Artist to WatchAALADEAN KHEROUFIMELANCHOLIC R&B ANTHEMS BRINGTHE SOUL ON VIBRANT DEBUTladean Kheroufi is oneof Edmonton’s mostrecognizable figures.The Canadian-Algerian multiinstrumentalist,DJ, producer, andarranger is a fixture in some of thecity’s most visible bands, playingand touring with the likes of TheVelveteins, Marlaena Moore, andLucas Chaisson. But far from aforever-sideman, between constanttours Kheroufi’s been hard at workon his debut solo album, a nostalgic,R&B-inspired 7-inch, titled “SorryIf Hurt You” b/w “Nothing EverChanges.”“I started recording [the songs] inmy home studio in Edmonton,” saysKehroufi. “I ended up cutting vocalsin an Airbnb just outside of Munichwhile on tour with The Velveteins,recorded extra guitars and trumpetcourtesy of Billy Aukstik of CharlesBy SEBASTIAN BUZZALINOBradley & His Extrodinaires in NYC,and finally brought it back home toEdmonton to add finishing touches.”Stepping into the limelight forhis solo debut, Kheroufi shines onthe two tracks that draw on CurtisMayfield’s timeless funk, SonnyOzuna’s confident genre bending,and his own assertive songwriting. Ashe explains, it’s a natural extensionof his experience playing in others’bands, but this time, it’s his name onthe album cover.“Putting out my own music doesn’tfeel much different than playing withother artists I love,” he says. “Themain goal is making sure more goodmusic is in the world. Of course, it’snice being able to express myselfwith my own lyrical content as thesongs are a true representation oftimes I’ve gone through.”“Sorry If I Hurt You” is a soulfulode to the devastation of the postbreakupintrospection while “NothingEver Changes” is about admittingdefeat, a melancholic party anthemmade for dancing on your own.With Kheroufi’s trademark senseof humour and optimism, his debut7-inch deals with the heavy emotionsputting them to wax and putting goodmusic out in the world.
