EDITOR’S NOTE
GLAM
IT UP!
This month, we have decided to bring the glam to you! And what better
way to do so than dedicating our cover to Datin Suryani Ahmad Sarji?
Despite a corporate and accounting background, Datin Suryani lives and
breathes fashion and everything luxurious. Read what she has to say about
what defines a true fashionista; but she goes deeper than that and gives us
her views about life in general and how to be a successful lady.
If you flip through our pages, you will be able to discover our home
feature. This month, we have opened our pages to Hermès furniture. With
180 years of experience, the French brand continues to prove that skills
and dedication remain high in demand. With iconic pieces like The Carre
or the legendary Birkin, Hermès is the epitome of luxurious.
Glam is often associated with music. If Boy George invented the concept
of ‘glam rock’, an iconic artist took it to new dimensions. Recently passed
away, David Bowie was the revolution that the industry needed forty years
ago. Entertainer, activist, artist, fashion idol; you name it, Bowie did it. I
don’t believe the Game Changer has ever been this relevant.
Our golfing destination takes you to the US this month - Idaho, to be
precise. The Coeur d’Alene Golf Course is one-of-a-kind with worldrenowned
facilities and its ticket to stardom - its 14th ‘floating’ hole. Yes,
you read that right. A floating hole!
On the property front, we briefly retrace Tropicana’s journey towards
becoming a leader in the industry and its current focus on developments
such as Tropicana Aman, Tropicana Heights and Tropicana Metropark.
Tropicana has also been active on the community front with donations to
various charitable organisations and even participating in a charity run.
We tremendously enjoyed putting this magazine together as usual. And I
do hope you will get as much pleasure reading it as we did creating it.
Long live the Glam!
SEXY FOR SATIN
Satin is going casual as this soft-to-touch material gets
draped into blouses, dresses and tailored shorts to be worn
outside the bedroom. Though satin oozes sex appeal, 3.1
Phillip Lim is giving it an edgier, younger touch with
impeccable draping and streamlined silhouettes. The
garments are shaded in jewel tones, reminiscent of sapphires
and aquamarines, for added luxury.
5. LACE
UP
Alexander McQueen is known for its edgy designs
and its signature usage of skulls on everything from
jewellery to scarves. However, their latest footwear
collection gets a dose of sexy romanticism with lace
cutouts that smartly use the skull designs in a subtle
way. Stand-out colours include coral, which can give a
trendy lift to any summer outfit.
VEGE(BOTTLE)
The Hermѐs Cologne family is expanding
their family of scents and putting a
different spin on ‘fresh’ by making it more
vegetal than citrus. Perfumer Christine
Nagel was inspired by the two-fold duality
of the rhubarb, which gives off a crisp
yet velvety scent. The result is the Eau de
rhubarb écarlate, which yields a scent of
refined white musk.
BLOOMING WITH ELEGANCE
Playfulness, optical illusions and a whole lot of
sparkle make the limited edition Marguerite
timepiece by Christophe Claret an ideal companion
for ladies that like drama and romance. A daisy
petal with a ruby centre makes up the nucleus of the
face, while the delicate butterflies act as the hands
of the watch. A surprise is present in the message ‘il
m’aime passionnément’ (he loves me passionately)
WORDS KARIN CHAN PHOTOGRAPHS HERMÈS
AFTER 180 YEARS, HERMÈS CONTINUES TO PROVE THAT THE SKILLS AND
DEDICATION OF EXPERIENCED ATELIERS REMAIN IN HIGH DEMAND –
WHETHER IT’S IN THE FORM OF ARM CANDY OR HOME FURNISHINGS.
54 TM | MAY/JUNE 2016

“It is also a
testament to the
power of brand
recognition that
even the first letter
of the Hermès brand
is an icon in itself’’
Hermès has long been a brand synonymous with luxury, exclusivity and detail. Even
after six generations that span 180 years, the brand’s focus continues to be firmly
upon high quality and excellent craftsmanship, maintaining experienced ateliers that
combine hours of dedication with skill honed through the years to finish a single item.
Such is the quality of their work that the brand’s iconic Birkin bag, which comes in
luggage or tote form and is considered ultra-exclusive when created with saltwater
crocodile skin (the red crocodile purse bag version retails for $203,150), has been
said by luxury online retail site Baghunter to be a more worthwhile investment than
putting your money in the S&P 500 stock index or gold. Over 35 years, the study
found that the value of the bags increased by over 500 per cent!
Inspired by and named after the stylish English actress Jane Birkin, Hermès’ Birkin bag
is famous all over the world and has long been a staple on the arms of A-list celebrities
like Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez. However, the beautiful craftsmanship
of Hermès extends far beyond its handbags; with its extensive collection of home
furnishings, now you can enjoy being surrounded by its iconic style in the comfort
of your own home.
colours and symbols
Hermès originally began in the early 1800s as a shop that sold
harnesses and saddles; therefore, in honour of its equestrian
heritage, the brand regularly features horse and horse-related
motifs in its products, ranging from realistic renditions of equines
to repetitions of simple horseshoes. Some stunning examples from
past collections include the mahogany Arion horse sculpture or
its Samarcande counterpart in marble or wood.
The brand is also famous for its signature orange-and-black
palette, so much so that their particular hue of orange is
actually labelled ‘Hermès orange’. The vivid colour inspires
home furnishing trends just as much as it does on the runway,
particularly as wallpaper in dining rooms or as a signature piece
(such as a couch) in a living room; naturally, there is no shortage
of options from the brand itself with previous productions
including items like ottomans, chaise lounges and more all
featuring that distinctive shade.
It is also a testament to the power of brand recognition that even
the first letter of the Hermès brand is an icon in itself. Stylised
repetitions of its signature ‘H’ can be found on everything from
placemats and napkins to bangles and wallpapers, delivering a
more discreet injection of Hermès class into your home.
Clockwise from top left −
Hermès makes a discreet
yet classy statement draped
over a couch; the ‘Leopard
fancy fabrics
Besides bags, Hermès is also well known for the quality of
its screen-printed silk scarves, which have become musthave
style items since they were spotted adorning the necks
of fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly.
Bursting with creative motifs drawn from flora, fauna,
mythology and more, they are so pretty that if you would
rather just look at them instead, you can purchase them in
framed form to hang up in your home like the works of art
they are – just like Ivanka Trump.
In a 2011 article by ELLE DECOR, Hélène Dubrule, general
director of Hermès’ home division said: “We had so many
clients ask us to do our silk and cashmere prints as fabrics
and cushions, we thought it made sense to put some into
production. We are giving our customers a chance to live in
Hermès.”
The aesthetics of Hermès’ fabric offerings have long been a
point of admiration, and in recent times you have been able
to drape your home in with sets of bed linens in jacquard silk
and cotton, blankets of coral handwoven cashmere and more.
