A LOOKOUT spot on the Port
Hills has become a dumping
ground.
It started off with smaller litter
like cans, bottles and fast food
waste being left in and around a
car park at the top of Mt Pleasant
Rd, near the intersection with
Summit Rd.
But now, the scale of the
problem has escalated, with
people leaving large piles of
household rubbish and building
waste, says a resident.
Dmitri Rechkunov lives
on Summit Rd and he has
been spending a lot of time
picking up rubbish within a
radius of about 500m around
the area where there are no
public bins.
“I’ve called the city council a
number of times asking them
to put a rubbish bin on the
intersection of Mt Pleasant Rd
and Summit Rd,’’ he said.
Dmitri Rechkunov has a very good point
about rubbish being dumped on the Port
Hills (see page 1).
He lives on Summit Rd and he’s getting
rightly frustrated with people leaving their
rubbish at a lookout spot near the junction
with Mt Pleasant Rd.
But it’s not the only place on the Port Hills where people going
for walks or parking up are leaving their trash.
The Port Hills are an amazing resource, right on the back door
of Christchurch with a web of tracks to walk, run and cycle.
There are places you can park up and look at the incredible views
across the city to the Pacific and out to Southern Alps, and back
down to Lyttelton and the peninsula.
So why spoil it?
Group says estuary pathway
will not harm birdlife
• By Matt Slaughter
THE CHRISTCHURCH 360
Trail group says birdlife will not
be harmed if a pathway is built
along the western edge of the
Avon-Heathcote Ihutai Estuary.
This is based on the final draft
of a Boffa Miskell report commissioned
by the city council
that says: “Actual levels of
disturbance to birds as a result
of the pathway constitute very
low, low or moderate ecological
magnitudes of effect.
“Opportunities to avoid and
minimise these effects are available.”
The trail is 135km so far and
includes walking tracks around
the city’s radius. The section beside
the estuary is one of the last
needed to complete the trail.
Trail chairwoman Judith Millar
said the pathway proposal
includes measures which will
protect birds from threats such
as pedestrians, cyclists and dogs.
However, Avon Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai Trust chairman
Kit Doudney said the trust “absolutely
refute that.”
The trust and Redcliffs
Residents Association are
concerned building the pathway
PROTECTION: Christchurch 360 Trail chairwoman Judith Millar
says science shows birdlife will be safe if a pathway is built
in the proposed area beside the
Bromley Oxidation Ponds will
put godwits and about 100 other
bird species which use the estuary
in jeopardy.
Mr Doudney believes the
pathway proposal goes against
the estuary’s status as part of the
East Asian-Australasian Flyway,
which is supposed to protect
birds that use it.
He wants the pathway built
further away from the estuary
and the city council is investigating
this option.
But Mrs Millar said the current
proposal includes measures to
stop birds from being harmed.
“The [city] council is investigating
mitigation procedures
to deal with the issues that the
estuary trust people raised
and we agree that there should
be measures. We think there
should be screening, we think
that a low barbed wire between
the trail and the pond [estuary]
levee is all that’s necessary.”
Said city council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge: “The pathway
would be flanked by a security
fence several metres to the
pond side of the path, and screen
planting along the estuary
shore. Planting along most of
the estuary shore already
exists; the project is to provide
screening of most of the remaining
gaps.”
Mr Rutledge said additional
protective measures, which
may also be considered include
“educational signage promoting
the site values, dog exclusion
signage, regular monitoring of
compliance, track closure at certain
times” and “vehicle barriers
at entry points.”
Mr Doudney said these measures
won’t work and birds will
suffer.
“Since last winter, we’ve got
new data from a student who
was working over the summer
on bird disturbance. There will
be a massive impact.”
No easy task
narrowing
down squad
• From page 1
New Zealand coach Kiri Shaw
said it had not been an easy
process to narrow down the
squad.
“We are very excited
about this team after a
lengthy but thorough selection
process.
