That passion has landed her
the opportunity of her dreams.
Julia is one of 25 young

country to participate in
the GirlBoss Advantage

Rates
decision
to come
from Govt
• By Devon Bolger
ANY DECISION on helping people
who may struggle to pay their rates
will come from the Government,
the district council says.
Said district
council chief
executive David
Ward: “(We) will
be guided by
government
policy and
guidelines in
David Ward
relation to fifnancial
assistance
for ratepayers.
It is likely to be a national
decision.”
Mr Ward said it is still too early
to tell exactly what assistance the
community will need.
“It’s very early days and I
think that we are just looking
at how we respond to the virus.
For us, it’s about responsiveness
to the central government
guidelines, the safety of staff
and the safety of our communities.”
It follows calls from
Christchurch city councillors to
stop rates increases in response
to the Covid-19 crisis.

Hororata resident helpless
to stop property flooding
• By Devon Bolger
A HORORATA resident says he
is getting no help in preventing
severe flooding on his property.
Robby Wilson has lived on
Downs Rd for 38 years and said
he has repeatedly tried to engage
with the district council on finding
a solution.
“They won’t talk to me. I’ve
talked to the mayor and staff and
they’re going to do nothing for me.
I’ve left messages but I’m never
informed of anything,” he said.
He says over half of his property
will be flooded if there is
more than 60mm of rain.
“That is up to the floor of the
house and about 250-300mm of
water will get around and under
my house. It has stripped the
soil from the gardens, put water
through my sheds and vehicles. I
have had enough.”
He said the district council has
dug a ditch about 1km from his
property but that has not helped.
“They’re very nervous about
doing things. They are just talking
it’s all they’re doing. It’s a
major inconvenience for us.
“It’s the cost of it and the damage
that gets done. We had a whole
lot of old books and they are all
ruined from the flooding during
Christmas in 2018 and nobody
seems to give a stuff. Nobody takes
it seriously I don’t think.”
DISAPPOINTED:
Robby Wilson’s
Hororata property
suffers from
severe flooding,
like this incident in
December 2018, and
he says nothing is
being done to help.
A work plan for
flood protection in
the township includes
a number of projects
aimed at reducing
flooding.
Happy Jacks Creek
is to be cleared and
floodgates installed, a
diversion drain will be
installed on Hawkins
Rd, the smaller culverts
along the existing
drain on the road
will be upgraded and
old water race culverts
will be opened.
A water level monitor will also
be installed at the roundabout on
Bealey Rd and extensive willow
clearing is planned for Cordy’s
Stream and the Hororata River
as well as gravel removal to improve
flood flows.
Mr Wilson said this work
could possibly help the township
but it would not stop the severe
flooding and his property.
A district council spokesman
confirmed that Mr Wilson had
contacted them and said they
will discuss his concerns directly
with him.
Mr Wilson doubts this will
happen as he has tried several
times to get answers from the
district council before.
It has only been in the last few
years or so that the flooding has
got this bad, he said
“The council is putting an
ambulance at the bottom of
a cliff with what they have
planned for flood protection.
You have to stop the water getting
into the township rather
than dealing with it when it
gets here,” he said.
“The report that was presented
to the Malvern Community
Board is flawed and most of
it will do nothing to stop the
flooding.”

Councillors James Gough, Sam
MacDonald, Catherine Chu, Phil
Mauger, Aaron Keown and James
Daniels sent a letter to Mayor
Lianne Dalziel asking her to lead
a conversation as to how a zero
per cent rates increase could be
achieved this year.
Mayor Sam Broughton said
the situation is continuing to
develop and he wants to ensure
the district is responsible with the
assets it has.
“There needs to be the investment
that is required to ensure
that our water and wastewater
systems are up to scratch and we
can provide good services to our
community,” he said,
On Monday, all of the community
facilities in the district closed
their doors.
The closure includes all libraries
and service centres, the Selwyn
Aquatic Centre, Lincoln Event
Centre, Rolleston Community
Centre, West Melton, Tai Tapu,
and Dunsdandel community centres,
and all other council-owned
community centres.

Lincoln’s population is growing fast – more than
10% last year alone. It’s not hard to see why, with its
close proximity to Christchurch, established schools,
and businesses sitting alongside some of the world’s
leading agricultural research and learning facilities.
A new supermarket is proposed for Flemington.
It’s needed now and will be needed even more as
Lincoln continues to grow in popularity as a great
place to live and play.
The Selwyn District Council has publicly notified
the supermarket’s resource consent application,
allowing the public to have their say on the proposal
before the Council decides whether it can proceed.