You could plaster your indoors with illustrative wallpaper
prints that have equestrian motifs or take it outside and cover
your garden furniture with its Outdoor collection of wearresistant
materials.
set the table
Traditionally, fine china is used to impress dinner guests, and
it simply does not get more exclusive than Hermès’ collections.
The brand has featured a number of jaw-droppingly beautiful
porcelain series, including the Carnets d’ Equateur, a wildlifefocused
collection that highlights the work of naturalist and
painter Robert Dallet; H Deco, a tea service showcasing the
beauty of Art Deco wrought-iron friezes and more.
Just as Hermès is known for bringing the best out of leather, they
have also treated delicate crystal with the reverence it deserves – to
scintillating results. Previous creations like the Iskender line had a
selection of hand-crafted crystal drinking glasses that catered for
everything from vodka and whisky to beer and rum, as well as ice
buckets and decanters; meanwhile, the jazz-inspired Adage range
favoured round, full forms in coasters, water jugs and vases.
If you were looking to adorn your work desk instead, Hermès
once engineered desk sets that included printed calfskin desk
blotters, solid mahogany paperweights carved in elephant or
horse head forms and more.
It seems clear that no matter the age, exclusivity and premium
craftsmanship will always be highly valued. Certainly, no one
knows that better than Hermès, who has already stood the test
of time - and will continue to do so.
Tropicana has been a leader in the property industry
for over 20 years, especially with its role as a pioneer of
the residential resort-style living concept embodied by
Tropicana Golf & Country Resort as well as the Tropicana
Indah Resort Homes. Its success boils down to a unique
DNA that powers the heart of all its ambitious projects
– a potent combination of accessibility, connectivity,
innovative concepts and designs, generous open spaces,
amenities, facilities, multi-tiered security and quality.
Going forward, Tropicana aims to strengthen its pledge
as a community builder that delivers complete lifestyle
environments and optimised value by continuing to
focus on its major integrated developments. Guided
by Tropicana’s revolutionary DNA, the transformation
process has already begun with several large sites
beginning to blossom into vibrant, self-contained
townships where residences and commercial
components co-exist in harmony alongside facilities like
schools, parks and more.
At the heart of Tropicana’s current focus are its newly
launched landed properties in order to address and
fulfill market demand. While Tropicana’s reach is far
and wide with various developments in Penang, Johor
and even Sabah in East Malaysia, the spotlight falls on
its projects in the Klang Valley: Tropicana Aman in Kota
Kemuning (www.tropicanaaman.com.my), Tropicana
Metropark in Subang Jaya (www.tropicanametropark.
com.my)and Tropicana Heights (www.tropicanaheights.
com) in Kajang.
Each of these developments has a distinctive character
tempered by Tropicana’s signature resort-style
living ideal, strategically placed with easy access to
transportation and major highways, large green Central
Parks and a host of facilities and amenities close at hand.
Tropicana Heights features lakeside condominiums and
parkview homes beside Kajang’s largest park, Tropicana
Metropark is well-connected to KTM stations and will
have a direct link flyover from the Federal Highway,
while Tropicana Aman is a relaxed ‘green’ township
that has a 7km walking and biking trail to promote
with Phases 1 and 2 all successfully launched to date,
with that in mind, the Tropicana Foundation recently
donated RM10,000 to the National Cancer Society
Ang Pow
GOLF COMPETITION
TROPICANA GOLF & COUNTRY RESORT
27 FEBRUARY 2016
A massive crowd of 132 golfers turned up for the February (Ang
Pow) monthly medal at Tropicana Golf and Country Resort. There
was something special in the air, as anyone who wore something red
received a special “Ang Pow” before they teed off.
Although the crowd was large, the pin positions not easy, the course
hard and dry and the green speed 10.5 feet on the stimpmeter, all of it
did not hinder the pace of play.
Congratulations to PS Ting (12) 37 OCB stableford points, pipping VW
Chia (12) 37 to the A medal champion. It was also a close affair with KC
Tang (17) 37 stableford points getting his nose in front by a point over
Sieh Joo Chyn (17) 36 OCB winning that count back over Lam Foo
Keong in the B Medal. However, in the C medal these winners saw
something they liked on the course and shot the daylight out as Yong
Kee Seng (24) scored a massive 43 stableford points and took away
the C medal ahead of Yun Hun Suck (20) 42 points who also had a
great round.
In the ladies division, it was a whitewash as Haryanti (22) blew the
competition out of the water with 46 stableford points ahead of
Fiona Parker (27) and Joyce Ong (21), who both scored an identical
38 points.
Congratulations to all the winners.
Many people might think a MAD Charity Showcase might mean a
night of endless craziness, but guess again; MAD simply stands for
Make A Difference, and indeed the night was meant for a good cause
for Rumah Sri Eden, school for the gifted. Rumah Sri Eden caters for
children with diverse learning difficulties due to behaviour problems,
disorders or other underlying problems such as being diagnosed with
disorders that inhibit their learning processes like Autism, Down’s
Syndrome, Mental Retardation and Dyslexia.
The man behind the fundraising event is a regular golf member at
Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, Mr. Jack Tan; or, as many tend to
nickname him, MAD Jack.
4
The event was indeed a grand moment for TGCR to start the year
with. From food to the night‘s entertaiment, it was just one long
endless “WOW”.
Themed “Samba Nite”, guests came all dressed to impress. Non-stop
entertainment during the evening was provided by international
dancers, singers, a violinist, and even perfomances from TGCR
management and staff.
Several charity auctions took place throughout the event. At the
end of the night, the event managed to raise more than RM300,000
for Rumah Sri Eden. WOW! Thank you Jack for showing us that
everyone can make a difference.
DESPITE HER CORPORATE AND ACCOUNTING BACKGROUND, DATIN SURYANI
AHMAD SARJI’S TRUE PASSION HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN ALL THINGS LUXURY AND
FASHION – WHICH MADE HER THE PERFECT PERSON TO SHARE HER THOUGHTS
WITH US ON GLAMOUR AND BEAUTY.
AN INTERVIEW BY KAVITHA SEHERAN PHOTOGRAPHS BRIAN FANG / M8 STUDIO
ART DIRECTION NOR HAMIMAH ABDULLAH HAIR & MAKE-UP ALVIN LOH
Tell me a little bit about yourself. Where did you come from, and what do you do?
I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur. I furthered my studies in the United Kingdom by
pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. To cut it short, I spent four years in Petronas,
four years in Seacorp Schroders Capital Management (about eight years in the corporate
scene), and six years running my own business after that, which was a petrol station. I then
took a break as I wanted to take care of my children.
Soon after, I decided to pursue something I’ve always dreamt of doing – managing the
Chopard Boutique in Pavilion. I’ve always been a fan of Chopard and I was blessed to be
given the opportunity to run the new boutique in Pavilion. I was with them for six years
and in March, I resigned. Now I’m concentrating on my other business with a school in the
outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.