“The opportunity for squad
members to play in a number
of tournaments where they
have been exposed to a higher
level of play and compete against
more experienced women has
been an invaluable exercise,’’
Shaw said.
“Just as important were
observations made at under-18
nationals.
“We have learnt a lot about
players as well as the things we
want to implement in terms of
the team culture we want in
place for this Junior White Sox
team.
“This was an extremely tough
team to select. But it was a good
problem to have. Consistency,
versatility, attitude and
improvement were the basis of
our final 16 women roster for the
World Cup,” she said.
‘Fly-tippers’ could face prosecution
• From page 1
“I still pick up bottles from my
property, people sit on the intersection
drinking beer and throw
them over the fence.”
He said there are a lot of people
walking on Summit Rd who pick
up rubbish and ask to use his
rubbish bin.
“It’s totally fine that [visitors]
use my bin, but you can see how
many people worry about it.”
City council manager of city
streets maintenance Mark Pinner
said staff are aware of the
problem.
“We have received three reports
in the past three days. Two
of these were to report builder
waste and one for household
waste.”
Before this, he said staff
had only received and actioned
only one report in the past 12
months.
“There are no public bins in
the area, and waste, once identified,
is typically removed within
two days.”
He said this type of dumping
is classed as ‘fly-tipping’ and
individuals face prosecution if
caught. Fines range between
$100 and $400 depending on
how much is dumped and what it
contains.
“We encourage the public to
report any such issues. If people
can identify anyone responsible,
we request they provide as much
information as possible so that
we can follow up with them.”
Mt Pleasant is not the only
place which has been treated as a
tip this year.
Bay Harbour News reported in
February that rubbish had been
spilling out of bins at Taylors
Mistake Beach onto the ground
and in January, there were issues
with people dumping green
waste at public areas in Diamond
Harbour.
‘It’s totally fine that
[visitors] use my bin,
but you can see how
many people worry
about it.’
Twins prepare for new art exhibition
MT PLEASANT twins Bella and
Demeter Kenton-Dau had their first
exhibition in Diamond Harbour at
just seven years old.
Now, 10 years on, they are preparing
to launch their new exhibition
at the Pumanawa Gallery in the
Christchurch Arts Centre on March
16.
Through New Eyes features the
latest work from Bella and Demeter
who will use the funds raised
through the sale of their art to travel
to Europe later in the year.
TWIN TALENT: Bella and
Demeter Kenton-Dau will use
funds from the sale of their art to
travel to Europe and to donate
to their favourite long-standing
charity, DogWatch.
A portion of sales will also be
donated to their favourite longstanding
charity DogWatch.
The exhibition runs for a week
and original canvases, prints and
gift cards from their work will be
for sale.
There will be wine to celebrate the
launch at 6pm. Space is limited to
the first 70 people who arrive.
If you take along a picture of your
favourite pet, Bella and Demeter
will offer personalised commissions.
With paintings now in collections
in Australia, France, and the United
States, Bella and Demeter are
another example of New Zealand’s
vibrant art community.
Readers respond to last
week’s article about
Redcliffs Residents’
Association’s ongoing
frustration over rock spoil at
the surface at Clifton Beach
Garry Smith – Sumner locals
are a mad bunch all looking for
their 10min of fame. I would
rather be avoiding the doggy
poos than the rocks on the
beach. Walking bare feet is such
a challenging exercise at Sumner
with so many obstacles to avoid
like rocks, crabs, doggy poos . . .
when will the bureaucracy end.
Rosemary Neave – I appreciate
the commitment of
Redcliffs resident Pat McIntosh in
advocating for our area. However,
I believe the concern about rocks
being exposed at Clifton Beach
is not something that money
should be spent on at this time.
Yes, maybe shoes need to be worn
– but within a stone’s throw the
shoes can be removed and toes
wiggle in the sand in beautiful
Sumner beach. Let’s support Linwood,
Phillipstown and Brighton
… where more investment is
needed desperately.
Sean Thomson – I’m going
to try to write this without swearing
though many expletives can
be imagined in the background.
