Michael Lee’s take on
sustainable living at
Capri by Fraser
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 EDITOR'S NOTE
Editor ' s Note
With the alarming effects of climate change, preserving the
planet is now more crucial than ever. Immediate action is essential
to secure a better, greener future for all.
Our cover personality, Michael Lee, the General Manager of Capri
by Fraser, Bukit Bintang, shares insights into the hotel’s ecofriendly
initiatives.
committed to environmental preservation, adopting unique
approaches and initiatives, contributing to the planet’s well-being.
At Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, we take pride in implementing
numerous initiatives to maintain a harmonious balance between
excellent golfing experiences and a thriving eco-system - truly
swinging for the planet!
6
It starts right from the hotel porch as guests are welcomed by
a display of greenery adorning the wall - a testament to the
hotel’s dedication to environmental preservation. Beyond this,
the hotel’s commitment to sustainability extends to various ecoconscious
initiatives, actively contributing to a greener planet.
In the Tech section, we showcase Acer’s work devices that not
only boast power and performance but also offer sustainable
options for organisations prioritising eco-consciousness.
Turning our attention to fashion, Stella McCartney’s Spring 2024
ready-to-wear combines sustainability with style. The collection
defies traditional fashion norms, rejecting animal leather,
feathers, fur, and skins. It embraces eco-conscious alternatives
like regenerative cotton, recycled cashmere, and traceable wool.
Thai Odyssey is equally dedicated to environmental conservation,
offering a range of sleep-enhancing treatments, including the use
of eco-friendly massage oils that benefit both you and the planet.
If you’re a conscious eater, you’ll be delighted by our curated
list of eateries at Tropicana Gardens Mall. These establishments
embrace sustainability measures, allowing you to enjoy a good
meal while supporting the ecological equilibrium.
In our Lifehacks section, we provide facts, figures, and tips on
how to embrace the principles of reuse, reduce, and recycle.
By doing your part, you can make a big impact in restoring our
ailing Mother Nature. It’s never too late to start, but the time to
act is now!
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 EDUCATION
EMPOWERING
MINDS
In today’s fast-paced world, prioritising students’
mental health is paramount
40
Gary takes a moment to engage with students, offering a listening ear, support, and a safe space to express their thoughts and concerns

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
In the modern educational landscape, students are confronted
with multiple challenges, including coursework, school life
adaptation, and navigating the transformative effects of the
pandemic on lifestyles and study methods. Consequently,
mental health takes centrestage.
At St Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia
(Tropicana PJ Campus) (“SJIIM”), its comprehensive programmes
and initiatives include educational units integrated into the
curriculum and specific interventions by the pastoral team and
school counsellor.
“In terms of the curriculum, in the High School, for example, we have
a lesson each week, taught during tutor time, which covers a wide
range of topics including mental health and well-being. Students
learn about self-care, the importance of sleep and a healthy diet,
coping strategies to help manage stress, building and maintaining
healthy relationships, and many more. As students get older, these
may become more focused on managing stress during examination
periods and how they can revise and study in a way that maintains
their well-being,” explains SJIIM’s Head of School, Gary Cairns.
He adds that parents are also included in these sessions, having
expressed their desire for assistance in supporting their children.
Participating in diverse co-curricular activities is crucial too,
Gary notes. The school encourages students to join at least one
activity weekly, be it sports, arts, or service projects through the
Lasallian Youth Movement. These experiences can significantly
enhance students’ emotional and psychological wellness.
“At school, we have lots of events that help to build community
and promote a positive and inclusive school environment. I
genuinely believe that the more connected a student feels to
their school, the more that it will have a positive impact on their
mental health and well-being,” adds Gary.
Gary asserts that SJIIM will go to
great lengths to ensure students
feel heard and valued
training our staff to identify students who may require support
or intervention. We then have a team of pastoral leaders and a
counsellor who will work with the student and their family. During
training sessions for teachers, we will run sessions on potential
indicators that a student may be in need of well-being support and
we use a system in school whereby if a teacher observes a concern,
they log it and a notification is sent to the relevant pastoral leader.
Even if it is something very small, such as not being their usual
self, teachers are required to record it so that it helps us build up a
picture of how the student is behaving and feeling.”
Annually, SJIIM administers a schoolwide well-being survey to its
students, providing valuable insights into their school connection,
and self-perception as learners and individuals. Using this data, the
school strategises interventions to offer the best possible support.
41
He observes that students engaged in numerous extra-curricular
activities and leadership roles tend to excel academically and
experience improved mental well-being.
Gary notes that the school’s pastoral team, which includes the
student’s Head of Year and the Assistant Principal for Character and
Well-being, remains accessible and visible to students at all times.
How does the school identify and address mental health concerns
among students?
“First and foremost, there should be strong positive relationships
between teachers and students so that students feel comfortable
to tell their teacher if they need support. We spend a lot of time
He adds that supporting students’ well-being is a collective
effort - it works best when the school, student and parents are all
invested and working together.
“As a school, we are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure
that our students feel listened to and valued,” says Gary.

