All from Mount Sterling who served
Sifting through history
to compile veterans list
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
When Steve Chambers took over as director
of the Mount Sterling Community
Museum, he wondered what he could contribute
to the cataloguing of the town’s history.
His predecessor, the late Denny Morris,
wrote three volumes on the history of
Mount Sterling, complete with then-andnow
photographs of many of the businesses
in town. Chambers had to find his own
niche, covering another swath of the town’s
past.
“I had catalogued all of the books in the
museum and realized all the genealogical
history of the wars we had on hand,” he
said.
With that realization and inspired by the
approach of the 100th anniversary of the
end of World War I, Chambers found his
project—to compile a list of all Mount Sterling
veterans who served or are serving in
the American armed forces from the Revolutionary
War to the present.
That was in 2016, and he’s been hard at
it ever since. To date, the catalogue contains
more than 2,000 entries filling about 150
pages.
The work is contained in a three-ring
binder and indexed by war, cemeteries in
which the veterans are buried, veterans
who received a Purple Heart in World War
II or Korea, World War II prisoners of war,
veterans who died in military service during
World War II, Mount Sterling American Legion
Post 417 rosters, and individuals honored
at the veterans memorial in the town
square.
The job of sifting through books, old
newspapers, obituary files, online genealogy
services, and other resources to glean information
specific to Mount Sterling has been
a tedious one, but Chambers hasn’t minded
a bit.
librarian at (Ohio State University) for 30
April focuses on clubs and notable
women of Mount Sterling.
Other displays planned for the remainder
of the year include veteransthemed
displays in May and November
and a Christmas-themed display in December.
The museum is open to other
interesting historical items.
Among recent donations to the museum
are:
• a history of Mount Sterling (1805-
1935) written by sixth-graders in Pat
Jackson’s class in 1969-70;
• a winter U.S. Army uniform that belonged
to TEC 5 (sergeant) Harold Dunn,
who served in New Guinea during World
War II; and
• an optical trial lens set in a wooden
case, owned by Henry L. Cook, who
opened a jewelry repair shop in 1905 in
the K of P building on North London St.
He also repaired watches and ordered
glasses for customers.
The museum’s wish list includes
school yearbooks (especially from the
1980s), postcards with photos of Mount
Sterling, envelopes with a Mount Sterling
postmark, and Mount Sterling phone
books (especially from before 1975).
The museum is located in the lower
Land sold to fund park upgrades
By Josephine Birdsell
West Jefferson village council approved
the sale of a 26.58-acre plot to The Richard
J. Conie Co. for $470,000.
The company plans to build homes on the
property, located at 263 W. Pearl St., along
State Route 142. The village plans to use the
money to update parks.
“We have three parks in the village and
they need some much added help (and)
TLC,” said Mayor Ray Martin.
The main focus is transformation of Garrette
Park into an “all-inclusive park,” featuring
play equipment accessible to children
of all abilities. The estimated cost of the
project is $496,000.
The village has applied for outside funding for the Garrette Park
improvements. Battelle has already provided $25,000 in grant
money. The village also hopes to land a $200,000 state capital
grant, along with a number of smaller grants.
Council’s plan is to use proceeds from the property sale to cover
any costs not covered by grant funding. Additional money from the
sale will go toward updating other West Jefferson parks with walking
trails and new recreational equipment.
The village originally bought the Pearl Street plot for $174,000
and has been renting it to farmers.
The village makes “a couple thousand dollars” off the rented land
yearly, Martin said. Its sale marks a significant increase in funds
for parks and recreation.
Council took a holistic approach to the sale, considering both bidding
price and The Richard J. Conie Co.’s plans for development,
Martin said.
“We have done our due diligence. This is the best price we could
get for the product they’re going to build,” he said.
The next regular meeting of West Jefferson village council is set
for 7 p.m. March 16 in council chambers, located on the second story
of town hall at 28 E. Main St. For information about various village
Magical ‘Mary Poppins’
descends on LHS stage
By Theresa Hennis
Staff Writer
If you remember seeing the movie “Mary
Poppins” as a child, and the feel-good songs
still make you tap your toes and sing along,
then you are sure to enjoy London High
School’s stage production of the beloved
story. Shows are set for 7 p.m. March 12-14.
