Sumner surfers should feature
in Duke Festival of Surfing

SUMNER SURFERS are
expected to have a big impact
during The Ray White New
Brighton Duke Festival
of Surfing from Friday to
Sunday.
On Friday, the shortboard
surfing begins with the under-12
years events in which
Poppy Entwistle and Benji
Lowen are expected to do well
in the girls and boys finals.
In the under-14 age group
Jack Tyro in the boys and
Amelie Clark in the girls are
likely finalists as well.
These surfers will be accompanied
by several other
Sumner grommets who are
members of The Point Surf
Team.
The much-coveted Duke
Trophy along with accompanying
prizes are all part of the
rewards for surfing the sometimes,
difficult conditions
New Brighton beach beside
the pier often produces.
Top New Zealand surfer
Estella Hungerford who has
strong links to Sumner will be
helping some inexperienced
surfers with new skills about
surfing around the pier which
can be known for its rips on
an out-going tide.
On Saturday morning the
longboard competitions will
begin and Sumner surfers are
expected to provide finalists in
nearly every division.
Casper McCormick, Luke
O’Neil, Seb Johnson are all locals
who could make the Open
Longboard final which is one
of The Duke’s premier events.
Others who could well be
winners are Steve Andrews in
the 50s and Grant Cochrane
in the over 60s men’s sections.
Sumner longboarders,
Lucy Temoananui, Lucy
Johnson, Minnie Robberds
and Anneliese Coberger and
Brittany Andrews could also
find themselves in a number
of finals.
Sumner is so rich in top
longboarders that they could
quite easily have finalists in
every section.
A dark horse could be Ambrose
McNeill who will return

divisions before running his
‘Single Fin Mingle’ contest the
following week.
Several Australian surfers
are crossing the Tasman and
some top young North Island
juniors are also chasing points
on the New Zealand Surfing
Circuit.
The festival comes to a
close on Sunday with the
prize-giving at which about
70 trophies will be awarded in
different divisions.