Julia’s big plans
• From page 1
“At first it was really
shocking, and then it
really settled in that this
is actually happening and
it’s amazing to have this
opportunity,” she said.
The programme helps
young females gain important
skills and exposure
in a series of masterclasses
and rapid-fire internships.
While gaining experience
and connecting with industry
leaders to fulfil their
dreams, it simultaneously
addresses the skills and
gender diversity gap in
workplaces today.
Said Julia: “The programme
will be beneficial
for young women because
it will encourage them to
believe they’re more than
capable of working in those
industries.”
Julia moved to New Zealand
from Essex, United
Kingdom, in 2011 with her
parents and twin sisters for
better schooling opportunities.
She was diagnosed
with attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder as
a child, which she and her
family began to understand
once they moved to New
Julia Holmes
Zealand.
“I have ADHD, so at the
time Selwyn House School
helped my parents understand
what that was, and get
me on the proper medication
so I could focus,” she said.
The 15-year-old dreams
of becoming a geneticist
one day, using genetic
modifications to improve
the lives of the less fortunate.
Her love of biology
stemmed from a family
member who had a rare,
chromosomal disorder
which sparked an interest
in learning more.
“I want to help in some
sort of way using genetics,
like genetically modifying
plants to help with world
hunger,” she said.
“I’ve also been working
on a project called Project
X in school, where I’m
researching how I would be
able to genetically modify
mosquitos to carry a vaccine
which could prevent
disease in third-world
countries.”
The five-day GirlBoss
Advantage programme is
set to go ahead in Christchurch
next month, where
the students will have the
opportunity to intern with
Orion Group and is hosted
by power company Connetics.
Julia hopes to gain a
number of key skills and
experience to aid her on
the road to becoming a
geneticist.
“This programme might
be able to help me get some
feedback from experts and
mentors on the project I’m
working on, and that I’ll be
able to use later in life.”
It is often a man’s world
in her chosen industry, but
she believes now is the time
for girls to lead the world.
“Don’t listen to the
people who tell you that
you can’t do it.”

How to

if you’re 70+
If you’re over 70 years of age, you should stay at

Continue enjoying physical exercise – like gardening
– and ensure you have a good supply of food and

How to
support
anyone 70+
It’s really important that we all support people aged 70+ in our
communities during this challenging time. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Stay at least 1 metre away.
2. Wave or nod instead of shaking hands.
3. Keep visits short (under 15 minutes).
4. Talk to neighbours over the fence.
5. Offer to pick up supplies and medicine.
6. Offer to help them connect in ways other
than in person, like video chat.
7. Send videos or pictures of children
rather than taking them to visit in person.

Residents set up
trust to manage fundraising effort
• By Devon Bolger
A TRUST has been set up to
manage donations to a group
of Prebbleton residents fighting
against a proposed waste plant
expansion nearby.
Resident and businessman
Hamish Prebble said the
Prebbleton Clean Air Trust was
set up to manage fundraised
money.
There are five
trustees, three of
which are within
the 500m limited
notification zone
and two from the
community.
It comes as
Angela
Jones
a community
march through
Prebbleton
planned for
Saturday has been postponed
due to Covid-19.
Said resident Angela
Jones: “There has been an
overwhelming response to
this event from the local
communities and other
surrounding areas. With
numbers attending predicted
to reach well over 1000 the
decision to postpone was made
for community well being and in
line with government direction.
“It is a difficult decision for us
to make but it is important that
we do this in the interests of the
health of all our communities.”
The group has also decided to
start a givealittle page for people
to donate to the cause.
Mr Prebble said they wanted

to create an official trust to

around fundraising.
“The money will be spent on
opposing the applications for
air discharge consents that have
been made to Environment
Canterbury, and for public
awareness and education
campaigns.”
A website has also been created
for further information on the
proposal.
Waste Management Ltd has
applied to expand its current
site and operate the toxic waste
treatment plant at 305 Marshs
Rd in South Hornby.
In its resource consent
application, it said the plant will
treat and manage items, such as
pesticides, acid, used tyres and
other types of rubbish.
Resource consent was granted
for the proposed plant by the city
council in December 2018.
Environment Canterbury
also granted three consents for
its construction and discharge of
stormwater in March 2019.
The consent application currently
with ECan is only for activities
resulting in discharge to air.
It ran a limited notified
consent process, which meant
only people within 500m of the
proposed facility had a chance to
have their say.