This is such a non-problem. So
there are rocks there – they affect
a pathetic percentage of the beach.
If there is such an issue, use the
second set of steps. And they’re
getting covered by sand? Great,
that’s what we want surely. You
can’t complain that they’re getting
covered up while also complaining
that the situation hasn’t
changed. Instead of monitoring
at least once a month why not go
and pick up the ones that really
annoy you. For the council to
spend ratepayers money to “fix”
this would be ludicrous. Maybe
Those complaining would like to
offer to do something about it.
Laurie O’Neill – My walking
buddy and I continue to wonder
what all the fuss is about. The
very small section of rocks appear
to be a natural part of the
beach environment and afford no
inconvenience when some form
of footwear is worn. I suspect
the complainants are a tiny [but
quite vocal] section of locals with
nothing better to do. As usually
happens the vast majority, who
see no problem here, will not
respond but just hope sanity prevails.
The beach, east from Shag
Rock, with its new rock wall and
the rock bund in the background
[now partially covered in flourishing
small trees and shrubs] is
aesthetically far more attractive
than the original. The designers,
engineers and contractor deserve
honest credit for this excellent
project.
Julie Riley responds to the
February 19 article about
about Lyttelton’s Mitre
Tavern, which has become
increasingly derelict since it
was closed due to damage
from the February 22, 2011,
earthquake
In addition to the Mitre Tavern
being an eyesore for so long l
would like to draw attention to
the guard fences that surround
it. My partner is 81 years old and
I’m 75. We find with our slow
mobility there are safety issues
where we are forced to walk up
Canterbury St on the road. Also
when driving and turning right
onto Norwich Quay the red barriers
block vision to oncoming right
hand traffic. The sooner these
barriers can be moved the better.
Charity yacht race to benefit
Cholmondeley children
A NEW sailing regatta created
to support Cholmondeley
Children’s Centre will see
businesses race around Lyttelton
Harbour.
The event, on March 20, will
be the first charity yacht race to
take place in Christchurch in
more than a decade.
Started by the Naval Point
Club and sponsored by Lyttelton
Port Company, the regatta aims
to bring together the community
behind local children and
families who are in crisis.
Cholmondeley Fundraising
and marketing manager Tanya
Cooke said the race is a unique
way for businesses to show they
care for Canterbury families,
while taking part in a challenging
team competition.
“Seeing the Lyttelton Harbour
community join together to
support our local tamariki and
whānau through this new event
is incredible. Our services are in
high-demand and this regatta
will help usto continue providing
respite and family support to
the more than 500 children that
stay at Cholmondeley each year,”
she said.
GOOD CAUSE: A sailing
regatta on Lyttelton Harbour
will be held on March 20.
With the support of a skipper
and expert crew member, each
team of sailors will traverse a
course through Lyttelton Harbour
and spend three-to-four
hours on the water learning as
they race.
Naval Point Club manager
Richard Matterson said the
event will be a one-of-a-kind
team building activity for businesses
and a great chance to
experience the thrill of sailing.
Lyttelton Port Company is not
only sponsoring the event, but
also entering a team.
The Cholmondeley Sailing
Regatta start at Naval Point Club
Lyttelton at 12.30pm.
Lunch will be included, with
a barbecue dinner and awards
ceremony to be held afterwards
at the club.
No decision yet on proposal to alter place names
• By Jess Gibson
A DECISION is still to be made
on a plan to assign or alter the
names of 13 locations across
Banks Peninsula.
The New Zealand Geographic
Board proposal, requested by
local hapu Rāpaki Rūnanga,
would see Maori names restored
alongside 11 current place names
and would change the names of
two locations.
Land Information New Zealand
ran a public consultation on
the proposal in November and
December.
Feedback received will be
considered by NZGB at its next
meeting on April 2.
NZGB secretary Wendy Shaw
said if there are only supporting
submissions then the board will
make the final decision.