“It’s the story of the Banks family, especially
George Banks and his coming to realize
that family is more important than
anything,” said Scott Blanton, an English
teacher at London High School and the
show’s director. “Our production is a little
different than the original movie. We have
a few extra numbers, and the focus is on the
Banks family.”
Senior Paul Huff and Emily Bennett play
George and Winifred Banks, an uptight,
wealthy couple in search of a new nanny for
their children, Jane (played by senior Tori
Bennett) and Michael (played by freshman
Anthony Holfinger).
In comes the magically entertaining and
nurturing Mary Poppins (played by senior
Sara Madden), who takes the children on
fantastical adventures along with her
friend, Bert (played by junior Luke Peart),
a chimney sweep and jack-of-all-trades.
“It’s nice to be stepping into such an
iconic role, especially for my senior year,”
Madden said. “I think this is a tale everyone
loves, and our interpretation and production
of it is fun. It’s a story from our childhood.”
Junior Stevie Cooper plays a teddy bear
in the toy scene and serves as the production’s
student director. About her fellow performers,
she said, “The musical crew is like
a family. Our lead characters are extremely
good at what they do.”
The cast includes fourth- and fifthgraders,
which Blanton said the theater program
hasn’t done in a while, and there is a
tap dance number, as well.
The show is filled with fun special effects,
including a cabinet that comes apart and
back together on its own, Mary pulling a hat
rack from her carpet bag, and her umbrella
coming and going magically.
Popular songs from the original include
“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in
Time” and “Jolly Holiday.”
Shows are set for 7 p.m. March 12-14 at
London High School, 336 Elm St.
Blanton anticipates the show will sell out
and encourages anyone interested in attending
to buy tickets as soon as possible. Tickets
purchased online are $6 for students and
$8 for adults. Go to http://our.show/londonhigh-school-theatre-department/72776.
County’s delinquent taxes are at all-time low
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The Madison County Treasurer’s Office
is making a significant dent in the amount
of back real estate taxes owed to the county.
“Delinquency is the lowest it’s every been
since I’ve been here,” said Treasurer Donna
Landis, who has worked for the office for
more than 36 years.
Two years ago, Landis teamed up with
Madison County Prosecutor Stephen J.
Pronai. They met with attorneys and
started conducting tax foreclosures on properties
where delinquent taxes are owed.
“It had been done before but wasn’t done
aggressively,” Landis said.
Two years ago, the amount of delinquent
taxes owed to the county was more than $1
million. Now, it’s $717,000.
Working with local law counsel, Landis’s
office launches four tax foreclosure cases
each month. Some cases take longer than
others. Sometimes, it’s difficult to locate the
responsible party; other times the responsible
party is deceased, Landis said. Despite
these challenges, progress has been made.
“As far as big delinquencies, those are
few and far between now,” she said.
The Treasurer’s Office is starting to take
the same approach with mobile home properties,
conducting tax foreclosures where
delinquent taxes are owed. The total
amount of delinquencies in this category is
$90,000.
“The mobile home parks are working
well with us,” Landis said.
She noted that her office can offer payment
plans for those who are behind on paying
their taxes. The options are to spread
payments over 2.5 years or five years.
“If you’re worried you are going to be
foreclosed on, you’ve got to call me. If you
make effort to get it taken care of, I will
make my effort to help you,” Landis said.
In other tax collection news, Landis reported
that her office just finished real estate
tax collection for the first half of 2019,
payable in 2020.
“We’re up $1.3 million from last year at
the same time, which is remarkable,” she
said. “We hit the $30 million mark and have
never hit the $30 million mark for the first
half.”
The county usually collects $44 million a
year in real estate taxes.
Landis said the first-half collections are
always strong because some property owners
pay for the full year. She said she does
not know why first-half collections were so
much higher this time around.