“To me, fashion is not merely following a
trend. It’s something that is current and
something from within yourself’’
Since it’s the ‘glam’ issue, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when
I say fashion?
Fashion is something that is wholesome to me. When people say fashion, it’s
everything in totality. I don’t just look at clothes – it’s everything from your
make-up and earrings down to how you carry yourself. So to me, fashion is not
merely following a trend. It’s something that is current and something from
within yourself.
How about fashion icons? Who’s your favourite?
I like Victoria Beckham! I think she is different, and I like things and people
who are different. I think she is pretty iconic since she doesn’t follow trends or
change herself. She has her own ideas on fashion, her own trends and she sticks
by it through thick or thin. It probably doesn’t appeal to the masses because it
appeals just to the skinny ones, but then again she doesn’t care – she just goes
along with it.
Speaking of trends, what is the one trend you would like to bring back?
Pantsuits. I think they are really underrated and you don’t find many around. So
I would like to bring that back. It’s very elegant and cute at the same time. It can
come in many forms too, like the Palazzo pantsuit. For that matter, I even like
dungarees, so I would bring those back too.
What’s the easiest season to be fashionable in?
I think it has to be spring because it’s a combination of warm clothes in casual,
nude colour tones to a mix between that and winter fashion. The temperature
is just right for a nice mix in clothing – you can actually just wear a T-shirt and
jeans and put on a blazer on top of that.
Favourite type of shoes?
I love shoes but I don’t really have a favourite. But if I had to choose, I would
have to say wedges or platforms.
Is there a specific brand that you prefer for clothing or shoes?
Yes, Valentino for both. Otherwise, it can be any other brand from the
High Streets.
I am very particular about my shoes. Valentino is definitely the way to go. It is
very trendy, funky and comfortable. I also like YSL shoes.
When it comes to clothes, it’s a mixture of many things depending on the
reason for dressing up. So I don’t really look at particular brands when it comes
to clothes, but instead look at the functionality of the item.
72 TM | MAY/JUNE 2016

MAY/JUNE 2016 | TM 73

Do you believe that someone can be fashionable or
trendy without spending much money?
Yes, definitely! It doesn’t need to be a big brand. It can
look expensive without having to be too expensive. You
can mix-and-match and look elegant easily. However,
the look has to be complete and in sync – I don’t believe
in looking too different or eccentric.
What’s your one must-have accessory and do you
have any preferences?
I like pearls as they look very elegant. That said,
accessories have to match my look and mood as well
so I don’t limit myself. My must-haves are the Hermès
enamel Clic-Clac bangle and a good timepiece – I feel
that they just complete whatever look I go for.
I noticed you have a good complexion. What kind
of beauty regimes or tips do you practice?
I’m not really a healthy eater (laughs). Many people have
told me that I have a good complexion too and I think I can
attribute a lot of that to my genes. That said, I do take care
of my face as well but I don’t really use expensive products.
I do scrubs and masks every week. In fact, I scrub my face
every day (although it’s not advisable), while I put a mask
on my face diligently at least once or twice a week.
Do you get facials done every other week or so?
Not really. I go for facials once every three months when I
have the time. I’m not so diligent when it comes to facials
since I do masks and scrubs at home. What I practice is
that no matter how tired I am or how late it is when I get
home, even if I don’t have the energy to bathe, I ensure I
at least clean my face.
What products do you use?
Guinot. It’s a French product and I swear by it. I use it
for its masks and exfoliation. It’s available in Malaysia
but only in beauty salons. When it comes to the normal
cleaning and toning, I use NIVEA; while for creams I use
Clarins and Kiehl’s.
What do you like doing when you’re not working
or spending time with your family?
I like travelling and golf. I like Europe for its culture
and used to travel for business as Chopard is closely
associated with Europe. I also used to study in the UK
for four years so it feels like I’m going back home. My
son is also in UK now pursuing his studies. As for golf,
I come from a family of golfers, so it’s very much in
my blood.
Let’s talk Tropicana. What are your thoughts?
Over the years, we had investments in Tropicana - a
piece of land and a landed property in Green Acres
(of which resale value has been good). We are looking
forward to moving into the Golf Villas soon. I think that
says a lot about what I think of the Tropicana brand.
I like Tropicana because the quality is really good and
they come up with nice designs as well. It’s a valuefor-money
buy. The locations are usually further away
from Kuala Lumpur too, so the prices are not at such
a premium compared to those in the city centre. The
main reason for me is definitely the designs though.
They are generally more tasteful compared to other
designs in the market.
Safety is also immaculate in all their properties. Like
I mentioned, I live in Green Acres and you will never
fail to see Tropicana guarding and surrounding the
area all the time. I feel very safe, especially since my
previous job had me coming home really late at night.
The golf course is definitely a plus point too since my
whole family plays golf. I play at least once a week, so
it is very convenient for all of us. I like the ease of it all.
Everything is readily available.
You mentioned that you’re a shareholder in a
school. Is that the line of work you are thinking
of pursuing next or will you be doing other
things as well?
By default, I have to be rather involved with the school,
although it is operationally run very well. However I
do love retail luxury and have a passion for that, so I
would love to go back in that line because that’s my
forte. Right now, I’m taking a break but perhaps in
the future.
THE VACATION
Milan: More Than
BESIDES WATCHING GORGEOUS MODELS STRUT DOWN
THE RUNWAY DURING MILAN FASHION WEEK, THERE’S
A WEALTH OF ART, CULTURE, ARCHITECTURE AND
GASTRONOMY IN MILAN TO EXPLORE.
With its glorious art and architecture, it’s no wonder Milan is
the location of choice to showcase some of the most exclusive
fashion in the world during the Milan Fashion Week. Planning
a trip around Europe and happen to have Italy on your list?
Circle Milan in red ink – this world-famous metropolis is a
must-see if you love being surrounded by the sophistication of
Renaissance-era artwork.
If you are a fan of elegant old buildings, staying in a classy,
century-old hotel might intrigue you. Built in 1908, the
Sheraton Diana Majestic resides in the heart of Milan, with
the majority of its rooms furnished with antique furniture and
overlooking the main garden. The hotel once held an important
place in the heart of European history; in fact, the elite classes
of Milan used to hold exclusive outdoor parties in the garden
during the early 50s. Today, the space is used for aperitivos, or
pre-dinner drinks.
For a more contemporary touch, the ME Milan il Duca in Piazza
della Republica is a celebrity favourite with names like Paris
Hilton and Adam Levine on the guest list. Designed by worldfamous
architect Aldo Rossi, its central location just 800m away
from the ‘Fashion District’ makes it ideal for fashion addicts.
Plus, their Radio Bar on the 10th floor allows for stunning
views of Milan – and on a particularly clear day, you might even
catch a glimpse of the Italian Alps beyond the shimmering lights
of the Porta Nuova.
