“As an American down under for more than 37 years, I realise I have
become addicted to the Southern Latitudes and the continuously
changing landscape of New Zealand. The bounteous flora, fauna,
landscape and weather provide a rich smorgasbord of images, never
static.”
“My painting process usually begins with a single object. Following
several preparatory sketches. I then start the process of adding other
images, as well as fabricated bits and pieces. It is the unforgiving
aspect of watercolour painting and the flexibility of moving three
dimensional components around on the surface that excites me.
Using a combination of fabricated tromp l’oeil paper objects and
the underlying painted surface, I hope to create work that is both
completely familiar and yet new again. Like life itself, each work
resonates with both the story and history associated with some objects,
and the imagined potential of others.”
This exhibition is John’s fourth at Little River Gallery. His passions in
life clearly drive the content of his art. Fishing, observing birds and
weather, nostalgic collections, conservation, typography and word
play are skillfully rendered and arranged with the designer’s eye. It is
difficult to appreciate the three dimensionality of John’s work without
the work before you. We love the appreciative sounds coming from
the gallery as the observer realises the extra dimension and life like
qualities John manages to achieve with paper.
by Sarah Pinborough
From the No.1 Sunday Times bestselling author
of Behind Her Eyes
There’s nothing like a woman scorned.
Something old…When Marcie met Jason Maddox,
she couldn’t believe her luck. Becoming Jason’s second
wife catapulted her into the elite world of high society. But
underneath the polite, old money manners, she knows she’ll
always be an outsider, and her hard-won life hangs by a thread.
Something new… Then Jason’s widowed boss brings back a new wife from
his trip to London. Young, beautiful, reckless – nobody can take their eyes off
Keisha. Including Jason.
Something you can never, ever undo…
Marcie refuses to be replaced so easily. People would kill for her life of luxury.
What will Marcie do to keep it?
She was slipping away. The further she fell, the closer the clouds seemed
to come. Wispy transparent slipstreams of white. Cirrus. Pain smashed her
head. Floating …
When investigative journalist Chrissie O’Brian lands a senior job at The
Argus, she is desperate to escape the nightmares of her past. Her life has
become a daily battle to numb the pain. But her job is something she can do
better than anyone else – and the only thing that keeps the memories at bay.
A face-off on the waterfront between the unions and big business is just the
kind of story to get her career back on track. But after a dockworker who
confided in her turns up dead, Chrissie becomes obsessed with unravelling
the truth. When a gruesome threat lands on her desk, it’s clear someone is
prepared to do anything to stop her.
But who is more dangerous – a ruthless enemy or a woman pushed to
the edge? Used to fighting her own demons, this is one battle Chrissie is
determined not to lose.