For more information about tax collection
and payment plan options for delinquent
taxes, call the Madison County
years. Research is what I’ve been doing
all my life, and I have an interest in military
history,” he said.
One of the troves of information that
served him well in his project is one he came
across by accident. The museum is located
on the lower floor of Mount Sterling Public
Library. He and Chris Siscoe, the library’s
director, got to wondering what was in a
3x6-foot cabinet located under the stairwell.
“We found the key, and inside there was
a lot of information about the Mount Sterling
Daughters of the American Revolution
chapter,” Chambers said. “And in one box,
we found minutes and rosters of the local
Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) chapter,
which was like the Legion of the day.”
The GAR chapter was active in Mount
Sterling from 1884 to the 1920s. From that
information alone, Chambers was able to
add another 50 names to his list.
At this point, Chambers said most of the
heavy research is complete, but he will continue
to update the list as obituaries of local
veterans come in. He will do the same with
additions or corrections he receives from
anyone with connections to Mount Sterling
service men and women.
He has already displayed the catalogue
at various events honoring veterans and
will continue to do so.
“A lot of people like to look through it
just to see their grandfather’s name,”
Chambers said.
Of course, anyone is welcome to look
through the catalogue during museum
hours—10 a.m.-noon Monday, Wednesday
and Friday—or by appointment. The library
is located at 60 W. Columbus St. The museum
is located on the lower level and is accessible
via an exterior stairwell or by stairs
or an elevator from inside the library.
Support to ‘live, work and go where they want’
PAGE 6 - MADISON MESSENGER - March 8, 2020
On March 3, the Madison County commissioners endorsed March
as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This year’s theme
encourages everyone to support individuals with disabilities in their
pursuit to “live, work and go where they want.”
The commissioners support the Madison County Board of Developmental
Disabilities (MCBDD) and the people the board serves
throughout the year.
Susan Thompson, MCBDD superintendent, took the opportunity
to recognize independent providers Tami Pritchard and Billy Fuller.
They represented more than 40-plus independent and agency
providers that serve individuals with disabilities on an on-going
basis.
“The providers are the life-blood for the individuals we serve,”
Thompson said. “They work with folks on their daily living skills,
help them explore their interests, and sometimes take them in as a
member of the family.”
Additionally, the commissioners heard about the great things individuals
with disabilities are doing in the work force. Spearheaded
by MCBDD staff members Gretchen Peters and Hope Smith, job
training and placement of individuals with disabilities has grown
exponentially in recent years. Connie Lollo works with MCBDD in
a partnership with the Educational Service Center to assist in this
process.
“In a number of instances, our individuals have shown a great
desire to work in the community where they live and pay taxes,”
Thompson said. “We are fortunate to have committed staff to work
with them.”
For more information about the services the Board of Developmental
Disabilities provides, call (740) 852-7050 or send email to
sthompson@co.madison.oh.us. The board offices are located at 500
Elm St., London. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On March 3, the Madison County commissioners signed a proclamation to designate March as Developmental
Disabilities Awareness Month. They were joined by several individual served by the Madison County Board of
Developmental Disabilities, and a number of people who assist them: (front row, from left) County Administrator
Rob Slane, Waymond Harris, Commissioner David Hunter, MCBDD/ESC staff Connie Lollo, Sam Anders, Commissioner
Elisabeth Moss elevates material in ‘e Invisible Man’
As Marvel began its takeover at the box office, competing studios
decided they too wanted in on that sweet cash flow with their own
expanded universe. The goal, besides raking in that sweet cash, was
to re-introduce the audience to their famed properties via standalone
films and then tie those threads into a larger feature with all
of its popular creations. The problem with this, they would soon
learn, is that not all of those creations were as popular as Marvel
superheroes.
One such studio that tried its hand at replicating Marvel Studios’
success was Universal Pictures. In 2014, the Dark Universe
was launched with “Dracula Untold” and then “The Mummy” with
Tom Cruise followed three years later. In between came an announcement
that Russell Crowe was in talks to portray Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde while Johnny Depp was set for The Invisible Man.
Then all of those plans came to a screeching halt when the studios
realized that the audience hated those two films and weren’t all
that excited about the potential of the latter ones either.
