Omihi Collie Club to mark 100 years<br />

Taleswill be unleashedand<br />
dog skills shown off at the<br />
home of the Omihi CollieClub<br />
laterthis month.<br />
The club is celebrating its<br />
100thbirthday at Eastlyn,<br />
Omihi, on <strong>March</strong> 29 and 30.<br />
Laterinthe year it will hold<br />
acentennial dinner, where a<br />
booklet on the history of the<br />
club will be launched.<br />
The club was formedin<strong>19</strong><strong>19</strong><br />
at ameeting of the Omihi<br />
branch of the Farmers’ Union<br />
at Omihi School.<br />
It was namedthe Waipara<br />
and OmihiCollie Dog Trial<br />
Club,with Waipara being<br />
dropped from the namein<br />
<strong>19</strong>35.<br />
Mr G.B.Starky was elected<br />
patron, Mr AngusCameron<br />
presidentand Mr W. Baxter<br />
vicepresident.<br />
Mr Starkyofferedapaddock<br />
and his sheep for the firsttrial<br />
at Spye, wheretwo open<br />
classes and amaiden class for<br />
farmers wererun. The maiden<br />
classcovered the Waipara,<br />
Omihi, Scargilland Motunau<br />
school districts.<br />
The Spye railway station was<br />
nearby, which competitors<br />
used to gettothe venue.<br />
As trialsare today,itwas a<br />
community event, with many in<br />
the district helping the event to<br />
run smoothly, with womenin<br />
the kitchentoensure there was<br />
plenty to eat.<br />
Spye remained host to the<br />
trials until <strong>19</strong>69, when it was<br />
movedtoWash Creek,at<br />
Waipara. In <strong>19</strong>86, anew home<br />
was found at Eastlyn,atOmihi,<br />
where the clubremains today.<br />
The move meant acouple of<br />
buildings had to be movedto<br />
the new grounds.<br />
As theywere getting close to<br />
thedestination, one of the<br />
buildings started slipping off<br />
thetruck,but theycarried on,<br />
making it to the farmwiththe<br />
building still on board and in<br />
onepiece.<br />
On one occasion, Tom<br />
Barwell ranafield day at<br />
Netherwood,before rugby.<br />
Snow coveredthe ground, but<br />
thefieldday carried on<br />
regardless.<br />
Mr Barwell becameatop<br />
triallistand laterturnedto<br />
breeding dogs.Hehad kennels<br />
at the back of Amberley.<br />
Some othertop triallists<br />
have beenmembers,including<br />
Leo Croft,Dick Carmichael,<br />
Ron Symmonds, Ray Maskew,<br />
John Kollowski, Lex Couper,<br />
Neil Evans and Ted Lewis.<br />
Notablewomen in its ranks<br />
have includedBarbara<br />
Carmichael, Jean Forrester,<br />
Margaret Evans and Annette<br />
Miller.<br />
The centennial trials will be<br />
signpostedtoEastlyn,off Sloss<br />
Road, which is off Jury’s Road,<br />
Omihi.<br />
Top judges willdecide the<br />
winners, who willreceive<br />
specialprizes in eachclassto<br />
mark the occasion.<br />
Past membersare invited to<br />
attend and watch, along with<br />
any members of the public.<br />
The trials are backed by Tux,<br />
Notable names ... Neil Evans is among along list of top triallists<br />
linked to the Omihi Collie Club.<br />