Dog poo
problem
in Lincoln
• By Devon Bolger
PEOPLE ARE being urged to
clean up after their dogs while in
the Lincoln Domain.
Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall
said the issue was discussed at a
Lincoln Event Centre management
committee meeting recently.
“I am really disappointed that
people aren’t picking up their
dog droppings as it is a matter of
respect.
“We just want to spread some
awareness about the problem and
ask people to clean up after their
dogs so everyone can enjoy the
domain,” he said.
Cr Lyall said it is a timely
reminder that dog owners must
have bags to collect droppings on
them at all times when out with
their pets.
District council senior animal
control officer Steve Clarke said:
“This domain has always been a
dog friendly, off-leash, exercise
area, which is regularly patrolled
by our staff.”

Endemic hoverfly
saves cabbage trees
A DELICATE little hoverfly that
can sometimes get trapped inside
the house is the cabbage tree
hoverfly, Allograpta ventralis.
This species is a New Zealand
endemic and is often found
where there are cabbage trees.
Adults are skinny little flies
between 6 and 10mm long.
They have white faces with
large eyes, a dark, shiny thorax
and yellow and black abdomen.
Males are slightly smaller and
their eyes are holoptic (which
means they meet along the
median dorsal line of the head)
compared to females.
Adults eat pollen from a
variety of native and exotic
plants.
The females can contain
more than 60 eggs. The larvae
are flattened in shape and feed
on the cabbage tree mealybug
(Balanococcus cordylinidis)
which are found at the base of
the leaves, particularly where
leaf debris gets lodged among
leaf base, creating a moist
environment.
These mealybugs in large
numbers can cause the cabbage
trees to droop, look sick and
sometimes die.
Fortunately the hoverfly larvae
can usually keep these native
mealybugs in check and stop the
trees succumbing to them.
DELICATE: The cabbage tree hoverfly helps save cabbage
trees from mealybug infestations.
Coes Ford part of
nationwide study
COES FORD will
play a major part of a
nationwide study into
the relationship between
E.coli and harmful
waterborne pathogens.
Environment Canterbury
surface water
scientists Jarred Arthur
and Emily Gray are carrying
out sampling and
testing of water at the
ford as part of the pilot
study for the Institute of
Environmental Science
and Research and the
Ministry for the Environment.
The site was chosen as
it is a good representation
of some of the issues
facing swimming water
quality in both the urban
and rural sectors.
Mr Arthur said the
hope is for the study to enable
scientists to predict where and
when harmful pathogens will
appear in water.
“There are a lot of land-use
pressures including agriculture,
urban pressures and waterfowl or
other nesting birds.
“All those pressures add up on
the water, and so we’re helping
measure how those pressures are
different in waterways around
the country,” he said.
This is important as it is all
about protecting public health,
Mr Arthur said.
INVESTIGATE: Environment Canterbury surface water scientists Emily
Gray (left) and Jarred Arthur taking samples at Coes Ford as part of a
nationwide study.
“Our waterways are important
ecologically, culturally and aesthetically,
but also for swimming
water health and that’s what this
project is directly related to.”
Ms Gray said while microbes
are what the pilot test is focused
on, there are some potentially
hidden dangers at sites such as
Coes Ford.
“Coes Ford is a contact
recreation site, so we monitor a
few things that could be a human
health risk. E. coli is often
focused on, but another large
part of the health risk is toxic
cyanobacteria.
“At Coes Ford, this forms as
a thick black mat that can be
found on the bottom of the river.
The mat produces a cyanotoxin
which is potentially deadly. It can
be really harmful to humans and
to dogs, it only takes a teaspoon of
the toxin to kill a dog,” she said.
It is hoped that the results of
the study will be used to inform
a larger more intensive investigation
to review New Zealand’s
swimming water quality monitoring
and reporting guidelines.
The Heathcote River in
Christchurch is also being
sampled as part of the study.

