Linton was remanded in
custody to April 8 when he is
expected to apply for bail.
It is alleged after crashing into
several vehicles on Wrights Rd,
he stole the Hyundai and was
pursued across the city by police.
One of the cars hit was parked
on Wrights Rd, while its owner
panel-beater Daniel Johnston
was at work.
The Holden Commodore had
just been repaired. It was not
insured, said Mr Johnston.

Roundabouts approved
for deadly intersections

TWO DEADLY intersections
just south of Christchurch will
get roundabouts in a bid to make
them safer.
Dual-lane roundabouts have
been approved by the Selwyn
District Council for the intersections
of Springs and Marshs Rds
and Shands and Blakes Rds in
Prebbleton.
They are expected to be substantially
complete by 2021.
The Shands and Blakes Rds
intersection was named one of the
worst in Canterbury in 2018 based
on crash statistics.
There have been two fatal
crashes, one serious, and nine
minor at the intersection since
2011. Two people died in a crash
there in February 2018.
There has also been one
serious crash and two non-injury
crashes at the intersection.
The construction contract will
now be tendered and procurement
of detailed designs will begin.
A report presented at the
meeting said: “Detailed design
work needs to be advanced
without further delay so the
project can be substantially
completed by mid-2021,” it said.

is leading to an increase in safety
issues, particularly for traffic
turning out of Marshs Rd.”
The work on the two roundabouts
is expected to cost $9.3
million with 75 per cent of that
subsidised by the New Zealand
Transport Agency.
The city council and the Selwyn
District Council will split the remaining
25 per cent for the Springs
and Marshs Rds intersection.
The Selwyn District Council
will solely fund the remaining
25 per cent for the Shands and
Blakes Rds intersection.
In June last year, it was revealed
the intersections did not qualify
for funding due to shortfalls.
The projects remained on
the national land transport
programme list and the district
council was told the funding
has been approved after further
work was undertaken on
evaluating them.