In 2018, the studio was forced to announce the death of the Dark
Universe but one could make a strong case that it really started
with the uninspired “Dracula Untold.” That was a true stinker of a
film and those who have not seen it should consider themselves fortunate.
But, much like its famed vampire, the plans did not stay dead
and a rebirth of sorts was announced via a partnership with Blumhouse
Productions. Together, their first step was the launch of “The
Invisible Man” sans Depp.
In a somewhat inspired move,
writer and director Leigh Whannell
transformed this H.G. Wells creation
by turning him into a true
21st century nightmare — the tech
bro who hates privacy.
In the film, Elisabeth Moss plays Cecila Kass, the
long-suffering girlfriend of tech genius Adrian Griffin
(Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After years of emotional, mental
and physical abuse, she decides to spring herself free
of him with the help of her sister Emily (Harriett Dyer).
While hiding out in the home of a childhood friend,
Cecila learns that Adrian has killed himself. Just as she
is trying to wrap her head around these events, she
learns via his equally slimy brother Tom (Michael Dorman)
that he has left her $5 million in his will with the
odd stipulation that she not “commit any crimes.”
As Cecila makes progress in her recovery, she begins
to experience strange occurrences such as misplaced
items, bed sheets that roll off the body without any
thrashing and the feeling of eyes all over her body.
After she sees footprints on the floor one night, she
begins to suspect that Adrian is still alive and has used
his vast knowledge in the field of optics to render himself
invisible. When no one believes her theory, she decides
to takes steps to try to rid him of her life once and
for all.
A positive in this film is the acting from Moss, who
elevates the material from the occasional clunky dialogue
and the unfortunate unraveling of the latter half.
the reel deal
Dedra Cordle
This is not a movie that holds up
well upon deeper thought but her
acting saves the film from its
lesser parts.
Another positive is the use of
lingering shots of inconspicuous
furniture and doorways to ratchet
up the tension in lieu of a physical
being. That aspect of the film
works, which makes the unveiling
of the invisibility all the more confusing.
A negative of this film is with the computer graphic
imagery, which ranges from bad to laughable at points
throughout. The director made a great decision with the
use of angles but not so great ones as it pertained to the
unveiling of the invisibility cloak. “The Invisible Man”
is not funny, but one cannot help but laugh at some of
the CGI.
All in all, “The Invisible Man” is a decent thriller that
surprisingly manages to take the trauma of domestic
abuse survivors seriously. With a deft hand by Moss, it’s
a compassionate film that is elevated by her performance
despite iffy dialogue and several gaping plot holes.
I’m not sure where they plan to go with this property
next, but if she’s there leading the way, I think I would
be too. Grade: B-
projects that often get associated with 4-H.
While 4-H does offer these opportunities,
there is so much more available to our youth.
Want to learn about rocketry? There’s a
project for that. Interested in shooting
sports or exploring the outdoors? We have
several projects related to those topics. 4-H
projects include livestock, cats, dogs, trees,
woodworking, nutrition, creative arts,
scrapbooking, cake decorating and more.
Ohio 4-H has more than 200 projects to
pique a child’s interest.
4-H members start out by joining a club.
Madison County has more than 30 community
clubs from which to choose, scattered
throughout the county in London, West Jefferson,
Plain City and Mount Sterling.
All adult club advisors go through training
and a background check. Their job is to
help youths grow into responsible, skilled
adults by assisting them with their projectwork
and providing opportunities to learn
and engage with their peers.
Clubs offer at least six regular meetings
throughout the year in addition to other experiential
learning experiences. At club
meetings, members discuss business while
including time for education and recreation.
Every club contributes to the community
with a project, such as collecting donations
or donating time to fixing up an area park
or the fairgrounds.
Once a member joins a club, they can
choose their projects. Members can review
and purchase books at the Madison County
Extension Office. Another way to easily preview
the project books and resources is to
visit projectcentral.ohio4h.org. You can preview
the book pages and read reviews on
projects from other 4-H members and family
members.
