The Top 5 Holdens 

With the announcement recently that GM will stop making right hand drive vehicles and bringing the iconic Holden brand 

to an end. We thought we would take a look back at our Top 5 Picks of our favourite Holden models that were produced. 

1 – Holden Statesman 

Nothing says elegance more than a 1970s or 

1990s Holden Statesman. Originally created in 

1971, the Holden Statesman initially based on 

the Holden HQ Station wagon platform. With 

the concept in mind of offering more interior 

room for its passengers as well as more 

luxurious features amongst compared to rest 

of the Holden range. The original Statesman 

HQ long wheel base were released on 22 

July in 1971 and stopped in 1974. Retaining 

the Statesman De Vile, they created a new 

flagship model in the Caprice. This carried 

on with the HX in 1976, HZ in 1977 through 

to the WB in 1980. With production stopping 

for this series in 1984. It was re-introduced in 

1990 and then again in 2010 as a Caprice. But 

there was nothing that screamed elegance in 

Australia and NZ than a Statesman. 

2 – Holden Commodore 

Originally produced to replace the long 

serving Kingswood and Premier, the 

Commodore was based on the Opel model 

- popular in Europe as a smaller sedan to 

appease the market. Released in 1978 the 

Commodore was a result of Aussies and 

Kiwis starting to down size their vehicles due 

to the oil shortages and high rises in petrol in 

the mid-1970s; no longer was it economical to 

drive around in huge gas gurgling rear wheel 

drive sedans. The Commodore was touted as 

smaller, economical alternative. Also at this 

time the Asian Imports started to become 

more popular as cars from Toyota, Nissan 

and Datsun starting becoming more common 

in the market. No longer was it fashionable 

to ride around in large Kingswood or 

Statesman’s. Production of the Commodore 

commenced at the Pagewood (Sydney) and 

Dandenong (Victoria) plants in Australia 

in 1978 and ended in October 2017. New 

Zealand was also producing the model from 

1979 through to 1990. Easily one of the most 

iconic vehicles of the 1980s through to the 

2010s – the sight of a Commodore cruising 

past and everyone wanting one was also 

fuelled by the Popular Australian V8 Super 

Cars series. 

3 – Holden Colorado 

One of the shining lights in their range over 

the last decade has easily been the Colorado. 

Holden utes have been a popular ride since 

the original Holden Kingswood utes of the 

1970s and 90s Maloos but with the rise of 

Utes and SUVS in the 2010s, Holden took a 

while to get a viable product into the market 

place. The Holden Colorado utility vehicle 

(and then similar Holden Colorado 7) SUV 

were introduced in 2008 to replace the 

Holden Rodeo model. The current model, 

(introduced in 2017) is a right-hand-drive 

version of the Brazilian, third-generation 

Chevrolet S10 dual cab.[1] The Colorado 7 

was rebadged as the Holden Trailblazer in 

2017 and is built in right-hand-drive at the GM 

Thailand plant. Originally a mild run about 

the Colorado grew into statue with its second 

generation and release of its LTZ model and 

then its Sports model the Sports cat. Both 

came with rave reviews and excellent driving 

results and was one of the better models of 

utes on the landscape. 

4 – Holden Kingswood 

The original Holden Icon was released with

the HK series in 1968 and Aussies and Kiwis 

have been in love ever since. From its 2 door 

coupe/ute, 3 door panel van, 4 door sedan 

or 5 door station wagons, the Kingswood 

has been a major Kiwiana or Aussie icon 

since. Since the HK, the Kingswood has 

had many more series from the HT to the 

HG. Then the second generation launching 

in 1971 with the likes of the HQ, HJ, HX, HZ 

through to the WB. A third generation was 

proposed but by then the World Oil crises 

had hit bringing about halt to production 

over fears of profit loss from its Corporate 

headquarters GM. Production was bought 

to an end with the rise of the Commodore 

with the last Kingswood badged product 

being manufactured in 1980. Of note – the 

Kingswood and its various model actually 

made it around the world with the Kingswood 

being assembled for sale in countries like 

South Africa and Trinidad & Tobago! 