However, if there are
submissions objecting to the
names, and the NZGB doesn’t
agree with them, then the
Minister for Land Information
Eugenie Sage will make the final
decision.
“As such we are unable to say
when final decisions will be made
at this stage in the process,’’ Ms
Shaw said.
If approved, historic Maori
names would be added to existing
names for Cass Peak, Dyers
Pass, King Billy Island, Mansons
Peninsula and Coopers Knob,
among others.
Two proposals are not for dual
names as there were no English
names for those features –
Rapaki and Rapaki Rock.
DILIGENT: Sebastian Fergusson will study a Bachelor of Business while developing his idea of
a more efficient rescue paddle board.
Bid to design a more efficient
surf lifesaving paddle board
FORMER SUMNER Surf
Life Saving Club member
Sebastian Fergusson is using his
scholarship to save lives at sea.
The 18-year-old has won a
scholarship to Gold Coast’s Bond
University to design a more efficient
rescue paddle board.
He will study a Bachelor of
Business while developing his
idea under a transformer scholarship
for student entrepreneurs.
Fergusson has competed in surf
lifesaving since he was seven.
He has won a gold and a
bronze medal at the New Zealand
Surf Life Saving Championships,
and made three finals at
the Australian Surf Life Saving
Championships.
Fergusson said his long-term
goal was to set up a company to
redesign the traditional
surf lifesaving rescue paddle
board.
“Like gears on a bike, I believe
the paddle board design can be
more efficient,” Fergusson said.
“Gears on a bike, you’re climbing
up a hill, you chop down a
gear, it makes it easier.
Fergusson is currently in the
research stage of his project and
intends to test other products
on the market to see how strong
they are and how well they travel
through water, before moving
ahead.
He hopes to be able to use
computer aided design to
maximise a board’s strength and
speed.
Lifeguard benefits
from Aussie
leadership college
TONI CRANKO had a lot
to gain from a prestigious
week-long course at the Surf
Life Saving Australia National
Leadership College.
The Sumner Surf Life Saving
Club member attended the college
in Sydney from February 2
to 8 along with 21 Australians
and James Lloyd from Bay of
Plenty’s Waihi Beach Lifeguard
Services.
The intensive annual leadership
and development programme
recognises the brightest
and best surf lifeguard leaders
aged between 20 and 30.
It is designed to challenge,
inspire and motivate the participants
and involves a range of
leadership activities and challenges.
Cranko said the course was
challenging, fun and very educational.
“A highlight was getting to
connect with different people
and talking about sharing resources
and different ideas that
we can bring back to our own
clubs. Even though we are different
organisations we still have a
lot of similarities.”
Cranko said one of the greatest
takeaways from the college is
the network that has been created
across Australia and New
Zealand.
“We now have this group of
people who we can go to, to
share ideas, seek advice and
Toni Cranko
discuss problems.”
The week gave Cranko the
confidence to back herself as a
leader, to try new things, challenge
people and ideas.
Being involved in, and seeing
how Surf Life Saving Australia
runs its national leadership programme
was really valuable, she
said.
“I plan to bring back some
of these ideas for our national
leadership programme – BP
Leaders for Life.”
Success for Redcliffs Mt Pleasant Bowling Club
The New Brighton Bowling Club hosted the
Bowls Canterbury Finals weekend on 2/3
February. Four members from our club Amy
Caddie, Margaret Bunce, Annabel Walmisley
and Jude Main played in the Women’s
Fours final against Bev Morel’s team from
Elmwood Park. It was a closely contested
match in extremely hot and windy conditions
with the Redcliffs Mt Pleasant team winning
the Trophy. This is the first time our club has
won this coveted Canterbury title.
Jude Main was runner-up in the 1st and 2nd
Year player’s final.
The Men’s Pairs semi-finalists of Rod Grout
and Danny Neal battled it out but lost 15/16
to the Small Team of father and son from
Burnside.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Planting winter vegetables
The Redcliffs
Residents
Association has
launched an
“eco-village”
initiative in
response to
our climate and ecological
emergency. This month
member Dave Bryce is
focusing on sustainable food.