Feeding your pet sustainable and chemical-free food has
CLOSING THE
LOOP ON WASTE
We need to break the waste cycle by reducing,
reusing, and recycling right now
The amount of waste we throw away grows by the day. It’s not only
unsightly, but it’s also harmful to the environment. If we don’t do
something to reduce, reuse, and recycle our waste, it will only get worse.
We can do better
The World Bank’s “What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot
of Solid Waste Management to 2050” report states that
global waste generation is expected to increase by
approximately 3.4 billion tonnes per year by 2050.
68
MSW poses significant
environmental issues, polluting
air, water, and soil while releasing
greenhouse gases that worsen
climate change.
Malaysia produces over
30,000 tonnes of
Municipal Solid Waste
(“MSW”), commonly
known as trash or
garbage, every day,
which amounts to about
1.17kg of waste per
capita.
Food waste is the most
significant component of MSW,
followed by plastic, paper, mixed
organic, wood, and others.

TROPICANA MAGAZINE
Malaysia’s recycling rate for MSW is
approximately 31%, while Singapore,
Taiwan, and Korea have higher rates.
The government aims to increase
the recycling rate to 40% by 2025.
What can
we do?
Despite efforts to discourage the use of
single-use plastic, the consumption of plastic
packaging for food in Malaysia increased to
148,000 tonnes in 2020, indicating a
concerning upward trend in plastic usage.
Buy fewer items, opt for repairs instead of disposal,
compost food scraps, avoid food waste, and excess
VISIONARY
Michael Lee, the General Manager of Capri by Fraser, Bukit
Bintang, talks about the hotel’s eco-friendly initiatives
66
Guests are welcomed to the porch of Capri by
Fraser, Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur with a
display of vibrant greenery gracing the wall. This
initial sight speaks volumes about the hotel’s
dedication to environmental preservation. Beyond
this feature, the hotel has undertaken multiple
sustainability initiatives that further demonstrate
its commitment to a greener planet.
“We are actively implementing various ecofriendly
practices. For instance, we have
replaced traditional amenities in the rooms
with biodegradable and refillable containers for
shampoo and soap. And, the toiletries are from
a brand called 1969, known for using natural
ingredients,” explains Michael.
In food and beverage operations, priority is given
to using biodegradable takeaway meal boxes
made from sugar cane fibre. “Although the cost is
higher, we believe it is a worthwhile investment in
protecting the environment.”
To reduce plastic waste, there are no plastic
laundry bags in the rooms. Instead, guests can
place their laundry in a designated container, and
the housekeeping team will collect it.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce plastic
waste, we plan to install water filters in every
room, eliminating the need for bottled water.
Similarly, for meetings, we use eco-friendly mugs
and provide filtered water, reducing our reliance
on plastic bottles,” says Michael.
He adds that Capri by Fraser, Bukit Bintang
has also established a recycling programme
and subscribes to green energy from Tenaga
Nasional Berhad.
“As part of the Frasers Property Group, we
have a collective commitment to achieve
net zero carbon emissions by 2050. At the
hotel level, we have implemented various
programmes and established a sustainability
committee to oversee our efforts. We have
developed a comprehensive one-year plan
outlining our sustainability strategies. To
ensure transparency and accountability, we
submit monthly reports detailing the amount
of waste disposed of, as well as the specific
sustainable practices we have implemented.
Our dedication to sustainability is deeply
ingrained in our operations, and we take these
initiatives seriously,” Michael elaborates.

housekeeping.
With dedication and perseverance, he eventually
transitioned into the role of a concierge, which marked
a significant milestone in his professional growth. “This
experience provided me with valuable insights into guest
services and personalised assistance,” he remembers.
Throughout his career journey of nearly 30 years, he has
consistently remained dedicated to delivering exceptional
service and ensuring memorable experiences for guests.
“The hotel industry holds a special place in my heart, and
I am grateful for the diverse opportunities and enriching
experiences it has provided me thus far.”
What he truly enjoys is the opportunity to meet and
connect with people. “Being in the hospitality line feels
like a natural fit for me. I take pleasure in extending a
warm and sincere welcome to guests, making them feel
at home. There’s a sense of fulfilment that comes when,
at the end of their stay, guests express their gratitude
and praise the hotel and team. Their satisfaction and
appreciation mean everything. It’s the ultimate reward
and reinforces the purpose of our work.”
To stay connected and informed, Michael immerses
himself in daily operations. He personally checks-in
guests at the reception and engages in various tasks on
the floor. “This hands-on approach ensures that I remain
in touch with both the staff and guests, and have a deep
understanding of what is happening at all levels of the
workplace.”
70
Michael’s strategy for motivating and inspiring his team
revolves around working and playing together. “Everyone,
regardless of their position, holds value and contributes
to our success,” he stresses. When engaging with lowerranking
employees, he recalls his own time as an entrylevel
staff member, fostering empathy and understanding.
When interacting with mid-level managers, he speaks
their language, understanding their challenges and
objectives. Similarly, when meeting with the executive
team, Michael communicates in a way that aligns with
their vision and goals.