In Brief
BDI out of Div 1 rugby
Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell
are one of two teams to have
pulled out of the division one
rugby competition due to a lack
of playing numbers, along with
newcomers Woodend.
The competition was to start this
weekend before Covid-19 caused
the suspension all rugby in New
Zealand.
The pools and draw for the combined
competition was redone
but will need to be re-jigged
again when club rugby begins.
Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell
intend to have a team play in
division two instead.
Rolleston Raptors take
basketball title
The Rolleston Raptors basketball
team has won the men’s grade
of their Hornby Action Indoor
Sports league.
The team beat Gordon’s Ballers
in the final, last week.
The team, which is made up of
Rolleston High School students,
uses the competition to prepare
for the secondary school basketball
season which is currently
suspended due to Covid-19.
Last year the team finished
second and then represented
their school and finish second at
their South Island under-17
tournament last September.
Chamberlain chipper after
stellar Hawke Cup season
• By Jacob Page
CANTERBURY Country and
victorious Hawke Cup cricket
captain Harry Chamberlain
thought something special
was brewing at the start of the
season.
The Leeston-Southbridge
player said he felt the 16-strong
squad picked in October had
depth even with a number of
them well entrenched in the
Canterbury set-up.
“One of the big things we did
was pick that squad early so that
we were all training together on
a regular basis each week right
from the start,” he said.
“A number of our quick bowlers
were needed for Canterbury
throughout but we always felt
we had the depth to cover that
challenge.”
Chamberlain had plenty of
good sounding boards within
the team for advice.
“Guys like Shanan (Stewart)
and Tim (Gruijters) are both
senior guys and international
cricketers.”
He said Stewart’s century in
the Hawke Cup win over Hamilton
a month ago was a pivotal
point in the campaign.
LEADER: Harry Chamberlain says the Canterbury Country cricket team always had the potential
to achieve what it did this past season. (Right) the team pictured after winning the Hawke Cup.
“I know (Henry Shipley) got
six wickets for us after we won
the toss but Shan’s century in
those conditions, with a slow
outfield and that pitch, it was
like 200.
“Not all of the guys had played
three-day cricket so it was a case
of batting session by session and
breaking it down that way.
“We have guys in the squad
who know their roles really well.
“Guys like Jed Roberts and
Rupert Young always find a way
to contribute to the team and our
overall success,” he said.
“You need guys like that to
have the season we have had.
“Winning the Hawke Cup is
no small achievement and knowing
that we have it for the summer
allows us to prepare well to
try to defend it next season.”
Chamberlain and his Leeston-
Southbridge teammates have
been denied the opportunity to
defend their Canterbury Country
45-over competition title
due to the current Covid-19
outbreak.
Their final against Cheviot
was to be played last Saturday
but was cancelled along with
all other cricket around New
Zealand.
Cheviot were declared the
winners after they finished topof-the-table
during the roundrobin
phase of the competition.