IF YOU were too late to get
a vegetable garden started in
spring, now is the time to get one
started for winter.
If you need any persuasion, try
these reasons:
1. You will get high quality,
fresh, in-season, nutrient rich
food that you will want to cook
yourself.
2. You will know where your
food comes from and what’s in it,
no additives or processing.
3. You will reduce your carbon
emissions, by eliminating “food
miles” transporting your food,
and by storing carbon in your soil
when you compost the left-overs.
4. You will improve your
health and well-being by regularly
engaging with nature, getting
out in the fresh air and sunshine,
and getting exercise.
The simplest way to make your
garden is to get one or more of the
old green rubbish bins (with the
holes for handles and a hole in the
bottom), fill with soil/compost/
potting mix and place in a sunny
spot where you can water it.
A more permanent way is to
dig over a few square meters of
your ground, in a sunny spot
which you can water.
If you don’t want to dig, you
can just cut and lay down the
grass or weeds, poke extensively
with a garden fork in to loosen
and aerate, and then lay down
overlapping sheets of newspaper
at least six sheets thick
(or cardboard), followed by a
layer of sheep or cow manure,
layer of straw, layer of grass or
kitchen scraps, layer of fine bark,
then compost and potting mix
(Google: Lasagne Garden).
At this time of year you can
sow carrots, beetroot, turnips,
parsnips, kohlrabi, radishes, spring
onions, swedes or root crops,
BENEFITS:
Maintaining a
vegetable garden
can be good for your
health and wellbeing
for a number
of reasons.
dwarf beans, peas, broad beans
or legumes and lettuces, mesclun,
rocket, silverbeet, florence fennel,
spinach, kale, cabbages, Chinese
cabbages, broccoli and cauliflowers
or leaf crops.
Decide which of these you
would like to eat, and buy packets
of seed – take into account
that some crops will take a few
months to mature, although you
could buy plants of some to get a
head-start.
It is good practice to have
a separate container/bed for
each of the groups like roots,
legumes and leaf, and rotate
them at the next planting time
so that the same soil isn’t used
for the same group two years in
a row.
This puts less pressure on soil
nutrients and organisms and
avoids disease build-up.
Tackling peninsula’s
community issues
• By Jess Gibson
A CROWD of about 50 gathered
in Akaroa on Thursday to review
the main issues affecting the
community.
It was the second hui hosted
by the Akaroa Resource Collective
Trust at Heartlands,
following several working parties
which were held to analyse
topics raised at the first meeting
in November.
Some of the things discussed
in depth at the second hui were
the Akaroa Health Centre, a
Destination Management Plan,
FrenchFest and Akaroa Area
School.
ARCT at Heartlands provides,
promotes and supports
charitable services that benefit
the Akaroa community and surrounding
areas.
Manager Kerry Little said
from the meeting, there came
a goal to seek wider community
representation, including
younger people.
She said there are still questions
around how that can be
achieved, but next step is to go
out into other areas such as Duvauchelle
to share information
with residents and see what is
happening in their communities.
PROGRESS: Some of the
main issues affecting Akaroa
were discussed by the
community following several
working parties.
“It’s not just all about Akaroa,’’
she said.
The event, held at The Gaiety
on Rue Jolie, was attended by
residents, community groups
and Banks Peninsula Community
Board members, among
others and presentations were
given by key stakeholders.
Said community board member
Nigel Harrison: “It was a
good way of trying to engage the
community. I think there’s been
a lot of good work done with
the information and there were
more issues collected that will be
collated.
“What’s really good is that it’s
going to validate what we are
putting in the three year plan,’’
he said.
BIRDS OF THE ESTUARY
Tanya Jenkins is the manager of the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, a non-profit
organisation formed in 2002 to protect one of
New Zealand’s most important coastal wetlands.
Each week she introduces a new bird found
in the estuary. Her column aims to raise the
understanding of the values and uniqueness of
the area.