When it comes time to venture out and take in the sights of
the city, the best way to make sure you do not miss anything
interesting is by going on foot, allowing you the luxury of
exploring any little cafe or boutique that catches your fancy.
However, if you would like to recreate a little ‘Roman Holiday’-
esque vacation in Milan, the city’s bike sharing service – BikeMi
– is worth a try for some speedier travel.
Art is the heart and soul of the city, meaning that expansive
galleries and architectural marvels are a dime a dozen here.
Some outstanding attractions include the Gallerie d’Italia Piazza
Scala, which was rebuilt to complement the still-intact period
furnishings within and currently houses a 19th and 20th century
art exhibition – the former features masterpieces of the Duomo
(Italian cathedral church) with highlights from battle scenes
during the Risorgimento.
While you’re in Milan, make a stop at The Convent of Santa
Maria delle Grazie, where you’ll find Leonardo Da Vinci’s
famous painting of The Last Supper. What is unique about the
painting is that it is painted directly on the dining wall of the
convent using a special technique that he invented back in 1495.
However, to see this piece of art, one needs to book a good two
months ahead in order to secure a visit as only 20 to 25 people
are allowed in at a time in visiting blocks of 15 minutes.
Being the fashion capital also means that there is plenty
of shopping to be found in Milan. Designer boutiques are
everywhere to be found and the Quadrilatero d’Oro – better
known as the ‘rectangle of gold’ – in particular is a shopaholic’s
paradise. Within it, the Via Monte Napoleone is a haven for taxfree
luxury items and the Galleria Vittoria Emanuele II is one of
the world’s oldest and most glamorous malls, hosting renowned
brands such as Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and more.
MAY/JUNE 2016 | TM 81

Shopping and sightseeing is a great way to work up an appetite
for a great meal at some of the city’s best restaurants. Try the
seafood at Tuscan restaurant Da Giacomo, which is a favourite
of top designers Dolce & Gabbana; their tuna, scampi, crab
and seabass are their pride and joy, all served up alongside an
extensive array of wines. For a real fine dining treat in equally
fashionable surroundings, Nobu Milan located within the
Emporio Armani store on Via Pisoni should be on your list for
trendy Japanese cuisine.
The arrival of sunset is just the signal to start the party in
Milan; some of the most happening nightlife in the city can
be found at Bar Basso, Just Cavalli Hollywood and Alcatraz. If
you stop at Bar Basso, try their signature Negroni Sbagliato – a
blend of spumante, Campari, Italian vermouth and gin – that’s
been famous since the 60s. Just Cavalli Hollywood is great
for both dinner and the post-dinner party, while Alcatraz’s
transformation from a machine shop to a premier dance club
and concert venue is legendary.
“The Via Monte Napoleone is
a haven for tax-free luxury
items and the Galleria
Vittoria Emanuele II is one of
the world’s oldest and most
glamorous malls”
Whether you’re strutting on cobblestone streets in high heels or
watching models work their runway magic in the latest designs,
Milan is sure to keep you on your toes. Come for the clothes
but stay for everything else in Milan – with so much to see and
do in a city that retains the best of the old while embracing the
advancements of the new, it truly is a reflection of how tradition
and modernity can co-exist in successful harmony. Salute!
THE GAME CHANGER
David Bowie
THE PATRIARCH OF GLAM ROCK
WORDS AISHAH AZALI
PHOTOGRAPHS GETTY IMAGES
WHEN YOU THINK OF AN ENTERTAINER THAT STAYED RELEVANT FOR
40 YEARS, ALWAYS BRINGING SOMETHING FRESH AND CRAZY TO THE
STAGE, YOU CANNOT DENY THAT DAVID BOWIE TOPS THE LIST.
The 70s brought out a lot of drama in the music industry. The arena of rock was
graced by now-legends like Styx, Foreigner and Journey, while pop was dominated by
bands like Cheap Trick and The Romantics. In the midst of it all was a UK musician
by the name of David Bowie, who did not specifically fit into one genre but sonically
tried everything from folk rock and American funk to a genre he pinned down called
‘plastic soul’, which was his version of soul music that was influenced by the black
artists of America back then.
Bowie had been around creating poetic songs since the 60s, but it was 1969’s “Space
Oddity” album that catapulted him to stardom. The simple folk acoustic tunes of
‘Space Oddity’, which was a narrative of one Major Tom (an abstract astronaut) was
the beginning of the brilliance that Bowie was about to bestow upon music fans
worldwide - not just through music, but also the visual theatrics that came with it.
Oddball theatrics were not commonly associated with a rockstar, but Bowie was a
different kind of entertainer - an expressive one. He poured his eccentricity into his
music as well as his stage personas because he was unafraid to showcase the different
facets of himself.
In a 1976 interview with Cameron Crowe for Playboy, Bowie said: “When I go out
onto a stage, I try to make the performance as good and as interesting as possible, and
I don’t just mean singing my songs and moving off. I think if you’re really going to
entertain an audience then you have to look the part, too.”
He was known to be gender ambiguous, which was shown throughout his many stage
characters. His iconic incarnations included the famous Ziggy Stardust, who came to
life thanks to Bowie’s fifth album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders
From Mars”. Ziggy’s flaming red mane was a signature look, while the psychedelic
striped space outfits were inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’ - and
his most memorable pieces were made by Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto.
Festival Hall in 2002; Bowie & Iman
together at an AIDS benefit; his
infamous lighting face paint on the
After retiring Ziggy, Bowie reinvented himself into the ‘Thin
White Duke’ which saw all that radical extravagance take a
back seat for a dandy look. This was around the time when
he scored his first US hit in ‘Fame’, a soul-influenced track
co-written by John Lennon. The Thin White Duke was an
elegant persona in tailored baggy pants and crisp oversized
shirts that complemented the new slicked-back hairstyle.
This tailored look would stay trendy till the 80s, but in true
outlandish Bowie style, additions included splashes of pastel
for his Serious Moonlight tour or more casual yet baggy
Though he was the patriarch of glam rock both musically
and visually for four decades, his association to glamour
extended to his marriage to a supermodel. During that time,
unions between stage rockers and runway sirens were not
uncommon: think Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall or Billy Joel
and Christie Brinkley. Though it was love at first sight for
Bowie, it was the opposite for Iman Abdulmajid.
Bowie met 80s supermodel in 1990 at a dinner party. In
an interview with The Guardian, Iman explained that,
“Definitely I didn’t want to get into a relationship with
somebody like him. But as I always said: I fell in love with
David Jones. I did not fall in love with David Bowie. Bowie
is just a persona. He’s a singer, an entertainer. David Jones
is a man I met.”
But with time, the man with the outrageous personas
successfully wooed the queen of the catwalk. They exchanged
vows in Switzerland and later held a private ceremony in
Tuscany, Italy which was attended by close friends like John
Lennon and Yoko Ono. Their union would last until his
death in January 2016.