5 – Holden Monaro 

America have the Mustang and Chevy. 

Europe - Ferraris and Bugattis, UK - 

Aston Martin, Asia - Skyline and Supra. In 

Australasia we had the Holden Monaro. Built 

as a flat out muscle cars, the Monaro were 

one of kind vehicles to grace our landscapes. 

The Frist Monaro was a HK released in 1968. 

Followed by the HT & HG. With the second 

generation released in 1971 with the HQ. 

Then the release of the V2 and VZ in 2001 

& 2004 which bought it back into the lime 

light again. Known for their saloon two door 

style, The Monaro was very stylish rear wheel 

drive car coupe. The Monaro body itself was 

used by several different brands around the 

world. And housed the first ever Australian 

developed V8 motor. Famously rebranded 

around the world as Pontiac GTO in the US 

and as a Vauxhall Monaro in the UK, NBA 

player Andrew Bogut purchased a Pontiac 

GTO shortly after signing with the Milwaukee 

Bucks as a tribute to his Australian roots!

BACK OF THE 

Coffee on wheels 

Finding a point of difference 

can assist business success, 

something Andrew and 

Matt Cantwell considered when 

setting up their own business. 

“We knew how to make good 

coffee so decided to start a mobile 

coffee business and one which 

was sustainable,” says Andrew. 

Andrew and Matt looked for 

a suitable yet unique vehicle, 

which was economic to operate 

and eco-friendly. They chose 

a new 50cc Italian Tuk Tuk 

Piaggio Ape imported from 

Italy by a Wellington dealer. 

Ape is Italian for bee and the 

threewheeled Piaggio Ape, which 

has been produced as a light 

commercial vehicle since 1948, is 

typical of a bee buzzing around 

a busy city, in a similar fashion to 

the Vespa scooter (the wasp) on 

which it was modelled. 

With a few events locked in, 

Andrew and Matt began the 

Empire Coffee Company midwinter 

2016. Business grew 

steadily, their Tuk Tuk Piaggio 

Ape coffee cart attracting 

considerable attention. 

Already, the two-seater Piaggio 

Ape, which is classed as a moped 

and registered for road use, has 

clocked up 20,000 kilometres. 

This figure represents a lot of 

motoring for a vehicle which has 

a top speed of 30 kilometres an 

hour and costs just $9 to fill. 

Business boomed for Andrew 

and Matt. They purchased a 

second vehicle in 2017 and a 

third in 2018, employing staff to 

assist in the business. 

“We found one coffee cart 

couldn’t cope with the number 

of enquiries we were getting 

so we decided to increase our 

fleet, to allow us to attend 

more events on the same day,” 

explains Andrew. 

The Empire Coffee Company’s 

vehicles are seen at many 

occasions, festivals and 

markets, including Warbirds 

over Wanaka. They take the Ape 

down on a trailer to this event 

to avoid days of travel. Their 

good coffee, distinctive vehicles 

and ecological approach to 

business have made them a 

popular choice. 

Where possible, they source 

products locally, offer milk 

alternatives and their packaging 

is more eco-friendly. Even their 

waste coffee grinds are recycled 

as a bi-product in handmade 

scrubs or composted. 

“People love the vehicle. It’s the 

sort of thing you don’t see every 

day. Children hop in the front 

and adults want to know about 

its motor. It’s a real talking point 

for the business,” adds Andrew. 

The Empire Coffee Company 

now has its first permanent 

coffee shop at the Riverside 

Market in Christchurch. 

“We chose the location for its 

aesthetics and proximity to 

the river. It’s a popular area 

with locals and tourists. We’re 

getting great feedback about 

our coffee and the shop’s fitout,” 

says Andrew. 