COVID-19
Council information
The Council is actively monitoring and responding to the developing COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve
set up a webpage for the latest up-to-date Council information at selwyn.govt.nz/covid19. Please
keep an eye on this link or our Facebook page.
All Council community facilities have been closed until further notice.
The closure includes all libraries and service centres, Selwyn Aquatic Centre, Lincoln Event
Centre, Rolleston, West Melton, Tai Tapu, and Dunsandel community centres, and all other
council-owned community centres and halls.
The Council’s Rolleston headquarters will remain open for now, but some services may be
restricted or unavailable. We encourage people to minimise non-essential calls and visits. You can
reach us on 0800 SELWYN (735 996) or by email. You can also find information, contact us, and
make payments for many services on our website.
If you are sick, have been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case or have returned from
overseas in the past 14 days, do not visit the Rolleston headquarters.
We have activated our business continuity and pandemic plans to make sure that essential
services (such as roading, water, sewerage and stormwater, refuse collection etc) will continue.
We are also prepared to support New Zealand health agencies with sharing of information and by
making Civil Defence staff available.
Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says the decision to close facilities is based on meeting public health
requirements for minimising social contact, and is consistent with most other councils in the region.
“We understand this is a significant disruption for our communities, but it is important that we take
all possible steps to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
“While there’s no indication of community transmission emerging at this stage, closing these
facilities will help reduce any risk of the virus spreading through our community, and gives us the
best chance of keeping our communities safe.”
The Council is continuing to liaise with public health agencies and other neighbouring councils.
The closures will be reviewed on a regular basis, but they are likely to be in place for some time.
Libraries and recreation centres will be looking at alternative ways of delivering programmes and
classes using digital channels.
Campgrounds, parks and playgrounds will remain open at this stage.
Information as at Monday 23 March. Check selwyn.govt.nz/covid19 for latest updates.
Demolition of Lincoln building begins
Work will begin this week on the demolition of the Lincoln Chinese Takeaway building on Gerald Street.
The building at 5 Gerald Street is being removed as the first step in opening up the retail area and transforming
the street appeal for the Lincoln Town Centre upgrade. Work to prepare the building for demolition is due
to begin on Tuesday 24 March and the demolition is expected to be completed by Friday 8 May.
The demolition will also allow further developments in this area
to occur more easily during the Lincoln Town Centre upgrade,
which is scheduled to start in 2023, and allow any developments
to remain in keeping with the rest of the town centre design.
A traffic management plan will be in place for the duration of the
demolition works. The seven car parks directly in front of the
building will also be closed for the duration of the work for safety
reasons and for use by the contractors. Pedestrian access to
the adjacent businesses will be maintained.
A specialist team will safely remove asbestos from the building
during April before the demolition starts on 20 April. New Zealand
has strict laws for safe removal and this team will be working to
the Worksafe New Zealand Code of Practice for the management
and removal of asbestos and a site specific safety plan.
Community funds help
basketball make a slam dunk
The Selwyn Hawks Basketball club has taken flight thanks to the
Selwyn Community Fund.
The fund supports local community groups and organisations
holding events and activities that contribute to community wellbeing
– including those that promote participation in physical activity
across all ages and connecting members of the community.
Applications for round two of funding from the Community Fund
this year close on Thursday 30 April. Apply now at selwyn.govt.nz/
selwyncommunityfund.
The Selwyn Hawks launched in 2018, in response to rising
basketball participation in the district. In their first year, four Selwyn
teams played in the Canterbury Basketball Association winter
competition, and the Under 15 A team took home a winning title.
The club grew rapidly entering nine teams in the 2019 CBA
winter competition.
The fund has allowed the Selwyn Hawks to continue their passion
for basketball offering basketball skill development programmes
and tournaments for Selwyn youth with over 630 children taking
part in 2019.
"This funding has enabled us to secure the services of a very
experienced programmes co-ordinator, Aled Jones,” Selwyn Hawks
Programmes Manager Shanon Cummings said.
Mr Jones has been involved with playing and coaching basketball to
a national level and is running several programmes and tournaments
for the Selwyn Hawks.
“The community has benefitted by the Selwyn Hawks being able
to find and retain a highly skilled, knowledgeable and passionate
basketballer,” Mrs Cummings said.
The club has also run an after-school skills development programme
for beginners called, ‘Hoops’ during the school term at three Selwyn
venues: Rolleston Community Centre, Lincoln Event Centre and
West Melton Community and Recreation Centre.
Last year it also organised an inter-school tournament supported by
the Community Fund, for 48 teams of children in years three to eight.
Major drinking water projects
take next step
The multi-million dollar upgrade to the district’s drinking water
system has taken a big step forward with its largest project
completed.
The Council is part way through a $23 million series of 59 capital
works projects to build and upgrade pump stations, increase
capacity and improve water quality.
The new $1.4 million Helpet reservoir and pump station is now
online significantly increasing the water available to Rolleston. The
new station connects a 1200 cubic metre reservoir to the Rolleston
water supply and a pump station that when fully operational will be
able to pump up to 300 litres a second.
Works has also been completed at Sheffield, Hororata, West Melton
and Moore Street Rolleston and is underway at Tai Tapu, Rakaia
Huts, Claremont, Arthur’s Pass, Castle Hill, Springston, Leeston.
Council Infrastructure Group Manager Murray Washington says
the upgrades are part of a long-term plan to keep improving this
essential service.
“With the growth we’ve had in the past few years it’s important
to make sure that we’re constantly upgrading our drinking water
supply to make sure that people have access to a safe
and sufficient supply.”

Malvern water race disruptions
Council contractors will be doing repairs to the Waimakariri water race intake tunnel from Wednesday 1
April. This work will require shutting flows from this intake for a period of up to 20 days.
While the other scheme intakes will still be operational, it is expected that there will be widespread
disruptions to the Malvern water race scheme throughout April.
This work is necessary to ensure the intake is safe and to keep the water race scheme operating.
Please be prepared that there may be no supply of stock water via the water race to your property for
this works period. For a map of likely disruptions visit selwyn.govt.nz/wrdisruptions.