Even though the father of glam rock has passed away, it does
not mean his legacy dies with him. The influence of David
Bowie can be seen trickling down to the performers of
today. Musicians like Kanye West, Lorde and Alex Turner
of the Arctic Monkeys have expressed their admiration
and appreciation for Bowie due to his role in shaping their
music. Fashion-wise, he paved the way for singers like
Lady Gaga and Madonna whose transformative personas
and extravagant costumes emulate the insanity that Bowie
brought throughout his career.
The world will always remember the man and his evermorphing
stage personalities that sung about angst,
yearning and apocalypse, proving reinvention is the key to
stay relevant in the music industry. He is our starman in the
sky that will always burn bright. Who knows, maybe he’s
hanging out with Major Tom up there.
BMW has grown and evolved a great deal
through the years. For the Bavarian brand,
tradition and heritage are just as important as
developing newer, better technology for their
cars. It is this pursuit of the bleeding edge that
has allowed them to stay relevant in a time
when even mass market manufacturers are
equipping their cars with equipment on par
with luxury cars.
Many companies believe the future lies in
automation. Audi was the first company to
push for autonomous driving, sending selfcontrolled
cars out onto both racetracks and
the open road alike. Mercedes-Benz has applied
semi-autonomy to their S Class, and even
Nissan has begun experimentation on various
Leaf-based development mules.
But this in itself is a limitation. Development of a
self-driving car based on existing roadgoing cars
does not provide full flexibility in design. It doesn’t
allow a company to make full use of that autonomy,
to give drivers an entirely hands-off experience.
Perhaps the answer to this is a complete re-work:
designing an autonomous car from the ground
up. This again poses another problem: can an
autonomous car be fun to drive when the situation
calls for it? Will it be hardly more engaging than a
golf cart with a wraparound body?
When it comes to show cars, BMW has a habit
of going above and beyond in order to truly
show what they are capable of. From their eyecatching
art cars to one-off pieces like the 328
Hommage, you can be sure that whatever they
put on show has gone through some serious
work. The VISION NEXT 100 follows this
trend, and it embodies what BMW sees in the
future of cars.
The exterior of the concept is not merely
elegant, but entirely functional as well. The
wheel arches are entirely sealed off with a
flexible skin that moves and reforms, similar
to the GINA concept that BMW produced
a number of years ago. BMW has labelled it
as ‘4D printing’, where the fourth dimension
refers to how the material adjusts itself in real
time. In doing so, this has provided the car with
an extremely low drag coefficient – ideal for a
fuel-saving future. This dynamic design lends
the VISION NEXT 100 a truly futuristic look,
unique and unbound from the constraints of
current-generation technology.
Variability continues to the interior as well.
On the surface, occupants are presented with
traditional materials and tones associated
with a luxury car; but underneath it all lies
a complex system of adjustable elements.
THE DRIVE
A Vision of
THE FUTURE
AFTER A CENTURY IN OPERATION, BMW HAS A LOT TO BE PROUD
OF. BUT WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS?
WORDS ASWAN YAP PHOTOGRAPHS BMW
MAY/JUNE 2016 | TM 89

The windows automatically adjust to changing light
conditions, both for comfort and to reduce strain on
the climate control system. The seats firm up and soften
depending on the driving conditions, conforming to the
driver. This flexibility allows for changes between driver
and self-driven modes, or Boost and Ease modes as BMW
prefers to call them.
Perhaps the largest difference between the two modes is
the positioning of the steering wheel. It is this element that
makes the VISION NEXT 100 a properly autonomous car,
as it increases cabin space by tucking away unnecessary
elements during autonomous driving. The steering wheel
folds into the dashboard and various elements in the car
adjust to the more laidback atmosphere.
While the self-driving Ease mode is what the majority of
drivers would prefer, it is the Boost mode that will remind
occupants that BMW’s mantra is still ‘Sheer Driving
Pleasure’. Autonomy is the future, but the joy of driving
is equally important. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t
improvements that can be made to the driving experience
– we have always viewed driving pleasure as being a more
visceral, physical action – but augmented reality can be a big
aid to even the most seasoned drivers.
Anybody who uses a GPS application will know the value of
crowd-sourcing information. Google already executes this to
a certain extent by displaying traffic conditions based on the
speed and position of users’ phones. However, BMW predicts
that in the future there will be even more information available
to drivers – information that it plans to display in real time
across a heads up display. Traffic conditions, obstacles, land
marks, routes – these are all things that can be shown to the
driver to give them a better read of the road ahead.
As a concept, many of the technical specifics are not known.
Arguably these are not necessary either, as there is no exact
prediction as to what kind of powertrains we will be using in the
future. It could be anything from hydrogen power to emulated
fossil fuel or even purely electric – all equally possible, but both
market demands and available supply will shape the engines to
come. But even without these elements defined, the VISION
NEXT 100 is a captivating view of the future of automobiles.
If BMW could bring the i8 from concept to reality, it’s highly
likely that the VISION NEXT 100 will see the light of day in
some form or another. Even if its only purpose is to shape
the cars to come, it will have succeeded – a proof of concept
that a car can be designed as a perfectly autonomous machine
without sacrificing the joy of driving.
CITROËN SPECIAL
Advance In Style With
THE DS 5
Elegance and dynamic performance are hallmarks of the DS 5
After the DS label became a standalone luxury arm under the
Citroën name, the DS 5 assumed the status of flagship car
– and if there is one thing that the first model has to achieve,
that is to stand out and be memorable. With an all-new
aerodynamic aesthetic, advanced technological improvements
and a significant performance upgrade, the DS 5 is well on its
way to living up to expectations.
A member of the compact executive segment, the 4.53m long
DS 5 is refined yet space-saving in appearance, allowing for
more responsive handling and decreased fuel consumption.
However, it possesses a spacious capacity, comfortably seating
five with a generous boot storage of 468 litres – and the central
console features a double 13-litre compartment cunningly
concealed under the armrest.
Upon entering the vehicle, the LED-based interior lighting
creates a sense of drama by gradually lighting up the cabin,
especially when the driver starts the car and the transparent
head-up display with the three digital pads burst into life. Adding
to the futuristic atmosphere is the original aircraft-inspired cabin
design, which has a ‘cockpit roof’ with three panoramic glass roof
panels and light wells that can be individually controlled.
With its 1.6 THP engine, the DS 5 is a pleasure to drive
with built-in intelligent traction control helping you navigate
treacherous roads and smart headlights flaring on or off
according to ambient lighting and traffic conditions for a safer
drive. Driving information is also easily visible on a panel in
your direct line of vision courtesy of a head-up display, and the
eMyWay built-in navigation system can store map data, provide
speed limit sign reminders and project rearview images in
colour.