While the new coffee shop has 

been a success Andrew and 

Matt will still have their coffee 

carts on the road. 

‘It’s a good way to get out and 

about, promoting the brand 

and meeting people,” suggests 

Andrew.

Lexus RX450h 

The hybrid technology that has been 

so successful for Lexus, and Toyota, 

has largely been based around the 

four-cylinder powertrain that first arrived in 

Prius 23 years ago. 

Of course, the system has been 

fundamentally improved and refined 

over the years but the fact remains most 

manufacturers still use four pots in the 

petrol part of the equation. 

One of the exceptions is Lexus and its 

V6 petrol-powered RX series hybrid. Well 

actually, all of the Lexus RX range has a 

V6 engine but the hybrid version is rather 

special. 

For one you get all the benefits of that 

fabulous smooth engine and all the power 

it generates, as well as the economy 

benefits of the petrol/electric hybrid 

system. 

The RX450h is the range-topping model 

in the eight-model series, there are four 

non-hybrids and four hybrids. All have 

recently undergone a fairly healthy facelift 

and upgrade. The changes consist mostly 

of a refresh around the frontal area and the 

inclusion of a bit of extra kit. 

One of the new features are the clever 

adaptive headlights that dim automatically 

when another car approaches at night and 

will aim towards the left hand side of the 

road for greater visibility. 

Elsewhere, the RX450h is the large five or 

seven-seat sport utility vehicle that tempts 

with its onboard space, style, elegance and 

luxury. 

It also has to be remembered that the 

RX450h is a hybrid, you tend to forget that, 

it rides and drives much like its non-hybrid 

stablemate. Sport utility vehicles have 

become the car of choice for many buyers 

globally, and the RX450h is there for those 

who like the idea of a luxurious medium- 

to-large wagon, with the added benefit of 

being environmentally-friendly. 

The hybrid system is traditional from the 

Toyota/Lexus manufacturing system. 

The petrol engine starts automatically 

when the electric system is under load, 

such as immediate acceleration or to 

maintain momentum. Petrol power also 

provides the generation to keep recharging 

the batteries, although there is some 

regeneration available on deceleration. 

The entire drive system operates 

seamlessly, and in the RX450h drive is sent 

to all four wheels through continuously 

variable transmission. The ratio spread 

encourages economy as well as the gearing 

variation needed for sealed and off-theseal 

travel. Paddle-shift selectors will also 

lock the gearing into one of the pre-set 

steps. 

The RX450h is a definite lure for those 

who like clean and green, and infrequent 

stops to fill up at the pumps. Lexus claims 

a 5.7-litre per 100km (50mpg) combined 

cycle figure for the Limited version, as 

evaluated. I couldn’t get anywhere near 

that, my driving style is way too vigorous; 

however the fuel usage readouts were 

constantly listing around a respectable 

8.1l/100km (35mpg) with 6l/100km 

(47mpg) available at a constant 100km/h. 

Those familiar with V6 power won’t 

be disappointed with the hybrid RX’s 

performance. It is still capable of a 7.7sec 

standstill to 100km/h time and will lunge 

through an overtaking manoeuvre in 5.5sec. 

That is due to the high torque figure the 

hybrid system produces. Lexus claims 

335Nm (230kW), and if you take into 

account that electric power has maximum 

torque from the moment it starts to 

produce, the result is instant acceleration 

with constant momentum from that point 

on. 

Recently, I’ve been making regular 

expeditions to the South Canterbury town 

of Fairlie, I used the RX450h for one of 

those journeys, simply because it was an 

ideal car for those fabulous roads and one 

which would replicate the type of driving 

many families would use a big SUV for, it 

is an adept highway cruiser and it handles 

the tight and twisty challenges with much 

dignity. 

The RX series, as a whole, epitomises 

the luxury Lexus buying experience, 

it is a versatile family wagon for the 

everyday role, yet it also pleases the buyer 

with its plush interior and high level of 

specification. 