SELWYN TIMES
Emergencies (as the name suggests) can
happen at any time, it is prudent to be
prepared in case something happens to
you and your pets.
Recent viral pandemic and other
natural disasters affecting Canterbury
such as earthquakes, floods and fires have
hopefully brought everyone’s attention to
the issue. If you haven’t already prepared
yourselves then I hope you will soon. It is
vital to include your pets in the disaster

plan as they are reliant on you for help.
Always practice good hygiene. Wash
your hands with soap and water and dry
them thoroughly especially after touching
your pets. If you allow pets to lick you,
please wash your face or hands or other in
contact body parts afterwards.
There are lots of survival kits/packs
available for people but have you thought
about what you may need in case your pets
are involved in an emergency?
In the first instance, have your vet’s
afterhours emergency phone number on
hand.
Pet first aid kit
Have a first aid kit ready, it should
include:
1. Bandages – crepe bandages, cohesive
bandages
2. Tape – micropore or similar
3. Scissors
4. Antibacterial wound cleaner
There are all different kinds of
emergencies, most of them involve taking
your pet to the vet as soon as possible. In a
case where there is a bleeding wound, use
bandages and tape and apply pressure to
stem the worst of the bleeding. The vet will
assess the wound when you arrive.
Bear in mind that if your pet has a
penetrating wound with an object in the
wound, such as a branch, knife etc, leave it
as is and let the vet remove it safely.
Any breathing difficulty including
breathing too fast or laboured heavy
breathing, especially whilst the animal is
resting require urgent veterinary attention.
Ingestion to known poisons such as rat/
mouse/rabbit bait, chocolate, antifreeze etc
requires urgent veterinary attention also.
Create a pet survival kit
For natural disaster emergencies, it is
prudent to have a survival kit ready at
hand for your pet. For a pet survival kit, I
suggest:
1. Enough food for at least a week
2. Bottles of water
3. Warm blankets
4. Bowls x 2
5. Spare medication – if your pet is on
on-going treatment it is always wise to
obtain your next script in good time
and not run too low
6. Collar, harness and lead (this includes
cat harnesses) to secure your pet
7. Keep this in a box or bag that can be a
pet carrier too.
Have a plan ready; discuss it with the
whole family. Be prepared!
Cats often run away or hide during
natural disasters, you may not be able to
catch them at the time of evacuation. So
ensure that they are microchipped and the
details are up to date. The Christchurch
earthquakes saw too many
cats lost or displaced,
microchipping maximises
your chance of being
reunited with them.
If you also have livestock, have an
evacuation plan for them too.

MY PRIDE AND JOY
SELWYN TIMES
A & P show cancelled
Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and restrictions
on mass gatherings, one of the Malvern district’s
most iconic events will not go ahead this year.
‘This is the first time the show has been cancelled
since the war,’ says Malvern A&P Show president
Richard Hill. The show was founded in 1899.
The Malvern A & P Show is an annual favourite
in the area and involves the tireless energy of a
committee and an army of volunteers, who put in
hours of work leading up to the event.
“It’s a real shame,’ he says. ‘We had a lot of
response from competitors asking not to cancel and
we didn’t realise just how much the show meant to
people – it was heart-warming to hear.’
However, two competitions will still go ahead
– the gift fleece and the gift lamb – both these
competitions provide the organisation with much
needed revenue to help it remain viable. Mr Hill
says the competitions don’t involve a lot of people
and he is grateful for the support of farmers and the
sponsorship for these two events.
With 120 years behind the Malvern A & P Show,
Mr Hill says it’s times like these that make people
really appreciate what they did have and he expects
next year will be even better supported for that very
reason.
“We can expect a bigger and better show next year.’
NOTE: The Oxford A & P Show is also
cancelled for 2020
Wheels & Wings fundraiser postponed
The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade’s
Wheels & Wings planned for Sunday
19th April, has been postponed due to
concerns over the spread of Covid 19
Coronavirus. It is hoped this event may
run later this year.
The first Wheels & Wings held in
2008, was so popular it became a biannual
event. The idea had grown out of
a suggestion by Nev Croy for an ‘All A
Day’ for Australian and American cars.
As with any good brainstorming, Charlie
Draper proposed including aeroplanes
and the district’s very own Wheels &
Wings became a reality.
Over the years, Wheels & Wings has
been a great family day out, featuring
a diverse line-up of vintage to modern
aircraft and motor
vehicles. On display
have also been
motorcycles, tractors,
light trucks, model
aeroplanes, microlights
and more, from the
unique to the unusual,
along with exhibits and
stalls.
This year would have
been the seventh time in
fourteen years, Wheels
& Wings has been run by the Sheffield
Volunteer Fire Brigade; a fundraiser
which allows the purchase of additional
equipment like their smoke chaser.
After each event, the Sheffield
Volunteer Fire Brigade has also
made generous donations to St John
Ambulance Malvern, while other local
organisations like schools, sports clubs
and the Malvern Lions have benefitted
from donations or the opportunity to
raise money.
The officers and members of the
Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade are
disappointed to have had to postpone
this year’s Wheels & Wings. They wish
to thank everyone who has provided
support in 2020 or in previous years they
have run this event.

