Wednesday March 11 2020 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz BAY HARBOUR PAGE 3 News Bid for lookout over harbour • By Matt Slaughter A $370,000 lookout is being proposed for the car park opposite the Sign of the Bellbird in Kennedys Bush with a view of Lyttelton Harbour. The Summit Road Society is currently consulting the public on the proposal to decide on a finalised option which it will put forward to the city council for consideration. It has secured more than half of the funds needed to build the lookout through a combination of its own funds and a $150,000 grant from the city council. Options for gaining the rest of the funding are being investigated, including setting up a Givealittle page in the near future. Said the society’s secretary Marie Gray: “What we’re proposing is a low stone wall which is in the style of Harry Ell’s rest houses . . . some steps, a lookout platform, all complemented by native planting and also disability access around the side.” Harry Ell was a city councillor and member of Parliament in the early 1900s. His grandson John Jameson founded the Summit Road Society in 1948 and the lookout will be named after Mr Jameson if it is approved. CHOPPER ATTENDS FIRE A helicopter helped extinguish a scrub fire in Barnett Park, Redcliffs, on Friday. Crews from Sumner, Woolston and the central station were called to the blaze on the hillside, which was about 200 sq m in size, at 5.21pm. Crews left the scene about 7.40pm.