As a member, you can participate in
many other county, state and national opportunities.
Madison County hosts a county
wide 4-H camp, demonstration contests,
judging opportunities and clinics.
At the state level, your child can participate
in state-wide camps related to forestry,
shooting sports, STEM (science, technology,
engineering and math), and even a sea
camp. The options are literally endless for
what your can do in 4-H; every child paves
their own path through 4-H.
Madison County’s deadline to join 4-H is
March 15 to be eligible to participate in the
Madison County Junior Fair. To enroll in a
4-H project and competitive events, a child
must be 8 years old and in the third grade
or 9 years old through the age of 19 as of
Jan. 1 of the current year. Any child that is
age 5 and in kindergarten through second
grade can enroll as a Cloverbud.
Forestry and Wildlife Camp. They kept us
really busy.
The first night we ate dinner while meeting
the other campers at a dance and moved
into the bunk rooms. The next morning, we
woke up and ate breakfast. After that, we
went fishing for an hour and once that was
over, we went on a nature hike to Canter’s
Cave and learned about a few types of trees
along the way.
Then we went tree climbing which was
my favorite because we climbed high up into
trees. They put us in harnesses, and then
we clicked into ropes that were already up
in the trees. We had to slowly pull ourselves
up high into the trees. I’d love to do that
again. After that, we milled boards of lumber,
and we each even got to bring one
home. They look really cool.
After lunch, we got to try radio telemetry
which is where you try to find trackers that
are hidden using a handheld device. We also
treated hemlock trees for the hemlock wooly
adelgid, a pest that recently made its way
into Ohio and is starting to kill the hemlocks
like the emerald ash borer did to all of
the ash trees.
We learned about some wild plants that
you can eat and how to identify them. The
final activities before dinner on Saturday
were shooting blow darts and animal identification.
(No, we didn’t shoot the blow
darts at animals). After dinner we had another
line and square dance which was a lot
of fun! After dark we went on a night owl
calling hike followed by a fire and then we
went to bed, exhausted.
The food was great and all of the counselors
and adults running the camp were
very knowledgeable. On the final morning,
we played some games and ate breakfast
and packed up to go home.
I plan to go back to this camp, and maybe
someday I can be a counselor.
At Canter’s Cave Forestry Camp, there
was too much to enjoy, from identifying edible
nuts and berries to a traditional Native
American campfire. It was so much fun.
When I first arrived, I was nervous but
once I met my cabinmates and counselors, I
did not know why I was scared in the first
place. The first morning, we awoke and
walked to the lodge for breakfast. After that,
we walked to our tribes and began activities.
The first activity was fishing. We
grabbed rods, bated hooks and caught loads
of fish. Then we went on a tree identification
hike to Canter’s Cave where we learned how
to identify hemlock, white oak, beech and
hickory trees. We climbed trees with a rope
and pulley mechanism. Afterward, we sang
Madison County 4-Her Nathan Lohrer
Forestry and Wildlife Camp.
camp songs to the sawmill where we cut our
own planks of wood. We walked to lunch
and scarfed food down as fast as humanly
possible to get to our afternoon activities.
Once we finished lunch, we hiked to a radio
telemetry course where we found trackers
that played the hot and cold game to find.
We then skipped to a course where we
learned what a hemlock woolly adelgid is
and what it could do to out ecosystem if it is
not controlled. We then wandered to an offtrail
nature hike where we identified edible
nuts and berries, which was my favorite
part. When we completed our survival, we
journeyed a short distance to an animal
identification course where we learned how
to shoot a blow-dart gun and set several different
kinds of traps.
We walked the 50 yards back to the lodge
where we achieved supper and waited for
night to fall, then we went on an owl calling
expedition to Boone’s Cave and told stories
in the dark. We raced back to our cabins, fell
asleep, woke the next morning and drove
home.
I will be attending next year and hope
that others will join me.
Hello! I am Olivia Rinesmith. I am
4-H for 14 years in the Fairfield Rascals
4-H Club.
The impact 4-H has had on my life
family for as long as I can remember.
