BACKYARD CRITTERS
SELWYN TIMES
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects
and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species
found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public
awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us.
Beautiful beetles but
savage predators
THE harlequin ladybird
(Harmonia axyridis) is a
nasty predator that was
first found in Auckland
in 2016 and has spread
through the North Island
and as far as Central Otago
in the South Island.
The 5-8mm long ladybird
is a native of eastern
and central Asia. It is
round to oval in shape,
domed and extremely variable
in colour and patterns.
Spots on ladybirds can
range in number from zero
to 22 , while colours range
from yellow-orange and
black. The thorax often has
black spots in the shape of
an ‘M’ or ‘W’.
The problem with this
species overseas is that
it has displaced native
ladybirds and could do the
same here.
The harlequin ladybird
contains a distasteful and
pungent chemical that it
uses in defence against
PRETTY: The harlequin ladybird could displace
native species and produces a pungent chemical
that can affect grape crops during harvest.
predators when threatened.
This can be an issue
when the ladybirds hide
amongst grapes during
harvest as the chemical
can taint the taste.
They overwinter as
adults in sheltered locations,
sometimes in
large groups and emerge
when temperatures reach
12 deg C.
Females lay between 20-
30 yellow eggs per day and
can produce as many as
3800 eggs in a lifetime.