MOTORCARE PROFESSIONALS
Returning the sheen to metal
If restoring a car or motorcycle,
renovating your home or you just like
your vehicle to look its best, there may
be a need for some metal polishing or
sandblasting. Dull or scratched stainless
steel, corroded chrome, or tarnished brass
can all be brought back to life again.
With over 45 years in the industry,
Eric and Fred Williams have masses
of knowledge, skill and experience in
this specialised work. It is therefore not
surprising, their business Escort Metal
Polishers, is known for its high quality
metal finishing and sandblasting.
Almost any metal part on a car
or motorcycle can be polished or
sandblasted. Mag wheels are their
specialty, along with manifolds, covers,
pipes, alloy trims and stainless steel
around a vehicle. All can be given a
smoother, brighter finish. If your vehicle
has had a scrape they can sort any
damaged metal.
Escort Metal Polishers also take care of
re-chroming such as on bumpers or grills.
Eric, Fred and the team at Escort Metal
Polishers have worked on an extensive
range of projects from automotive and
marine to household items and large
commercial projects. They truly are a
one-stop shop, and not afraid to tackle
any job from the one-off to large on-going
projects.
Along with customers who call by, their
clientele includes engineers, building
companies, automotive specialists, panel
beaters, auto restorers and
other businesses.
“People come to us because
we can easily and quickly
take care of the whole job,”
says Fred.
Over the years they have
abrasive blasted and polished
countless mag wheels, vehicle
parts and motorcycle frames;
stripped down, polished and
lacquered house lots of light
and window fittings, as well
as door handles; and worked
on marine restoration
projects.
The team at Escort
Metal Polishers worked on
the canoe-like sculptures outside the
Christchurch Art Gallery, many of the
fittings in the new Christchurch Hospital
and Christchurch Justice Precinct, and
polished the brass kick plates, stair
banisters, hand rails and other fixtures
as part of the Christchurch Town Hall
restoration.
With a limited number of skilled
polishers now operating, Escort Metal
Polishers provides a valued service. The
combined experience, knowledge and
expertise of the team puts them ahead,
assuring quality workmanship in metal
polishing, abrasive-blasting and all facets
of the job.
They work hard to meet each and every
customer’s requirements and timeframe,
promising to turn your job around as
quickly as they can.
Sandblasting work is
usually completed within
two working days, metal
polishing completed
in about a week, and
chrome plating sorted
in approximately three
weeks.
If needing the services
of Escort Metal Polishers,

THE BEGINNING of the ‘changeover’
from summer to winter gardening has
arrived.
Autumn brings regular rainfall and
a welcome reprieve from hot, dry
temperatures for many areas around the
country.
Vegetable gardens
Harvest your remaining summer crops
and remove any plants that have finished
cropping and pop them in the compost
bin. Towards the end of the month,
winter vegetables can be planted as either
seedlings or seeds and include; beetroot,
broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage,
cauliflower, carrots, lettuce, onions,
radish, silverbeet, spinach, swedes and
turnips.
Replenish the soil with much needed
nutrients by adding compost. Mix well
with existing soil to a spade and a half
depth.
Remember to rotate where you will
plant different vegetables compared to
last year, and stagger plantings to provide
continuous harvesting throughout the
season. Protect your seedlings from snails
and slugs and keep watering if there is a
lack of rainfall.