Throughout my years in 4-H, I
is magnificent. I love this organization,
and I will always cherish it. My
have been very active. I’ve gone to 4-
whole family has been in 4-H for the
I love participating in Rally
breeding ewes and alpacas.
and was part of many other committees. My grandfather
was the one that got into livestock, so my brother
I have held several offices for my club, including
health reporter, recreation leader, and treasurer for and I followed in his footsteps. My mother showed and
member on the Ohio 4-H Teen Leaders Council. I am My background of 4-H is so strong, and I believe it
the 2019 Madison County Junior Fair queen. I have absolutely
loved traveling to different fairs, being in paations.
Another reason why I love and appreciate this
should continue to be a tradition for many more generrades,
and competing in the All Ohio Fair Queen amazing program is because it has given me so many
Contest, placing in the Top 15. I can’t wait to see what friends, great memories, and amazing life skills that I
the rest of my reign has in store, as well as my last year will forever have with me. I have made so many lifelong
of showing.
friends throughout my experience so far. Whether it’s
Most people think that to be in 4-H is to just show at camp, club meetings, fair, or having the animal pens
and raise livestock, but it’s so much more than that. The next to each other, you meet so many new people that
projects stretch from the interests of robotics and cooking
all the way to market hogs and equine. Yes, 4-H can 4-H has given me skills like dedication, responsibility
you will never be alone.
be all about livestock, but that isn’t everyone’s interest, and hard work. To follow through with any project, it
and that’s perfectly fine.
takes a lot of responsibility for filling out your book and
4-H has so many varieties of projects so that everyone
can take something that is the perfect project for animal and make sure it has the main things it needs,
especially taking care of your animal. To care for your
them. These projects aren’t like school projects that it takes lots of work. These skills are beneficial for
most of us don’t want to do because they aren’t fun or everyone because you need these to survive in your life.
because they aren’t interesting. These projects get kids I wouldn’t be who I am today, or even know what I
involved in things that interest them and get them to want to do with my life if it wasn’t for 4-H.
The Ohio 4-H program is known for its leadership in
building strong youth development programs across the
nation. The 4-H Cloverbud program exists as a distinctive
component within the total4-H youth development
program. It is designed as a non-formal approach to developing
the confidence, social skills, decision making
abilities, subject matter knowledge and physical skills
of kindergarten through second-grade youth.
As youth begin their 4-H Cloverbud experience, they
take part in a unique blend of activities and opportunities
specially designed for their age level. Membership
eligibility for the 4-H Cloverbud Program begins when
a child has reached the age of 5 and is enrolled in
kindergarten as of Jan. 1 of the current 4-H year.
Formal implementation of kindergarten through second-grade
4-H programs began in 1994 with the approval
of a state policy and philosophical statement by
the Ohio State University Extension administrative
cabinet. It was at this time that “Cloverbuds” became
the official name given to all 4-H members K-2 in all 88
Ohio counties.
Cloverbud activities come from the Cloverbud activity
manual, which is a series of lessons that address
subjects including citizenship, expressive arts, the environment,
personal development, and plant and animal
science. The Cloverbud program is geared toward active
learning and is based on age appropriate research, and
involves cooperative, experiential and noncompetitive
activities.
Cloverbuds are encouraged to exhibit a display from
their approved curriculum at the county fair. However,
Cloverbud exhibitions are non-competitive and for exhibition
only. A Cloverbud “show-n-tell” is an example
of how youth can feel a part of the fair without being
competitive. Cloverbuds putting an activity on display
receive a special Cloverbud ribbon.
This year’s Cloverbud “show-n-tell” is set for 7 p.m.
July 13 in the Della Selsor Building at the Madison
County Fairgrounds. To learn more about your child becoming
a Cloverbud, call the OSU Extension office at
4-H Camp Clifton is located next to John Bryan State Park, 12
miles south of Springfield in Greene County. It is just off of Clifton
Road near the Clifton Mill.
While at camp, campers live in one of 22 rustic cabins with 10 to
12 campers and trained counselors. A modern kitchen and central
dining hall provide campers with nutritious meals. A large openair
lodge and a large swimming pool provide recreational activities.
