
oil and juices in the baking dish,
stirring it in. Spoon everything
onto plates and serve with soft
flatbreads and hummus or hot
sauce, if you like.