This intelligent vehicle also has a cruise control and speed limiter
with up to five memory settings, meaning that it will remember
your preferred speeds. Improvements in springing and damping
technology help to exert better control over the road, while an
electric hydraulic pump delivers a smooth response without
overcompensating, particularly on straight stretches.
Of course, comfort is key and the DS 5 does not compensate
on that aspect either, cushioning driver and passengers alike in
eight-way electric-powered leather seats covered in a dynamic
range of Nappa leathers. The driver’s seat, in particular, features
a lumbar massage function perfect for easing the stiffness
from long drives. Meanwhile, the car also has factory-fitted
USB sockets with connectivity for Apple gadgets and Bluetooth
connectivity for you to stream all your favourite songs for any trip.
The product of a harmonious blend of breakthrough technology
and luxury refinement, the DS 5 is poised to be a strong
competitor in its section and promises to provide the answer to
the age old dilemma of comfort versus performance. Now, says
the DS 5, you can have both.

TAKE THE CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME
BY TRYING TO LAND YOUR BALL ON A MOVING GREEN.
MAY/JUNE 2016 | TM 93

“Miller’s vision was to create a golf
course that immersed players in a
pristine park-like environment’’
Just because a premise fancies itself as a resort, that does not
necessarily mean it will live up to that title; but at the Coeur
d’Alene, you may just find it to be the absolute truth. The
British have a word for the daunting decadence that can be
found at this particular establishment: posh.
Get ready to learn what being pampered and spoilt is
all about when you finally drop your bags at the resort’s
reception. Plus, what could be more perfect than discovering
that this escape of a lifetime also includes a round of golf
at a course that features the world’s only floating, movable
island green?
Just Floating The Idea
Coeur d’Alene was the brainchild of American industrialist
Duane Hagadone, the CEO of Hagadone Corporation,
which has holdings in hotel, resort and casino development.
The idea of having a floating golf green came to him when
he was gazing out at a floating timber raft on Lake Coeur
d’Alene one day, and it was a dream that became reality in
1991 when the first ball landed onto the floating green on
the 14th, paving the way for Coeur to become one of the
most recognised golf icons in the world.
Once described as “America’s Most Beautiful Resort Golf
Course” by Golf Magazine, the awe-inspiring Coeur
d’Alene Resort golf course spares no expense to deliver the
ultimate golfing experience. The course is renowned for
meticulously manicured bent grass greens and lush carpetlike
fairways, inviting golfers of all ability levels to take part
in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Even the beginning of the journey is conducted in dramatic
style with guests taken to the course in a sleek, handmade
mahogany water craft from the resort. Not only
can golfers experience the majestic views of Lake Coeur
d’Alene from nearly every hole, they are also spoilt with
grandiose details such as personal forecaddies and custom
carts with touchscreen GPS, beverage cart cooler and a ball
and club washer among other amenities. How’s that for a
VVIP experience?
A Dramatic Display
The course is a Par 71 18-hole layout with 6,803 yards in
length encompassing 200 acres. It was designed by golf
architect Scott Miller, who is an alumnus of the Jack Nicklaus
94 TM | MAY/JUNE 2016

design firm. It is a contoured course where you won’t be
able to see other flights and includes a 7km concrete cart/
buggy path.
Some 1,500 wild flowers, 4,000 petunias, 25,000 junipers
and 30,000 geraniums are listed on the course while bent
grass graces all tees, greens and fairways. Miller’s vision was
to create a golf course that offered a stimulating round of
golf, immersing players in a pristine park-like environment.
Even the practice range exudes such drama that golfers get
a chance to use floating golf balls when they attempt to
make their shot over the water. Talk about practicing for
water hazards!
But the piece de resistance is, of course, its world-famous
Floating Green on the 14th. Pride yourself on having played
one of the finest and most famous challenges in the world
of golf when you aim your ball towards this man-made,
HEALTH
Nutrition
AND LONGEVITY
WORDS SHEREEN KHOO PHOTOGRAPHS ISTOCKPHOTO
WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE VARIOUS NUTRIENTS
PRESENT IN YOUR DAILY DIET.
According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, a
newborn Malaysian female in 2015 is expected to live to
77.4 years and a newborn Malaysian male to 72.5 years.
Undeniably, nutrition offers the means to improve health
and appears to be one of the major determinants of
successful healthy ageing. Taking a look at the eating habits
of population groups who have a longer lifespan and live a
life relatively free of chronic diseases may offer an insight
into what constitutes a good ‘anti-ageing’ diet.
THE GREEK VERSION OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the top
killer in Malaysia in the year 2010 was coronary heart disease.
Worldwide, cardiovascular diseases are also the number 1
cause of death, killing an estimated 17.5 million people in
2012. What this data tells us is that people are more likely to
succumb to heart disease than they are to any other diseases,
including cancer. Therefore, it is imperative that we look into
a diet that protects against cardiovascular diseases.
The Mediterranean Diet has been touted as a heart-healthy
eating plan for good reasons. Although the consumption
of added fats in Greece is higher than the total fat intake
in the United States, incidences of heart disease as well as
colorectal, breast and prostate cancer is higher in the United
States, suggesting that these differences are not so much
affected by the amount of fat consumed than they are by
the type of fat and other components in the diet. So, what is
the determining factor that makes the Mediterranean Diet
(the traditional Greek version) a heart-healthy one? Key
components of the Mediterranean Diet include:
• High intake of plant-based foods, such as fruits and
vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. Residents
of Greece average six or more servings a day of
antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables.
• Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil.
More than half the fat calories in a Mediterranean diet
come from olive oil, a source of monounsaturated fats.
Monounsaturated fat is a heart-friendly fat that doesn’t
raise blood cholesterol levels the way saturated fat does.
• Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavour foods.
• Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month.
Substitute fish and poultry for red meat. Stay away from
sausage, bacon and other high-fat, processed meats.
• Drinking red wine in moderation. The Mediterranean
diet typically includes a moderate amount of wine,
usually red wine. This means no more than 5 ounces of
wine daily for women and no more than 10 ounces of
wine daily for younger men.
OKINAWAN DIET
It is generally accepted that the Japanese are the world’s
longest-living people. According to WHO, the life
expectancy of a newborn Japanese male is 80 years and a
newborn Japanese female is 87 years. Within Japan, the
residents of Okinawa have the longest life expectancy.
Indeed, the Okinawans are known for their long average
life expectancy and high numbers of centenarians; people
living up to 100 years of age. Ever wondered how the
diet of the world’s longest-living people would look like?
The traditional Okinawan diet is low in calories and low
in fat, yet nutritionally dense, especially with regard to
phytonutrients in the form of antioxidants and flavonoids.
Unlike the traditional Japanese diet which usually includes
large quantities of rice, the Okinawan diet consists of
smaller quantities of rice but the staple carbohydrate is the
purple-fleshed sweet potato. The traditional dietary pattern
in Okinawa has the following characteristics:
• High consumption of vegetables
• High consumption of legumes (mostly soy in origin)
• Moderate consumption of fish products
• Rich in omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fats are protective
against age-related neurodegenerative disease and
cardiovascular disease.
