The service runs from Gills Bay in Caithness to St Margaret’s Hope in Orkneyand can accommodate foot passengers, cars, bikes, tour buses and freight on the shortcrossing (approx. one hour). The family receive no government funding.The Alfred replaced the 2,382gt/2008 built Pentalina, which was built by FBMA Marinein Cebu, the Philippines.The Alfred is named after the Father of Pentland Ferries’ Founder, Andrew Banks.Facilities: The rearmost areas of the passenger lounges provide seating for around125 persons (slightly more than half of this number in the port side lounge) and forward ofhere is a cafeteria lounge with at-table seating for 137 persons (port side) and 100 persons(starboard side). The self-service cafeteria, galley, crew mess and crew lounge are locatedforward on the section of deck that goes across the forward area of vehicle deck. There isalso a Children’s Play Area forward on the starboard side. The top deck features a covered,dog-friendly 70-seater sun lounge.