Other facilities include the Nature Center, Craft Hall, canteen,
campfire circle, high ropes, team challenge course and sports fields.
Who can attend camp?
Camp is open to youths who 8 years old and in third grade
the same age are welcome to attend camp for an additional fee.
How much will it cost?
The cost is $230 per 4-H camper. The fee for youths who are in
4-H is $250. A discounted fee is offered to campers of families living
under the same household wishing to send more than one family
member. Some special events come with fees. The all-camp picture
is optional to purchase at the time of registration.
Is financial assistance available?
Scholarships are available through the Madison County 4-H Advisory
Committee. Applicants must write a 200-word essay explaining
why they are requesting a scholarship and why they wish to
attend camp. The camper must be a current member enrolled in the
Madison County 4-H program.
Stretch yourself at 4-H Camp.
When do I register for camp?
Camp registration forms and deadline information
will be posted online at
madison.osu.edu in April. Campers are accepted
on a first come, first served basis
until camp is full. Campers are considered
registered when all forms are completed and
a payment has been made. Early registration
is encouraged to secure the workshops
and special event activities you’d like to participate
in.
How can I receive a camp registration
letter?
Madison-Plains FFA earns awards for excellence
By Hayden Howard, reporter, and
Allison Dudgeon, assistant reporter
Madison-Plains FFA
For the last year, the Madison-Plains
FFA secretary, treasurer and reporter have
been collecting records and photos for their
officer books.
The secretary’s book holds records of all
chapter activities, such as agendas, member
involvement, thank-you cards and correspondence.
The treasurer’s book holds all financial
records, such as our chapter bank
account, receipts, and withdrawal and deposit
forms. The reporter’s book keeps a
record of chapter activities and events
through photos, captions and news articles.
The sub-district evaluation took place on
Jan. 27 at Tecumseh High School. All books
advanced to districts but still needed a lot of
corrections before the next round. The district
evaluation took place on Feb. 3. All of the officers
received gold ratings on their books.
Other FFA advisors and representatives
from the Ohio Department of Education
grade the officer books. These three books
also help our chapter apply for the National
Chapter Award which is a high honor in the
National FFA Organization.
On May 3 at the Ohio FFA State Convention,
the officers will receive gold pins in
recognition of their hard work.
These books teach students how to keep
accurate records, organizational skills and
networking skills. All of these are 21st century
skills that will prepare students for college,
trade school or the workforce.
Parliamentary Procedure
Parliamentary Procedures (parli pro) is
a Career Development Event where team
members are judged on public speaking
skills, debate, proper use of parliamentary
procedure, and parliamentary procedure
knowledge. The president, or chairman, is
judged on the ability to preside, among
other skills.
On Nov. 19, 2019, the Madison-Plains
Career Development contests
The Madison-Plains FFA Chapter is
gearing up for spring Career Development
Event (CDE) contests and many other exciting
events.
The six spring CDE teams in which
chapter members are participating are
meat judging, general livestock judging,
equine judging, dairy handling, dairy cattle
judging and poultry judging. These contests
teach students valuable skills, such as how
to evaluate live animals and carcasses. Students
also have to grade hay and identify
different types of tack, plants and breeds.
Optional contests that provide good practice
included the Wilmington Department of
Agriculture’s annual Aggies Contest, held
on March 4 at the Clark County Fairgrounds.
It includes general livestock judging,
equine judging and dairy cattle judging.
On March 7, Marysville High School and
Champaign County FFA hosted the
Marysville Invitational, open to all members
involved in meat judging, general livestock
judging, equine judging, dairy
handling, and poultry judging CDEs.
Members put in a lot of studying and
after-school practice time in preparation for
these contests.
In addition to participating in contests,
Madison-Plains FFA members sold new
products in their spring fundraiser. Instead
of strawberries, they sold nuts through the
Florida Farm Bureau ands beef jerky, beef
sticks and summer sausage rolls (made with
100 percent beef, no pork) from an Ohio
company. All profits from the sale go back
to students to help pay for FFA Camp, conventions,
CDEs and trips.