Lexus has interesting sales figures for 

the RX, not only is it the largest selling 

model in the company’s range, the hybrid 

accounts for 30 per cent of RX sales. 

I can see why, the two variants I have 

evaluated in a short space of time have 

reinforced my desire for the Lexus product. 

So much so that I tell all of those who are 

interested in what I drive that I am a Lexus 

owner, albeit one that is nearing 20 years 

old. 

That car still feels tight and mechanically 

sound, given its age. That’s the reason why 

I’m reluctant to part with it, it’s one of the 

cars that still feels good to drive and has 

reliability and reputation on its side. 

The entire RX series carries the pampering 

elements that makes Lexus the 

sophisticated car maker it has carved out a 

huge reputation for. 

At $126,900 (add $900 for seven seats) 

the 450h tops out the RX series, although 

$116,400 will get you into the hybrid RX 

range.

and around 20 minutes later should be 

passing by Princess Margaret Hospital 

in Cashmere, which will be a great

vehicles in all their glory. The parade 

will finish at the Sugar Horse Café, 100 

Moorhouse Ave or Luciano Café Bar at 

70 Moorhouse Ave. 

Special displays this year include the 

ever popular demonstrations and 

test drives of electric vehicles; the ‘Go 

Baby Go’ project, a project supported 

by Sunrise Rotary which improves 

mobility for disabled children; the 

Vintage Machinery Club with fantastic

Boating safety tips: 

Keep your boat safe during 

storms and bad weather 

Over the past 10 years, Mariner 

discovered the best ways to 

help you prepare your boat 

to survive a storm. Now that the 

tropics are beginning to get fired 

up, it’s a good time to make sure 

you are ready to protect your boat 

from storm damage both on the 

water and on land. 

Clearly, the size of your vessel will 

play a major role in what you can 

and cannot do to protect your boat 

from a storm. Remember to pay 

attention to furled sails, they really 

need to be secured! 

Here are several options you may 

opt to choose from if your boat 

must stay on the water: 

Dry stack: 

You can place your vessel in dry 

stack, in a secure boat shed. If you are 

choosing to go this way, it is better to 

have an arrangement made in advance 

to get your boat secured safely before 

the storm arrives. Different operators 

have different policies with bungs. In 

or Out? If left in, your boat could fill up 

with water if it’s left outside in a stack. 

If left out, the boat could be relaunched 

and fill up with water if you don’t check 

it. If your bung stays in, don’t let your 

boat fill up with fresh water! 

Berth: 

A dock with strong pilings that offers 

reasonable shelter from water and 

storm surge is an ideal place to berth. 

Double all mooring lines, but remember 

to leave enough slack to allow rising 

water. Crossing spring lines should be 

equipped front and back and secured 

high on pilings. To prevent any chafing 

and breakage, all rough points should 

be wrapped with rubber hoses, rags 

and tapes. You may also protect your 

boat from rubbing against the dock 

or other boats by installing additional 

fenders. 

Anchor: 

If you are out at sea, and get caught, 

you may need to anchor. Choose a 

protected harbour or bay with a sandy 

or muddy bottom with good anchor 

hold. You should also choose to use 

good ground tackle and a correctly 

sized anchor. Don’t go too small! It is 

also advised to get as much ground 

tackle as possible out, but be wary of 

swinging room. 

Moorings: 

Ensure your mooring certification is 

up to date, check for chafe over the 

bow for rope components and check 

for corroded “O” rings and the like. 

Any lines or chain going over the bow 

should be positively retained. If not, 

you run the risk of your mooring gear 

causing problems as it comes into 

contact with other components on the 

bow if it jumps free in a swell or rough 

seas.

Trailered boats: 

Here are some simple tips for 

protecting your boat out of the water: 

• Bring it inside! Your boat will be 

better protected from wind damage 

and flying objects if it is stored on its 

trailer inside your garage or shed. 