Vocal duck pairs for life
THE PARADISE duck, or
putangitangi, are a colourful and
very vocal endemic waterfowl
species – and they are only found
in New Zealand.
Numbers of these birds have
drastically increased since
European settlement as these
ducks adapted well to farmland
and open areas created by the
colonists and can now be found
throughout NZ.
The females are easily recognised
by their white heads but also by the
loud high-pitched shrieking noises
they make when constantly communicating
to the males.
Charming to know that most
Paradise ducks pair up for life;
feeding, nesting, flying together
and protecting their territory. It is
only during the moulting season
(when they lose all their feathers
and are temporarily unable to fly)
that they will team up with other
pairs as in larger groups they feel
safer from predators such as dogs
and cats.
Pairs build their nest in long
grass along our streams, rivers
and estuary and the female will
incubate the some nine eggs
while the male fiercely protects
his family from anyone or anything
coming near.
How can we help the Paradise
duck numbers to thrive? Keep dogs
on the lead at all times as dogs are
a huge threat to birds needing to
nest, rest and feed in peace.
ENDEMIC: Paradise
ducks are known to pair
up for life – feeding,
nesting, flying and
protecting their territory
together.
GAINING KNOWLEDGE: Okains Bay School pupils learn taiaha
skills as part of this programme discussing Māori taonga and
technology.
OKAINS BAY School pupils have
started working on a project which
aims to heighten their creativity.
The school was one of 33
selected nationally to take part in
the Ministry of Education programme,
Creatives in Schools,
for the first two terms of 2020.
It aims to to improve their
well-being, skills in communication,
collaboration, creative
thinking, and raise their awareness
of creative careers.
Curator and project manager
Holly Cunningham is helping the
students connect with artists and
experts in their field to learn skills
like painting, photography, weaving,
and drawing, among others.
They will use the printing
presses at Okains Bay Museum
to produce images and text, and
will learn about Māori technology
and Te Reo sentence structures to
describe the museum’s taonga.
During this programme the
pupils will discover more about
their history and become advocates
for their museum.
Their creative efforts will result
in a museum brochure, created
by the pupils with the help of a
graphic designer as a tour guide
for visitors.
Said principal Colin Hammond:
“It is great the ākonga are
learning about local history and
taonga in our untapped local
museum, possibly the best museum
in the country for Māori
artefacts and our history.”
The community will be invited
to a celebration, also organised
by the pupils to mark the end of
the project in May.

All good things come to an end
YOU KNOW what they say
about good things and what they
inevitably do?
Well, this week brings big
changes in our house. One being
the end of my time as a stay-athome-dad
and returning to the
workforce.
The other, sadly, being the end
of this column.
It’s been amazing having an opportunity
to share thoughts and
stories like this. It’s also been a
real treat to have people recognise
us (mostly Vittoria) when we’re
out and about. If you’ve been one
of those people, thank you, you
made my day every time.
But over and above it all, the
last 16 months have been something
beyond description in
terms of the privilege of spending
so much time with my daughter.
I was nervous about how I’d
cope going into it, but over time
I’ve developed my parenting skills
so much that I’d be confident to
care for her on my own anywhere
and for, pretty much, any length
of time.
I’ve witnessed my little girl
grow from cute, mumbling bug
to a sassy little speed demon who
loves music, singing and a select
series of bedtime stories. I’ve had
a front row seat to help her grow
into her own little person.
VITTORIA
& Matt
THEN AND NOW: Vittoria at the beginning of the stay-at-home
dad experience, and 16 months later.
There’s definitely been hard
times. Any parent could tell you
that it can be easy to feel cut off
from the ‘adult world’. Being a
full-time, stay home, parent it can
be hard to escape that without
the ‘adult world’ involving only
other parents. Probably with kids
in tow.
Not that that can’t be a great
time, because it definitely can be,
but you definitely find yourself
appreciating any non-kid focussed
events more than before.