gives plants a reprieve
Flower gardens
Sadly, most summer flowering annuals
that thrive in the hot months are nearing
the end of their lives. As temperatures
cool towards the end of the month, begin
planting out winter annuals like calendulas,
nemesia, pansies, snapdragons and
wallflowers. As with your vegetable garden,
prepare the soil well and make sure there
is enough drainage for the coming wet,
winter conditions.
Cut back any flowering perennials and
plant any new seedlings where desired.
March/April are the final months for
planting out bulbs. Good preparation of
soil is critical as many bulbs will not be

disturbed for a number of years so it’s
worth giving them the best start.
In general, bulbs thrive in an open,
sunny position where the soil is well
drained. Bulbs to plant include anemones,
crocus, daffodils, freesias, hyacinth, iris,
lachenalias, nerines, ranunculus, tulips and
watsonias. Remember to mark where you
plant them.
Fruit trees and berries
A number of pear and apple varieties
are ready for harvesting this month, while
the classic golden queen peach ripens
in early march. Passionfruit are turning
purple now, indicating they are ready for
harvesting.
Pull them directly off the vine or collect
as they fall to the ground when ripe.
Mandarins, lemons and oranges are now
forming on citrus trees so keep watering
consistently, mulch well and continue
feeding with citrus fertiliser. Berry plants
such as raspberries, can be safely pruned
this month.
Herb gardens
Herbs can start looking a little tired this
time of the year and many begin flowering
and eventually ‘go to seed’. Cut back plants
regularly or plant new specimens. Another
option is to harvest, dry and then store
herbs for use over the winter months. It’s a
simple process and is very rewarding.

rewarded with displays of blooms in March
and April, and varieties such as iceberg will
flower right into winter. Begin applications
of rose fertilisers to rose bushes and dead
head flowers regularly. Mulch with fresh
compost.
Lawns
Even though we have had just a small
amount of rain, work can now begin on
renovating existing lawns or sowing a new
one. Lawn fertiliser can be safely applied
this week – make sure it is watered in
well. Regular mowing can begin again to
encourage strong, healthy grass growth.
Shrubs and ornamentals
Add compost around all existing
shrubs and ornamentals. Hold off
purchasing new plants until around May
when new season specimens start arriving
at garden centres.

Pt Lot 3 DP 6591 (CB24B/403, CB7D/1140) and portions of the following: Legal Road

With a modern 252sqm four bedroom home combined
with a modern fully self- contained two bedroom
(67sqm) cottage, this is a mouth-watering prospect.

Completing the setup is an extra-large six bay shed
(two lockup bays with concrete floor). Everything on
this property is immaculately presented including the
paddocks, fencing and access lanes.
Our owners have enjoyed their time here and they have
loved establishing this remarkable lifestyle however they
have made the difficult decision to leave. Having made
that decision to sell their instructions are loud and clear.
Don’t miss this opportunity to view one of the

Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Selwyn real estate teams up
Well known real estate firm Property
Brokers recently joined forces with the
Farmlands’ real estate arm. The aim is to
complement the residential and lifestyle
sales, offering a more specialised Real
Estate service to the farming community
and people living in the towns throughout
Selwyn.
The long-term partnership arrangement
has enabled Farmlands to tap into the
expertise and systems of an established
and recognised real estate identity. For
Property Brokers, this strategic alliance
has increased their reach and resources,
ensuring even greater efficiency in serving
their clientele.
The merger of real estate services
allows Property Brokers greater access to
the rural market and offers the ability to promote
through Farmlands’ regular marketing and
networking programme. This reaches around 75,000
shareholders, many of whom are local farmers.
Farmlands will still offer a real estate service to
the local farming community without the need to
manage this aspect on a day to day basis.
All Farmlands’ real estate staff have transferred
to Property Brokers, ensuring client continuity
while increasing the pool of knowledge, skill and
resources; totalling twenty salespeople and nine
support staff.
“With greater resources and expertise, Property
Brokers is an even more credible alternative for
the Selwyn market. We have a team of committed
and genuine people along with a more extensive
nationwide network reaching more buyers. The
potential is for even better results,” suggests Tony
Quayle, Property Brokers’ Branch Manager Selwyn.
Property Brokers’ Lincoln office
The firm’s salespeople and support staff are based
in four offices: Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and
Rolleston allowing Property Brokers to be well
placed to serve the people of Selwyn. The Darfield
and Leeston offices are also supported by Farmlands
stores in those towns.
Tony says the changes are hugely exciting and
along with a planned move for both their Darfield
and Rolleston offices they have been quite busy.
Property Brokers specialises in residential,
lifestyle, rural and commercial property sales as
well as property management. This translates to a
wide network of services and market opportunity.
They are a local business (not a franchise) with an
emphasis on working as a team, where their people
work where they live and support their community.
“Everyone at Property Brokers is working towards
the same goal and aiming to provide a 10 out of 10
service. One of our core values is: if we shake your
hand we mean it,” explains Tony.
