PEGASUS POST
News
Davids heads national body
advocating for community boards
Ken Couling responds to
the letters in last week’s
Southern View about the
recent articles on the 360
Trail group’s proposal to
build a pathway beside the
Bromley oxidation ponds
and the effect this may have
on birds.
Some recent correspondents to
Southern View have completely
the wrong idea about the proposed
pathway along the east of
the oxidation ponds.
The path would meander
through the existing bush
between the oxidation ponds
bund and the estuary. It would be
invisible from the estuary, hence,
cause little or no disturbance to
birds on the estuary.
Further south between Sandy
Point and the windsurfing car
park is an existing exposed public
pathway.
The construction of a shade
cloth fence, until overgrown by
newly-planted native shrubs, will
reduce the existing disturbance
of the birds using this part of the
estuary.
LINWOOD-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member
Alexandra Davids has become
the youngest person to head the
national body advocating for
community boards.
At 34, Ms Davids plans to
“take advantage of my relative
youth and energy to help advocate
and drive new ideas and
change” as community board
executive committee chairwoman
for Local Government
New Zealand.
“I was surprised to be chosen,
to an extent.
“It has taken many years for
younger people to be taken seriously,
so it has felt special to be
elected with support from more
mature people,” she said.
First elected to a community
board at age 28, Ms Davids continues
to build on her very early
commitment to helping young
people and families.
“Instead of going to holiday
programmes, my mum would
send me to the Methodist Mission
Food Bank to volunteer
putting together food parcels for
families.
“I got to meet some of the
families and it gave me an
insight at a very young age as to
how people were struggling in
our city,” said Ms Davids.
Ms Davids also works with
the Battered Women’s Trust, answers
calls for Crisisline, is the
chairwoman for Keep New Zealand
Beautiful, a school board,
and is a Graeme Dingle Foundation
trustee and Resource Management
Act commissioner.
She also stars in Murder Mystery
shows.
the community board in 2013.
She said her new role offers a
good opportunity to “keep local
issues on the table.”
“Anybody can offer a service but not everyone can
render a service. You accomplished the latter and we
appreciate your considerable efforts in achieving a
very successful outcome for us and our family today.
You and your team are terrific.”