•Former Bay Harbour News
journalist Matt Salmons has
spent 16 months as a stay-athome
dad. We have followed
his journey weekly but he
is now heading back to the
workforce
Another difficulty I found was
a kind of guilty feeling from not
financially contributing substantially
to the household income.
I’m not talking about feeling
FAMILY: Laura, Vittoria and Matt.
pressure to be a provider of cash,
that had only lasted a couple
weeks. It’s more feeling guilty
about spending on yourself because
it’s ‘not your money’.
It took a lot of Laura reassuring
me that I didn’t need to feel guilty
before I got myself my first stayat-home-parent
takeaway coffee.
Still, I wouldn’t change anything
about the experience. It is one of
the best things I’ve ever done.
Now I’ll have to get used to
the working world all over again,
including having to be out of my
PJs before 6am.
I’ll also have to get used to the
idea of walking out of the house
most days and leaving my little
girl behind, which is hard to even
think about. So as exciting as
these changes are, it’s sad to leave
the life of the last year behind.
So, wish us luck and I thank
you, dear reader, for all the time
you’ve spent with us over this
time. It’s been an honour sharing
it with you.
“As an American down under for more than 37 years, I realise I have
become addicted to the Southern Latitudes and the continuously
changing landscape of New Zealand. The bounteous flora, fauna,
landscape and weather provide a rich smorgasbord of images, never
static.”
“My painting process usually begins with a single object. Following
several preparatory sketches. I then start the process of adding other
images, as well as fabricated bits and pieces. It is the unforgiving
aspect of watercolour painting and the flexibility of moving three
dimensional components around on the surface that excites me.
Using a combination of fabricated tromp l’oeil paper objects and
the underlying painted surface, I hope to create work that is both
completely familiar and yet new again. Like life itself, each work
resonates with both the story and history associated with some objects,
and the imagined potential of others.”
This exhibition is John’s fourth at Little River Gallery. His passions in
life clearly drive the content of his art. Fishing, observing birds and
weather, nostalgic collections, conservation, typography and word
play are skillfully rendered and arranged with the designer’s eye. It is
difficult to appreciate the three dimensionality of John’s work without
the work before you. We love the appreciative sounds coming from
the gallery as the observer realises the extra dimension and life like
qualities John manages to achieve with paper.
Feijoa season signals the end of summer
• By Ian Knott
It’s March already, and that
means the start of feijoa
season. Has there ever been
a more polarising fruit than
feijoas? Love them or hate
them, these green, oval
nuggets of floral tartness can
bring an extra dimension to
many sweet dishes
Feijoa and blueberry
shortcake crumble
Serves 12
Ingredients
2 cups peeled and chopped feijoas
1 punnet (125g) fresh blueberries
1 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp ground ginger
Crumble topping
¼ cup ground almonds
¼ cup flour
½ cup wholegrain oats
¼ cup soft brown sugar
50g butter, melted
Shortcake
100g butter, softened
½ cup sugar
1 egg
1 ½ cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
Directions
Preheat oven to 170 deg C
(fan assisted). Line the base and
IN SEASON: Feijoa and blueberry shortcake crumble (left), and warm spiced feijoa doughnuts.
sides of a 23cm square cake tin
with baking paper. Mix together
chopped feijoas, blueberries,
sugar and ground ginger and set
aside.
Prepare the crumble topping.
Put ground almonds, flour,
wholegrain oats and sugar into a
mixing bowl. Stir through melted
butter. Set aside.
Prepare the shortcake. Beat
together butter and sugar until
pale. Beat in the egg. Mix in flour
and baking powder to form a soft
dough. Press dough evenly into
the base of the prepared tin.
Spoon over the prepared fruit
to cover the base. Scatter over the
crumble mix.
Bake for 40-45min until top is
golden and base cooked. Leave
in the tin for 20min before
carefully lifting it out, with the
baking paper onto a cake rack to
cool. Serve cut into pieces with
yoghurt, ice-cream or cream.