The chapter will participate in “Drive
Your Tractor to School Day” on March 24.
Students are asked to show off their favorite
tractor brand by wearing attire with the
brand logo. Students will arrive at the high
school at 6:30 a.m. and take a group photo
with their tractors. This is a special event to
showcase farming families in the community.
Madison-Plains FFA members who earned State Degrees include: (from left) junior
Alyson Petee and seniors Abigail Holbert, Macy Burchett, Wyatt Eades, Chase Kelly and
Jarrett Vallery.

By Sydney Pollard, reporter
London FFA
Members of London High School’s FFA
chapter stay busy year-round with competitions,
fundraisers, awareness efforts and
more.
Ag Sales Contest
Members D.J. Covert, Cade Smith, Addison
Leach and Brooks Barber competed at
the District Ag Sales Career Development
Event (CDE) held at Buckeye Valley High
School.
Each student did a presentation about
park benches. Participants had to give a 15-
minute sales pitch to two judges. Then, as a
group, they had to complete a team
practicum related to a pre-sales call scenario.
Prior to the contest, the team completed
an online general knowledge test regarding
agricultural sales and service. London’s
team placed fifth.
Spring Greenhouse Sale
London’s ag business class is preparing
for this year’s greenhouse sale. Students are
learning about business planning, plant selection
and care and greenhouse management
during this project.
The sale is a fundraising project managed
by the ag business class to support
London’s agricultural education program.
New this year, each student will take responsibility
for a different variety of plants.
The chapter is collaborating with London
Florist on plant selection and car and,
therefore, will be selling a larger variety of
vegetables, as well as flowers.
The greenhouse sale kicks off in late
April and continues through the month of
May.
Job Interview Contest
Nick Berchtold, Addison Leach, Brooklyn
Sims and Briana Peterman represented
London FFA at the Sub-District Job Interview
Contest.
In this contest, students are asked to
submit a cover letter, resume and job application
for an agriculture-related career.
Then, each student demonstrates his or her
interview skills by going through a mock job
interview. Lastly, they must write a thankyou
letter.
Sophomore Brooklyn Sims placed first in
her division at the sub-district level and advanced
to the district level, where she
placed fourth.
Celebrating National FFA Week
London FFA celebrated National FFA
Week, Feb. 18-21. The week embraced more
than 85 years of FFA traditions at London
while looking forward to the organization’s
future. More than 75 members participated
in National FFA Week activities. These
members have a passion for agriculture.
Designated in 1947, the week of George
Washington’s birthday, National FFA Week
London FFA members (from left) Trystan Meddock and Katie Huddleston
greenhouse sale.
London FFA ag sales team–(from left) D.J. Covert, Cade Smith,
Addison Leach and Brooks Barber–placed fifth at the District Ag
Sales Career Development Event.
gives FFA members an opportunity to educate the public about agriculture.
Chapters conduct a variety of activities to help others in
their school and community learn about FFA and agricultural education.
In celebration of FFA Week, students participate in fun activities,
including the M&M challenge, milk chug, egg toss, and creeper
races. Each day, students learn about a different field of agriculture.
On the egg toss day, students learned that Ohio is No. 2 in the country
for egg production. Additionally, there were school-wide spirit
activities, including Hat Day, Western Wednesday, FFA Blue and
Gold Day, and Freedom Friday.
The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal
growth and career success training through agricultural education
to more than 700,000 student members who belong to 8,600 FFA
chapters throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S.
Virgin Islands. The organization is also supported by more than 8
million alumni members.

purchased the following
classifieds. Determining
the value of their service
or product is advised by
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
not offer “employment”
but rather supply the
readers with manuals, directories
and other materials
designed to help
their clients establish mail
order selling and other
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
license ID or credit card
numbers. Also beware of
ads that claim to guarantee
loans regardless of
credit and note that if a
credit repair company
does business only over
the phone it’s illegal to request
any money before
delivering its service. All
funds are based in US
dollars. Toll Free numbers
may or may not
reach Canada. Please
check with the Better