• Secure your boat outside. If you 

must store your boat outside during 

a storm, be sure to remove any 

canvas you can. 

• Trim those trees! Trim back large, 

dead or dying trees and branches 

that could fall on your watercraft 

storage space in a strong storm. 

• Watch out for rodents! Yes, rats and 

opossums can get into your boat 

and nibble away at squabs and 

electronics. 

Regardless of where you will secure 

your boat during a storm, you should 

always remove all movable equipment 

and gear. If it cannot be removed, 

it needs to be secured to the boat. 

Anything that can come loose in a 

storm should be removed or secured. 

You can also seal windows, doors and 

hatches with duct tape to enhance the 

watertight integrity of your boat. 

With a bit of preparation, you can 

greatly increase the chances of your 

boat surviving bad weather and 

providing you with many more years of 

fun and enjoyment on the water.

Things to remember 

So you don't need your boat insurance 

Boats are great, yet they can 

likewise be a ton of work. 

They’re predominantly 

high-maintenance and frequently 

require extensive amounts 

of time. Great boat insurance 

makes things easy when you 

have a claim, but being prepared 

means more than having great 

boat insurance. We at Mariner 

Insurance are here to help. We will 

be sharing some of thoughts on 

how not to need us. So, whether 

you’re an end of week warrior or 

a lifelong sailor, we hope these 

tips help. Some look obvious, until 

you need to claim on your boat 

insurance. 

Take it slow 

You're unquestionably going to need 

to go slow when berthing. Keep in 

mind the well-known axiom: “Go slow 

and look like a pro”. Try not to be the 

person who gets noticed smashing into 

the dock. You may believe it's cool to 

whip your vessel out of the berth or 

away from the ramp and out like Scott 

Dixon. Trust us, it isn't. Berthing is the 

same, slamming her into reverse “at the 

right time” just doesn’t work out often. 

Take our advice and simply go slow, 

particularly if you're new to the water. 

Know your own prop walk if you have it. 

Learn how to handle/ 

back in a boat trailer 

Maneuvering into a crowded or 

constricted space without knowing 

precisely how to move your single 

prop boat is one of life's great joys. 

So practice when there is nobody else 

around. Do you like an audience when 

backing the trailer in? Well you will sure 

have one in summer. So it's critical to 

figure out how to deal with your boat 

trailer. Here's a viable piece of advice: 

when backing up a trailer, put your hand 

at the base of the wheel's 6 o'clock 

position. The direction that you turn 

the wheel is the direction that the 

trailer will go. 

Make sure you are up to 

code 

Nothing can mess up a lovely day out 

on the open seas, or on a beach like 

having a little accident that a well set 

up first aid kit would sort out. And 

make sure it's up to date, like your 

extinguishers and flares. Yes, we know 

you think you won’t need them. But you 

might. Just like boat insurance. 

Know the tides 

It is incredibly important to know the 

time and heights of high and low tides 

before heading out. It is often vital 

to know when “to go or not to go” 

in and out of an inlet or a tributary. 

It might likewise enable you to keep 

away from groundings amid low tide in 

unmarked areas. We suggest you take 

a basic boating-safety-course over the 

weekend with your local coastguard. 

It’s affordable and will give you peace 

of mind. Hitting rocks and running 

aground are big causes of claiming on 

your boat insurance. 

Think ahead 

Always overdress (you get extra points 

for having a trendy sailing outfit)! 

Weather conditions on the water are 

typically not the same as ashore. When 

heading out for a day on the water, 

make certain to bring skin protection 

such as sunscreen and a shirts. Nothing 

can mess up a weekend of beautiful 

weather like getting terrible sunburn. 

Additionally, be sure to have snacks 

and water. Everyone is more joyful 

(especially kids) when they are well fed 

and extra water aboard is never a bad 

idea. 

Get covered 

If you’re out on the water, it makes 

sense to get comprehensive boat 

insurance that will be there for you if 

you ever do need it.