• Low consumption of meat and meat products, except pork
• Low consumption of dairy products
• Moderate alcohol consumption
• Low caloric intake
Another interesting point to note about an Okinawan’s
diet is that they consume approximately 20% lesser calories
than an average person consumes. It has been hypothesised
that the long-term caloric restriction is linked with the high
prevalence of centenarians in Okinawa. From the 1972
Japan National Nutrition survey, it has been reported that
Okinawan adults consumed only 83% of the Japan average
caloric intake and the researchers suggested that this may
have been, at least in part, responsible for the longer lifespan
of the Okinawan population. On the other hand, Okinawans
98 TM | MAY/JUNE 2016

who move away from the island and presumably adapted to
a new lifestyle pattern have mortality rates higher than those
who remained in Okinawa. Although the evidence that
calorie restriction retards ageing and extends maximal life
span is yet to be clearly elucidated, the practice of consuming
up to 80% of your daily energy requirement remains highly
commendable as this practice will help to ensure weight
maintenance as well as keeping obesity, which is associated
with various chronic diseases, at bay.
EATING LOTS OF VEGETABLES AND FRUITS
Despite the diversity in scientific approaches, the profile of
diets associated with a reduction of risk in cardiovascular
diseases, some cancers, diabetes and several other chronic
diseases shares a similar prominent characteristic of being
high in vegetables and fruits, but reduced in meat and
saturated fat. Such characteristics are noticeable in the
traditional Mediterranean and Okinawan diets.
Though not as prevalent as cardiovascular disease, another
emerging environment-related cause of death is cancer,
accounting for 8.2 million deaths in 2012 as reported by
WHO. Closer to home, The National Cancer Registry
of Malaysia records 21,773 Malaysians being diagnosed
with cancer every year. It is also estimated that one in four
Malaysians will develop cancer by 75 years old.
Top five cancers affecting both male and female (from
highest to lowest prevalence) in Malaysia are:
1. Breast cancer
2. Colorectal cancer
3. Lung cancer
4. Cervical cancer
5. Nasopharyngeal cancer
The risk factors for cancer extend beyond diet and lifestyle
as ageing, family history and inherited genes play a part as
well. However, the protective effects of a diet that is high in
vegetables and fruits must not be underestimated because
they contain a lot of cancer-protective phytochemicals.
According to Cancer Council Australia, the overall
evidence supporting the role of fruit and vegetables
in reducing the risk of some cancers is suggestive of a
protective effect. More than 30% of cancer deaths could
be prevented by avoiding key risk factors, which includes
tobacco use, being overweight or obese, having an
unhealthy diet, leading a sedentary life, overconsumption
of alcohol and the list goes on.
Suffice to say, there is no magic pill to longevity. Eating a
balanced diet with a variety of healthy foods, learning to
practice portion control and including physical activity in
your daily routine can go a long way toward promoting
healthy aging. It’s not too late to start today!
THE Trailblazing CHEF
IT IS NOT EVERY DAY THAT YOU HEAR ABOUT A FORMER BONA FIDE SCIENTIST
REPLACING HER LAB COAT AND TEST TUBES WITH A CHEF’S HAT AND SAUCEPANS,
BUT THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT CHEF ISADORA CHAI DID.
WORDS KARIN CHAN
PHOTOGRAPHS SOO PHYE
“Food can be
glamorous. But it
really depends on
how far you want to
take it and there has
to be a purpose ’’
Just being in the presence of Isadora
Chai is enough to prove that the lady
is a force of nature. Within the chic
walls of her pride and joy, Bistro à
Table, the authoritative confidence in
her tone and manner marks her as the
undisputed queen of the castle; yet it is
tempered by her refreshingly down-toearth
personality.
Her self-assurance has carried
her far from her days working in a
multinational pharmaceutical company.
Despite her honours thesis in stem cell
research, the talented young woman
felt restless and unfulfilled in her job; it
took an European trip and much soulsearching
to make the difficult decision
of leaving her science career behind to
leap into the unforgiving flames of the
culinary world. Cooking had always
been her passion, however, and she felt
it was the right choice.
“My dad showed me how to cook
and I started when I was four years old.
I have been in the F&B industry since I
was 18-19 years old, working part-time
in restaurants. I have been cooking half
my life now!” she said.
Bistro à Table numbers among her
successes; she considers it her ‘second
home’ and intentionally gave it an
approachable feel for guests to “come to
my house to eat”. Here, you can expect
to find an emphasis on her specialty
– refined French cuisine, which is a
throwback to her childhood where
Western food was the norm. Comfort
food for her was lobster thermidor,
beef wellington, shepherd’s pie and filet
mignon.
“The French taste spectrum has
always been a preference. We grew
up with really Western cuisine, not
Chinese, but in terms of subtlety French
122 TM | MAY/JUNE 2016

food is similar to Chinese, which I like.
I also felt that to master the basics of
Western cuisine, it’s easier to start with
a French base and adapt,” she said.
Her considerable kitchen skills
have allowed this vivacious visionary
to indulge her creative exuberance.
Though her menus rotate on a regular
basis, signature staples include ‘cerebral
creations’ like the Maple Syrup Coddled
Egg and the ‘Ode to Newton’ dessert,
which is an ice hemisphere with ice
cream on top and warm ginger beer
that represents an oscillation between
anti-gravity and gravity.
Aside from her individual
innovations, Chef Isadora also loves
the challenge of degustation menus,
whether they are served in her
restaurant as a monthly event or in a
private residence for dinner guests.
They always have a different theme
depending on her whims or by client
request – and she pushes both her
culinary abilities and her creativity to
the limits on these occasions to excite
her diners.
“I once wrote a six-page manga
(Japanese comic) where each page was
represented by one dish. For the scene
where the two leading characters meet
in the cathedral, I thought of Holy
Communion and red wine, so I turned
the [corresponding] dish into a red
wine brioche,” she enthused of a recent
degustation hosted in her restaurant.
Fulfilling the eccentric desires of
clients has yielded equally interesting
results, with one notable example being
a 14-course ‘fancy fast food’ menu with
foie gras sausage hotdogs, truffle mac n’
cheese, Wagyu burgers with truffle oil
fries and champagne ‘soda’.
“Funny thing is, when people get
older and celebrate landmark birthdays,
this is what they ask for!” she laughs.
These unique creations look as good
as they sound, but paradoxically for
someone who has been collecting plates
for food photography since she was
eight, Chef Isadora actually does not
think food presentation is the be-all and
end-all of a dish. Instead – just like the
degustation menus – she simply enjoys
the challenge that it presents.