Warm spiced feijoa
doughnuts
Makes about 14
Ingredients
1¼ cups plain, gluten-free flour
½ tsp baking powder (gf)
Pinch of salt
½ tsp each of ground cinnamon
and mixed spice
3 Tbsp caster sugar
1 egg
3 Tbsp milk
1 Tbsp melted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
5 medium feijoas, peeled and
diced into 1cm pieces
Vegetable oil
Cinnamon sugar
½ cup caster sugar
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Directions
Put 5cm of vegetable oil in a
deep, medium-sized saucepan
and heat to 170 deg C on a sugar
thermometer or until a piece of
bread dropped into the oil turns
golden within 30sec.
Combine the sugar and
cinnamon in a shallow dish and set
aside for rolling cooked doughnuts.
Combine all the dry ingredients
in a large bowl. Whisk the egg,
milk, butter and the vanilla together
then stir into the flour along with
the feijoas until well combined.
Carefully drop tablespoons of
the batter into the pan and cook
for about 2min until a golden
colour and puffed, turning
to cook on all sides. Don’t
overcrowd the pan as the oil
temperature will drop rapidly and
the doughnuts will be heavy.
Remove with a slotted spoon
and drain on paper towels. Roll in
the cinnamon sugar then place on
a wire cooling rack in a 100 deg C
oven until all the doughnuts are
cooked. Eat immediately.
Huge power from Lexus hybrid SUV
THE HYBRID technology that
has been so successful for Lexus,
and Toyota, has largely been
based around the four-cylinder
powertrain that first arrived in
Prius 23 years ago.
Of course, the system has been
fundamentally improved and
refined over the years but the fact
remains most manufacturers still
use four pots in the petrol part of
the equation.
One of the exceptions is Lexus
and its V6 petrol-powered RX
series hybrid. Well actually, all
of the Lexus RX range has a V6
engine but the hybrid version is
rather special.
For one you get all the benefits
of that fabulous smooth engine
and all the power it generates, as
well as the economy benefits of
the petrol/electric hybrid system.
The RX450h is the rangetopping
model in the eight-model
series, there are four non-hybrids
and four hybrids. All have recently
undergone a fairly healthy
facelift and upgrade.
I covered many of the additions
in my RX350 article in January.
However, the changes consist
mostly of a refresh around the
frontal area and the inclusion of a
bit of extra kit.
One of the new features are the
clever adaptive headlights that
dim automatically when another
car approaches at night and will
aim towards the left hand side of
the road for greater visibility.
Elsewhere, the RX450h is the
large five or seven-seat sport
utility vehicle that tempts with
its onboard space, style, elegance
and luxury.
It also has to be remembered
that the RX450h is a hybrid, you
tend to forget that, it rides and
drives much like its non-hybrid
stablemate. Sport utility vehicles
have become the car of choice
for many buyers globally, and
the RX450h is there for those
who like the idea of a luxurious
medium-to-large wagon, with the
added benefit of being environmentally-friendly.
The hybrid system is traditional
from the Toyota/Lexus manufacturing
system. The petrol engine
starts automatically when the
electric system is under load, such
as immediate acceleration or to
maintain momentum. Petrol power
also provides the generation
to keep recharging the batteries,
although there is some regeneration
available on deceleration.
The entire drive system
family wagon for the everyday
role, yet it also pleases the buyer
with its plush interior and high
level of specification.
Lexus has interesting sales
figures for the RX, not only is
it the largest selling model in
the company’s range, the hybrid
accounts for 30 per cent of RX
sales.
I can see why, the two variants
I have evaluated in a short space
of time have reinforced my desire
for the Lexus product. So much
so that I tell all of those who are
interested in what I drive that I
am a Lexus owner, albeit one that
is nearing 20 years old.
That car still feels tight and
mechanically sound, given its age.
That’s the reason why I’m reluctant
to part with it, it’s one of the
cars that still feels good to drive
and has reliability and reputation
on its side.
The entire RX series carries
the pampering elements that
makes Lexus the sophisticated car
maker it has carved out a huge
reputation for.
