Treaty ground celebration idea
Bid to start
fund to get
residents to
Waitangi Day
event
• By Matt Slaughter
A FUND could be set up
by the Spreydon-Cashmere
Community
Board for
residents
to attend
Waitangi Day
celebrations
at the treaty
grounds.
City council
staff have
Karolin Potter
received a
request from
the board for
advice on options for providing
this fund. A city council spokesman
did not say where the
money for the fund will come
from if it is set up and this will
depend on options provided by
staff.
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board chairwoman Karolin
Potter suggested the idea of
the fund at the board’s March
3 meeting, telling members
they have treaty obligations in
the decisions they make and it
would be good to do more to
honour this.
Ms Potter did not comment
on the idea when asked by
Board member Keir
Leslie said in spite of the
commemorations at Waitangi
being “particularly special,”
there are lots of very meaningful
events on Waitangi Day in
Christchurch.
Mr Leslie likes the idea of
helping to bring residents
closer to the treaty but said the
wishes of Maori in Waitangi
and Christchurch should also
be considered before the board
commits to anything.
“I think it is a really interesting
idea, obviously. I think there’s
lots of potential and I think
it’s one of the things that
community boards should
be doing, is promoting youth
SIGNIFICANT:
A fund could
Waitangi Day
council staff
support the
idea.
leadership, particularly, and
youth engagement and that kind
of civic life in New Zealand, so
I think it’s a really good idea, it’s
just how do we work through
the process and get an outcome
that’s best for everyone,” he said.
Said fellow board member
Callum Stewart-Ward: “Budget
is always a consideration but we
have discretionary funding for
the purpose of promoting the
well-being of our community
and we use that money all the
time for things like sports trips
or cultural events and I think
that in principle, this idea just
fits very neatly within the arena
of the discretionary fund that
we already have.”
Linwood
pool a
step closer
THE DESIGN of the new $22
million Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood
Pool has moved to the next stage.
The community can expect to
see the project begin on-site in July.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board chairwoman
Sally Buck said the pool project is
on track to be finished by summer
2021-22.
A sod-turning ceremony will
be held ahead of work starting in
Linwood Park on the corner of
Linwood Ave and Smith St, where
the pool complex will be built.
Apollo Projects will carry out
the construction, after doing the
same for Taiora QEII Recreation
and Sport Centre in 2018. It has
also been the lead contractor on
the New Brighton hot pools – He
Puna Taimoana, which are scheduled
to open next month.
Said Ms Buck: “Apollo Projects
has already delivered a first-class
facility in the east and is wellplaced
to bring the Linwood Pool
design to life.
“From day one, Te Pou Toetoe:
Linwood Pool has been a
community-driven project, with
input from people of all ages
throughout the Linwood and
Woolston area,” she said.