“Food can be glamorous. But it
really depends on how far you want
to take it and there has to be a purpose
as well. I don’t like over-plating and
building high, false expectations,
because by the time you eat it you are
half-disappointed. Primarily, it has to
taste good – for me it’s taste first, then
texture and presentation,” she says.
Despite already having an extensive
list of accomplishments to boast of, the
tireless dynamo is already seeking out
new adventures on her culinary journey.
Chief among them is the projected May
launch of her new modern Malaysian
restaurant on Lorong Changkat Raja
Chulan, Antara; followed swiftly by
the Big Kitchen Food Festival in July,
for which she is an advisor; and the
December international launch of
her cookbook, Edible Satire, which she
describes as ‘an almanac of degustations’.
“I am living on adrenaline,” she
declares, and with so many exciting
projects on the horizon, it is clear that
there is just no slowing down for this
red-hot trailblazer – and she would
have it no other way.
THE RECIPE
Bounty Of
THE EARTH
ONLY THE RICHEST OF THE RICH HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVOUR THE
DECADENCE OF TRUFFLE, A COVETED FUNGUS FOUND IN EUROPE, AND ONLY A TRUE
CONNOISSEUR KNOWS HOW TO HIGHLIGHT ITS DELICIOUSNESS TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL.
PHOTOGRAPHS ISTOCKPHOTO
Truffle is one of the most expensive ingredients in the world due to its scarcity and the high demand for it. Thus,
when you do manage to get your hands on some premium grade truffle, the pressure is on to cook a suitable dish
that will best complement its distinctive, earthy flavour. It is best just to keep it simple – don’t overcomplicate the
tastes and just let the truffle shine through as the star of the dish.
TAGLIATELLE WITH BLACK TRUFFLE CREAM SAUCE (SERVES 6)
RECIPE
Ingredients
• 1 (1 oz.) black truffle, preferably from Oregon
• 3 cups heavy cream
• 8 tbsp. unsalted butter
• 4 oz. chanterelle mushrooms, halved
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 cup dry white wine
• 1 tsp. minced thyme
• 1 lb. dried tagliatelle
• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• 1⁄3 cup grated parmesan
• 1⁄4 tsp. dried lavender
• 3 oz. watercress, trimmed
• Grated Pecorino Romano, for garnish
Preparation Method
1. Mince one-third of truffle and stir into the cream.
2. Cover and chill 6 hours.
3. Melt butter in a 12” skillet over medium-high heat.
4. Cook mushrooms and garlic until golden for about 6-8 minutes.
5. Add wine and thyme and let it cook for 8 minutes.
6. Add reserved truffle cream and let it simmer until thickened
for 10-12 minutes.
7. Cook tagliatelle in salted boiling water until al dente, about
7 minutes.
8. Drain your pasta and add into a skillet.
9. Add parmesan, lavender, salt, and pepper and toss to coat.
10. Garnish with watercress and Pecorino Romano and finally
shave remaining truffle over the top.
THE DRINK
Fortune
WELL SPENT
WHETHER YOU’RE A WHISKY CONNOISSEUR OR A
COLLECTOR OF SPIRITS, HERE’S SOMETHING TO INVEST IN.
PHOTOGRAPHS ISTOCKPHOTO
There’s a lot that goes into making spirits, and as with
almost every spirit, there are different classes and types
to it. Whisky is no different. Made from fermented grain
mash of corn, rye, oats, wheat or barley, depending on the
type of whisky you want, the make comprises different
percentages of ingredients aged to golden perfection.
All whisky starts off as a liquid simply known as new-make
spirit until it sits in an oak barrel for a couple of years,
sometimes even decades, and then made into a blend. The
number of years it is aged influences not only the quality of
the end product, but also the pricing. The best whiskies are
usually those that have spent the longest in storage.
While the drink seems to be a favourite amongst men,
women tend to enjoy this strong yet relaxing drink too.
In fact, whisky lovers would say that the best way to
end their day is to enjoy a glass or two of good whisky.
Unfortunately, whisky prices tend to soar more so than
other spirits; however, just ask any whisky connoisseur and
they will tell you why investing in a good bottle of whisky
is a fortune well spent.
Created in 2010, the Scottish Isabella’s Islay costs a
whopping RM23.5 million. If you think that’s a crazy
amount to pay for whisky, here’s why it costs so much: the
bottle in which your scotch whisky comes in is covered
with 8,500 diamonds and 300 rubies, plus you can have
your name engraved on the bottle.
In terms of rarity, the Dalmore 64 Trinitas is one to keep
an eye out for for collectors. There are only three bottles in
the whole world, and these masterpieces cost significantly
less than the Islay at about RM380,000. The bottles are
fairly straight cut, with a sterling silver deer said to reflect
the drink’s ‘inner strength and outer sparkle’. The whisky
itself takes the cake as it is a special blend of rare stocks
from 1868, 1878, 1926, and 1939.
Finally, the Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve is
an example of age-old whisky that costs a small fortune.
The bottles were produced in honour of founder William
Grant’s granddaughter, the oldest person in Scotland who
passed away at the ripe old age of 110. The whisky had been
aging in a barrel since New Year’s Eve of 1955, and when
she passed, the company paid tribute to her by auctioning
off 11 bottles to celebrate each decade of her remarkable
life. The money raised was donated to good causes around
the world; however, every now and then, one or two show
up for re-sale if you’re lucky.
THE TREND
A marketplace of service providers at the push of a button
Uber has steamrollered into the transportation
industry, causing global disruption. Airbnb has
revolutionized the way customers find temporary
accommodation. Now, a team of entrepreneurs
is revolutionizing the way local services are hired
with ServisHero, an online marketplace that
connects customers with service providers at the
touch of a button.
Described as the “Uber” for the local
services industry, this location specific app
quickly connects users to verified local service
providers. It offers a tailored marketplace that
instantly pairs customized jobs with the most
relevant service providers. They include home
maintenance workers and a wide range of
occupations from wedding planners to tutors to
fitness instructors.
Customers seeking to hire local services for
their home and offices simply submit a request
via the ServisHero App or webform. They are
then matched with multiple price quotes from
community reviewed service providers (we
call them Heroes) in just a few hours. Each
quote will include the Hero profile, reviews from
previous customers, a personal message and an
estimated price for the job.
The form filling functionality not only guides
customers to provide all the necessary
information needed to get the job done, but
also enables Heroes to understand what needs
to be done, and provide the most accurate
quotes. Customers and service providers can
also contact one another directly via the in-app
chat once the quotes have been submitted.
Additionally, users can also rate the Heroes and
post up their reviews in order to create a safe
and respectable environment for the community.
While ServisHero offers the same convenience
as services like Uber, the startup is on a colossal
mission to become a one-stop-shop for all
services in South East Asia. This not only makes
it easier for users to find the best rates and
compare quotes - it provides independent SMEs
with a whole new demographic of tech-savvy
customers to reach out to, without having to build
their own online platforms, simply by listing their
business on ServisHero.
